Pink Kush Strain

Pink Kush Strain: The OG Kush Cut That Became Canada's Signature Bud

The Pink Kush strain is an indica-dominant hybrid widely described as a cut or close relative of OG Kush, named for the pink-tinged hairs on its frosty green buds. It smells like sweet vanilla and flowers over earthy kush, and it delivers a euphoric start that sinks into heavy, full-body relaxation. In British Columbia it is the strain — for years the default "BC bud" on legacy and legal shelves alike. It fits the sweet, relaxing corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also a strain with more stories than paperwork. Nobody has a breeder's receipt for the BC cut, sources disagree on how indica it is and how long it flowers, and the potency numbers range from the high teens to the 30s depending on who's counting. Below: what's actually documented about its lineage, why Canada adopted it, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

A 360° look at Pink Kush's lime-to-forest-green buds and pink-tinged pistils.

Pink Kush Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. Leafly calls it indica-dominant, AllBud puts it at 90% indica, and Barney's Farm sells its seed version as 100% indica. Weedmaps simply lists "hybrid."
  • Ancestry: OG Kush is the only parent any major database names. Leafly lists OG Kush as its parent; AllBud says it is "possibly an offspring" of OG Kush; the Ontario Cannabis Store says it is "widely believed to be an offspring or relative" of it.
  • Deeper roots: OG Kush traces back toward Hindu Kush, the Himalayan landrace family that also gave us Afghan Kush — which is where Pink Kush's short, dense, resinous build comes from.
  • Breeder: None credited for the original BC cut. Barney's Farm of Amsterdam sells a feminized Pink Kush it describes as a "highly regarded relative of OG Kush," without publishing the full cross.
  • THC / CBD: Leafly lists 19% THC and about 1% CBG; CBD is consistently under 1–2%.
  • Aliases: Pink OG and Sedamen, per Leafly. Known descendants include Pink Gelato and Pink Acai.

Where did Pink Kush come from? Three competing stories

The lineage is one of the most-argued in cannabis, so here's each version and who tells it:

  • The BC clone story. In Leafly's 2020 feature "Why is Pink Kush such a big deal in Canada?", Kyp Rowe of Shelter Brands says that "as the Kush craze hit the West Coast of the US, there were a lot of stories stating one of these OG cuts made it up to BC" — in the mid-to-late 2000s — where it was cloned and spread fast because it sold so well.
  • The Amsterdam story. The Ontario Cannabis Store notes that "popular lore" has Pink Kush "first bred in Amsterdam before reaching North America." Barney's Farm, an Amsterdam seed company, does sell a Pink Kush line — which may be part of how that story spread.
  • The OG phenotype story. Many growers simply treat it as an OG Kush phenotype that throws pink pistils. Leafly's news feature calls OG Kush "a generally agreed upon close relative—if not direct parent—of Pink Kush."

What all three agree on: OG Kush is in there, and the strain's fame was built in British Columbia, not by a single named breeder.

Why is it called Pink Kush?

The name comes from the pistils. Leafly describes "pink hairs [that] burst from bright green buds barely visible under a blanket of sugar-like trichomes." The pink is subtle — more blush than neon — and some batches lean purple instead. Pink Kush has no relation to Pink Runtz; the shared word is about color, not genetics.

Why Canada loves it

Pink Kush is a far bigger name north of the border. Leafly reported it as the second-most-searched strain among its Canadian readers, right behind Blue Dream, while its U.S. search popularity "sinks into the hundreds." Retail-data firm Headset found it climbed from the number-ten spot in March 2019 to number one in B.C. cannabis sales by October 2019. As Rowe put it: "It was Pink Kush, then all the rest." Industry voices in the same feature credit its consistency — a known, reliable effect batch after batch.

Pink Kush Terpene Profile

Leafly lists myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by limonene and caryophyllene; the Ontario Cannabis Store and Canadian retailers name the same three. Some Canadian retailers list caryophyllene first instead — a reminder that the terpene order shifts with the grower. Caryophyllene is notable in its own right: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Myrcene — earthy, musky, heavy body

Limonene — sweet citrus lift

Caryophyllene — pepper, kush spice

Linalool — floral, lavender-like

Typical relative profile for Pink Kush — myrcene-led per Leafly. Some Canadian retailers list caryophyllene first; some guides also list floral linalool in smaller amounts.

  • Myrcene: Earthy and musky — the classic Kush terpene and a big part of why Pink Kush reads as heavy and body-focused.
  • Limonene: The sweet citrus edge behind the euphoric onset; one Aurora Cannabis expert described "an earthy pine aroma with hints of citrus."
  • Caryophyllene: Peppery, spicy kush backbone from the OG side, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
  • Linalool: Listed by some guides as a smaller floral note — it lines up with the rose and flower flavors reviewers keep mentioning.

The vanilla that defines Pink Kush isn't one terpene — it's the overall blend, and it's what separates a true Pink Kush from a plain OG.

Appearance

Pink Kush is compact Kush flower: dense, golf-ball to spade-shaped buds in lime to forest green, wrapped in thick white trichome frost and threaded with pinkish-orange pistils. The "pink" is in the hairs and sometimes a faint blush on the sugar leaves; cooler grows can push lavender or purple tones. The Ontario Cannabis Store describes dark green buds that "may feature pink or purple pistils," and Weedmaps notes deep purple leaves on some cuts. It breaks up sticky and resinous — this is not a fluffy strain.

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar and the first hit is sweet: vanilla, candy and flowers. Leafly lists the top flavors as rose, flowery and sweet, and describes "a sweet vanilla and candy perfume." On Weedmaps, vanilla is the most-reported flavor (about 38%), ahead of sweet and flowery. Break a bud and the OG side shows up — earth, pepper and a light gas. The inhale is smooth and sugary; the exhale is earthy kush with a creamy vanilla finish. Some Canadian batches add notes of white pepper, orange, butterscotch and coffee.

Recreational Effects

Pink Kush starts with a warm, euphoric lift and then gets heavy. On Leafly, where it has thousands of reviews, the most-reported effects are:

  • Relaxed: the headline effect — a deep, full-body calm.
  • Sleepy: the reason it's known as an evening and bedtime strain. Rowe called it a "night-time knockout."
  • Hungry: a strong appetite kick, so stock the kitchen first.
  • Euphoric and happy: the mood lift in the first stretch, before the body takes over.
  • Talkative and giggly: mostly at low doses, early in the session.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a warm head change and a mood lift.
  • 15–45 minutes: the body high arrives — heavy limbs, loose shoulders, a slow, calm mind.
  • 1–3 hours: a long, sedating settle. At higher doses, expect the couch, the snacks and then sleep.

Pink Kush is not a get-things-done strain. Plan it for the end of the day.

How Strong Is Pink Kush?

Pink Kush has a reputation as a heavy hitter, but the numbers depend on who you ask:

  • Leafly: 19% THC, about 1% CBG.
  • AllBud: around 20% THC, under 1% CBD.
  • Weedmaps: 18–28% THC.
  • Leafly's Canada feature: "anywhere between 20% to 30%."
  • Ontario Cannabis Store: products on its shelf labeled in the 23–35% range.

So is Pink Kush strong? Yes — a well-grown batch sits comfortably above 20% THC, and the effect is heavier than the number suggests because of its myrcene-rich, sedating profile. But the spread tells you most of the variation is the grower and the batch, not the name. The 30%-plus labels are top-end lots, not the norm.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Pink Kush batch against the 19–30% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Pink Kush vs Similar Strains

  • vs OG Kush: the parent or close relative. OG Kush is gassier, more lemon-pine and a bit more heady; Pink Kush is sweeter, more floral-vanilla and heavier in the body.
  • vs Bubba Kush: both are sedating evening Kush strains. Bubba Kush leans coffee, chocolate and hash; Pink Kush leans sweet and floral.
  • vs Master Kush and Afghan Kush: older, earthier, hashier Kush lines. Pink Kush is the sweeter, more modern-tasting cousin.
  • vs Granddaddy Purple: another heavy, sleepy indica with color. GDP is grape-berry and purple; Pink Kush is vanilla-floral and green with pink hairs.
  • vs Cosmic Runtz: a Runtz-family, indica-leaning selection on our shelf — candy-sweet where Pink Kush is vanilla-sweet, with a similar relaxed finish. It's the closest match we carry.

Who Pink Kush Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: evening smokers, anyone who wants to unwind after work, fans of sweet and floral flavors, and people who like a strain that feels the same batch to batch.

Poor fit: daytime productivity, social plans that need energy, or brand-new users at high doses. If you want something sweet but brighter, Lemon Cherry Gelato is the livelier option on our shelf.

How to Use Pink Kush THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the vanilla and flowers. Around 350–375°F keeps the sweet top notes; 390–410°F brings out the heavier, sleepier side.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — the body effect builds after the first lift. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. If you're using it for the evening, take it an hour or so before you want to wind down. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (about 38%).
  • Pain: about 33% of reviewers, consistent with its heavy body effect.
  • Anxiety: about 29% report help — though "anxious" also shows up among its negatives, so dose matters.
  • Sleep and appetite: insomnia and appetite loss are also commonly reported, in line with its sleepy, hungry reputation.

Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly.
  • Anxiety — less common than with heady strains, but reported, especially at high doses or low tolerance.
  • Heavy sedation and the munchies — the point for some, a problem if you have plans.

Is Pink Kush good for sleep? Many consumers use it that way — sleepy is one of its top three reported effects. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Pink Kush Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Vanilla on the nose. A real Pink Kush smells sweet and floral first. If it's pure fuel and lemon with no sweetness, it's probably a different OG.
  • Pink in the hairs, not dye in the name. Look for pinkish-orange pistils under heavy frost. The color is subtle; don't expect bright pink buds.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Density and resin. It should be tight and sticky; airy, loose buds suggest a weak grow.
  • A proper cure — hay or grass smell means it was rushed, and it buries the vanilla.

Growing Pink Kush

Pink Kush is a short, stocky, resinous plant that rewards a controlled environment. The main risk is its dense buds, which hold moisture.

  • Flowering: sources split — about 8–9 weeks (Barney's Farm lists 55–65 days; Weedmaps 8–9 weeks) versus 10–11 weeks on Leafly and 10–12 on the Ontario Cannabis Store.
  • Yield: roughly 600–700 g/m² indoors, per Barney's Farm, Weedmaps and the OCS.
  • Height: compact — about 100–120 cm indoors, often under a meter.
  • Climate: warm and dry. The OCS suggests 21–27°C days and humidity below 40% in late flower; Leafly says it needs a dry outdoor climate and grows best large, not cramped in pots.
  • Phenotypes: Leafly notes four — three with sativa influence and one more indica-like.
  • Watch for: bud rot. Keep airflow strong and defoliate moderately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pink Kush indica or sativa?

Pink Kush is an indica-dominant hybrid. Leafly lists it as indica-dominant, AllBud as 90% indica, and Barney's Farm sells its seed version as 100% indica. Either way, its effects are heavy, relaxing and best suited to the evening.

How strong is Pink Kush?

Leafly lists 19% THC, AllBud around 20% and Weedmaps 18–28%, while Leafly's Canada feature puts it between 20% and 30%. It's a strong strain, and its sedating terpene profile makes it feel heavier than the number alone suggests.

What is Pink Kush a cross of?

No one has documented an exact cross. Pink Kush is widely described as an OG Kush cut or close relative — Leafly lists OG Kush as its parent — with roots that trace back to Hindu Kush. Barney's Farm sells a seed version it calls a relative of OG Kush.

Why is it called Pink Kush?

For its pink-tinged pistils. The hairs on its green, frosty buds show a pinkish hue, and some batches lean purple.

What does Pink Kush taste like?

Sweet vanilla, candy and flowers on the inhale, with earthy kush and pepper on the exhale. Leafly lists rose, flowery and sweet as its top flavors.

What does Pink Kush do to you?

Consumers most often report feeling relaxed, sleepy and hungry, after a short euphoric lift. It's a body-heavy strain and is usually saved for the evening.

Is Pink Kush good for sleep?

Many consumers use it at night — sleepy is one of its top three reported effects on Leafly, and one Canadian industry figure called it a 'night-time knockout.' Individual responses vary.

Is Pink Kush good for anxiety?

It's mixed. About 29% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but 'anxious' also appears among its reported negatives. Low doses are the safer approach.

Why is Pink Kush so popular in Canada?

It became British Columbia's signature bud after an OG Kush cut reportedly reached BC in the mid-to-late 2000s and spread as a clone. Leafly found it was the second-most-searched strain among Canadian readers, and Headset data showed it hit number one in B.C. sales in October 2019.

Is Pink Kush the same as OG Kush?

Not quite. Pink Kush is widely considered an OG Kush cut or close relative, but it's sweeter, more floral-vanilla and heavier in the body than a typical gassy, lemon-pine OG Kush.

Is Pink Kush good for beginners?

It can be, at a low dose and in the evening. Take one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes — the body effect builds after the first lift.

How long does Pink Kush take to flower?

Sources disagree: Barney's Farm lists 55–65 days for its seed version, while Leafly says 10–11 weeks and the Ontario Cannabis Store 10–12 weeks. Plan for 8–12 weeks depending on the cut.
