Planet of the Grapes Strain

Planet of the Grapes Strain: Grape Candy Meets Chem Gas

The Planet of the Grapes strain is an indica-dominant hybrid from Ethos Genetics, made by crossing Grape Diamonds with Chem D-95. It smells like sweet grape candy and citrus with a sharp chem-gas edge, it's been reported as high as 30% THC, and it hits like the breeder promises: "a heavy hitter, great for end of day use or for those looking to totally unwind." Leafly's reviewers rate it 4.4 out of 5. It sits in the grape corner of our THCA flower collection next to classics like Grape Ape and Granddaddy Purple.

The name is a pun, but the genetics are serious: a grape-candy Ethos line on one side, and on the other a cross of Chem D with i95 — a cut that carries Triangle Kush, Legend OG and Stardawg. Below: the full family tree and where sources disagree, the terpenes, how the high unfolds, how strong it really is, how to use it, how to grow it and how to judge a bag.

Planet of the Grapes Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. SeedFinder's Ethos Genetics entry and AllBud both list it at 70% indica / 30% sativa. Leafly simply calls it a hybrid.
  • Ancestry: Grape Diamonds × Chem D-95. SeedFinder spells out the second parent as Chem D × i95, which matches AllBud and GrowDiaries.
  • Breeder: Ethos Genetics, credited by Leafly, SeedFinder and GrowDiaries. SeedFinder lists the original as a regular-seed release, never feminized.
  • THC: Leafly says it "can test as high as 30% THC"; AllBud lists 25–35%; GrowDiaries growers report around 30%.
  • CBD: Trace — well under 1%.
  • Offspring: Leafly lists 10th Planet as a child strain, and Ethos also released an autoflower, Planet of the Grapes Auto.

The family tree, parent by parent

  • Grape Diamonds (Ethos Genetics): Leafly describes it as a phenotype of Memberberry, and SeedFinder lists it as Member Berry × Member Berry. Member Berry traces back through Skunk Berry (a Blueberry × Purple Skunk cross) and Mandarin Sunset. That Blueberry-and-Skunk-Berry ancestry is where the grape candy comes from. Leafly lists Grape Diamonds at about 17% THC and myrcene-dominant.
  • Chem D: listed by SeedFinder as Chem '91 × Chemdog [D] — the Chemdawg family, and the source of the sharp chemical, fuel-like edge.
  • i95: listed by SeedFinder as Triangle Kush × (Legend OG × Stardawg IX2) — an OG-and-Chem powerhouse that brings potency and body weight.

Where sources disagree

The Grape Diamonds × Chem D-95 lineage is consistent across Leafly, SeedFinder, AllBud and GrowDiaries. The one outlier is a Canna Chronicles product blurb that lists Grape Ape × Starfighter — while the same article's body says Grape Diamonds × Chem D. We go with the majority, breeder-credited lineage.

There's also a name collision to know about. Strain Station Seeds sells a feminized "Planet Of Grapes" built from the same Grape Diamonds × Chem D 95 idea, which SeedFinder says is "historically associated with Ethos Genetics" — but that listing calls it 70% sativa, lists 22–26% THC and puts limonene first. If a seed pack or menu describes Planet of the Grapes as a sativa, it's probably that version or a different cut entirely.

Planet of the Grapes Terpene Profile

Leafly lists myrcene as the dominant terpene, with caryophyllene and limonene close behind in most descriptions; some guides add linalool. Strain Station Seeds' version puts limonene first, which fits its brighter, sativa-leaning description. Caryophyllene matters more than most terpenes: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Myrcene — earthy, ripe fruit, heavy body

Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, the chem-gas edge

Limonene — sweet citrus over the grape

Linalool — floral, calming finish

Typical relative profile for Planet of the Grapes — myrcene-led per Leafly. Limonene-forward cuts (like the Strain Station Seeds version) read brighter and more citrusy.

  • Myrcene: Musky, ripe-fruit and earthy. It's the terpene most often linked to the heavy, couch-friendly body that Planet of the Grapes is known for.
  • Caryophyllene: Pepper and spice — the backbone of the chem-gas, "diesel-hashy" finish reviewers describe, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
  • Limonene: The sweet citrus the breeder calls out alongside the grape, and part of the quick mood lift at the start.
  • Linalool: Floral and lavender-like; a supporting note in some cuts that rounds off the finish.

The grape itself isn't one terpene — it's the overall chemistry of the Blueberry-descended Grape Diamonds side. That's why one grower can describe "delicious red-fruit grape smells" and another, growing the same seeds, can say they never noticed any grape at all: phenotype and cure decide how loud it gets.

Appearance

AllBud describes Planet of the Grapes as long, spade-shaped, minty-green nugs threaded with thin amber hairs and a frosty coat of amber-tinted white trichomes. Canna Chronicles adds dense, resinous buds with "a hint of purple," and SeedFinder notes that grape-line plants can show purple hues late in bloom when nights run cool. Expect green first and purple only as a bonus — it's not a reliably purple strain the way Granddaddy Purple is.

Aroma and Flavor

The breeder sums it up as a "super sweet scent and flavor, rich in grape and sweet citrus." Open a jar and you get grape candy and berry first, then sweet citrus, then the Chem side — a sharp, chemical, fuel-like note underneath. Break a bud and the gas gets louder. One GrowDiaries grower called it "Very Loud and Dank Chem-D gassy Terps."

  • Leafly's top flavors: grape, chemical and chestnut — that nutty, roasted note on the exhale shows up in reviews again and again.
  • AllBud's flavors: citrus, fruity, grape, nutty, sour and sweet, with tobacco-like spice in the aroma and a "lightly sour citrusy exhale."
  • Reviewers: "grape notes with complex diesel-hashy spice." One Leafly reviewer wasn't a fan of how heavy the diesel taste was — if you only want sweet grape, try Grape Soda instead.

Recreational Effects

Leafly sums up Planet of the Grapes as "mostly calming," and its 66 reviews line up behind that. The most-reported effects:

  • Relaxed: the headline effect — a heavy, full-body unwind. One reviewer called it a "Super hard Indica."
  • Hungry: Leafly's #2 effect, and reviewers mean it: "munchies on 10," even for a high-tolerance smoker.
  • Euphoric and giggly: the first wave is happy and talkative before the body takes over.
  • Sleepy: at higher doses — one reviewer called it a "movie pass out strain."
  • Still functional at low doses: one reviewer noted they could still focus while relaxed, and AllBud lists sociable and uplifting among its effects.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First few minutes: AllBud says the high "will settle into your brain almost as soon as you finish your final delicious exhale" — a quick, happy, slightly giggly head change.
  • 15–45 minutes: "a touch of physical relaxation comes next, sneaking into your limbs." This is where the munchies show up.
  • 1–2 hours: the body gets heavier and the couch gets closer. One Leafly reviewer put the whole ride at about two hours.

Plan it for the end of the day. This is the strain the breeder pitched for unwinding — not for a to-do list.

How Strong Is Planet of the Grapes?

Strong. Leafly says it "can test as high as 30% THC" and calls it "an ideal choice for experienced cannabis consumers." Here's how the published numbers stack up:

  • Leafly: up to 30% THC; one reviewer reported 27%.
  • AllBud: 25–35%, with a "28–35% average" claimed in its description; its reviewers report about 26%.
  • GrowDiaries: around 30% reported by growers.
  • Strain Station Seeds' "Planet Of Grapes": 22–26% — a separate seed line.
  • Planet of the Grapes Auto: the breeder claims up to 25% total cannabinoids.

Take the high end with a grain of salt — 35% is a marketing number, not an average. Mid-20s is a realistic expectation for a good batch, and the Chem D × i95 side gives it more weight than the sweet smell suggests.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Planet of the Grapes against the 25–30% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Planet of the Grapes vs Similar Strains

  • vs Grape Ape: the classic grape indica. Grape Ape is sweeter, more purple and more purely sedating; Planet of the Grapes adds chem gas and a stronger euphoric opening.
  • vs Granddaddy Purple: GDP is grape-and-berry with a heavier, sleepier Purple Urkle body. Planet of the Grapes is gassier and usually tests higher.
  • vs Grape Gas: the closest flavor cousin — grape up front, fuel behind. Both suit evenings.
  • vs Chemdawg: the gassy grandparent on the Chem D side. Chemdawg is all fuel and a heady high; Planet of the Grapes trades some of that for grape candy and a heavier body.
  • vs Grape Pie and Purple Punch: dessert-grape strains with less gas and a softer, sweeter profile.
  • vs Blueberry: the old-school berry line behind Grape Diamonds. Blueberry is mellower and less potent.

On our shelf, Blueberry Pancakes is the closest match on the grape-jam sweetness and indica-leaning body — it's a Slurricane cross with a blueberry–grape jam nose. If it's the chem gas you're after, Mule Fuel is the gassier pick.

Who Planet of the Grapes Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: experienced smokers who want a potent evening strain; anyone who likes grape flavor with some gas behind it; movie nights, big dinners and winding down.

Poor fit: beginners, daytime productivity, or anyone avoiding the munchies. Leafly calls it a pick for experienced consumers, and reviewers agree it's not a light hitter.

How to Use Planet of the Grapes THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the grape before the gas takes over. Around 350–375°F keeps the sweet grape and citrus; 390–410°F brings out the chem spice and the heavier body.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — reports run as high as 30% THC. Regular users usually find two or three hits is plenty for the full relaxed, hungry arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Anxiety: the top reason on Leafly — about 37% of reviewers. One grower said it "snaps me out of it."
  • Pain: about 22% of Leafly reviewers; one reported "nearly instant pain relief" after two bong hits.
  • Low mood: about 19% of Leafly reviewers.
  • Appetite and sleep: AllBud and the breeder description both list loss of appetite and insomnia — consistent with the hungry, sleepy effects reviewers describe.
  • Muscle tension: AllBud and GrowDiaries list muscle spasms among reported uses.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly.
  • Headache and dizziness — listed as negatives by Leafly and GrowDiaries, usually from overdoing it.
  • Couch-lock and drowsiness — a feature at night, a problem in the afternoon.
  • Overeating — the munchies are real; have food you actually want on hand.

Is Planet of the Grapes good for sleep? Many reviewers use it that way, especially at higher doses. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

How to Judge a Good Bag of Planet of the Grapes

  • Ask for the breeder. A good seller should know whether it's the Ethos Genetics cut, the autoflower or a different "Planet of Grapes" seed line.
  • Grape and gas. The real thing has both. All sweet and no chem might be a different grape strain; all gas and no grape might be a weak phenotype.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 35% claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Frost and structure — spade-shaped, resin-heavy buds with amber-tinted trichomes, not leafy or loose.
  • A proper cure — the nutty, chestnut-like finish only shows up on a slow cure. Hay or grass smell means it was rushed.

Growing Planet of the Grapes

Growers mostly call it easy. On GrowDiaries — 84 diaries and 42 harvests — most reviewers rate it "Easy," a few "Normal."

  • Flowering: about 8–9 weeks. One GrowDiaries grower ran it "65 Days Flower" to 10–15% amber trichomes; Strain Station Seeds lists 56–63 days for its version.
  • Yield: Ethos doesn't publish a figure for the photoperiod. Strain Station Seeds claims 500–650 g/m² indoors and 700–900 g per plant outdoors for its version; one GrowDiaries grower pulled about 102 g of top buds from two plants.
  • Height: reports vary — one grower says it "stays short and compact," another that it grows fast and tall. Strain Station Seeds calls it medium-tall, and it responds well to topping, SCROG and LST.
  • Outdoors: harvest around early October in the Northern Hemisphere; cool nights can bring out purple.
  • Seeds: the original Ethos release was regular seeds; Ethos also sells Planet of the Grapes Auto (roughly 80 days, a breeder-claimed 80–125 g per plant), and Strain Station Seeds sells a feminized "Planet Of Grapes."
  • Smell: loud. Growers describe it as skunky and gassy in flower — plan on carbon filtration.
