Hemp Flower vs. CBD Flower: Decoding the Terminology
The difference between hemp flower vs. CBD flower — and how they relate to THCA flower, marijuana, and everything in between — is one of the most misunderstood topics in the entire cannabis space. If you’ve stared at product labels feeling confused about what you’re actually buying, this guide is for you.
Explore our full lineup: CBD flower and THCA flower — both legal, both hemp-derived, very different experiences.
What All Cannabis Has in Common
Hemp, marijuana, CBD flower, THCA flower, weed, pot, reefer — all of these terms describe the same species: Cannabis sativa. The legal and experiential difference comes down to one number: the concentration of delta-9 THC.
Under the 2018 Farm Bill, any cannabis plant with less than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis is classified as hemp. Everything above that threshold is legally classified as marijuana. A simple way to think about it: high-THC cannabis vs. low-THC cannabis. All other terminology is essentially marketing or chemistry.
What Is CBD Flower?
CBD flower (more accurately: CBDA flower) is hemp flower bred to produce high concentrations of CBD — cannabidiol — with very low THCA and near-zero delta-9 THC. When smoked or vaporized, CBDA decarboxylates and converts to CBD.
CBD flower does not produce a psychoactive high. It delivers the therapeutic benefits of CBD — relaxation, stress relief, anti-inflammatory support, and sleep aid — without intoxication. It’s ideal for daily wellness use, and its effects are rapid-onset compared to CBD oils or edibles.
Note the same linguistic quirk that applies to THCA flower: technically, what we call CBD flower is really CBDA flower, because the CBD hasn’t been activated yet. The market just settled on the less accurate term.
What Is THCA Flower?
THCA flower is cannabis bred for high THCA content. Like CBD flower, it contains less than 0.3% delta-9 THC in its unsmoked state — qualifying it legally as hemp. But when you smoke or vaporize THCA flower, the THCA converts to THC through decarboxylation, producing a full psychoactive effect. In practice, THCA flower is indistinguishable from dispensary cannabis.

What Is Hemp Flower?
Hemp flower is a broad umbrella term for any cannabis flower that legally qualifies as hemp. Under this umbrella, you’ll find:
- CBD flower — high CBD, non-psychoactive
- THCA flower — high THCA, fully psychoactive when smoked
- CBG flower — high CBG, non-psychoactive, often energizing
- THCV flower — trace THCV, mild stimulating effects
- Delta 8 flower — CBD flower sprayed with Delta 8 distillate
The problem with simply buying “hemp flower” without more specifics? You might get a relaxing non-psychoactive CBD experience, or you might get something that gets you very high. Always know which category you’re buying.

The answer depends entirely on what you want:

- If you want the full cannabis experience, legally, without a dispensary — THCA flower is the answer.
