Tangie Strain Genetics & Lineage

• Ancestry: California Orange (Cali-O) × Skunk #1. Every credible source agrees on this, which is rare.
• Breeder: Crockett Family Farms — a multi-generation California farming family in the Sierra Nevada foothills, who bred it in the 2000s from their own California Orange cut.
• Distributor: DNA Genetics, Amsterdam. They partnered with the Crocketts around 2010–11 to sell seeds globally after Tangie's Cannabis Cup wins. Several pages credit DNA as the breeder; that is a distribution relationship being mistaken for authorship.
• Type: Sativa-dominant, roughly 70/30. Some databases list it as pure sativa or flatly 50/50 — the 70/30 reading matches the reported effects.
• THC Levels: 18%–22% across most sources. One widely-cited 26.8% figure is a single lab result on one producer's lot, not a range.
• CBD Levels: Negligible, 0.1% or below.

The Citrus Family: What's Actually Related to Tangie

This is the section this strain has needed for a decade. Five names, constant confusion, and only two real relationships.

California Orange (Cali-O) — the mother

Same plant, two names. Cali-O is just the shorthand. It is a 1980s California citrus classic and it is Tangie's direct parent, not a synonym for Tangie. If someone tells you Cali-O and Tangie are the same thing, they have the generations reversed.

Tangerine Dream — not related at all

A completely different plant from Barney's Farm: G13 × Neville's A5 Haze × Afghani. It shares no genetics with Tangie whatsoever. The confusion is purely name-and-flavour, and it is made worse by at least one popular guide describing Tangerine Dream as a "predecessor strain that Tangie was developed to honor." That is not supported by anyone close to the Crocketts, and it is worth ignoring.

Agent Orange — also not related

Orange Velvet × Jack the Ripper, bred by TGA Subcool / MzJill Genetics. No California Orange, no Skunk, no Tangie anywhere in it. Citrus by convergence, not by descent.

Agent Tangie — genuinely related, and the one menus get wrong

This one is family: Agent Orange × Tangie, which makes it roughly half Tangie and Tangie's offspring rather than its sibling. One major platform lists Agent Tangie as "California Orange × Skunk" — which is Tangie's own lineage pasted onto the wrong strain, and would make the two plants indistinguishable. Two independent seed-bank and database sources give Agent Orange × Tangie, and no grower claims otherwise.

The short version: Cali-O is Tangie's parent. Agent Tangie is Tangie's child. Tangerine Dream and Agent Orange are strangers with similar names.

What Strains Make Up Tangie?

California Orange crossed with Skunk #1, and each parent contributes something you can taste separately.

California Orange brings the citrus — it is the source of the tangerine-peel character that makes this strain identifiable blindfolded. Skunk #1 brings structure, vigour and the earthy, faintly skunky base that keeps the sweetness from reading as one-dimensional candy. Without the Skunk half, Tangie would be a pleasant orange flavour; with it, there is something underneath to hold the flavour up.

A note on why published panels disagree. You will find Tangie listed as limonene-first on one site, myrcene-first on another and caryophyllene-first on a third. That is not a dispute about the plant. It is lab-to-lab and phenotype-to-phenotype variance, plus the fact that most sites publish a single panel from a single producer's lot as though it were the cultivar's fixed signature. Limonene dominance is the consensus across sources and matches the nose; the others are single-lab artifacts.

Appearance

Elongated, slightly airy sativa-structured buds in bright lime-to-forest green, threaded with the dense orange pistils that make the name look deliberate. Trichome coverage is good but not extreme — this is not a frost-first strain, and judging it by Gelato-family standards will mislead you.

Structure runs looser than a dessert hybrid. That is the sativa lean, not a growing fault.

Aroma and Flavor

The most convincing citrus in cannabis, and the reason the strain survived two decades of fashion.

The jar opens sharp — tangerine and orange peel, closer to zest than juice, bright enough to read as almost artificial. Under it sits skunk and earth from the Skunk #1 side, with a faint spice. Some phenotypes finish slightly cheesy, which is the Skunk showing through.

• Yield: Around 450–550 g/m² indoors, and generous outdoors in a warm, dry finish.
• Structure: Medium-to-tall with real sativa stretch. Topping and training are effectively mandatory indoors.
• Feeding: It rewards precision more than most. Overfeeding flattens the citrus, which is the entire point of the plant.

Buying Tangie: What Actually Matters

• Buy on the nose. The citrus should be sharp and immediate through a sealed jar. A quiet Tangie has lost the only reason to choose it.
• Smell for the skunk underneath. Pure orange with no earthy base usually means a rushed cure or a different plant wearing the label.
• Check which citrus strain you are actually buying. Tangerine Dream and Agent Orange are unrelated; Agent Tangie is a different cross. Ask.
• Ignore hero THC numbers. 18%–22% is the honest range. A 26%+ figure is one lot, not the cultivar.
