Kosher Kush Strain: The Award-Winning LA OG for Nighttime

The Kosher Kush strain is a heavy indica out of Los Angeles — an OG Kush-family clone that circulated underground under an earlier clone name before Reserva Privada renamed it, released it as seed with sister company DNA Genetics, and won the indica category at the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. It smells earthy, pungent and piney with a sharp lemon edge, and it delivers a sleepy, hungry, deeply relaxed body high. It sits in the gassy, heavy corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also a strain with more stories than paperwork. The lineage is murky, the award list varies depending on who's counting, and the famous "blessed by a rabbi" line is exactly that — a line. Below: what's verifiable about its origin, the real awards record, how the high unfolds, how strong it is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

Kosher Kush Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica. Leafly and AllBud list it as indica; AskGrowers puts it at 90% indica. Some seed listings say 70/30, which reflects the seed line rather than the original clone.
  • Ancestry: OG Kush-derived. Leafly lists OG Kush as its parent and DNA Genetics describes it as "born from crossing the OG Kush." SeedFinder, using the breeder's own notes, lists the parent simply as an earlier LA clone of unknown, mostly indica ancestry. Verano lists it as OG Kush × unknown. The honest answer: an LA OG Kush cut whose exact parents were never documented.
  • Breeder: Reserva Privada, DNA Genetics' sister line, released and competed with it; DNA Genetics sells the seeds today. Neither claims to have bred the original clone.
  • THC: Leafly lists 21%; Cannigma's lab average is about 18.5%; AllBud lists 22–25%; AskGrowers and Blimburn Seeds cite up to 29%.
  • CBD: Negligible — under 1%. Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
  • Aliases: Kosher OG, KK.

Where the name came from

Per the breeder's notes on SeedFinder, the strain started as a clone-only cut passed among a group of growers in Los Angeles under an earlier name. Reserva Privada got a cutting, renamed it Kosher Kush, and later released it as seed — before that, Leafly notes, you could only get it as a clone.

The rabbi story is the part everyone repeats. AllBud and AskGrowers call it the first strain "blessed by a rabbi." Cannigma traces the tale to Canopy Growth's Adam Greenblatt, relaying DNA Genetics founders Don Morris and Aaron Yarkoni: seedlings left under a bathroom light at a party, and a newly ordained rabbi who blessed them. Cannigma itself calls it a tall tale. Treat it as folklore — fun, unverified, and nothing to do with how the flower smokes.

The awards record — what's verified

Kosher Kush's reputation rests on its Cannabis Cup run, but sources disagree on the details:

  • 2011 High Times Cannabis Cup, Amsterdam: 1st place (tie) in the Seed Company Indica category for Reserva Privada and Reserva Privada Colorado, per Westword's results report. This is the best-documented win.
  • 2010: Leafly, AllBud, SeedFinder and DNA Genetics all credit a Best Indica win at the 2010 Cannabis Cup.
  • 2012: SeedFinder and Cannigma list another indica 1st place; DNA Genetics and AskGrowers describe it as 1st at the 2012 Medical Cannabis Cup.
  • Later placings (SeedFinder): 2nd and 3rd in hydro at Spannabis 2012, 3rd indica at the 2014 High Times Cup for DNA Genetics, and 2nd in a Kush category at the 2018 Highlife Cup.

Leafly also calls it 2011's "Best Strain"; we couldn't confirm an overall Cup win from results coverage, so take that one with salt.

Kosher Kush's offspring

Kosher Kush became a breeding workhorse. Leafly lists 24k Gold and Brownie Scout (Platinum GSC × Kosher Kush) as children; Cannigma adds Kosher Tangie, Kosher Sorbet, Chocolope Kush and Kosher Choco Kush. DNA Genetics also crossed it with The OG #18.

Kosher Kush Terpene Profile

Leafly lists myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by limonene and caryophyllene. Cannigma's lab data puts limonene and myrcene neck and neck (about 0.42% each), with caryophyllene and linalool behind; AskGrowers adds small amounts of pinene and humulene. Caryophyllene stands out scientifically — a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Myrcene — earthy, musky, the heavy body

Limonene — the lemon edge on the exhale

Caryophyllene — pepper and OG spice

Linalool — floral calm, bedtime lean

Typical relative profile for Kosher Kush — myrcene-led per Leafly. Lemon-forward phenotypes push limonene close to the top.

  • Myrcene: Earthy and musky — the terpene most associated with Kosher Kush's sleepy, heavy-bodied reputation.
  • Limonene: The sweet lemon that shows up when you smoke it, and part of the mood lift before the body takes over.
  • Caryophyllene: Pepper and spice — the classic OG Kush backbone, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
  • Linalool: Floral and calming in small amounts; it nudges the profile toward bedtime.

Several sources note two expressions: a lemon-forward cut with sharper gas, and a deeper earthy-gas cut with pepper and incense. Same strain, different terpene balance.

Appearance

Kosher Kush looks like a textbook OG indica: dense, chunky, resinous buds in deep forest green, threaded with orange pistils and buried under a thick coat of white trichomes. Blimburn Seeds notes occasional purple accents. Growers on Leafly and SeedFinder point out a good bud-to-leaf ratio, which is why well-grown Kosher Kush looks tight and clean in the jar.

Aroma and Flavor

Open the jar and the first hit is pungent — earthy, woody pine and spice, with the sharp OG funk that made the Kush family famous. AskGrowers describes the aroma as "strong, herbal, spicy, and piney"; SeedFinder growers add eucalyptus and mint. The inhale is earthy and pungent; on the exhale it turns sweeter, with lemon and citrus over pepper and wood. Leafly's flavor tags are earthy, pungent and woody; AllBud lists herbal, lemon, pine, sweet and woody. Verano adds a musky, fruity note.

Recreational Effects

Kosher Kush is an evening strain. It opens with a calm, happy head change, then the body gets heavy and the couch starts to look good. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.5 rating from more than a thousand reviews, the top-reported effects are:

  • Sleepy: the headline effect — heavy eyelids and yawns at higher doses.
  • Relaxed: a deep, full-body calm that loosens tension.
  • Hungry: expect the munchies.
  • Happy and euphoric: AllBud's users add a gentle mood lift before the body takes over.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 10–20 minutes: a mellow, contented head change and loosening shoulders.
  • About an hour in: the peak — heavy, relaxed, a little spacey, and hungry.
  • 2–4 hours: a slow taper toward sleep. AskGrowers describes the buzz as "lazy, but powerful."

Plan it for the end of the day. It isn't a get-things-done strain.

How Strong Is Kosher Kush?

Strong, but the numbers depend on who's testing:

  • Leafly: 21% THC, about 1% CBG.
  • Cannigma (lab averages): about 18.5% THC.
  • AllBud: 22–25%.
  • DNA Genetics seed listing: about 22%.
  • AskGrowers and Blimburn Seeds: up to 29% on top batches.

So a well-grown Kosher Kush typically lands around 20–25%, with standout batches higher. What makes it feel strong is the heavy, myrcene-led body effect — even a mid-20s batch can put you on the couch. For newer users that means small hits and patience.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Kosher Kush batch against the 18–29% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Kosher Kush vs Similar Strains

  • vs OG Kush: the parent family. OG Kush is more balanced and heady; Kosher Kush is the heavier, sleepier, more indica expression.
  • vs Master Kush and Hindu Kush: old-school earthy indicas. Kosher Kush keeps the earth but adds OG gas and a lemon edge.
  • vs Bubba Kush: similar sleepy, hungry outcome; Bubba is sweeter and more coffee-chocolate, Kosher is gassier and more piney.
  • vs Brownie Scout: its offspring with Platinum GSC — dessert-sweet on top of the Kosher Kush body.
  • vs Mule Fuel: GMO Cookies × Lurch — not Kosher Kush genetics, but the same heavy, earthy-gas, evening indica lane. It's the closest match on our shelf.
  • Commonly suggested alternatives: AskGrowers points to Strawberry Banana and Sunset Sherbet for a similar indica-leaning potency, though both are much sweeter.

Who Kosher Kush Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: evening and nighttime use, people who like earthy, gassy OG flavors, and anyone after a heavy, relaxed body high or a strong appetite kick.

Poor fit: daytime productivity, social energy, or beginners who aren't ready to lose the rest of the evening. For something brighter from our shelf, Straw Gua Mintz is the more upbeat pick.

How to Use Kosher Kush THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the cleanest way to taste the lemon and pine under the earth. Around 350–370°F keeps the citrus; 390–410°F brings out the heavy myrcene body.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small hit, then wait 15–20 minutes — the body effect builds. Regular users usually find two or three hits is plenty for a full evening. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: the most-cited reason (about 34% of Leafly reviewers).
  • Pain: about 32% report using it for aches and pain.
  • Insomnia: about 30% — consistent with "sleepy" as its top effect.
  • Appetite: "hungry" is among its top effects, and AllBud reviewers cite loss of appetite as a reason they reach for it.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — Leafly's most-reported negatives.
  • Dizziness or headache — occasionally reported, usually from too much too fast.
  • Grogginess — at high doses it can carry into the next morning.
  • Anxiety or paranoia — less common with a heavy indica like this, but possible at high doses or low tolerance.

Don't drive or operate anything after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication — especially sedatives or sleep aids — are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Kosher Kush Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 29%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Pungent OG nose. Real Kosher Kush hits hard with earth, pine and fuel; a faint, grassy smell means a weak cut or a bad cure.
  • Dense, heavy buds with trichomes inside, not just a dusting on top.
  • Clean trim — the strain's bud-to-leaf ratio makes tidy nugs easy, so leafy buds are a red flag.
  • Ask about the source. Clone-derived Kosher Kush is more consistent than seed-grown versions, which vary more by phenotype.

Growing Kosher Kush

Kosher Kush grows like an OG: it stretches, it eats, and it rewards training. Cannigma calls it easy to start but challenging to master.

  • Flowering: 9–10 weeks per the breeder; SeedFinder logs about 67 days, and some listings say 56–63 days. Growers on SeedFinder recommend at least 70 days.
  • Yield: 450–550 g/m² indoors per the breeder; outdoor estimates around 16 oz (about 450 g) per plant.
  • Height: stretches significantly in early flower; outdoor plants can pass 2 m. Top early and use SCROG or LST.
  • Feeding: handles moderate to heavy nutrients.
  • Resilience: good resistance to mold, mildew and pests per Cannigma and AskGrowers; prefers warm, dry conditions. Keep flowering humidity around 40–50%.
  • Outdoors: harvest around early to mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Seeds: feminized seeds from DNA Genetics / Reserva Privada.

How long does Kosher Kush take to flower?

About 9–10 weeks indoors per the breeder, with outdoor harvests around early to mid-October. It stretches, so top or train it early.
