Black Diamond Strain

Black Diamond Strain: The Near-Black Indica From Northern California

The Black Diamond strain is a Northern California indica bred from Blackberry and Diamond OG, known for buds so dark purple they look almost black under a glittering coat of trichomes — hence the name. It smells like berries, grapes and red wine over musky earth, and it delivers a relaxed, giggly, appetite-raising high that settles into heavy sedation as the night goes on. It sits in the dark-fruit, evening corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also an older strain that gets confused with a lot of look-alike names: Black Diamond OG, Black Diamonds from H.B.K. Genetics, a CBD-rich Black Diamond, an autoflower, and the unrelated Black Domina. Below: what the original actually is, where the sources disagree, how strong it is, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

Black Diamond Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica-dominant. Leafly lists it as an indica, AllBud as a 70% indica hybrid, and SeedFinder lists Zamnesia's seed version at 90% indica. GrowDiaries simply calls it a "Cali hybrid." Every source agrees the effects land on the indica side.
  • Ancestry: Blackberry × Diamond OG — the cross Leafly, GrowDiaries, GreenState and SeedFinder all list. GreenState notes that some sources name Diamond Kush instead of Diamond OG as the second parent.
  • Deeper roots: SeedFinder's family tree for Black Diamond OG runs back through OG Kush and Hindu Kush on the Diamond OG side, and through The Black and Afghani landrace genetics on the Blackberry side — the same hash-plant family as Afghan Kush.
  • Breeder: Unknown. Leafly and AllBud say it was bred in Northern California; AllBud and GrowDiaries describe it as clone-only. Zamnesia now sells a feminized seed version.
  • THC: Leafly lists 16%; AllBud 18–24%; GrowDiaries about 21%; SeedFinder 23% for the Zamnesia seed line.
  • CBD and minors: CBD is negligible (0–1%). AllBud lists about 1% CBN.
  • Aliases: Black Diamond OG, Black Diamond Kush and the abbreviation "Bdi," per Leafly. Leafly also lists a child strain, BDX (Black Diamond X).

Black Diamond vs the look-alike names

Search "Black Diamond" and you'll hit several different plants:

  • Black Diamond OG: generally the same strain — Leafly treats it as an alias. SeedFinder files it separately as a Clone Only Strains entry with the same Diamond OG × Blackberry parents.
  • Black Diamonds (H.B.K. Genetics): a separate breeder's line, not the NorCal clone.
  • CBD Black Diamond (Kera Seeds) and Black Diamond Automatic: a CBD-rich cultivar and an autoflower built from the Zamnesia line. Neither is the original high-THC indica.
  • Black Domina: a different, older Sensi Seeds indica that often gets mixed up with Black Diamond. They're unrelated.

An old-school strain that's hard to find

Black Diamond came up in the Northern California clone scene and was a dispensary staple through the late 2000s and early 2010s. GreenState calls it an older strain that's "often overlooked" for newer flavors and hard to find today. No reliable source credits it with a Cannabis Cup win — its reputation rests on its looks and its heavy, dependable effect, not trophies.

Black Diamond Terpene Profile

Leafly lists myrcene as Black Diamond's dominant terpene, followed by pinene and caryophyllene; other strain guides add humulene, limonene and a trace of linalool. That myrcene-first profile is classic for heavy, sedating indicas. Caryophyllene has a notable claim of its own: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Myrcene — musky earth, heavy body

Pinene — pine and woody resin

Caryophyllene — pepper and spice, OG backbone

Humulene — woody, hoppy dryness

Typical relative profile for Black Diamond — myrcene-led per Leafly. Fruit-forward cuts read more grape and berry; OG-leaning cuts read more pine and pepper.

  • Myrcene: Musky, earthy and herbal — the base of Black Diamond's aroma and the terpene most associated with its heavy, couch-bound finish.
  • Pinene: The pine and woody resin notes reviewers pick up, and part of why the first stage of the high feels clearer than the end.
  • Caryophyllene: Pepper and spice from the Diamond OG side, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
  • Humulene: A dry, woody, hop-like note that rounds out the earthy finish.

The berry, grape and red-wine character isn't a single terpene — it's the Blackberry side's overall chemistry, and it's louder in fruit-forward phenotypes.

Appearance

This is where the name comes from. Black Diamond buds are dense and medium-sized, in deep purple shading toward near-black, often with kelly-green edges, threaded with long, thin, light-orange pistils. On top sits a heavy, glittering coat of trichomes — the "diamond" over the black. Leafly describes "glittery trichome coverage and purple coloring"; AllBud calls the buds "remarkably frosted"; GreenState's reviewer compared the dense, tapered nugs to small pine trees. The darkest color shows up when the plant finishes in cool nighttime temperatures, so expect batch-to-batch variation from deep violet to almost jet-black.

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar and you get musky earth first, then dark berries and grape — Leafly compares the aroma to "deep red wine." Break a bud and the fruit gets louder, with a hashy, pungent edge underneath. The inhale is sweet blackberry and grape; the exhale is earthy, woody and slightly peppery, with pine resin in the background. GreenState's reviewer picked up a rich cocoa note that lingers after the exhale, and AllBud notes the taste "lingers in the throat." Reviewers on AllBud also mention tangy, nutty and kush notes.

  • Leafly flavors: earthy, woody, berry.
  • AllBud flavors: berry, grape, herbal, pine, sweet, woody.
  • GrowDiaries tastes: earthy, woody, grape.

Recreational Effects

Black Diamond is an indica through and through, but it doesn't start that way. Reviewers describe a quick, mildly uplifting, sometimes giggly onset — GreenState calls it almost sativa-like at first — before the body relaxation takes over and the evening ends in heavy sedation. On Leafly, with nearly 500 ratings averaging 4.4 stars, the top reported effects are:

  • Relaxed: the headline effect — muscle tension eases early, starting in the back and shoulders.
  • Hungry: a strong appetite boost; plan for snacks.
  • Giggly: a light, social, easily amused first stage.
  • Happy and euphoric: AllBud's listed effects add euphoria and happiness to the mix.
  • Sleepy: the late-stage pull that makes it a night strain.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a quick, light head change, sometimes giggly and talkative.
  • 15–45 minutes: the body takes over — heavy limbs, relaxed muscles, rising appetite.
  • 1–3 hours: a slow slide into couch-lock and sleep, especially at higher doses.

Some reviewers call it a "creeper," so wait a full 15 minutes before deciding the first hit didn't work.

How Strong Is Black Diamond?

Black Diamond is solidly potent without being a record-chaser. The numbers vary a lot by source and cut:

  • Leafly: 16% THC, 0% CBD — though it still describes the strain as higher in THC than average.
  • AllBud: 18–24% THC, about 1% CBN.
  • GrowDiaries: about 21% THC, 0.1% CBD.
  • SeedFinder (Zamnesia seeds): 23% THC.

What makes it feel strong is the effect more than the number: a myrcene-heavy terpene profile and a body-first high that turns sedating as you add hits. GreenState calls it an "expert-level indica." Plenty of newer strains test higher, but a well-grown Black Diamond still hits like a heavy night strain.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Black Diamond batch against the 16–24% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Black Diamond vs Similar Strains

  • vs Blackberry Kush: another dark-berry indica with a kush backbone. Blackberry Kush leans more hashy; Black Diamond is more grape-and-wine.
  • vs Granddaddy Purple: the grape-forward purple benchmark. GreenState suggests GDP and Purple Kush as stronger sleep picks; Black Diamond has the more lively, giggly start.
  • vs Purple Kush: a pure-indica, earthy-grape California classic. Similar sleepy finish, less berry.
  • vs Black Afghan and Black Mamba: the other dark, heavy "black" indicas. Black Afghan is hash and pepper; Black Mamba is sweet grape and berry over pine, with a similar purple-to-black look.
  • vs Grape Ape: sweeter, candy-grape and very sedating — a close cousin on the flavor side.
  • vs Blueberry Pancakes: our closest match in stock. An indica-dominant Slurricane × Purple Panty Dropper dessert strain with a blueberry–grape jam nose, maple and vanilla batter, and myrcene, caryophyllene and linalool terps. It's sweeter and more dessert-like than Black Diamond's earthy red-wine profile, but it lands in the same dark-fruit, evening-indica lane.

Who Black Diamond Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: evening and nighttime use; unwinding after a long day; anyone who wants an appetite boost; fans of dark fruit, grape and earthy flavors; movie nights with friends.

Poor fit: daytime productivity, beginners who don't plan to stay put, or anyone who needs to be sharp afterward. For something heavy but gassier instead of fruity, Mule Fuel is the earthy, diesel-leaning indica on our shelf.

How to Use Black Diamond THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the berry and grape. Around 350–380°F keeps the fruit and wine notes; 390–410°F brings out the pepper, pine and the heavier body effect.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15 minutes — Black Diamond can creep. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full arc from giggly to sleepy. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly, AllBud and GrowDiaries, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 30% of reviewers).
  • Anxiety: about 26% report help — at low doses; heavy doses can make some people dizzy.
  • Low mood: about 25%, consistent with the happy, giggly first stage.
  • Sleep: AllBud calls it "highly sedative" and recommends it as a nighttime smoke.
  • Appetite, body tension and nausea: GrowDiaries and GreenState note patients reaching for it for appetite loss, muscle spasms, aches and nausea.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly and GrowDiaries.
  • Dizziness — Leafly's third most-reported negative, usually from overdoing it.
  • Couch-lock and grogginess — heavy doses can leave you sluggish the next morning.
  • Munchies — a side effect or a benefit, depending on your goals.

Is Black Diamond good for sleep? For most people, yes — it's a night strain. GreenState's reviewer notes the uplifting onset can delay sleep for some, so take it 30–60 minutes before bed rather than in bed. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Black Diamond Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Color is a clue, not proof. Real Black Diamond is deep purple to near-black, but color comes from genetics and cool temperatures — it doesn't mean more potency.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Berry, grape and earth. A true Black Diamond smells like dark fruit and red wine over musk. Pure diesel or citrus with no fruit suggests a different strain.
  • Ask which Black Diamond. The NorCal clone, a Zamnesia seed version, Black Diamonds or a CBD Black Diamond are different plants.
  • Frost and density, with trichomes glittering inside the bud, not just on top.
  • A proper cure — hay or grass smell means it was rushed, and it kills the wine-like nose.

Growing Black Diamond

Black Diamond grows like the indica it is: bushy, sturdy and dense. GrowDiaries growers call it challenging, mainly around feeding and keeping conditions stable through key growth phases.

  • Flowering: about 8–10 weeks. Leafly lists 63–72 days; SeedFinder 8–9 weeks; GrowDiaries growers report just under 60 days.
  • Yield: around 400 g/m² per GrowDiaries; up to 500 g/m² indoors and 300 g per plant outdoors for the Zamnesia seed line, per SeedFinder.
  • Height: roughly 80–150 cm indoors and around 180 cm outdoors, depending on the cut.
  • Color: cooler nights late in flower bring out the deepest purples and near-black hues.
  • Humidity: dense indica buds need good airflow to avoid mold late in flower.
  • Genetics: the original is a clone-only cut; Zamnesia sells feminized seeds and an autoflower version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Black Diamond indica or sativa?

Black Diamond is indica-dominant. Leafly lists it as an indica, AllBud as a 70% indica hybrid, and SeedFinder lists Zamnesia's seed version at 90% indica. It starts with a light, giggly lift but finishes heavy and sleepy.

What is Black Diamond a cross of?

Blackberry × Diamond OG, according to Leafly, GrowDiaries, GreenState and SeedFinder. Some sources name Diamond Kush instead of Diamond OG. It was bred in Northern California as a clone-only strain; the original breeder isn't documented.

How strong is Black Diamond?

Leafly lists 16% THC, AllBud 18–24%, GrowDiaries about 21% and Zamnesia's seed version 23%. It feels stronger than the number because the high is so body-heavy, so start small.

What does Black Diamond taste like?

Sweet blackberry and grape on the inhale, then earthy, woody, peppery notes on the exhale. Leafly compares the aroma to deep red wine, and some reviewers pick up a lingering cocoa note.

Why is it called Black Diamond?

For its looks: deep purple, near-black buds covered in a glittering coat of trichomes — black stones with diamond sparkle.

Is Black Diamond the same as Black Diamond OG?

Usually, yes. Leafly lists Black Diamond OG and Black Diamond Kush as aliases. It is not the same as Black Diamonds from H.B.K. Genetics, the CBD-rich Black Diamond, or Black Domina.

Is Black Diamond good for sleep?

For most people. AllBud calls it highly sedative and a nighttime smoke. The onset can feel briefly uplifting, so take it 30–60 minutes before bed.

Is Black Diamond good for anxiety?

About 26% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety and 30% with stress. Dizziness is one of its top negatives, so a low dose is the safer approach.

Is Black Diamond good for beginners?

It's manageable if you take one small puff and plan to stay home. It's an expert-level indica at higher doses, with couch-lock and strong munchies.

Does Black Diamond give you the munchies?

Yes. 'Hungry' is one of Leafly's top three reported effects for Black Diamond.

How long does Black Diamond take to flower?

About 8–10 weeks. Leafly lists 63–72 days, SeedFinder 8–9 weeks, and GrowDiaries growers report just under 60 days.

Where can I buy Black Diamond THCA flower online?

Black Diamond isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. The closest match is Blueberry Pancakes THCA Flower — an indica-dominant Slurricane × Purple Panty Dropper with a blueberry–grape jam nose and a relaxing evening body, from $24, third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75.
