Black Mamba Strain: Grape, Purple and a Fast Bite
The Black Mamba strain is a dark, grape-heavy indica named after the African snake — and like the snake, its reputation is that it strikes fast. The version most people mean is usually traced to Granddaddy Purple × Black Domina: purple-to-almost-black buds, sweet grape and berry on the nose with pine and skunk behind it, and a quick euphoric lift that slides into heavy, sleepy body calm. It belongs in the same evening neighborhood as Grape Ape and Purple Punch, and in our THCA flower collection it lines up with the heavy, indica-leaning jars.
It's also one of the most tangled names in cannabis. Leafly says the breeder is unknown, AllBud lists different parents, and at least two breeders sell completely different plants called Black Mamba — one a 50/50 cookies cross, one a landrace sativa. Below: every documented version and who says what, how it tastes, how the high unfolds, how strong it really is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Black Mamba's frosty buds.
Quick Facts
In short: An indica most often traced to Granddaddy Purple × Black Domina — sweet grape and berry over pine and skunk, dark purple-to-black buds, and a fast euphoric bite that settles into heavy, sleepy body calm. Several unrelated plants share the name.

- Aliases: Black Mamba #6, Bmb
- THC: Leafly lists 19%; AllBud 20%; most menus 18–25%; one GreenState-reviewed batch tested 27%
- Dominant terpene: Limonene per Leafly lab data, with pinene and caryophyllene; many menus list myrcene first

Black Mamba Strain Genetics & Lineage
- Type: Indica-dominant. Leafly lists it as an indica; AllBud, Zen Leaf and Leafwell put it at about 70% indica, 30% sativa.
- Ancestry (most common): Granddaddy Purple × Black Domina. Leafly, Zen Leaf, Leafwell and Vivosun all list this cross, though Leafly words it as "thought to be."
- Ancestry (AllBud): Blue Bubblejuice × Domina, carrying Blueberry and Northern Lights genetics. Some dispensary pages repeat this as "Blue Bubblejuice × unknown indica."
- Breeder: Unknown for the classic cut, per Leafly. Pacific Seed Bank credits Amsterdam Seeds Co. for its GDP × Black Domina seeds; a Leafly-listed clone nursery credits Exotic Genetix for the same cross.
- THC: Leafly 19%; AllBud 20%; Leafwell 18–22%; most dispensary pages 18–25%.
- CBD: Usually under 1%. Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
- Aliases: Black Mamba #6 and the shorthand Bmb.
Five plants, one name: which Black Mamba is which?
A GreenState review counts five different Black Mambas on the market. Here's what each source documents:
- Granddaddy Purple × Black Domina: the classic, grape-forward indica and the one most strain pages describe. Denver's Westword calls it the oldest and most traditional cut.
- Blue Bubblejuice × Domina: AllBud's listing — berry-forward and indica-leaning, close enough in profile that menus often blur the two.
- Exotic Genetix — Mint Chocolate Chip × The Cube: a 50/50 hybrid per SeedFinder's breeder listing, with chocolate-and-mint aromas, a 56–63 day flower and 22–26% THC. The breeder's line: "This snake in the grass is a beautifully dark plant." Westword says this cookies-family cut feels more psychedelic and usually tests higher.
- SnowHigh Seeds — Vietnam Black × Black Congolese: a mostly-sativa landrace cross with a 13–14 week flower and "very potent trippy qualities," per SeedFinder. A completely different plant from the indica.
- Critical Mass × Skunk: named by GreenState and Westword (which calls it the least popular cut); no breeder is documented.
There's one more wrinkle: a nursery listing on Leafly credits Exotic Genetix with the GDP × Black Domina cross, while SeedFinder credits Exotic with Mint Chocolate Chip × The Cube. We can't reconcile that from public records, so if the cut matters to you, ask the seller which one it is. The rest of this page describes the classic grape indica unless noted.
Black Mamba Terpene Profile
The sources split here too. Leafly's lab data puts limonene first, followed by pinene and caryophyllene — even though Leafly's own description names myrcene as dominant. Seed banks, grow guides and dispensary pages mostly list myrcene, caryophyllene and pinene. The likely answer is that different Black Mamba cuts, and different batches, lead with different terpenes. Caryophyllene is worth knowing either way: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy grape, heavy body
Limonene — sweet citrus-berry lift
Pinene — pine on the back of the nose
Caryophyllene — pepper, skunk, spice
Estimated relative profile blending Leafly lab data (limonene-led) with seed-bank and dispensary listings (myrcene-led). Sleepier batches usually run myrcene-heavy.
- Myrcene: Earthy, musky and fruity — it tracks with the grape note and the heavy, sleepy finish most reviewers describe.
- Limonene: Leafly's lead terpene for Black Mamba; the bright, sweet edge and part of the fast euphoric onset.
- Pinene: The pine that Zen Leaf says "becomes more apparent" when you sniff closely.
- Caryophyllene: Peppery and spicy — it's behind the "spicier, grainier finish" Westword noticed compared with Grape Ape.
The grape itself isn't one terpene. It's the overall Granddaddy Purple-side chemistry, and it's much quieter in the Exotic Genetix cut, which reads chocolate and mint instead.
Appearance
Black Mamba earns the name visually. The classic cut grows dense, sharply pointed, arrow-shaped buds in deep forest green with heavy purple shading — dark enough that Leafwell says they can look black rather than purple. Auburn to orange pistils show up near harvest, and a frosty trichome coat makes the buds sticky enough that Zen Leaf recommends a grinder. Westword compared a Denver batch to "giant Spree candies": plump, purple and milky with resin. The purple comes from anthocyanin pigments and gets deeper when plants see cool night temperatures late in flower. GreenState's Washington sample was greener — deep green, tight buds with purple-tipped leaves — which is a reminder that color varies by cut and grower.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar of the grape cut and the first hit is sweet, sour grape and berry — Zen Leaf calls the fragrance "almost perfume-like." Sniff closer and pine comes through, then skunk and a little earth. Breaking a bud releases a more herbal smell. On the inhale it's sweet grape and berry; the exhale is where the grape is strongest, with plum, violet and a peppery, woody finish. Leafly's users tag it plum, grape and violet; AllBud's list is berry, fruity, pine, sweet and woody. Westword describes "grape Kool-Aid" with floral, earthy notes and a syrupy finish. GreenState's tester got tart fresh grape over sweet cedarwood. The Exotic Genetix cut is the outlier: its breeder describes chocolate and mint, not grape.
Recreational Effects
Every source agrees on the headline: Black Mamba "strikes" fast. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.6 rating from 315 reviews, the most-reported effects are:
- Sleepy: the top-reported effect, especially as the session goes on.
- Relaxed: a heavy, full-body calm that AllBud calls "powerful but not overwhelming."
- Hungry: the munchies are a near-certainty.
- Euphoric and happy: the first-hour mood lift that reviewers mention before the body takes over.
Not every batch is a knockout. One Leafly reviewer wrote it was "not exactly the super heavy sleepy indica I was expecting," and Leafwell describes an energizing, mind-racing start. That early "up" phase is real; it just doesn't last.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a quick head change, often felt as pressure in the forehead or temples, with a rush of euphoria. Some people get chatty and a little racy here.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak. Westword describes about an hour of "bliss and wanderlust" while the body grows heavier.
- 1–3 hours: deep body relaxation, munchies, and — for most people — sleep. Vivosun puts total duration at 2–4 hours.
The arc is fast up, slow down. Plan to stay put once you've started.

How Strong Is the Black Mamba Strain?
Black Mamba is solidly potent, but it isn't a record-breaker. The numbers by source:
- Leafly: 19% THC, about 1% CBG.
- AllBud: 20% (one Oregon reviewer reported a 24% batch).
- Leafwell: 18–22%.
- Seed banks and grow guides: 20–26%; Exotic Genetix lists 22–26% for its cut.
- GreenState: the Washington batch it reviewed tested 27%.
The strength people talk about is mostly speed. It comes on in minutes and the body effect builds quickly, which is why it feels stronger than its average THC suggests. Is it the world's strongest strain? No — no single strain holds that title, because potency varies more by grower and batch than by name, and plenty of modern strains test above 30%. Black Mamba sits in the upper-middle of today's range, with the Exotic Genetix cut usually testing higher than the classic grape indica.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Black Mamba batch against the 19–27% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Black Mamba vs Similar Strains
- vs Granddaddy Purple: the grape parent. GDP is the softer, more classic purple; Black Mamba hits faster and carries more pine and skunk.
- vs Grape Ape: the strain Westword compares it to. Similar grape candy, but Black Mamba has a spicier, grainier finish.
- vs Purple Punch and Purple Urkle: fellow purple, grape-and-berry evening strains. Purple Punch is sweeter and more dessert-like; Purple Urkle is earthier.
- vs Banana Kush and Biscotti: indicas that NJ dispensary The Library suggests to Black Mamba fans when it's out of stock.
- vs Mule Fuel: a different flavor world — gas and earth instead of grape — but the same heavy, indica-leaning wind-down. It's our closest match on effect, not on flavor.
Who Black Mamba Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced consumers who want a fast-acting evening strain; nights in, movies, a big meal; fans of grape and purple strains.
Poor fit: beginners, anyone who needs to get things done afterward, or people prone to THC anxiety — "anxious" is one of Leafly's top-reported negatives. For a lighter, fruit-forward evening option, Super Boof is the softer pick on our shelf.
How to Use Black Mamba THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: a good way to taste the grape before the body settles in. Around 350–380°F keeps the fruit and limonene up front; 390–410°F brings out the heavier, sleepier side.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — it hits fast and keeps building. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc, all the way to sleep. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (about 27%) — though "anxious" also shows up among its negatives, so dose matters.
- Stress: about 26% of reviewers.
- Insomnia: about 24%, consistent with "sleepy" as the top-reported effect.
- Appetite and body aches: dispensary and review sites frequently mention the munchies and a heavy, physical calm.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly.
- Anxiety or racing thoughts — mostly in the fast first phase, and mostly at high doses or low tolerance.
- Dizziness and grogginess — reported by Zen Leaf and others, usually from taking too much too fast.
Is Black Mamba good for sleep? For most people, yes — it's one of its main uses. Just know the first half hour can be lively before it turns sedating. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Black Mamba Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask which Black Mamba it is. GDP × Black Domina, Blue Bubblejuice × Domina, or the Exotic Genetix cookies cut taste and feel very different. A good seller knows.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Claims far above the 20s without paperwork are marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Grape you can smell through the jar. The classic cut is loud grape and berry; a flat, hay-like smell means a poor cure.
- Dark color with real frost. Purple is nice, but trichome coverage matters more than color — dyed-looking or dull buds are a warning sign.
- Dense, sticky buds that need a grinder, not crumbly, over-dried flower.
Growing Black Mamba
Grow data depends heavily on which Black Mamba you have, so check the seed pack or ask the clone source. For the classic GDP × Black Domina indica:
- Flowering: about 7–9 weeks indoors (AllBud 7–8; Vivosun and the Clone Foundry listing 8–9). A Westword grower said the classic cut finishes in no more than eight weeks.
- Yield: roughly 400–450 g/m² indoors and up to 500–600 g per plant outdoors, per Vivosun.
- Height: medium and bushy; prune and top for an even canopy.
- Difficulty: moderate. Pacific Seed Bank notes it's sensitive to nutrient buildup — start feeds at half strength.
- Color: cooler late-flower nights bring out the purple.
- Outdoors: harvest early to mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Other cuts: the Exotic Genetix version flowers in 56–63 days and yields heavy; the SnowHigh sativa needs 13–14 weeks and grows very tall — that's likely where the 13–14 week figure on some pages comes from.
Is Black Mamba THCA Flower Legal?
Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is federally legal when it contains no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry-weight basis — see the USDA hemp program. THCA flower is sold under that rule. State laws differ and are changing, so check your state before you order. And whatever the label says, THCA flower will show up on a drug test — heated, it is THC.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Black Mamba indica or sativa?
The classic Black Mamba is an indica — Leafly lists it as one, and AllBud, Zen Leaf and Leafwell put it at about 70% indica. The exception is SnowHigh Seeds' Black Mamba, an unrelated, mostly-sativa landrace cross.
What is Black Mamba a cross of?
Most sources say Granddaddy Purple × Black Domina, though Leafly calls that 'thought to be' and lists the breeder as unknown. AllBud lists Blue Bubblejuice × Domina, and Exotic Genetix sells a different Black Mamba bred from Mint Chocolate Chip × The Cube.
What is the Black Mamba strain on Leafly?
Leafly lists Black Mamba (also known as Black Mamba #6) as an indica at 19% THC and 1% CBG, likely Granddaddy Purple × Black Domina, with a limonene-led terpene profile, grape, plum and violet flavors, and sleepy, relaxed, hungry effects. It has a 4.6 rating from 315 reviews.
What does Black Mamba taste like?
Sweet grape and berry, strongest on the exhale, with plum, violet, pine and a peppery, skunky finish. Westword compared it to grape Kool-Aid with a spicier finish than Grape Ape.
How strong is Black Mamba?
Leafly lists 19% THC and AllBud 20%; most menus show 18–25%, and one batch reviewed by GreenState tested 27%. It feels stronger than those numbers because it hits so fast.
What is the world's strongest strain?
No single strain holds that title — potency varies more by grower and batch than by name, and many modern strains now test above 30%. Black Mamba is potent and fast-acting, but it isn't a potency-record strain.
What are the effects of Black Mamba?
A fast euphoric lift in the first few minutes, then heavy body relaxation, munchies and sleepiness. Leafly's top-reported effects are sleepy, relaxed and hungry.
Is Black Mamba good for sleep?
Usually, yes. About 24% of Leafly reviewers cite insomnia, and 'sleepy' is its top-reported effect. The first half hour can feel lively before it turns sedating.
Is Black Mamba good for anxiety?
It's mixed. About 27% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but 'anxious' is also one of its top-reported negatives, usually at higher doses. Start low.
Why is Black Mamba purple?
Anthocyanin pigments, inherited largely from the Granddaddy Purple side. Cool night temperatures late in flower deepen the color until the buds can look almost black.
How long does Black Mamba take to flower?
The classic indica cut takes about 7–9 weeks indoors, with outdoor harvests in early to mid-October. Exotic Genetix's version takes 56–63 days; SnowHigh's sativa needs 13–14 weeks.
Is Black Mamba good for beginners?
Not really — it hits fast and keeps building. If you try it, take one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes before taking more.
Where can I buy Black Mamba THCA flower online?
Black Mamba isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. The closest match on effect is Mule Fuel THCA Flower — a heavy, indica-leaning GMO Cookies × Lurch with earthy diesel, pepper, citrus and pine, ½oz $65, third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75.
