Grape Soda Strain: Purple-Drink Sweetness on an OG Frame
The Grape Soda strain is a selected phenotype of Tahoe OG Kush, picked out by the Oregon breeder Taste Budz for one thing the rest of the OG family rarely has: a sweet, grape-candy top note. Under that soda-fountain nose sits a classic OG backbone — pine, pepper, citrus — and an idle, heavy-bodied high that the breeder pitches as "an excellent evening strain." It belongs in the same conversation as Grape Ape and Granddaddy Purple, but it gets there by a completely different route.
That route matters, because Grape Soda is a name that gets stretched. Some databases call it a pure Tahoe OG pheno; a Denver reviewer heard it might carry a "mystery" strain too; one grow guide calls it a 50/50 hybrid with vague parents. Below: what the breeder and the major databases actually say, the terpene profile, how the high unfolds, how strong it is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag — plus the closest options in our THCA flower collection.
A 360° look at Grape Soda's frosty buds.

- Type: Indica-leaning hybrid. AllBud and GrowDiaries list it 70% indica / 30% sativa; Leafly lists it simply as a hybrid; Vivosun's grow guide calls it balanced 50/50. The reported effects — relaxed, heavy-bodied, evening — read indica.
- Ancestry: A selection from Tahoe OG Kush. SeedFinder traces it to a fast-flowering Tahoe OG pheno, and Tahoe OG Kush to the Tahoe cut of OG Kush × SFV OG Kush.
- Breeder: Taste Budz (listed as Tastebudz Seeds or Tastebudz Genetics), credited by Leafly, SeedFinder and GrowDiaries. Westword describes Taste Budz as an Oregon grower.
- THC: Leafly lists 28%; AllBud 22%; JointCommerce 18–26% with standout batches near 27–29%; Vivosun 18–24%.
- CBD and minors: CBD is trace — about 1% at most. Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
- Alias: GPS (Leafly). Don't confuse it with Grape Soda OG, Black Cherry Soda, or Umami Seed Co's Grape Zoda — separate strains.
Pure Tahoe OG phenotype — or something more?
This is where the sources split. Leafly, SeedFinder and AllBud all describe Grape Soda as a phenotype of Tahoe OG Kush, full stop. A Westword strain review out of Denver repeats the Tahoe OG story but adds that it may have been crossed with an unidentified "mystery" strain. JointCommerce notes that much of the OG attribution rests on sensory evidence — the petrol-and-lemon-peel notes and OG stretch — rather than a published pedigree. Our read: the breeder-backed answer is a Tahoe OG Kush selection, and the grape is a phenotype trait that was hunted for, not borrowed from a grape parent like Purple Urkle.
Origin and reputation
Grape Soda surfaced on West Coast menus in the mid-to-late 2010s, with early buzz in the Pacific Northwest. Westword says it gained popularity in the Northwest after a successful 2017 competition run, and HeyAbby credits it with awards at HempCon 2017 — we couldn't verify an official winners list, so treat that as reported, not confirmed. By the time Westword reviewed it, several Colorado wholesale growers were running it.
Its genetics have also been passed on: Leafly lists Grape Juice and Golden Soda among its descendants, and Original Sensible Seeds sells an autoflowering Grape Soda Auto.
Grape Soda Terpene Profile
Leafly lists myrcene as Grape Soda's most abundant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and pinene. JointCommerce describes the same myrcene-forward shape, with limonene and a little linalool behind it and total terpenes commonly 1.5–3%. Caryophyllene is the interesting one: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy, sweet, heavy body
Caryophyllene — pepper and spice, the OG backbone
Pinene — pine, a clearer head
Limonene — citrus fizz on top of the grape
Typical relative profile for Grape Soda — myrcene-led per Leafly. Exact ratios vary by grower and cure.
- Myrcene: Earthy, musky and slightly fruity — the most common terpene in cannabis and the one most tied to Grape Soda's idle, heavy-bodied feel.
- Caryophyllene: Black pepper and spice; the OG side's backbone, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Pinene: Fresh pine from the Tahoe OG lineage, and part of why the first half hour stays reasonably clear.
- Limonene: The lemon-lime "fizz" over the grape — the citrus edge Leafly and AllBud both describe.
Where does the grape come from? Not from a single terpene. JointCommerce suggests the purple-soda illusion is a blend of myrcene, limonene and floral terpenes like linalool, plus trace esters — the same family of compounds that gives grape skins their smell. It's also fragile: a dry, rushed cure loses it first.
Appearance
Grape Soda looks like an OG with a purple streak. JointCommerce describes compact, resin-dense buds with a high calyx-to-leaf ratio, olive-green coloring that can take on violet tones, and orange pistils. Westword's Colorado sample showed violet streaks on pale, bamboo-colored buds with rusty pistils, in the bulbous OG shape. AllBud's growers report fluffier, forest-green nugs with orange hairs and amber trichomes. How purple it gets depends on the cut and on night temperatures late in flower — a 6–10°C night drop, per JointCommerce, pushes the violet.
Aroma and Flavor
The name promises grape soda, and a well-grown, well-cured jar delivers: sweet grape candy and fizzy purple drink up front, a citrus-rind edge, then OG pine, earth and a peppery finish as it burns. Leafly's breeder description calls it "a pungent citrus aroma with notable grape notes on the palate," and Leafly's reviewers list grape, lavender and citrus as the top flavors. AllBud adds berry, lemon and sweet, with reviewers reporting cherry, plum and pear.
It's not always that loud. Westword's reviewer found Colorado cuts muddy — faint grape, bitter florals and chocolate on the nose and a bland, creamy-vanilla flavor — and concluded "the flavor just hasn't translated to the mountains yet." The lesson: Grape Soda is a phenotype strain, and the grape depends heavily on the cut, the grower and the cure. Vaporizing at lower temperatures shows the grape and citrus most clearly; combustion leans into the pepper and wood.
Recreational Effects
Grape Soda's breeder calls it "strong and fast-acting," with "an idle, heavy-bodied sensation that frees you from worry." On Leafly the most-reported effects are:
- Relaxed: the headline effect — a heavy, unhurried body calm.
- Happy: a mellow mood lift rather than a racing head.
- Aroused: a less common but frequently reported effect on Leafly.
AllBud's reviewers describe a slightly different arc — euphoria and light focus first, sometimes with "a light pressure behind the eyes," then happy relaxation without a big energy drop. Heavier hands report couch-lock. Both pictures fit an OG-indica phenotype: clearer at a low dose, heavier the more you take.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 2–5 minutes: onset when smoked or vaped (JointCommerce) — a head change and pressure behind the eyes.
- 15–30 minutes: the peak — happy, relaxed, body-centric, with moderate mental clarity.
- About 1 hour on: the body takes over. Westword describes a predictable, mild lethargy after roughly an hour.
- 2–3 hours: typical total duration when inhaled; edibles run 4–8 hours.

How Strong Is Grape Soda?
Strong, but the number depends on who's measuring. The published figures:
- Leafly: 28% THC, about 1% CBG — "higher THC than average."
- AllBud: 22% THC, about 1% CBD; one reviewer posted about 26% THC with 2.6% terpenes.
- JointCommerce: 18–26% typical, standout phenotypes around 27–29%.
- Vivosun: 18–24%.
What makes Grape Soda feel strong isn't only THC. A myrcene-led OG profile hits the body hard, so 22% in Grape Soda can feel heavier than 28% in a bright, limonene-led sativa. The breeder's "fast-acting" description is the other warning: it arrives quickly, so pace yourself.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Grape Soda batch against the 18–28% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Grape Soda vs Similar Strains
- vs Tahoe OG Kush: the source plant. Tahoe OG leans lemon, pine and fuel; Grape Soda is the phenotype that kept the OG weight but swapped much of the fuel for grape.
- vs Grape Ape and Granddaddy Purple: the classic grape indicas (GDP descends from Purple Urkle). They're grapier and more purple; Grape Soda has more OG pepper and pine, and a citrus edge.
- vs Purple Punch: grape candy and blueberry muffin over a sleepy indica. Purple Punch is the more dessert-like; Grape Soda is drier and more OG.
- vs Grape Gas and Modified Grapes: grape over gas and garlic. Both are louder and funkier; Grape Soda is the cleaner, sweeter soda version.
- vs SFV OG: a grandparent on the Tahoe OG side — earthy, piney and more upbeat, with no grape.
Who Grape Soda Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: evening smokers who want a sweet, fruity jar without giving up OG body; anyone winding down after work; fans of grape strains who find Grape Ape too one-note.
Poor fit: daytime productivity, low-tolerance users (Leafly lists "paranoid" among its negatives), or anyone who wants a bright, social sativa. For a lighter, more daytime fruit profile, Straw Gua Mintz is the better pick on our shelf; for a heavy evening session, Permanent Marker is closer to Grape Soda's weight.
How to Use Grape Soda THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to actually taste the soda. Around 340–370°F keeps the grape and citrus bright; 390–410°F brings out the pepper and the heavier body. JointCommerce notes that going much past 410°F flattens the grape.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — it's fast-acting and the body effect builds over the first hour. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full relaxed arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 26% of reviewers) — though "paranoid" also shows up as a negative, so dose matters.
- Stress: about 24% of Leafly reviewers.
- Low mood: about 16% of Leafly reviewers, consistent with the happy, relaxed headline effects.
- Sleep and evening wind-down: the breeder pitches it as an evening strain, and Westword calls it a bedtime pick.
- Aches and appetite: AllBud lists pain, headaches and inflammation among consumer-reported uses, and its reviewers mention appetite.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly and in grow guides.
- Paranoia — listed among Leafly's negatives, mostly at higher doses or low tolerance.
- Lethargy and couch-lock — the body effect deepens after an hour; plan your evening around it.
- Disorientation — Westword notes a floating feeling that can throw low-tolerance users; some get short-term memory fuzziness at higher doses.
Don't drive after using it, and be careful combining it with alcohol or other sedatives. Talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
How to Judge a Good Bag of Grape Soda
- Smell for grape. A real, well-cured Grape Soda smells like grape candy and citrus over pine. If it's all earth and chocolate, it's either a weaker cut or a bad cure.
- Ask about the source. A good seller knows it's the Taste Budz Tahoe OG selection — not Grape Soda OG, Grape Zoda or a Black Cherry Soda cross.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Dense, resinous OG structure, violet streaks are a bonus, not a requirement.
- A proper cure. Grape top notes are the first thing a rushed or overdried cure destroys — growers on Reddit's r/microgrowery have posted long, multi-month cures of it for exactly that reason.
Growing Grape Soda
Grape Soda grows like an indica-leaning OG: bushy, manageable height, flexible branches and resin-heavy flowers.
- Flowering: about 7–9 weeks indoors — JointCommerce says many cuts finish between days 56 and 63; Vivosun says 8–9 weeks; HeyAbby 8–10. SeedFinder notes it came from a fast-flowering Tahoe OG pheno.
- Stretch: roughly 1.5–2× after the flip. Top early and trellis.
- Outdoors: harvest from late September to mid October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Color: cooler nights in late flower bring out the violet.
- Yield: no breeder figure is published; the major databases don't list one.
- Seeds: Tastebudz feminized seeds, plus an autoflower Grape Soda Auto from Original Sensible Seeds.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Grape Soda indica or sativa?
Grape Soda is an indica-leaning hybrid. AllBud and GrowDiaries list it 70% indica / 30% sativa, Leafly lists it as a hybrid, and its reported effects — relaxed, heavy-bodied, best in the evening — read indica.
What strain is Grape Soda from?
It's a selected phenotype of Tahoe OG Kush, picked by the breeder Taste Budz. Tahoe OG Kush is the Tahoe cut of OG Kush crossed with SFV OG Kush. One Denver review says it may also carry an unidentified 'mystery' strain.
What is another name for Grape Soda?
Leafly lists 'GPS' as an alias. It's a different strain from Grape Soda OG, Grape Zoda and the Black Cherry Soda family.
Who bred Grape Soda?
Taste Budz (also listed as Tastebudz Seeds or Tastebudz Genetics), which Westword describes as an Oregon grower.
How strong is Grape Soda?
Leafly lists 28% THC, AllBud 22%, and most guides 18–26%. It's described as fast-acting, and its myrcene-heavy OG profile can make it feel heavier than the number suggests.
What does Grape Soda taste like?
Sweet grape candy and citrus up front, with lavender, berry and OG pine and pepper behind it. Poorly cured or weaker cuts can taste earthy and muted, so the grape varies by grower.
What are the effects of Grape Soda?
Leafly's top-reported effects are relaxed, happy and aroused. Expect a quick onset, a happy, body-centric peak at 15–30 minutes, then growing heaviness after about an hour.
What terpenes are in Grape Soda?
Leafly lists myrcene as dominant, followed by caryophyllene and pinene. Other sources add limonene and linalool.
Is Grape Soda good for sleep?
It's an evening strain — the breeder pitches it for nighttime, and Westword calls it a bedtime pick. Larger doses bring couch-lock and lethargy.
Is Grape Soda good for beginners?
Use caution. It's fast-acting and high in THC, and Leafly lists paranoia among its negatives. Start with one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes.
How long does Grape Soda take to flower?
About 7–9 weeks indoors, with many cuts finishing between days 56 and 63, and outdoor harvests from late September to mid October.
Where can I buy Grape Soda THCA flower online?
Grape Soda isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. The closest fruit-forward pick is Straw Gua Mintz THCA Flower — a sweet Strawberry Guava × Kush Mints cross from $29, though it's lighter and more daytime than Grape Soda. For Grape Soda's heavier evening feel, try Super Boof (½oz $75, Purple Punch family) or Permanent Marker (½oz $59, indica-leaning). All third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75.
