Purple Sunset Strain: Grape Candy Meets Mandarin Orange
The Purple Sunset strain is an indica-leaning hybrid from Ethos Genetics — a backcrossed blend of Purple Punch and Mandarin Sunset, with a little Mandarin Cookies folded in. Think grape candy and ripe berries on the nose, mandarin orange and a clove-like spice behind it, and buds that go deep purple late in flower. The high is the calm, hungry, end-of-the-day kind: relaxed body, softened mood, and for a lot of people, an easy slide toward sleep. For mellow evening flower, start with our THCA flower collection.
It's also a name that means two different things depending on where you read about it. Most databases tie Purple Sunset to Ethos, but Weedmaps and one dispensary describe a Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet cross instead — and the potency numbers swing from 18% to "25–30% total cannabinoids." Below: what the breeder-linked sources actually say, how the high unfolds, why it turns purple, how strong it really is, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Purple Sunset's frosty buds.

- Type: Indica-leaning hybrid. Leafly lists it as an indica with "mostly calming" effects; AllBud and the Ethos seed listing at Seeds Here Now both call it 60/40 indica-dominant; SeedFinder marks it "mostly indica."
- Breeder: Ethos Genetics, credited by Leafly, SeedFinder and seed retailers. One Leafly reviewer credits a New York grower, Bone Creek, for the cut they bought — that's the grower, not the breeder.
- Ancestry: SeedFinder gives the breeder's pedigree as (Purple Punch × Mandarin Sunset) × (Purple Punch × Mandarin Cookies) × Mandarin Sunset. AllBud shortens it to Purple Punch × Mandarin Sunset; Leafly calls it a "complex cross" of all three.
- THC: 18% on Leafly, 22% on AllBud, 18–25% on Weedmaps, 20–25% on the Ethos seed listing.
- CBD: Leafly lists 0%. The breeder info on SeedFinder claims 1–2% CBD and 1% CBG — unusual for a modern dessert line, and not something we could confirm on a published lab test.
- Seeds: feminized only, sold as "Purple Sunset R2BX" or "RBX2."
Where the grandparents come from
SeedFinder fills in the family tree one level up:
- Purple Punch — Larry OG × Granddaddy Purple. This is where the grape candy, the purple color and the heavy body come from. GDP itself goes back to Purple Urkle × Big Bud.
- Mandarin Sunset — listed by SeedFinder as Orange Velvet × Herijuana (marked "probable"). It's the source of the mandarin-orange note and, through Herijuana, a lot of the sedative weight. JointCommerce instead calls it Herojuana × Orange Skunk, without a source.
- Mandarin Cookies — Ethos' own Forum Cookies × Mandarin Sunset. It adds a Girl Scout Cookies backbone: denser buds, a bit of doughy sweetness and more resin.
What "R2BX" and "RBX2" mean
Breeders use "BX" for a backcross — crossing a hybrid back to one of its parents to lock in that parent's traits. Purple Sunset goes back to Mandarin Sunset a second time, which is why the orange note survives next to all that Purple Punch grape. "R2BX" and "RBX2" are Ethos' labels for that release; SeedFinder uses both. Ethos doesn't explain the exact numbering anywhere we could find.
The other Purple Sunset
Weedmaps' strain page describes a different plant: Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet, credited to Dank Genetics, with a 63–70 day flower. Weedmaps itself notes the Ethos version is a separate, Mandarin-based line. Theory Wellness, a Massachusetts dispensary, lists the Ethos pedigree in its data field but then describes Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet in its copy. The two share a Purple Punch parent and a grape-forward nose, but they aren't the same strain. Most of the flower sold as Purple Sunset — and every seed listing we found — points back to Ethos.
Purple Sunset's offspring
SeedFinder lists two named descendants: Southern Roots Genetics' Grape Limeade (Purple Sunset × Tahiti Lime) and Basement Chuckers' Thai Sunset (Purple Sunset RBX2 × Wild Thailand).
Purple Sunset Terpene Profile
Leafly lists caryophyllene as Purple Sunset's dominant terpene, followed by limonene and myrcene. The Ethos seed listing at Seeds Here Now names caryophyllene, limonene and linalool, plus myrcene. Strain guides add ocimene, pinene and humulene in small amounts, but without a named lab behind any of the percentages. That spice-citrus-earth combination is exactly what reviewers describe: clove first, mandarin next, ripe fruit underneath.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — pepper, clove, spice
Limonene — mandarin, citrus peel
Myrcene — earthy, ripe fruit, the heavy body
Linalool — floral, lavender calm
Estimated relative profile for Purple Sunset — order per Leafly (caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene); linalool from a seed retailer listing. No named-lab percentages were available.
- Caryophyllene: The pepper-and-clove spice that Westword's reviewer picked up on the nose and that hits first on the inhale. It's also the most interesting one research-wise — it binds CB2 receptors.
- Limonene: The mandarin and citrus-peel brightness, carried in from the Mandarin Sunset side and doubled by the backcross.
- Myrcene: Earthy, ripe-fruit and commonly linked with heavier, couch-friendly strains — consistent with the sleepy reviews.
- Linalool: The floral, lavender-like note; listed by the Ethos seed retailer and by strain guides, but not by Leafly.
No single terpene is the "grape." Grape-candy strains like Purple Punch and Grape Ape get that note from the whole blend plus minor compounds, so two Purple Sunset batches with the same top three terpenes can still smell quite different.
Appearance
AllBud describes long, tapered, minty-green nugs with deep purple undertones, thin orange hairs and a coat of white crystal trichomes; one reviewer there calls their bud "super bright purple." Westword's reviewer saw dense, spiky, deep-purple buds with some foxtailing and the occasional forest-green nug. Ethos' own description, via SeedFinder, mentions compact, resinous buds that need little trimming and pick up blue tones late in flower. So expect a range — mostly green with purple streaks on one end, nearly all violet on the other.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar of good Purple Sunset and you get sweet grape and berries first, then mandarin orange, then cloves and a light floral note — that's almost word for word how Westword describes it. One Leafly reviewer calls the mandarin "strong," with pine underneath. AllBud's aroma tags read berry, citrus, earthy, flowery and spicy.
The taste flips the order. Westword found it woody and spicy on the first pull, opening into grape, citrus and berry, with a skunky aftertaste. Leafly lists grape, berry and citrus; AllBud adds orange, sour, spicy and sweet, and says the spice shows up as the bowl burns down. The breeder describes it as sweet, spicy and lemony with red fruit and flowers.
Recreational Effects
Purple Sunset is a wind-down strain for most people. On Leafly, where it holds 4.4 stars from 111 ratings, the most-reported effects are:
- Relaxed: the headline effect — a calm, heavy body.
- Hungry: the munchies come on strong. Westword's reviewer flags this too.
- Sleepy: a common report, especially at higher doses.
- Euphoric, happy and creative: mentioned in reviews, and AllBud describes a creative lift before the body calm sets in.
Not everyone agrees on bedtime. Westword's reviewer uses it before bed and after workouts, and some users report near-instant sedation — but two AllBud reviewers say it's not a good bedtime strain, and one Ethos seed retailer even calls it daytime-friendly. That spread is typical for a backcross with two quite different parents.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First few minutes: a soft mood lift and a heavier head.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — relaxed, calm body, the appetite kicking in.
- 1–3 hours: a long settle. At higher doses this is where the sleepiness shows up.
One AllBud reviewer says the effects took a while to arrive, so give it the full 15 minutes before you go back for more.

How Strong Is Purple Sunset?
Purple Sunset is solidly above average, though the published numbers are all over the place:
- Leafly: 18% THC, 0% CBD — while still calling it "higher THC than average."
- AllBud: 22% THC.
- Weedmaps: 18–25% THC.
- Ethos seed listing (Seeds Here Now): 20–25% THC, CBD under 1%.
- Breeder info on SeedFinder: 25–30% total cannabinoids, with 1–2% CBD and 1% CBG.
JointCommerce quotes two unnamed COAs at 23.4% and 20.1% THC, but doesn't name the lab — and its own fact box claims 1–4% CBD next to a 0.06% CBD example. Realistically, a well-grown Purple Sunset lands around 20–24% THC. The breeder's CBD claim is the outlier; most retail flower will be near zero.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Purple Sunset against the 18–25% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Why Purple Sunset Turns Purple
The color isn't a separate gene for "purple weed" — it's anthocyanins, the same pigments that color grapes and blueberries. Purple Punch carries that trait down from Granddaddy Purple and Purple Urkle, and the backcross keeps it front and center. How much shows up depends on the grow: the Ethos seed listing says the purple and magenta are most pronounced late in flower, especially with cooler nights, and the breeder notes blue tones near harvest. That's why one batch can be nearly black-violet and another mostly green with purple streaks.
Color doesn't equal potency or flavor. A deep-purple bud with thin frost is still a weaker bud; judge the trichomes and the nose first.
The Name — and Why It Gets Confused
Ethos never published an explanation we could find, but the name most plausibly just stitches the parents together: Purple from Purple Punch, Sunset from Mandarin Sunset. JointCommerce suggests it refers to the late-flower color and a "sunset-like" terpene profile; that's a nice story without a source. The confusion comes from Sunset Sherbet — a different, very popular "Sunset" strain — which is why some menus and the Weedmaps page describe a Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet plant under the same name. If you want to know which one you're buying, ask the shop for the breeder.
Purple Sunset vs Similar Strains
- vs Purple Punch: the parent. Purple Punch is pure grape-candy-and-blueberry muffin with a sleepy body; Purple Sunset keeps the grape and the calm but adds mandarin and clove, and some cuts are a touch more clear-headed.
- vs Mandarin Cookies: its sister line from Ethos. Mandarin Cookies leans orange and doughy with a more balanced, functional high; Purple Sunset is more grape and more sedating.
- vs Granddaddy Purple: the grandparent. GDP is the classic grape-and-berry knockout; Purple Sunset is brighter on the nose thanks to the citrus.
- vs Sunset Sherbet: different strain, often confused. Sunset Sherbet is a creamy, fruity dessert hybrid from the Cookies family; it's the second parent of the "other" Purple Sunset on Weedmaps.
- vs Grape Ape: if grape is all you want, Grape Ape is the more one-note, heavier option.
- vs Lemon Cherry Gelato: our featured in-stock pick, and honestly not a twin. Both are sweet fruit-and-citrus dessert flowers with a relaxed feel, but Lemon Cherry Gelato runs cherry and lemon instead of grape and mandarin, and it's more balanced than sleepy. For something heavier on our shelf, Super Boof is sweet fruit over gas and hits hard.
Who Purple Sunset Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: evening smokers, people winding down after work or a workout, anyone who wants their appetite back, and grape-and-citrus flavor fans.
Poor fit: anyone who needs to stay sharp and productive, and people prone to THC anxiety — "anxious" is among Leafly's reported negatives. For a sweet, fruit-forward and more balanced flower on our shelf, Lemon Cherry Gelato is the pick, from $69 for a half ounce.
How to Use Purple Sunset THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the grape and mandarin. Lower temperatures, around 350–380°F, keep the fruit and citrus bright; 390–410°F brings out the clove and spice and leans the effect heavier.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — reviewers say it can take a while to land. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full relaxed arc. If you're using it for sleep, take it about an hour before bed. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 30% of reviewers) — though "anxious" also shows up as a negative, so keep the dose low.
- Stress: about 18% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud also lists stress and depression.
- PTSD: about 13% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud reviewers mention it too.
- Low appetite and nausea: listed by AllBud, and consistent with "hungry" being one of the top effects.
- Sleep and pain: Westword's reviewer uses it before bed and after workouts; one AllBud reviewer reports daytime pain relief. Caryophyllene, its top terpene, was identified in a 2008 PNAS study as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.
Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly.
- Anxiety — among the reported negatives, especially at high doses or low tolerance.
- Heavy sedation — some users report near-instant sleepiness. Plan accordingly.
- A "head-only" or tired feeling — one AllBud reviewer felt mostly a head high with a weak body and fatigue rather than lift.
Is Purple Sunset good for beginners? In small doses, yes — it's calm rather than racy. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Purple Sunset Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask for the breeder. An Ethos Genetics cut is the documented one. With a second Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet version in circulation, provenance matters.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Grape and mandarin. Real Purple Sunset has candy grape and berries over orange and spice. Purple color with a flat, hay-like nose is a red flag — color is easy, flavor isn't.
- Frost you can see — white crystal trichomes over the purple, sticky to the touch.
- A proper cure — buds that snap slightly, not crumble to dust or feel damp.
Growing Purple Sunset
Ethos markets Purple Sunset as an easy, adaptable plant, and a home grower quoted by Westword agrees: "For how hard this hits, it's actually pretty easy to handle in the grow."
- Flowering: about 56 days (8 weeks) indoors per SeedFinder; 56–63 days per the Ethos seed retailer. Westword's grower ran it "well over two months," and the Dank Genetics version on Weedmaps is listed at 63–70 days. Watch the trichomes, not the calendar.
- Outdoors: a mid-season harvest per SeedFinder; mid-October for the Weedmaps version.
- Yield: "abundant" per the breeder and "high" per the seed retailer — no gram figures published.
- Structure: compact, with strong secondary branches that the breeder says suit a SCROG screen. Top early to even the canopy.
- Color: drop night temperatures a little in the last two to three weeks to bring out the purple and blue.
- Seeds: feminized only, sold as Purple Sunset R2BX / RBX2.
