Mai Tai Strain

Mai Tai Strain: A Tropical Hybrid With Two Family Trees

The Mai Tai strain is a tropical, fruit-forward hybrid named after the tiki cocktail — and like the drink, the recipe depends on who's making it. Leafly and AllBud list the original as Maui Wowie × Tutti Frutti, a limonene-led hybrid with mango, citrus and berry on the nose. A newer, widely sold version credited to California's Jungle Boys is Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet — grapier, denser and noticeably heavier in the body. Both share a euphoric, tingly high and a sweet-and-sour tropical profile, which puts Mai Tai in the bright, fruity corner of our THCA flower collection.

That split is the most important thing to know before you buy. Below: both lineages and how they differ, the terpene profile, what the potency numbers actually say, how the high unfolds, how to use it, the strains people confuse it with, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

Mai Tai Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Hybrid. AllBud and Vivosun both list it as a balanced 50/50; the Collegian's review of a Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet batch called it an indica-hybrid.
  • Original lineage: Maui Wowie × Tutti Frutti, per Leafly, AllBud and Weedmaps ("commonly cited"). Leafly lists the breeder as unknown.
  • Jungle Boys lineage: Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet. Weedmaps notes Jungle Boys "says its version" is this cross, and Westword's strain review calls it the current Mai Tai.
  • THC: Leafly's header shows 19%, while its own description says 26–32% (AllBud's range too). Vivosun lists 22–28%.
  • CBD: Negligible — under 1%. Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
  • Aliases: Mai Thai, Mai (Leafly).
  • Offspring: Leafly lists Sugar Rush and Cherimoya; Mai Tai is also a parent of Spiked Mai Tai and Maitai Gushers.

Two strains, one name

Westword puts it plainly: the original Mai Tai was a hybrid of Maui Waui and Tutti Frutti, while the version on most modern menus is Jungle Boys' Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet. Weedmaps adds that "origins are uncertain" and that phenotype differences make concrete grow data hard to pin down. In practice, they behave like two different plants:

  • Maui Wowie × Tutti Frutti: neon-green, fluffy-to-dense buds; mango, citrus and berry with a sharp minty edge; an energetic, sociable onset that settles into a relaxed body. This is the version Leafly and AllBud describe.
  • Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet: dense, chunky buds with purple flecks; grape and berry ("Crunch Berries," per Westword) over sour citrus; a heavier, more physical high that can end on the couch.

Neither lineage is "fake" — they're two breeding projects that ended up with the same cocktail name. If a menu or seller can tell you which one they have, you'll know what to expect.

Not to be confused with

  • Spiked Mai Tai: Mai Tai × Jungle Cake. SeedFinder credits Jungle Boys; Leafly's Canadian listing credits Cresco — the sources disagree. Leafly reviewers call it energetic and focused.
  • Mai Tai Cookies: a different, CBD-rich strain from Terraform Genetics — Alien Orange Cookies × ACDC, per Leafly.
  • Maitai Gushers: Mai Tai × Gushers — a 70% sativa hybrid at 19–20% THC, per AllBud.

Mai Tai Terpene Profile

Leafly lists limonene as Mai Tai's dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and pinene. Vivosun's profile of the Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet cut puts myrcene in the top three, and The Bluntness cites Hytiva data naming terpinolene and myrcene as dominant on Jungle Boys' version. Different lineages, different terpene leads — which is exactly why the two Mai Tais smell and hit differently. Caryophyllene is worth knowing on its own: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Limonene — citrus, tropical lift

Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, body

Myrcene — mango, earthy, relaxed body

Pinene — pine, mint-sharp edge

Typical relative profile for Mai Tai — limonene-led per Leafly. Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet cuts often run more myrcene-heavy (some lab data shows terpinolene on top).

  • Limonene: The sweet-and-sour citrus that makes Mai Tai smell like its namesake — and a driver of the euphoric, social onset.
  • Caryophyllene: The peppery spice under the fruit, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
  • Myrcene: Earthy, mango-adjacent and musky; it's the relaxed body floor, and the reason the Punch cut gets heavy.
  • Pinene: Fresh pine, and likely part of the "sharp flowery mint" note Leafly and AllBud describe — the Collegian's tester tasted more pine than citrus when smoked.

The tropical "mai tai" impression isn't one terpene — it's limonene's citrus layered over myrcene's ripe-fruit depth, with pinene keeping it bright.

Appearance

The original Mai Tai is a looker: AllBud describes dense, fluffy, oversized bright neon-green nugs with golden amber undertones, orange hairs and "golden amber crystal trichomes," and Leafly's description matches. The Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet cut is chunkier and more oblong — Westword notes heavy trichome coverage and purple spots on the sugar leaves, more often than on Purple Punch itself. The Rocky Mountain Collegian review of an Organic Alternatives batch from Fort Collins described dense, mossy-green buds with burnt-orange pistils, like fall foliage.

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar of the original and you get a fruity berry overtone, sweet-and-sour citrus and a sharp, flowery mint, per Leafly and AllBud. Leafly's users list tree fruit, tropical and mango as the top flavors; Weedmaps' community splits it sweet (37%), tropical (34%) and berry (29%). The Jungle Boys cut leans grape and berry over sour citrus — lemon, orange or tart cherry depending on the phenotype — with an earthy, slightly bitter finish. On the exhale, expect citrus and pine first, then a peppery, earthy tail. If the cocktail comparison sounds like marketing, it isn't far off: pineapple-orange-mango sweetness with a sour edge is the common thread across reviews.

Recreational Effects

AllBud describes an energetic, uplifting onset that gives way to a sedative body buzz. On Leafly, the most-reported effects are:

  • Euphoric: the headline effect — a quick lift in mood.
  • Tingly: a full-body tingle that many reviewers single out.
  • Relaxed: a calm, heavy body that deepens with dose.
  • Sociable and uplifted: AllBud's tags, and why Mai Tai suits a relaxed get-together.

The Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet version is more physical. Westword's reviewer found it "edible-like" — it hit the eyes first, drained energy after about 30 minutes, and ended in munchies and sleep — though "Mai Tai never robs my wits." The Collegian's tester got a strong head high and heavy eyes, a little early jitteriness, then a creative, motivated calm that was good for winding down without falling asleep.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a fast, euphoric head change and a tingly body.
  • 15–60 minutes: the peak — social, happy and relaxed. On the Punch cut, the body weight arrives around the half-hour mark.
  • 1–3 hours: a long, mellow fade. Higher doses tip toward the couch, munchies and sleep.

Which one feels better depends on timing: the original is an afternoon social strain; the Jungle Boys cut is an evening one.

How Strong Is Mai Tai?

Mai Tai is consistently described as potent — Leafly calls its THC "higher than average" and says it suits experienced consumers — but the numbers vary a lot by source and lineage:

  • Leafly: 19% THC in the header, 26–32% in the description, plus about 1% CBG.
  • AllBud: 26–32%.
  • Vivosun: 22–28% for the Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet cut.
  • Weedmaps: "about 30%" in some grows; The Bluntness says Jungle Boys' version often tests above 30%.
  • A real lab number: the Organic Alternatives batch reviewed by the Collegian tested 25.23% THC.

Treat the 30%+ figures as the top of the range, not the norm. Mid-to-high 20s is a fair expectation for good flower, and the grower and batch matter more than the name.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Mai Tai against the 19–32% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Mai Tai vs Similar Strains

  • vs Maui Wowie: the Hawaiian sativa parent of the original. Maui Wowie is lighter and more energetic; Mai Tai adds Tutti Frutti's sweetness and more body.
  • vs Purple Punch: the grape-candy indica parent of the Jungle Boys cut. Purple Punch is sleepier; Mai Tai keeps more citrus and head.
  • vs Sunset Sherbet: the other Jungle Boys parent — creamy, sweet and balanced. Mai Tai is fruitier and more tropical.
  • vs Guava and Papaya: other tropical-fruit hybrids in the same lane. Guava is the most citrus-sharp; Papaya the most relaxing.
  • vs Hawaiian Haze and Tropicana Cookies: more energetic, sativa-leaning tropical picks for daytime.
  • vs Dayglow Mousse: our closest in-stock match — an Agent Orange grandchild with the same limonene-led, bright-citrus nose and upbeat lift. It's a better match for the original Mai Tai than for the heavy Purple Punch cut.

Who Mai Tai Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: fans of tropical and citrus flavors; afternoon or evening social sessions; experienced smokers who want euphoria with a relaxed body.

Poor fit: beginners (Leafly flags it for experienced consumers), anyone prone to THC paranoia, and people who need to stay productive after a big dose of the Purple Punch cut. If you want the berry-and-body version, Blueberry Pancakes — an indica-dominant dessert strain, from $24 — is the closer fit on our shelf.

How to Use Mai Tai THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the citrus and mango. Around 350–380°F keeps the limonene bright; 390–410°F brings out the peppery, body-heavy side.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — Mai Tai's body effect can arrive well after the head change. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Anxiety: the most-cited use on Leafly (about 27% of reviewers) — though "paranoid" is also one of its listed negatives, so dose matters.
  • Low mood: about 24%, consistent with the euphoric headline effect.
  • Pain: about 10% on Leafly; AllBud also lists chronic pain, inflammation, cramps and muscle spasms.
  • Stress: listed by AllBud and Vivosun, and the reason it's a popular wind-down strain.

If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly.
  • Paranoia — Leafly's third-listed negative, mostly at high doses or low tolerance.
  • Couch-lock and sleepiness — especially with the Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet cut.
  • Dizziness — occasionally reported, usually from overdoing it.

Is Mai Tai good for sleep? The Jungle Boys cut can be, at higher doses; the original is more social than sedating. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Mai Tai Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask which Mai Tai. Maui Wowie × Tutti Frutti and Purple Punch × Sunset Sherbet are different plants. A seller who knows is a good sign.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Tropical fruit on the nose. Citrus, mango or berry should jump out of the jar; flat, hay-like flower has lost its terpenes.
  • Frost and color: heavy amber-tinged trichomes, orange pistils, and — on the Punch cut — purple flecks.
  • Density: firm, sticky buds. Westword found some cuts almost too dense, which can hide moisture — make sure it's cured, not damp.

Growing Mai Tai

Because two lineages share the name, grow data varies; Weedmaps says phenotype differences make concrete information hard to pin down. What the sources agree on:

  • Flowering: about 8–9 weeks indoors (Vivosun); Weedmaps says about 9 weeks; WikiMMJ (via The Bluntness) 7–9 weeks.
  • Environment: best grown indoors, per Weedmaps.
  • Yield: about 400–500 g/m² indoors and up to 600 g per plant outdoors, per Vivosun.
  • Outdoors: harvest early to mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Difficulty: moderately easy — Vivosun calls it suitable for novices; WikiMMJ calls it easy.
  • Seeds and cuts: Jungle Boys' version circulates mostly as clones; Westword lists Colorado growers including Bud Fox, Clarity Gardens, Doc's Apothecary and Dutch Botanicals, with several phenotypes.
