MOB Strain: The Mother of Berries From the East Coast
The MOB strain — short for Mother of Berries — is an East Coast blueberry indica that passed around Boston and Maine as a clone-only cut for years before the Dutch seed company T.H.Seeds released it as feminized seed. It smells like a jar of fresh blueberry jam, grows short and fast with pink-to-purple hues, and delivers a deeply relaxing, hungry, sleepy high that High Times summed up as a "very strong indica stone." It belongs in the berry, evening corner of our THCA flower collection.
It's also one of the more confusing names on a menu. The letters have been read as Mother of Berries, Mother of All Berries and Maine Original Blueberry; the origin is told as Maine by some sources and Boston by others; and nobody has published a confirmed cross. Below: what MOB actually is, where the sources agree and disagree, how strong it is, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at MOB's frosty buds.

- Type: Indica. T.H.Seeds lists it as 100% indica, as did High Times' 2019 grow report; AllBud calls it an indica-dominant hybrid at 90/10.
- Ancestry: Blueberry-family, but the exact cross is unconfirmed. AllBud and GrowDiaries list Blueberry × Jerry Berry. SeedFinder's genealogy marks it "probably" Freezland (the Jerry Berry cut) × Blueberry F2. Leafly lists Blueberry as the only parent, and HighRise Seeds' MOB line traces it as a clone of DJ Short's Blueberry.
- Breeder: T.H.Seeds brought it to seed. According to SeedFinder's breeder listing, it is an "East Coast legend" that a Boston friend brought to the company in Amsterdam. High Times reports the feminized seeds were produced in Spain after the original selection.
- THC: Leafly 18%; AllBud 19–21%; GrowDiaries 20%, with a 16–24% reported range; High Times "up to more than 20 percent."
- CBD: Negligible. Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
- Aliases: Mother of Berries, Mother of All Berries, Maine Original Blueberry (also seen as Maine's Own Blueberry), M.O.B.
Maine or Boston? The origin story
The two camps don't fully agree. Leafly describes MOB as a Maine indica, and the alias "Maine Original Blueberry" points the same way; one AllBud reviewer says it grew out of bagseed kept going in Maine for more than ten years. High Times tells a Boston story instead: California genetics that reached Boston in the mid-to-late 1990s, grown out by one man. Even Leafly's own reviews include a user insisting it was bred in Boston, not Maine. What everyone agrees on is that it's a New England cult cut that went from clone to seed through T.H.Seeds.
What does MOB stand for?
Most sources — T.H.Seeds, SeedFinder, Leafly, AllBud — say Mother of Berries. High Times adds a twist: the strain was originally called "MOD," the initials of the grower who raised it, and was renamed MOB once it got popular and he wanted to keep his identity quiet. "Maine Original Blueberry" is the regional reading. Either way, it's the same blueberry indica.
MOB is not Mob Boss
Several unrelated things share the letters. Mob Boss is a separate hybrid with its own listing on Leafly. You'll also see at least one dispensary brand selling flower labeled "M.O.B." where the letters stand for something else entirely, plus T.H.Seeds' own MOB Cake cross and an AllBud listing for Purple MOB. This page covers the original Mother of Berries.
MOB Terpene Profile
Leafly lists limonene as MOB's dominant terpene, followed by myrcene and caryophyllene; GrowDiaries ties the berry-over-earth flavor to myrcene, caryophyllene and pinene. It's a slightly unusual mix for a sleepy indica — the limonene brightens the jam on the nose, while the myrcene and caryophyllene build the heavy body. Caryophyllene is notable in its own right: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Limonene — bright, sweet berry-citrus top note
Myrcene — earthy, musky, heavy body
Caryophyllene — pepper and spice underneath
Pinene — faint pine and herbal edge
Typical relative profile for MOB — limonene-led per Leafly, with myrcene close behind. Cuts vary; some read more myrcene-forward and earthier.
- Limonene: The sweet, bright lift on top of the blueberry — and a reason the first few minutes feel happy rather than instantly sedating.
- Myrcene: Earthy, musky and fruity; it's the terpene most associated with the heavy, couch-bound finish.
- Caryophyllene: A peppery, spicy undertone, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Pinene: A faint pine and herbal edge that keeps the sweetness from turning cloying.
The blueberry itself isn't a single terpene — it's the Blueberry family's overall chemistry, and it's the trait growers protect when they keep an MOB cut alive.
Appearance
MOB grows like a classic indica: short, bushy plants with broad leaves and tight internodes. The buds are dense and chunky, often golf-ball shaped, in deep or bright green with orange pistils and a heavy trichome coat. The giveaway is the color — T.H.Seeds and High Times both describe pink to purple hues, and AllBud notes "bright neon green" buds with purple undertones. Cool night temperatures late in flower push the purple further.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar of good MOB and it smells like fruit preserves. GrowDiaries calls it a "handful of fresh jam"; AllBud compares it to "freshly baked blueberry pie." Blueberry leads, with mixed berry and a sweet candy edge, then an earthy, slightly skunky base when you break the bud. The inhale is sweet blueberry; the exhale is berry over earth with a light pepper finish. Leafly's users tag it berry, blueberry and sweet, and AllBud adds fruity, pungent, earthy and skunky to the aroma list.
Recreational Effects
MOB is an evening strain. Leafly's top-reported effects are sleepy, relaxed and hungry; AllBud adds euphoric and happy. High Times described "deep relaxation, often followed by heavy sleepiness." The most-reported effects:
- Relaxed: the core of the experience — muscles loosen and the body gets heavy.
- Sleepy: the headline effect at a full dose; many people save it for bedtime.
- Hungry: a strong appetite kick — have food on hand.
- Happy and euphoric: a calm, content mood lift in the first stretch.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a soft, happy head change and loosening shoulders. AllBud describes an uplifting start that can turn sedating quickly at low tolerance.
- 30–60 minutes: the peak — heavy body calm, hunger, and a quiet, content mind.
- 1–3 hours: a slow slide toward sleep. Plan to stay put.
The first few minutes can feel light. That's the trap — the weight builds after you think you've judged it.

Dense, purple-tinged MOB buds break up easily for a smoky-grey glass hand pipe.

How Strong Is MOB?
MOB is strong, but it isn't one of the modern 30% headline strains. The published numbers sit in a tight range:
- Leafly: 18% THC, about 1% CBG.
- AllBud: 19–21% THC.
- GrowDiaries: 20% listed, with 16–24% reported.
- High Times: "up to more than 20 percent."
Where MOB earns its reputation is the feel, not the number — High Times called it a "very strong indica stone," and its one competition result backs that up: 2nd place in the indica category at the 2015 Expo Grow Cannabis Cup in Irún, Spain, its first time entered. Think classic heavy indica, closer to Granddaddy Purple than to a modern gas heavyweight.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of MOB against the 18–24% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
MOB vs Similar Strains
- vs Blueberry: the family it comes from. Blueberry is a touch more balanced; MOB is shorter, faster, purpler and heavier.
- vs Blueberry Kush: Blueberry crossed with OG Kush — earthier and more kushy, where MOB stays jammier.
- vs Granddaddy Purple: another purple, sleepy indica. GDP leans grape; MOB leans blueberry.
- vs Black Diamond: dark berry and a heavy body too, with a red-wine depth instead of bright jam.
- vs Permanent Marker: not a berry strain — it's a modern (Biscotti × Sherb Bx) × Jealousy hybrid with a loud gas-and-floral nose. We list it as the closest match on our shelf because the potency and heavy evening body are in the same lane. For the blueberry flavor, Blueberry Pancakes is the closer fit.
Who MOB Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: evening and bedtime use, unwinding after work, appetite, and anyone who loves sweet berry indicas.
Poor fit: daytime productivity, social plans, or anyone who needs to stay sharp. Beginners can handle it at a low dose, but expect to get sleepy. For an indica-dominant berry option on our shelf, Blueberry Pancakes (from $24) is the closest flavor match; for heavy gas instead, try Mule Fuel.
How to Use MOB THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the blueberry jam. Around 350–380°F keeps the fruit and limonene up front; 390–410°F brings out the heavier myrcene body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — the body weight builds after the first light minutes. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full evening arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety and stress: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (about 36%) — though "anxious" also shows up among its negatives, so dose matters.
- Pain and body tension: about 34% of Leafly reviewers mention it.
- Sleep: about 33% report using it for insomnia, consistent with the sleepy headline effect.
- Appetite: "hungry" is one of its top three reported effects.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly and GrowDiaries.
- Dizziness — listed by GrowDiaries, usually from overdoing it.
- Anxiety — less common with an indica this mellow, but reported, especially at high doses.
- Heavy sedation — the point for some, a problem for others. Don't plan anything after.
Is MOB good for sleep? For most people, yes — it's one of the reasons it built a following. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is MOB Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask which MOB. Mother of Berries is not Mob Boss, MOB Cake or a brand called "M.O.B." A good seller knows the difference.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. MOB usually lands around 18–24%; treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Real blueberry. The nose should read jam or pie. Plain earth with no fruit means a weak cut or a stale bag.
- Dense, frosty buds with pink or purple tones — and trichomes inside the bud, not just on top.
- A proper cure — hay or grass smell means it was rushed, and berry terps are the first to go.
Growing MOB
MOB is a fast, compact indica that suits small tents, sea-of-green setups and short northern seasons. T.H.Seeds sells it feminized only.
- Flowering: 7–8 weeks per T.H.Seeds (SeedFinder lists about 49 days); High Times reports 42–55 days, and GrowDiaries 49–56.
- Yield: 450–550 g/m² indoors per the breeder. High Times' test grow pulled 273 g from four plants — about 68 g each.
- Height: short — 60–110 cm per the breeder; High Times' plants finished at 46–58 cm.
- Outdoors: an early finisher. HighRise Seeds' MOB line finishes in late August below 45°N and early to mid-September farther north.
- Watch for: one SeedFinder grower reported seeds throughout the crop, so check flowers closely for stray pollen sacs.
- Seeds: T.H.Seeds (feminized) is the main source; HighRise Seeds and Blind Rooster Seeds sell their own MOB-named lines.
