Baklava Strain: OG Gas Up Front, Honey and Cream Behind
The Baklava strain is Alien Labs' cross of Kosher Kush and Gelato 41, bred in California in 2019. The name fits the jar: an OG-gas nose up front and a creamy, buttery, honey-and-nut finish behind it, like the pastry. Most smokers report a tingly, focused head and a relaxed body that gets heavier the more you smoke. It fits the dessert-and-gas corner of our THCA flower collection.
It also gets confused a lot. A Barcelona-linked seed company, The Plug Seedbank, sells a different strain called Baklava with Wedding Cake and Gelato in its background, and one popular guide mixes the two. Below: both lineages, what the potency numbers actually mean, the terpene profile, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Baklava's frosty buds.

- Type: Indica-leaning hybrid. AllBud and GrowDiaries list it 60% indica / 40% sativa, SeedFinder calls The Plug's version "mostly indica," The Bluntness says "slightly indica-dominant," and Leafly lists a plain hybrid. The reported effects, a clear, focused start and a relaxed body, fit a balanced-to-indica hybrid.
- Ancestry (Alien Labs): Kosher Kush × Gelato 41. Kosher Kush is the Los Angeles OG Kush-family clone made famous by Reserva Privada and DNA Genetics; Gelato 41 is a cut of Gelato, the Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC dessert line.
- Breeder: Alien Labs, the California brand behind strains like Melonade (pheno-hunted with Midwest Best), Area 41 and Biskanté. Leafly, AllBud and The Bluntness all credit the Kosher Kush × Gelato 41 cross to Alien Labs.
- THC: Leafly lists 21%, AllBud 23–25%, GrowDiaries 24%; The Bluntness says it "frequently" tests above 25%.
- CBD and minors: Negligible CBD (GrowDiaries lists 0.1%). Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
Alien Labs Baklava vs The Plug Seedbank Baklava
There are two strains on menus under this name, and they aren't the same plant:
- Alien Labs Baklava: Kosher Kush × Gelato 41, bred in 2019 and grown by Alien Labs and its partner Connected Cannabis Co. The Bluntness notes neither company publishes grow details, and the genetics weren't released as seeds. This is the version Leafly and AllBud describe, and the one behind the strain's reputation.
- The Plug Seedbank Baklava: a feminized seed line. The Bluntness lists it as Wedding Cake × Gelato; GrowDiaries describes it as coming from "crossbreeding projects involving Gelato #41 and Wedding Cake." Growers report a creamy, sweet, Gelato-like taste and two distinct phenotypes from the seeds.
One widely read guide credits The Plug with stabilizing the Kosher Kush × Gelato 41 cross, but it cites no source, and it contradicts both The Bluntness and GrowDiaries. The safe reading: if it's from Alien Labs or Connected, it's Kosher Kush × Gelato 41; if it was grown from seed, it's most likely The Plug's line. Both share Gelato, which is why they taste alike.
Baklava Terpene Profile
Sources disagree on the lead terpene. Leafly lists limonene as dominant, followed by myrcene and caryophyllene. The Bluntness describes high beta-caryophyllene, myrcene and terpinolene, and one long-form guide reports a caryophyllene-led profile with humulene and linalool in support. The common thread is the trio of limonene, myrcene and caryophyllene: citrus-cream sweetness, an earthy body and a peppery OG backbone.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Limonene — citrus-cream sweetness, mood lift
Myrcene — earthy, relaxed body
Caryophyllene — pepper, OG gas backbone
Linalool — floral, calm finish
Typical relative profile for Baklava — limonene-led per Leafly. Some cuts test caryophyllene-first; ask for the batch COA.
- Limonene: The bright, citrus-sweet top note under the cream, and a driver of the upbeat first half of the high.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky; it gives Baklava its relaxed floor and the heavier body later on.
- Caryophyllene: The peppery, fuel-edged spice from the Kosher Kush side, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Linalool: A light floral, lavender edge some batches show on a low-temperature vape.
The honey-and-nut note isn't a single terpene. It's the overall chemistry of the Gelato side meeting the Kush, which is also why the flavor shifts so much between growers.
Appearance
AllBud describes dense, grape-shaped, "fluffy neon green" nugs with lots of thin orange hairs and a coat of purple-tinted white trichomes. The Bluntness describes green, purple, white and slightly yellow hues under heavy frost. Cooler grow rooms push more lavender into the leaves, a Gelato trait. The resin coverage is a big part of its bag appeal, and the sticky buds break up best in a grinder rather than by hand.
Aroma and Flavor
Leafly's description sums it up: "a pure OG gas nose and a creamy gelato style back end." Crack a jar and you get Kosher Kush fuel and earth first, then sweet cream, butter and vanilla as it opens up. Break a bud and pepper, pine and a faint diesel come forward. Leafly lists tar, vanilla and butter as its top flavors, and reviewers describe "strong notes of honey with a nutty taste," which is where the pastry name earns itself. AllBud adds berry, citrus and a spicy-sweet finish; The Bluntness calls it strong cream with sweet accents and slight berry notes. On a low-temperature vape the cream and citrus lead; in a joint the gas and spice take over on the exhale.
Recreational Effects
Baklava's effects split along its parents. The Gelato side gives a clear, upbeat head; the Kosher Kush side brings a relaxed, heavy body. On Leafly, the top-reported effects are:
- Tingly: a body buzz that shows up early.
- Focused: many reviewers say they stayed on task, a rarity for a Kush cross.
- Creative: a good fit for music, cooking or hobbies.
- Relaxed and happy: the most common theme in written reviews, with euphoria and an uplifted mood alongside.
AllBud lists focus, relaxing and uplifting, and warns that the heavy body high can leave you "locked to the couch." GrowDiaries growers report euphoric, happy and relaxed. Leafly's summary calls it potent and better suited to experienced consumers.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First few minutes: a fast, clear head lift and a lighter mood.
- 20–40 minutes: the body catches up, with shoulders loosening, a tingly calm and, often, an appetite.
- 1–2 hours: the plateau, relaxed and content. Leafly reviewers say "the high lasts long," and higher doses settle into couch-lock and sleep.
Is Baklava a head high or a body high? Both, in that order. The Bluntness notes reviewers describe a head high for about an hour before it settles into clear-headed relaxation, and that the balance varies a lot by person.

Baklava's sticky, resin-heavy buds break up best in a grinder.

How Strong Is Baklava?
Baklava is a strong strain but not a record-setter. The numbers vary by source and grower:
- Leafly: 21% THC, which it calls higher than average, plus about 1% CBG.
- AllBud: 23–25%.
- GrowDiaries: 24% average, with 0.1% CBD.
- The Bluntness: frequently above 25% for Alien Labs flower.
- JointCommerce: most batches 20–26%, with outliers from 18% to 28% (uncited).
Reviewers consistently describe "very strong effects," and the Kush body makes it feel heavier than the number suggests at higher doses. A realistic expectation for well-grown flower is the low-to-mid 20s.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Baklava against the 21–25% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Baklava vs Similar Strains
- vs Gelato 41: the creamy parent. Baklava adds Kosher Kush gas and a heavier body; Gelato 41 is sweeter and brighter.
- vs Kosher Kush: the gassy, sleepy parent. Baklava is more dessert-forward and more functional early on.
- vs Wedding Cake: the vanilla-and-pepper dessert benchmark, and part of The Plug's Baklava line. Similar cream, less gas.
- vs Cake Batter and Vanilla Frosting: two more vanilla-dough dessert strains with a fuel finish. Vanilla Frosting is the closest on flavor; Baklava has the stronger honey-nut note.
- vs Ice Cream Cake: creamier and sleepier, with less of Baklava's focused start.
- vs Melonade: another Alien Labs release, but the opposite mood: bright, citrus and energetic.
Who Baklava Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced smokers who want an evening dessert strain with real gas; anyone who likes Gelato's flavor but wants more body; focused hobbies and winding down after work.
Poor fit: beginners, anyone who needs to stay sharp for hours, or someone after a bright daytime sativa. For a dessert profile on our shelf, Blueberry Pancakes is the closest pick, and Mule Fuel covers the gassy, indica-leaning side.
How to Use Baklava THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the cream and honey under the gas. Around 350–380°F keeps the citrus-cream and floral notes; 390–410°F brings out the pepper, wood and Kush weight.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes before taking more. The body effect builds late. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited use on Leafly, about 36% of reviewers, though "anxious" is also one of its listed negatives, so dose matters.
- Stress: about 27% of Leafly reviewers.
- Low mood: about 25%, consistent with the happy, uplifted reports.
- Aches, appetite and sleep: AllBud lists chronic pain, appetite loss, nausea and fatigue, and several Leafly reviewers use it at night for sleep.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly and GrowDiaries.
- Anxiety — listed among Leafly's top negatives, mostly at high doses or low tolerance.
- Dizziness — occasionally reported, usually from overdoing it.
- Couch-lock and next-day grogginess — the Kush body can hit hard late in the session.
Is Baklava good for sleep? At higher doses, often yes; in small amounts it's more of a relaxed, focused evening strain. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Baklava Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask which Baklava. A good seller knows whether it's the Alien Labs Kosher Kush × Gelato 41 or a Plug Seedbank seed grow. Either can be good, but they aren't the same plant.
- Gas and cream. A true Alien Labs-style Baklava has both. Pure sweetness with no fuel suggests a different phenotype; pure earth with no cream suggests a poor cure.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Frost and density, with trichomes inside the bud, not just on top, and a sticky break.
- A proper cure — honey and cream should come through; hay or grass means it was rushed.
Growing Baklava
Alien Labs has never released its Baklava as seeds or published grow notes, so most grow data comes from The Plug Seedbank's feminized line. GrowDiaries growers rate it difficult; one long-form guide calls it medium.
- Flowering: about 9 weeks indoors. SeedFinder lists roughly 63 days for The Plug's version; other guides give 8–10 weeks, most finishing around days 63–70.
- Yield: GrowDiaries rates it high; one outdoor grower reported about 3.5 lb from three plants.
- Height: medium indoors, with a 1.5–2x stretch after the flip. Outdoor plants have been reported around 7 ft.
- Outdoors: harvest from late September to mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere. Growers report red and purple color as nights cool.
- Phenotypes: Seedsman reviewers report two distinct phenotypes from Plug seeds; pick for the cream-and-gas nose.
