Mule Fuel Strain: Gas, Garlic and a Heavy Kick
The Mule Fuel strain is a modern gas heavyweight: GMO crossed with a ThugPug Genetics male called Lurch, bred in Michigan and named for the way it hits. SeedFinder's breeder listing sums it up — "strong stone and extremely funky terpenes" that land "like a mule kick." It smells like diesel, chemicals and skunky garlic funk, tests in the upper 20s for THC on most menus, and pulls you toward the couch fast. In our THCA flower collection it sits in the loud, nighttime corner, next to strains like Garlic Breath and Donny Burger.
It's also a strain where the databases don't agree. Most sources say GMO × Lurch from ThugPug, one well-known grower sells a GMO × Mendo Montage version under the same name, and one retailer credits a different breeder entirely. Below: what's actually documented, how the high unfolds, what the potency numbers mean, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Mule Fuel's frosty, purple-shaded, orange-haired buds.
Quick Facts
In short: A Michigan-bred GMO × Lurch from ThugPug Genetics — diesel, chemical and skunky funk on the nose, a quick head rush that drops into heavy, sleepy body calm, and THC regularly reported in the upper 20s.
- Type: Indica-dominant hybrid — AllBud and SeedFinder say about 90% indica; Leafly lists it simply as a hybrid. See indica vs sativa
- Lineage: GMO × Lurch (most sources); Belushi's Farm sells a GMO × Mendo Montage version
- Breeder: ThugPug Genetics (Michigan) per Leafly and SeedFinder; SPARC credits Skunk House Genetics
- THC: Leafly lists 29%; AllBud 24–31%; SPARC 25–30%
- Dominant terpene: Myrcene per Leafly lab data, with terpinolene and caryophyllene

- Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. AllBud lists it 90% indica / 10% sativa, and SeedFinder's breeder entry says "90% indica dominant." Leafly calls it a hybrid with mostly calming effects.
- Ancestry: GMO (Chem D × Forum-cut GSC, which is why GMO is also called Garlic Cookies) × Lurch, a ThugPug male whose own background is barely documented.
- Breeder: ThugPug Genetics, the Michigan outfit run by the breeder known as Gromer — credited on Leafly and SeedFinder. ThugPug is the same house behind Peanut Butter Breath and Meat Breath.
- THC: Leafly lists 29%; AllBud 24–31%; SPARC 25–30%; SeedFinder "up to 30%."
- CBD / minor cannabinoids: CBD is negligible. Leafly and SPARC both list about 1% CBG.
- Seeds: SeedFinder says Mule Fuel was released as regular seeds and was "never available as feminized seeds" — most of what's on shelves comes from clone cuts.
Where the sources disagree
The second parent. Leafly, AllBud, SeedFinder and SPARC all list GMO × Lurch (Leafly writes it as "Lurch × GMO Cookies" — same plant, GMO's other name). Belushi's Farm, which sells a Mule Fuel in several legal states, lists its version as GMO × Mendo Montage. That's a different cross under the same name, so a Belushi's jar and a ThugPug-line jar aren't guaranteed to be the same genetics.
The breeder. Leafly and SeedFinder credit ThugPug Genetics. Dispensary chain SPARC credits Skunk House Genetics. We found no breeder statement that settles it, so we go with the two strain databases.
The name. No breeder origin story is on record. SeedFinder's description ties it to the "mule kick" of the high and the fuel of the nose, which is as much as anyone can honestly say.
Not to be confused with: Mule Breath, Modified Mule and Pack Mule (GenefinderOG) or Mule Piss (Equilibrium Genetics) — different strains. Bodhi Seeds has also used Mule Fuel as a parent, crossing it to their 88G13HP.
Mule Fuel Terpene Profile
Leafly's lab data puts myrcene first, followed by terpinolene and caryophyllene; SPARC names the same three and calls terpinolene the standout. Belushi's Farm's version lists myrcene, alpha and beta pinene, limonene, humulene, fenchol, nerolidol and caryophyllene. One Leafly reviewer posted a batch at 24% THC with 3.15% total terpenes led by myrcene, limonene and alpha-pinene — a genuinely loud jar. The skunk isn't a terpene at all: a 2021 ACS Omega study traced cannabis's skunky smell to volatile sulfur compounds, chiefly one called 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol — which is why two jars with similar terpene lists can smell very different.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy, musky, the sedating body
Terpinolene — woody, herbal, an odd fresh edge
Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, the GMO bite
Limonene — a faint citrus lift
Typical relative profile for Mule Fuel based on Leafly's lab data. Cuts vary — some read more caryophyllene-forward and garlicky.
- Myrcene: The earthy, musky base and the terpene most often associated with heavy, sedating strains — consistent with Mule Fuel's sleepy reputation.
- Terpinolene: Unusual in a heavy indica — it's more often found in bright sativas. Here it adds a woody, herbal, slightly fresh note under the gas.
- Caryophyllene: Peppery and spicy, inherited from the GMO side, and the only common terpene known to bind CB2 receptors.
- Limonene: A light citrus edge that keeps the profile from being pure fuel.
The "fuel" comes from the GMO line's Chem D ancestry — the same Chemdawg family behind many of the gassiest strains on the market.
Appearance
AllBud describes "long spade-shaped olive green nugs with dark purple undertones, lots of thin orange hairs and a coating of tiny purple-tinted white crystal trichomes." In practice, Mule Fuel buds are dense and resin-heavy, which is part of why hash makers like it. Some cuts show more purple than others, but the frost is consistent — a good jar looks sugared.
Aroma and Flavor
Mule Fuel is a love-it-or-hate-it nose. Open the jar and you get straight diesel and chemical gas first, then skunk and the savory, garlicky funk that GMO is known for. Leafly's top-reported flavors are tobacco, chemical and ammonia, with diesel all over the reviews; AllBud lists diesel, earthy, herbal, skunky and spicy, with a little sweetness on the exhale. Belushi's Farm describes a "fuel-like tangy flavor that lasts upon exhale." Grinding it makes the whole room smell — store it airtight.
Recreational Effects
Mule Fuel hits quickly. One Leafly reviewer described a "quick strong onset" — felt in the head and face after two hits, then "right behind my eyes." On Leafly, with 120 reviews and a 4.6-star average, the most-reported effects are:
- Sleepy: the headline effect. This is a bedtime strain for most people.
- Relaxed: heavy, full-body calm that loosens tension.
- Euphoric: a mood lift in the first stretch, before the body takes over.
- Body high and couchlock: AllBud describes a "heavy indica high" that ends in couchlock and sleep.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First few minutes: pressure in the head and behind the eyes, with an early euphoric lift.
- 15–60 minutes: the body takes over — heavy limbs, deep relaxation, little interest in getting up.
- 1–3 hours: a slow slide toward sleep. Smoked, most of the effect fades within a few hours; edibles last much longer.
Some reviewers report feeling dizzy or uncoordinated at first before it settles — another reason to sit down and pace yourself.

Mule Fuel's dense, resinous buds break apart sticky — a grinder keeps the burn even.

How Strong Is Mule Fuel?
Strong. Every source we checked puts it in the high-potency bracket:
- Leafly: 29% THC, about 1% CBG — "higher THC than average."
- AllBud: 24–31% THC.
- SPARC: typically 25–30%.
- SeedFinder (breeder listing): "up to 30% THC."
The number only tells part of the story. Mule Fuel feels heavier than its percentage because of how sedating its terpene mix is — myrcene-led, gassy and body-first. Reviewers on AllBud repeatedly say it's not for beginners. Treat it as an experienced-consumer strain and start with less than you think you need.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Mule Fuel batch against the 24–31% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Mule Fuel vs Similar Strains
- vs GMO: the parent. GMO brings the garlic, the Chem D gas and the long, heavy high; Mule Fuel adds more skunk and pushes even further toward sleep.
- vs Donny Burger: another GMO-family heavyweight. Donny Burger is more savory and "cheeseburger" funky; Mule Fuel is more diesel and chemical.
- vs Motorbreath: Chem D × SFV OG — pure gas and a heavy body, a little more OG-forward and less garlicky.
- vs Garlic Breath and Mendo Breath: Garlic Breath (GMO × Mendo Breath) is the closest flavor cousin; Mendo Breath is sweeter, vanilla-caramel and still very sleepy.
- vs Permanent Marker: different family, similar job. Permanent Marker has the sharp chemical, marker-cap nose and an indica-leaning body — less garlic, a little more candy. It's the closest match on our shelf.
Who Mule Fuel Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced smokers who like loud gas strains; evening and end-of-week sessions; anyone chasing a heavy body high before bed.
Poor fit: beginners, daytime use, anyone who needs to get things done, and anyone who dislikes skunky or garlicky smoke. If you want something sweeter for the evening, Lemon Cherry Gelato is the dessert-side option on our shelf.
How to Use Mule Fuel THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: a good way to taste the diesel without the harsh, heavy smoke. Around 360–380°F keeps the terpenes bright; 390–410°F brings out the full body weight.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait a full 15–30 minutes — Mule Fuel is potent and creeps into the body. Regular users usually find two or three hits is plenty for the evening. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 39% of reviewers).
- Stress: about 26% of Leafly reviewers.
- Pain and tension: about 18% mention pain; the heavy body effect is the draw.
- Sleep: AllBud lists insomnia, and "sleepy" is Leafly's top effect.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most-reported negatives on Leafly.
- Dizziness — Leafly's other top negative; some reviewers felt uncoordinated early on. Stand up slowly.
- Heavy sedation — plan nothing after it. Don't drive.
- Harsh smoke — AllBud reviewers note heavy smoke; a vaporizer or a clean glass piece helps.
Talk to your doctor before using it if you take prescription medication, especially sedatives, or are pregnant or nursing.
Is Mule Fuel Good? How to Judge a Good Bag
It has a 4.6-star average across 120 Leafly reviews, and gas fans rate it highly. Whether a specific bag is good comes down to these checks:
- Ask whose cut it is. A ThugPug-line GMO × Lurch and a GMO × Mendo Montage version can differ. A good seller knows.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC — and terpenes, if you can get them. Ours are on the lab results page.
- The nose should be loud. Real Mule Fuel smells of diesel and funk through the bag. Weak smell means old or badly cured flower.
- Frost and density: sticky buds, trichomes all the way through, purple shading on some cuts.
- A proper cure: grassy or hay smells mean it was rushed.
Growing Mule Fuel
Mule Fuel is a resin-heavy, moderately challenging plant. Most seed stock was regular, so finding a keeper often means popping a pack and selecting females — or starting from a known clone.
- Flowering: about 8–10 weeks indoors (SeedFinder lists around 60 days; SPARC says 8–9 weeks).
- Training: top early and use low-stress training to open the canopy and build several colas, per SPARC's grow notes.
- Climate: likes full sun and warm, dry conditions; keep humidity down late in flower — dense buds are mold-prone.
- Yield: no breeder figure is published; growers report solid returns with good canopy management.
- Smell control: essential. This is one of the loudest plants you can grow — run carbon filtration.
