Super Skunk Strain: Skunk #1, Taken Back to Its Afghan Roots
The Super Skunk strain is Sensi Seeds' 1990 cross of Skunk #1 with a powerful Afghani hash plant — the breeders' attempt to give the most famous hybrid of the era more weight, more resin and more punch. It worked well enough to win a Cannabis Cup almost immediately, and more than three decades later it's still in Sensi's catalog. The result is mostly indica: dense, frosty buds that finish fast, a loud skunk-and-earth smell with a sweet citrus edge, and a heavy, relaxed body high that leans toward the couch. For that kind of evening flower, start with our THCA flower collection.
It's also not the same thing as Skunk #1 — a mix-up you'll see all over strain sites. Skunk #1 is the parent, a balanced hybrid; Super Skunk is the indica-heavy child. Below: what the breeder and the databases actually say, where the sources disagree (on smell, flowering time, even the trophy), how the high unfolds, what the potency numbers mean, and how to grow it or judge a bag.
A 360° look at Super Skunk's frosty buds.

- Breeder: Sensi Seeds, the Dutch seed company. Sensi lists Super Skunk as released in 1990 and still sells it as regular, feminized and automatic seeds.
- Ancestry: Skunk #1 × Afghani. Sensi describes the second parent as "a powerful Afghan indica from the hash plant family." Leafly, AllBud, Weedmaps and NuggMD all list the same two parents; AllBud calls it an "original Afghani."
- Type: Mostly indica. Sensi gives 80% indica / 20% sativa, AllBud 65/35, Leafly simply "indica." Weedmaps and NuggMD file it as a hybrid.
- THC: 16% on Leafly; about 19% on AllBud and NuggMD; around 20% on one grow guide. Sensi doesn't publish a number.
- Minor cannabinoids: Leafly lists 1% CBG; AllBud and NuggMD list 1% CBD, though AllBud's text gives a wide 0.26–2.4% range.
- Aliases: "Ssk" is Leafly's abbreviation. Several other seed banks sell their own "Super Skunk," which is why you'll see breeder-specific guides online — this page is about Sensi's original.
Where the parents come from
- Skunk #1 — Leafly credits Sacred Seed Co. with building it from Afghani, Acapulco Gold and Colombian Gold over several generations; Weedmaps notes that Sam Skunkman's stabilized seeds later reached the Netherlands, where Sensi listed them. It's a balanced hybrid with myrcene as its dominant terpene, per Leafly.
- The Afghani — never named as a specific cultivar. SeedFinder's write-up says the final version drew on Afghani lines from Sensi's expanding gene library in the late 1980s, with breeders crossing many Afghani cultivars with both male and female Skunk #1 plants before settling on the keeper. That Afghan side brings the resin, the density, the short flowering time and the heavy body.
How Super Skunk was bred
SeedFinder's copy of Sensi's description calls Super Skunk "the first serious project to breed a next-level cannabis hybrid" from Skunk #1, and dates it three years after Shiva Skunk, Sensi's other Skunk-family indica. The goal, in Sensi's words, was to add flavor, weight and potency — essentially to take a sativa-leaning hybrid back toward its Afghan roots. Afghan-Skunk experiments show up in the earliest Seed Bank catalogs, but the version sold today is the one finalized in 1990.
The Cannabis Cup record
Sensi says Super Skunk "won the Mostly Indica Cannabis Cup shortly after its initial launch." SeedFinder's award list is a little more specific — and a little different: 1st place in Mostly Indica at the 1990 High Times Cannabis Cup, credited to The Seed Bank; 3rd in Best Cannabis at the 1992 Cup for an entry by Holland Vijaya Seeds; and 2nd in Hydro at the 2015 Highlife Cup for Sensi Seeds. We couldn't find an official 1990 results page to confirm who entered that first-place jar, and Sensi's own product pages tag the regular seeds "Gold" and the feminized seeds "Silver." Either way, it's a top finish at the Cup in its debut year.
Super Skunk's offspring
SeedFinder counts 162 direct descendants. The famous one is Sour Diesel — Leafly's family tree lists Super Skunk as a parent, and the most-cited account crosses it with Chemdawg, though that history is disputed. Leafly also lists Soma Seeds' Lavender (Afghani × Super Skunk), and Sensi's own Great White Shark is White Widow × Super Skunk. Bodhi's Appalachian Super Skunk and Pukka's Afgani Skunk carry it too.
Super Skunk Terpene Profile
Leafly lists caryophyllene as the dominant terpene, followed by limonene and humulene. NuggMD adds myrcene, pinene and linalool, and one grow guide puts myrcene and caryophyllene on top — but none of them publish lab percentages, so treat the order as approximate. Caryophyllene is the one with real research behind it: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, wood
Limonene — citrus, the sweet edge
Humulene — earthy, hoppy, woody
Myrcene — earthy, musky, the heavy body
Estimated relative profile for Super Skunk — order per Leafly (caryophyllene, limonene, humulene); myrcene from NuggMD and a grow guide. No lab percentages are published, so these bars are estimates, not measurements.
- Caryophyllene: The pepper and spice under the skunk — the "spicy" tag AllBud and Weedmaps both report.
- Limonene: The sweet citrus note Sensi describes, which some growers compare to mandarin orange.
- Humulene: Earthy, woody and hop-like — it fills in the dank, earthy base.
- Myrcene: Skunk #1's dominant terpene on Leafly and likely part of Super Skunk's musky base and heavy body feel.
The skunk smell itself isn't really a terpene story. A 2021 ACS Omega study traced cannabis's skunky odor to trace volatile sulfur compounds — especially 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol — present in tiny amounts but loud to the nose. That's why two Super Skunk jars with similar terpene lists can smell very different.
Appearance
Super Skunk looks like the Afghan side of its family. Sensi describes bright green, spiky, dense buds with large calyxes, and says indoor plants "build colossal, crystalline colas." NuggMD reports compact, kale-green nugs with frizzy orange hairs; AllBud describes a lighter green with a light haze of trichomes. Expect heavy, tight flowers rather than airy sativa spears — and a cut that's grown well should be visibly frosted.
Aroma and Flavor
This is where sources split. Leafly calls it ideal "for anyone who enjoys an extra skunky aroma" and tags the flavor skunk, pungent and earthy; Weedmaps' user tags run skunk 54%, earthy 26% and spicy/herbal 21%. AllBud lists skunky, spicy, sweet and woody flavors over an earthy, pungent nose. Leafly reviewers add gassy and peppery notes.
Sensi, on the other hand, describes a smoother and fruitier smoke than typical skunk — citrus-dominant, with earthy, spicy base notes that build toward harvest — and says "some have even compared the flavour to mandarin orange." One of its seed reviewers found it less pungent than some Skunk #1 plants. The honest read: the classic Super Skunk jar is skunk and earth first, with a sweet citrus edge that comes through on a clean, well-cured batch. A few AllBud reviewers report the opposite problem — batches with barely any skunk at all, which usually means old or mislabeled flower.
Recreational Effects
Super Skunk is a body strain. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.2 rating from 628 reviews, the most-reported effects are:
- Relaxed: the headline. Leafly describes "bold, relaxing effects that you can feel through your entire body," and one reviewer notes a "rapid onset of relaxation."
- Sleepy: the second-most reported effect — this is an evening strain.
- Hungry: a strong case of the munchies is common.
- Euphoric and happy: AllBud describes a "euphoric body buzz" with improved mood and a carefree attitude; Sensi says the deep relaxation is "enlivened by the sativa element."
- Giggly, for some: one Leafly reviewer simply says, "This strain made me silly."
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First few minutes: a quick wave of calm and a mood lift — reviewers describe the onset as fast.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — heavy, warm body relaxation with a happy, unbothered head.
- 1–3 hours: a slow slide toward sleepy and hungry. At higher doses, expect couch-lock.
One Leafly reviewer warns it "packs a punch" and is better suited to experienced smokers. Save it for after your to-do list is done.

How Strong Is Super Skunk?
Super Skunk is solid mid-range by today's standards — its reputation comes from the body effect and the yield, not a record THC number. The published figures:
- Leafly: 16% THC, 1% CBG.
- AllBud: 19% or higher, with a note that levels vary by batch and lab; CBD around 1%.
- NuggMD: up to 19% THC, 1% CBD.
- Grow guides: around 20%, without lab data behind it.
- Sensi Seeds: no THC figure published.
One Leafly reviewer says a batch they bought tested at 28.1% THC with 3% terpenes — we can't verify that, and it's well outside every other source. Realistically, expect the high teens to around 20%, with modern selections and THCA flower sometimes testing higher.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Super Skunk against the 16–20% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Super Skunk vs Skunk #1: What's the Difference?
They share a name and half a family tree, but they're different strains:
- Genetics: Skunk #1 is the Afghani × Acapulco Gold × Colombian Gold hybrid Leafly credits to Sacred Seed Co. Super Skunk is Skunk #1 crossed back to another Afghani.
- Balance: Skunk #1 is a balanced hybrid with a livelier head; Super Skunk is about 80% indica per Sensi, heavier and sleepier.
- Terpenes: Leafly lists myrcene as Skunk #1's dominant terpene and caryophyllene for Super Skunk — more spice, more pepper.
- Growing: Super Skunk was bred for more weight and a shorter bloom — SeedFinder lists 45–50 days.
If you liked Skunk #1 but wanted it to hit the body harder, Super Skunk is the answer the Dutch breeders came up with.
Super Skunk vs Similar Strains
- vs Sour Diesel: the most famous strain with Super Skunk in its tree. Sour Diesel takes the skunk and adds gas, lemon and a fast, energizing high — the opposite end of the day.
- vs UK Cheese: another Skunk #1 descendant — a single pungent phenotype with a sharp, savory cheese funk and a more balanced high.
- vs Lavender: Soma Seeds' Afghani × Super Skunk child, with a floral, sweeter nose and the same calm body.
- vs Northern Lights and Afghan Kush: fellow Afghan-heavy indicas from the same Dutch-seed-bank era. Earthier and sweeter, less skunk, similar sleepy finish.
- vs White Widow: crossed with Super Skunk to make Sensi's Great White Shark. White Widow is the more balanced, more cerebral of the two.
- vs Mule Fuel: our featured in-stock pick, and honestly not a twin. Both are loud, earthy and heavy in the body, but Mule Fuel is a modern GMO Cookies × Lurch cross with garlic and gas instead of classic skunk. Prefer concentrates? Our HBIC live rosin is the solventless option on our shelf.
Who Super Skunk Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: evening smokers who want to unwind, people chasing appetite or sleep, fans of old-school Dutch genetics and real skunk funk, and home growers who want a fast, forgiving plant.
Poor fit: anyone who needs to stay productive, people who want candy or dessert flavors, and anyone prone to THC paranoia — "paranoid" is one of Leafly's reported negatives. For a heavy, pungent evening flower on our shelf, Mule Fuel is the pick, from $59.
How to Use Super Skunk THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: a good way to taste the citrus edge under the skunk. Lower temperatures, around 350–380°F, keep it brighter; 390–410°F brings out the pepper, earth and the heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — reviewers say it comes on fast and hits hard. Regular users usually find two or three hits enough for the full body melt. Use it close to bedtime. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Stress: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 34% of reviewers).
- Anxiety: about 29% of Leafly reviewers — though "paranoid" also shows up as a negative, so start low.
- Pain: about 28% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud lists chronic pain and migraines.
- Sleep and appetite: AllBud lists insomnia and loss of appetite, consistent with the sleepy, hungry headline effects. It also lists depression and PTSD.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly and AllBud.
- Paranoia — reported on Leafly and AllBud, though AllBud says it's less common than dry mouth and red eyes.
- Couch-lock and drowsiness — the point for some, a problem in the daytime.
- Harshness — one AllBud reviewer found the concentrate harsh.
Is Super Skunk good for sleep? Many people use it that way — "sleepy" is its second-most reported effect. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Super Skunk Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask for the breeder. Several seed banks sell a "Super Skunk." Sensi Seeds is the original; others may be different crosses under the same name.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Skunk you can smell through the bag. Real Super Skunk is pungent and earthy with a sweet citrus edge. Flat, hay-like or odorless flower is old, poorly cured or mislabeled.
- Dense, frosty buds — tight, heavy nugs with visible trichomes and orange hairs. Airy, fluffy flower doesn't fit this strain.
- A proper cure — a little stickiness and a clean burn. A grassy smell means it was rushed.
Growing Super Skunk
Super Skunk is one of the classic "first grow" strains — Sensi now calls it suitable for "novice growers and experts alike," though older Sensi copy said it "cannot be recommended to the novice grower," and one Sensi reviewer found it a bit more sensitive to watering and light than Skunk #1.
- Flowering: fast. SeedFinder lists 45–50 days; Sensi's regular page says about seven weeks; Weedmaps and NuggMD say 8–10 weeks. One Sensi reviewer says it needs at least 60 days. Watch the trichomes, not the calendar.
- Yield: heavy. Leafly lists about 450–550 g/m²; SeedFinder up to 125 g per plant indoors and 500 g in a greenhouse.
- Height: average — SeedFinder gives 120–150 cm. Sensi says plants are uniform, sturdy and conical, which suits SOG and SCROG. Outdoors in long, warm summers, they can reach "small tree" size.
- Smell control: Sensi warns the scent gets intense late in flower; use a carbon filter or air scrubber indoors.
- Feeding and training: Leafly calls it a medium-to-heavy feeder that responds well to topping.
- Seeds: Sensi sells regular, feminized and automatic versions. (SeedFinder's basic info still says it was never feminized — that's out of date.)
