Cherry Bomb Strain

Cherry Bomb Strain: The Fruity Daytime Hybrid With Several Pedigrees

The Cherry Bomb strain is a fast-hitting, fruit-forward hybrid known for sweet cherry and berry flavor and an energetic, focused high that settles into calm. Leafly calls it "a great strain for daytime consumption," lists it at 18% THC and pinene-dominant, and its reviewers most often report feeling focused, energetic and happy. It fits the fruity, daytime corner of our THCA flower collection.

Here's the catch most strain pages skip: "Cherry Bomb" isn't one plant. SeedFinder lists around six strains by that name. The oldest traces back to a 1970s Hawaiian selection by the late breeder Mr. Greengenes; others come from Bomb Seeds, Barney's Farm and, since 2022, B-Real's Insane brand. Below: which Cherry Bomb is which, what each one tastes like, how strong it really is, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

Cherry Bomb Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Hybrid. Leafly describes mostly energizing effects; AllBud lists it 50/50 but says its "sativa-dominant properties are easily recognizable"; SeedFinder lists the Bomb Seeds version as mostly indica.
  • Ancestry: Depends on the breeder (below). Leafly's genetics chart shows Hawaiian × North American Indica; Weedmaps lists Maui Wowie × Hawaiian.
  • THC: Leafly 18%; AllBud 17–24% (its own description says 17–22%); Bomb Seeds 17–22%.
  • CBD: Leafly lists 0%. Effectively a THC-dominant strain.
  • Aliases: CB on Leafly. Breeder-specific listings include Cherry Bomb #2 and Cherry Bomb Auto.
  • Offspring: Leafly lists Cherry Haze and Dragon Berry as descendants.

Which Cherry Bomb is which?

Sources genuinely disagree, so here's each claim with who makes it:

  • The Hawaiian original (Mr. Greengenes): In a 2011 grower-forum post, Mr. Greengenes said his Cherry Bomb was a Maui Wowie selection he named in 1977. Swami Organic Seed, which says it repopulated the line from his seeds with permission, writes on SeedFinder that it descends from the 1979 Maui Wowie line of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love and that Greengenes selected it "for potency and metallic cherry taste." (Swami's own listing names the parents as Afghani × Oaxacan.) This is the line AllBud calls "Hawaiian Cherry Bomb Sativa."
  • Cherry Bomb #2 (Reeferman): According to Greengenes, Reeferman Seeds crossed his seeds with a separate "Cherry Bomb Indica" and sold the F1s. AllBud's "California Cherry Bomb Indica" belongs to this family. Swami calls the Reeferman and Bomb Seeds versions imposters of the original.
  • Barney's Farm: Leafly and Weedmaps credit Barney's Farm with a popular variant — a California indica, likely with some Skunk in it, crossed with a Hawaiian sativa. We couldn't find a current Barney's listing to confirm it.
  • Bomb Seeds: Per the breeder on SeedFinder, Big Bomb (Big Bud × Bomb) crossed with "a unique and fruity mother" that isn't named. Mostly indica, 17–22% THC. This is the version most seed shops sell today.
  • Insane (B-Real), 2022: Per Leafly, the Cypress Hill rapper's brand released a different Cherry Bomb — Zkittlez × Cherry Pie. Modern dessert genetics, unrelated to the Hawaiian line.

Other names float around. Weedmaps says the often-repeated Cherry AK-47 parentage "is not established," and a Canadian brand sells a Cherry Bomb bred from Mama's Chili Bomb × Headspace. Bottom line: when you see Cherry Bomb on a menu, ask whose it is.

Cherry Bomb Terpene Profile

Leafly lists pinene as Cherry Bomb's dominant terpene, followed by myrcene and limonene. Long-form guides add caryophyllene and linalool, and some sativa-leaning cuts show terpinolene. A pinene lead is unusual for a fruit strain and helps explain why Cherry Bomb reads alert rather than sleepy.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Pinene — pine, alert and clear-headed

Myrcene — earthy, herbal, the calm landing

Limonene — citrus brightness under the cherry

Caryophyllene — peppery, woody finish

Typical relative profile for Cherry Bomb — pinene-led per Leafly. Expect variation between breeders' versions; the Bomb Seeds cut can read heavier and more myrcene-forward.

  • Pinene: Fresh pine and the clear, focused edge that makes Cherry Bomb a to-do-list strain.
  • Myrcene: Earthy and herbal; it's behind the body calm the high settles into after the first hour.
  • Limonene: A citrus lift that brightens the fruit and the mood.
  • Caryophyllene: A peppery, woody note on the exhale and the backbone on heavier cuts.

The cherry itself isn't one terpene — it's the whole chemistry of the plant, and it ranges from "metallic cherry" on the Hawaiian line to "summer fruits with classic skunk undertones" on the Bomb Seeds version.

Appearance

AllBud describes light green buds that look modest but carry heavy trichome coverage. Expect medium, fairly dense nugs threaded with orange pistils and a good coat of frost. Bomb Seeds' version is chunkier — its Big Bud side builds heavy flowers — and per Weedmaps its leaves can turn purple or cherry-red late in bloom. The Hawaiian-leaning line grows taller and more spear-shaped, the way sativas do.

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar and you get sweet fruit first: cherry and red berry, with a musky edge Leafly describes as "musky, berry." Leafly's top flavor tags are tree fruit, chestnut and berry; AllBud's are berry, sweet and woody. Bomb Seeds describes a "distinct cherry taste" — summer fruits with a skunky undertone — while the Hawaiian line is known for a sharper, metallic cherry. Leafly's reviewers sum up the smoke as "sweet, tangy, with a little kick," though Leafly also notes the flavor is milder than the nose suggests.

Recreational Effects

Cherry Bomb comes on quickly, often with a strong buzz. On Leafly, with 200-plus ratings, the most-reported effects are:

  • Focused: the headline effect — Leafly says it settles into a state suited to "to-do lists or creative projects."
  • Energetic: active and mentally alert early on, which Leafly says can border on "antsy."
  • Happy: a steady mood lift without heavy sedation.
  • Relaxed: AllBud and the Bomb Seeds breeder both describe the high moving from cerebral to a calming body feel.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5 minutes: a fast head change — this isn't a slow creeper.
  • 15–60 minutes: the active peak. Alert, chatty, focused; some Leafly reviewers describe a racy stretch of about two hours.
  • 1–3 hours: a gradual settle into relaxed calm. In the evening some reviewers report it turning sleepy.

AllBud says it leaves no hangover. Leafly lists the high as mild to moderate, but several of its reviewers say it hits hard even with a high tolerance, so don't skip the waiting.

How Strong Is Cherry Bomb?

Moderate to strong, depending on whose Cherry Bomb you get. The published numbers:

  • Leafly: 18% THC, 0% CBD — "higher THC than average" by its scale.
  • AllBud: 17–24%.
  • Bomb Seeds (breeder): 17–22%.
  • Modern brand cuts: some newer products sold as Cherry Bomb list higher numbers, but they're often different genetics entirely.

So Cherry Bomb isn't a 30%-club strain — and it doesn't need to be. Its kick comes from the fast, alert onset, which is why Leafly reviewers call it strong even at average THC. If you're comparing batches, potency varies more between growers than between names.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Cherry Bomb against the 17–24% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Cherry Bomb vs Similar Strains

  • vs Maui Wowie: the Hawaiian sativa the original Cherry Bomb was selected from. Maui Wowie is more tropical and pineapple; Cherry Bomb brings the cherry and a calmer finish.
  • vs Cherry Pie: Granddaddy Purple × Durban Poison — darker, jammier and more relaxing. It's also a parent of Insane's Cherry Bomb.
  • vs Cherry Runtz and Cherry Punch: modern candy-cherry strains — sweeter and more dessert-like, with a heavier body.
  • vs Cherry Diesel: cherry over fuel, with a sharper, more energetic sativa edge.
  • vs Strawberry Glue: berry instead of cherry, with Gorilla Glue's gas underneath — the same sweet-fruit-first, euphoric, functional lean. It's the closest match on our shelf; we don't stock a cherry strain right now.

Who Cherry Bomb Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: daytime smokers who want fruit flavor without couch-lock; errands, chores, creative projects and social sessions.

Poor fit: anyone prone to THC jitters — its alert start is exactly what can tip into anxious — or someone looking for a dedicated sleep strain. For a gentler fruit option, Strawberry 2.1 is the lighter pick on our shelf.

How to Use Cherry Bomb THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the cherry. Around 350–375°F keeps the fruit and pinene brightness; 390°F and up brings out the woody, earthy base.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — Cherry Bomb's fast, racy onset is easy to overshoot. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report, not established clinical outcomes — there are no clinical studies on Cherry Bomb specifically. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: the most-cited reason on Leafly (29% of reviewers).
  • Anxiety: 25% report help — but "anxious" is also one of its top negatives, so low doses matter.
  • Pain: 23% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud users also mention aches and arthritis.
  • Low energy and focus: the alert, pinene-led high makes it a daytime pick for many.

For a plain-language primer on how terpenes are thought to shape these effects, see Project CBD on terpenes. Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the top complaints. AllBud says they're "all that keeps this strain from being perfect."
  • Anxiety or restlessness — Leafly's third-most-reported negative, tied to the energetic onset.
  • Racing thoughts at high doses, especially for low-tolerance users.

Is Cherry Bomb good for sleep? Not by design — it's a daytime strain, though some people find the comedown relaxing late in the day. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Cherry Bomb Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask whose Cherry Bomb it is. A good seller knows if it's the Hawaiian line, Bomb Seeds, Insane's Zkittlez × Cherry Pie, or something else. "Just Cherry Bomb" tells you little.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Real cherry on the nose. If it smells like generic hay or plain earth, it's either a different cut or a poor cure.
  • Frost and density, with trichomes worked into the bud, not just dusted on top.
  • A proper cure — the buds should snap, not crumble or bend.

Growing Cherry Bomb

Grow details depend entirely on the version. The Bomb Seeds cut is the easiest to find and to grow:

  • Flowering: 8–10 weeks indoors per Bomb Seeds (SeedFinder lists about 68 days). Weedmaps lists 10–12 weeks for the Barney's Farm version; Swami lists 60–90 days for the Hawaiian line.
  • Yield: 600–650 g/m² indoors, per the breeder.
  • Height: medium, about 100–120 cm indoors. The Hawaiian line grows taller and stretchier.
  • Outdoors: harvest late September to early October in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Watch for: heavy colas that need support and good airflow to avoid bud rot.
  • Seeds: Bomb Seeds sells feminized and autoflower (Cherry Bomb Auto) versions; Swami Organic Seed sells the Hawaiian line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cherry Bomb indica or sativa?

Cherry Bomb is a hybrid, but the lean depends on the version. Leafly reports mostly energizing, focused effects; AllBud lists it 50/50 with sativa-like effects; the Bomb Seeds version is mostly indica. The original Hawaiian line is sativa-leaning.

What is Cherry Bomb a cross of?

It depends on the breeder. Leafly lists Hawaiian × North American Indica, Weedmaps lists Maui Wowie × Hawaiian, Bomb Seeds crosses Big Bomb with an unnamed fruity mother, and B-Real's Insane brand released a Zkittlez × Cherry Pie version in 2022.

Who bred the original Cherry Bomb?

The oldest line is credited to the late breeder Mr. Greengenes, who said it was a Maui Wowie selection he named in 1977. Swami Organic Seed says it repopulated that line from his seeds.

How strong is Cherry Bomb?

Moderate to strong. Leafly lists 18% THC, AllBud 17–24% and Bomb Seeds 17–22%. It hits fast, so many users find it stronger than the numbers suggest.

What are the effects of Cherry Bomb?

Leafly reviewers most often report feeling focused, energetic and happy. The high starts alert and active, then settles into a calmer, relaxed state.

What does Cherry Bomb taste like?

Sweet cherry and berry with tree-fruit, woody and sometimes skunky notes. Leafly reviewers describe it as sweet and tangy; the Hawaiian line is known for a metallic cherry note.

Is Cherry Bomb good for anxiety?

It's mixed. About 25% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but 'anxious' is also one of its top negatives because of its energetic onset. Low doses are the safer approach.

Is Cherry Bomb good for sleep?

Not usually. It's a daytime strain; some people find the comedown relaxing in the evening, but it isn't built to knock you out.

Is Cherry Bomb good for beginners?

With care. The THC is moderate, but the onset is fast and racy. Take one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes.

How long does Cherry Bomb take to flower?

About 8–10 weeks indoors for the Bomb Seeds version, with yields around 600–650 g/m² and outdoor harvest in late September to early October.
