Glass vape cartridge next to a jar of golden live rosin — what a real live rosin cart contains, Diesel Hemp

Lies about “Live Rosin” Vape Carts

Updated July 2026 · By Natalie Mondine, CEO, Diesel Hemp

Marketing, it is a slippery slope and companies know we do not read the fine print or ingredients on just about everything we buy. This article is going to focus on live rosin vape carts, what they should be compared to what is being sold. The truth about live rosin vape carts is that most of the carts sold do not contain any live rosin.

In short: A real live rosin vape cart has ONE ingredient — live rosin. Most “live rosin” carts on the market are distillate with rosin-flavored or synthetic terpenes. Read the ingredients and the COA before you buy.

What is Live Rosin?

Live rosin is the highest caliber cannabis extract you can consume, whether in edibles, topicals or inhalation. The “live” refers to cannabis flower that has been frozen fresh to preserve all the terpenes. “Rosin” not to be confused with “resin” refers to the solventless extraction process using ice cold water and bubble hash bags. For a deeper explanation, read our guide on live rosin vs. live resin.

Types of Live Rosin

Live rosin can be from any cannabis material including CBD flower and THC flower. The popular of the two is THC live rosin which is actually THCA live rosin because the extract (rosin) is usually not decarboxylated unless the rosin is being used in an edibles such as gummies or other ingestible products. This is also true about THC flower, the majority of the THC is in the acidic form THCA prior to heating or smoking the flower.

THCA Live Rosin Vape Cart

THCA live rosin vape carts are the products I would like to focus on because most people do not understand what they are actually purchasing compared to what they think they are purchasing.

A THCA live rosin vape cart should only have one ingredient, THCA live rosin. Companies are marketing Live Rosin vape pens but if you pay close attention you will see the products do not contain 100% live rosin.

Examples of so called “ Live Rosin” Vape Carts

1.   A vape cart that contains so called "live rosin" terpenes and either a CBD or THCA distillate. Hilarious that companies call terpenes that are steam extracted from fresh cannabis material "live rosin" terpenes. I will give them the “live” part because the material is fresh but there is no “rosin”. Furthermore, most steam terpenes are garbage and they have to process the hell out of them to get a profile that tastes good.

2.   A vape cart that contains a small amount of either CBD or THCA live rosin and the rest is a distillate. This product has more credibility than the pervious example, but still, is it a true “live rosin” vape cart? NO.

3.   A vape cart that contains synthetic terpenes blended to taste similar to a live rosin cannabis strain then added to a distillate which would be just a THCA cart or CBD cart. This is probably the worst of the examples as the product contains no live terpenes or rosins.

Difficulty of True Live Rosin Carts?

Starting with CBD live rosin, it is more difficult to work with compared to THCA live rosin. First, CBD strains do not wash well, meaning the extraction yields are low. Second, CBD live rosin does not liquify as easily as THCA and can turn a darker color which is less appealing than a nice gold color.

THCA live rosin is easier to work with and if you are buying from a legal marijuana dispensary, there are no issues. If you are buying hemp derived THCA live rosin from a store or online, the potential issue is the legality.

In order to get the live rosin extract into a vape cart, the extract needs to be heated. Heating the extract causes the THCA to convert to THC which is federally illegal above .3%. Yes, when you smoke THCA the heat converts it into THC which gets you high. As of now there is a loophole that allows for THCA products to be sold as long as the THC in the product is less than .3%.

In conclusion, if you are buying a live rosin vape cart you should expect to pay a premium for a 100% pure live rosin cart. Do not be fooled by the big neon lights flashing “Live Rosin” without reading the ingredients. Furthermore, I would also look into the company selling the product because as we know…companies lie, so know the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if a live rosin vape cart is real?

Read the ingredients — a real live rosin cart lists exactly one: live rosin. Then check the COA. If the label mentions distillate, “live rosin terpenes,” added terpenes, or any cutting agent, it is not a true live rosin cart.

Why are real live rosin carts more expensive?

Live rosin is solventless and labor-intensive — fresh-frozen flower, ice-water washing, freeze-drying, and pressing yield far less product than solvent extraction. A $25 “live rosin” cart is almost certainly mostly distillate.
