Is $100-a-Pound THCA Flower Real?
You will see "$100/lb THCA flower" on Reddit, in Telegram groups and on wholesale marketplaces. It exists. It is almost never smokable flower, and here is the math on why.
A pound is 454 grams. At $100 a pound the grower is getting 22 cents a gram. Hand-trimming alone costs a farm $75–$150 per pound. A compliant third-party cannabinoid panel runs $75–$150 per batch. Proper curing takes 2–4 weeks of climate-controlled space. None of that fits inside 22 cents a gram. So a $100 pound is one of the following:
- Machine-trimmed or untrimmed outdoor with sugar leaf still on, usually from a large sungrown harvest sold off at the end of the season
- Shake and trim labeled as "smalls" or "popcorn"
- Last year's crop — oxidized, dry, terpenes mostly gone, THCA partially converted to CBN
- Untested or hot — no COA, or a COA from a different lot, or delta 9 over 0.3% which makes it illegal to ship
- Treated flower — low-grade hemp sprayed or dusted with THCA isolate to hit a number

- A named grower with an address. A farm that grows its own flower can tell you the harvest date. A reseller cannot.
- Current harvest — ask when it was cut. Anything over a year old is a discount for a reason.

What Reddit Gets Right (and Wrong) About THCA Smalls
Most of the search traffic for "thca small buds" and "cheap thca flower ounces" ends up on r/hempflowers and r/thca threads, so here is the consensus there, checked against what we see on the farm.
- Right: smalls are the same flower. The most-repeated piece of advice on the forums is "buy smalls, it is the same plant." Correct, with one caveat — only if the seller is honest about what smalls means. See the shake and trim table.
- Right: price per gram is all over the place. Forum users regularly compare $35 outdoor ounces against $120 indoor ounces and argue about which is the deal. Both can be fair. The $35 ounce is sungrown, machine-trimmed and probably 18–22%; the $120 ounce is indoor, hand-trimmed and 26–30%. Per milligram of THCA they are closer than they look.
- Wrong: "smalls are less potent because they get less light." Lower buds do get less light and can test a point or two lower than the top cola on the same plant — but the COA for a batch is run on the blended lot, and the difference is within the lab's margin of error. It is not the 5–10% gap people claim.
- Wrong: "$100/lb is normal for THCA." It is normal for biomass and trim. It is not normal for smokable, tested flower. See above.
- Half right: "smalls are drier." Smaller buds have more surface area and lose moisture faster in a bad cure or a bad bag. From a grower who cures properly and ships with a humidity pack, they are not. From a reseller who bought a pound of someone else's leftovers, they usually are.

- No COA: No third-party lab report means no verified THCA % and no Delta-9 compliance. Non-negotiable — always confirm it exists before buying.
