Black Ice Strain: The Sleepy Super-Indica
The Black Ice strain is an indica-dominant hybrid bred by Moon Seeds from two old-school heavyweights: Black Domina, Sensi Seeds' Afghan-heavy indica, and White Widow, the frosty Dutch classic. It smells of menthol, wood and black pepper, hits with a short euphoric lift, then pulls the body down into the kind of relaxation Leafly calls "a reliable sedative." It's a night strain, through and through — the same heavy-evening corner of our THCA flower collection where indica-leaning hybrids live.
It's also a name with more than one plant behind it. Most databases agree on Black Domina × White Widow, but one widely read guide lists Black Domina × ICE instead, and a Michigan grower sells a completely different Black Ice bred from MAC #1 and OOOZE. Below: the lineage and where the confusion comes from, the terpene profile, how the high unfolds, how strong it really is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to tell a good bag.
A 360° look at Black Ice's dark, frosty, purple-tinged buds.

Black Ice Strain Genetics & Lineage
- Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. SeedFinder lists it 90% indica; grow guides such as Vivosun call it about 70/30. Either way, the effects read indica.
- Ancestry: Black Domina × White Widow, per Leafly, SeedFinder, GreenState and most dispensary menus.
- Breeder: Moon Seeds, credited on Leafly and SeedFinder. Moon Seeds sells it as a feminized seed.
- THC: SeedFinder's breeder data lists 19%; Leafly lists 25%; Vivosun 24–28%; JointCommerce cites dispensary labs at 18–24%, with outliers to 25–26%.
- CBD: Negligible — SeedFinder lists 0.3%, most others under 1%. Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
- Aliases: Leafly lists "Bli." Some menus write it "Black.Ice."
The parents: Black Domina and White Widow
Black Domina is a Sensi Seeds indica built from four classic Afghan-line genetics — Afghani, Ortega, Northern Lights and Hash Plant. SeedFinder lists it at 95% indica with a flowering time around 50 days. It's where Black Ice gets its dense structure, dark coloring, fast finish and sedative weight.
White Widow is the 1990s Dutch hybrid famous for its blanket of white trichomes. It adds resin, a little head-high euphoria and a peppery, musky spice. Moon Seeds' own description of the cross: a "productive Black Domina with a beastly White Widow" resulting in "a brutal super-indica, both in production and in fragrances."
Which Black Ice is which? The lineage conflicts
- Black Domina × White Widow (Moon Seeds): the version on Leafly and SeedFinder and the one this page describes.
- Black Domina × ICE: JointCommerce lists the second parent as ICE (Indica Crystal Extreme, from Nirvana Seeds) and says breeding credits for Black Ice "can be hazy." We found no breeder source backing that version.
- MAC #1 × OOOZE: Glacier Cannabis in Michigan grows a different cultivar under the same name — caryophyllene and limonene with black pepper, orange, bergamot and sage notes, and a mellow, non-sedating buzz. Different genetics, different high.
Black Ice also turns up as pre-rolls, vape cartridges (including a CBN-boosted "Black Ice" cart) and THCA flower, and many of those products don't list a lineage at all. If the parentage matters to you, ask the seller.
Black Ice Terpene Profile
Leafly lists caryophyllene as Black Ice's dominant terpene, followed by limonene and myrcene. Other sources reorder the top three — JointCommerce puts myrcene first at roughly 0.4–0.6% by weight, with caryophyllene at 0.2–0.4% and limonene at 0.15–0.3% — and add humulene, linalool and pinene in smaller amounts. All agree on the shape: pepper and earth up front, a little citrus, and a sedative base.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — black pepper, wood, the spicy backbone
Myrcene — earthy, musky, sedative body
Limonene — faint citrus-berry lift
Humulene — dry, woody, hoppy
Typical relative profile for Black Ice — caryophyllene-led per Leafly; some lab-based guides put myrcene first. Batches vary.
- Caryophyllene: The black-pepper and woody backbone, likely inherited from White Widow's spice. It's the only common terpene known to bind directly to CB2 receptors.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky, the classic Afghan-indica terpene from the Black Domina side and a big reason Black Ice reads heavy.
- Limonene: A light citrus-berry top note and part of the brief euphoric lift before the body takes over.
- Humulene and linalool: Secondary terpenes that add dry wood and a soft floral edge.
The "ice" in the flavor — the menthol coolness Leafly's users keep describing — isn't a single terpene. It's the overall blend of pepper, pine and earth reading cool on the palate.
Appearance
Black Ice usually looks the part. Leafly reviewers describe deep green buds with purple overtones, red-orange hairs and a frosty, kiefy coat. JointCommerce notes tight, golf-ball to egg-shaped buds with a high calyx-to-leaf ratio, and late-flower color that can shift from deep green toward violet or near-black when night temperatures drop. Not every cut gets that dark — GreenState describes larger, less dense, mint-green buds with bright orange hairs — so expect variation by grower.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar and the first hit is earthy and spicy: black pepper, musk and damp wood, with a cool, almost menthol edge. Leafly's top flavor tags are menthol, woody and pepper. Break a bud and a dark-berry sweetness comes forward — Moon Seeds' own notes mention "scents of candys and toffee sweets" and a "fruity and fresh taste." The inhale is sweet berry and pine; the exhale is pepper, wood and a resinous, slightly hashy finish. Some menus add citrus, vanilla or diesel notes, which likely reflects different growers' cuts.
Recreational Effects
Black Ice is a body strain. On Leafly, from 138 reviews averaging 4.1 out of 5, the top-reported effects are:
- Sleepy: the headline effect — reviewers call it a knockout.
- Relaxed: deep muscle calm that builds into couch-lock with more hits.
- Tingly: a warm body buzz in the first half hour.
- Euphoric: a short mood lift before the heaviness lands.
- Hungry: expect the munchies.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a quick, quiet head change and the start of body relaxation.
- 30–60 minutes: the peak — heavy limbs, a calm, less busy mind, mild euphoria.
- 2–4 hours: a long, slow fade, often straight into sleep.
Those timings come from JointCommerce's guide and match what Leafly reviewers describe. One outlier: GreenState calls Black Ice "light and airy" and even-keel — possibly a different cut, or a different Black Ice altogether.

How Strong Is Black Ice? What Makes It Special?
Black Ice is strong for a classic indica, but not record-breaking. The published numbers vary widely:
- SeedFinder (breeder data): 19% THC.
- JointCommerce: 18–24% in dispensary labs, with occasional 25–26% outliers.
- Leafly: 25%.
- Vivosun: 24–28%.
What makes it special isn't a single potency number — it's the combination. Black Domina gives it a fast finish, dense, dark buds and heavy sedation; White Widow gives it resin and a peppery spice. Leafly's reviewers keep coming back to the same point: it's a "heavy hitting Indica," a "knockout punch," and "rookies take it easy." Is it the most powerful strain in the world? No — plenty of modern strains test in the 30s, and potency varies more by grower and batch than by name. But for an old-school indica, Black Ice punches above its THC number because of how heavy it feels.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Black Ice batch against the 19–28% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Black Ice vs Similar Strains
- vs White Widow: the frosty parent. White Widow is more balanced and heady; Black Ice is far heavier and sleepier.
- vs Northern Lights and Afghan Kush: both sit in Black Domina's Afghan family tree. Same sedative, earthy core; Black Ice adds White Widow's pepper and resin.
- vs Bubba Kush and Master Kush: fellow classic nighttime indicas. Bubba is sweeter and more hash-and-chocolate; Black Ice is spicier and cooler.
- vs MAC #1: one parent of the other Black Ice. If your Black Ice smells of orange and bergamot and doesn't knock you out, it may be the MAC × OOOZE version.
- vs Permanent Marker: a modern indica-leaning hybrid, also caryophyllene-led, with a fast head and a heavy body finish — but a louder chemical-marker and candy nose. It's the closest match on our shelf.
Who Black Ice Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced smokers looking for an evening or bedtime strain; anyone who likes earthy, peppery, old-school indica flavor; people who want their body to switch off after a long day.
Poor fit: daytime use, work, anything that needs focus — and beginners, who should start very small. If you want something lighter and more social, the fruit-forward Super Boof is the more balanced option on our shelf.
How to Use Black Ice THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the pepper and menthol before the earth takes over. Around 350–370°F keeps the flavor and a lighter body; 390–410°F brings out the full sedative weight.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15 minutes — this strain is heavier than its THC number suggests. Regular users usually find two or three hits is plenty, ideally an hour or so before bed. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Stress: about 30% of Leafly reviewers.
- Anxiety: about 30% — the calm, quiet headspace is the draw.
- Insomnia: about 29%, and the most common theme in written reviews.
- Pain and muscle tension: frequently mentioned in reviews and in Leafly's own description.
- Low appetite: "hungry" is one of its top effects.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints.
- Dizziness — Leafly's third most-reported negative, especially standing up fast after a heavy session.
- Heavy sedation and couch-lock — great at bedtime, a problem if you have plans.
- Paranoia — less common with this profile, but possible at high doses or low tolerance.
Don't drive or operate anything after using it, and don't mix it with alcohol or sleep medication. Talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Black Ice Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask about the lineage. Black Domina × White Widow and MAC #1 × OOOZE are different plants. A good seller knows which one they have.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Pepper, wood and a cool finish. A real Domina × Widow Black Ice is spicy and earthy, not candy-sweet or citrus-loud.
- Dense, frosty buds, ideally dark green with purple flashes and trichomes coating the inside of the bud when you break it.
- A proper cure — a hay or grass smell means it was rushed.
Growing Black Ice
Black Ice is one of the more forgiving indicas to grow. Vivosun rates it moderately easy, and Leafly notes a high yield.
- Flowering: 55–60 days per the breeder's SeedFinder listing; grow guides say 8–9 weeks, and one says up to 12.
- Yield: about 400–500 g/m² indoors and up to 600 g per plant outdoors, per Vivosun.
- Height: short to medium — roughly 80–140 cm indoors. It takes well to topping, LST and SCROG.
- Color: dropping night temperatures a few degrees in the last two to three weeks brings out the dark purple tones.
- Outdoors: harvest late September to early October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Seeds: Moon Seeds sells it feminized.
Is Black Ice THCA Flower Legal?
Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is federally legal when it contains no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry-weight basis — see the USDA hemp program. THCA flower is sold under that rule. State laws differ and are changing, so check your state before you order. And whatever the label says, THCA flower will show up on a drug test — heated, it is THC.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Black Ice indica or sativa?
Black Ice is an indica-dominant hybrid — SeedFinder lists it 90% indica, while grow guides such as Vivosun say about 70/30. Its effects are clearly indica: sleepy, relaxed and heavy-bodied.
Is Black Ice strong?
Yes, for a classic indica. Published THC ranges from 19% (SeedFinder) to 25% (Leafly) and 24–28% (Vivosun), and reviewers describe it as a knockout punch. It feels heavier than its THC number suggests, so start small.
What is so special about Black Ice?
It combines Black Domina's dense, dark, fast-finishing Afghan indica genetics with White Widow's resin and peppery spice — giving a cool menthol-pepper flavor and a reliably sedating, sleepy high.
What is Black Ice a cross of?

Who breeds Black Ice?
Moon Seeds, per Leafly and SeedFinder. The Michigan Black Ice (MAC #1 × OOOZE) comes from Glacier Cannabis and is a different cultivar.
What does Black Ice taste like?
Leafly's top flavors are menthol, woody and pepper. Expect black pepper and damp earth up front, a dark-berry sweetness on the inhale and a peppery, resinous finish.
