Purple Octane Strain

Purple Octane Strain: Grape on Top, Gas Underneath

The Purple Octane strain is a Seed Junky Genetics hybrid — (Biscotti × Sherb BX1) × Jealousy F2 — that lives up to both halves of its name. The buds go deep purple, and the jar smells like sweet grape drink cut with diesel. The high leans indica: relaxed, tingly and, as the night goes on, sleepy. For dense, gassy evening flower, start with our THCA flower collection.

It's also a strain people mix up. One database calls it a phenotype of Hi-Octane, a completely different Cookies Fam cross. And because Seed Junky used the same three parents to make Permanent Marker, a lot of shoppers wonder whether the two are the same plant. They aren't — and below we walk through what the breeder-linked sources actually say, how the high unfolds, how strong it really tests, what's in the terpene panel, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

Purple Octane Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica-leaning hybrid. Leafly files it under indica and calls it an "indica hybrid" with "maximum-THC" effects; AllBud lists it as 70% indica / 30% sativa; Canada's Unit 15 and uncommon cannabis co. label it indica-dominant and 70/30.
  • Breeder: Seed Junky Genetics. SeedFinder credits the cross to JBeezy at Seed Junky. Leafly describes Seed Junky as a top breeder that went on to become a licensed grower.
  • Ancestry: (Biscotti × Sherb BX1) × Jealousy F2, per Leafly, SeedFinder, GrowDiaries and Ontario's OCS product listing.
  • THC: 23–24% on AllBud and GrowDiaries; 27–28% THCA on Canadian and lab-listed batches. Details in the potency section below.
  • CBD: AllBud and GrowDiaries list about 2%, which would be unusual for a modern dessert-gas cross. We couldn't find a lab result that backs it up, so treat it with caution.

The three parents

SeedFinder fills in the family tree. Every branch traces back to the Cookies-and-Gelato world, which is where the dense structure and heavy frost come from:

  • Biscotti — Gelato #25 × South Florida OG. SeedFinder notes its exact genetics are "highly debated." It brings the cookie-dough base and a little OG fuel.
  • Sherb BX1 — a backcross of Sunset Sherbert: Sunset Sherbert × (Sunset Sherbert × Animal Cookies BX2). This is the likely source of the purple color and the sweet berry side.
  • Jealousy F2 — Seed Junky's own Gelato #41 × Sherbet BX1, used here at the second filial generation. Jealousy is known for loud gas and resin.

Is Purple Octane the same as Permanent Marker?

No — but they're close cousins. Seed Junky built Permanent Marker from the same three ingredients; SeedFinder describes it as a three-way cross of Biscotti S1, Sherb BX and a third-generation Jealousy cut. Purple Octane uses Jealousy F2 and a different arrangement of the cross. The clearest proof they're separate plants: Ohms Seeds crossed them together to make a strain called Chad Special (Purple Octane × Permanent Marker). In the jar, Permanent Marker leans floral, candy and marker-ink gas; Purple Octane leans grape and diesel. No source we found says they came out of the same seed run, so "same family, different selections" is as far as the evidence goes.

The Hi-Octane mix-up

AllBud's description says Purple Octane is "a phenotype of the classic Hi-Octane strain," while a user review on the same page gives the Seed Junky pedigree. Hi-Octane is Cookies Fam's Sunset Sherbert × Octane — covered on our High Octane strain page. The two share Sunset Sherbert ancestry and a gassy name, which probably explains the confusion, but Leafly, SeedFinder, GrowDiaries and the licensed producers all list Purple Octane as Seed Junky's Biscotti × Sherb BX1 × Jealousy cross. We go with the majority. Why "Octane"? Most likely the fuel nose, but we couldn't find Seed Junky explaining the name.

Purple Octane's offspring

SeedFinder lists six direct descendants: Offensive Selections' Black Ice (× Hellcat) and Purple Panties (× Pink Lady), Ohms Seeds' Chad Special (× Permanent Marker), Shuga Seeds' Cromo (× Randylosa), ThugPug Genetics' Peanut Butter Octane (× Peanut Butter Breath) and In House Genetics' Vibranium (× Platinum). That a breeder as selective as ThugPug picked it up says something about its resin and structure.

Purple Octane Terpene Profile

Leafly doesn't list terpenes for Purple Octane. The best data we found is a lab-style panel for one batch sold under the Roll One brand: beta-caryophyllene 0.67%, limonene 0.35%, linalool 0.30%, beta-myrcene 0.26%, humulene 0.20%, bisabolol 0.10%, and a trace of pinene. Canada's Unit 15 lists alpha-pinene, beta-caryophyllene, beta-myrcene, linalool and ocimene without percentages, and SeedFinder's description names linalool, pinene, humulene and myrcene. Caryophyllene, the clear leader, has real research behind it: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, the diesel bite

Limonene — sweet citrus lift

Linalool — lavender, floral calm

Myrcene — earthy, ripe fruit, body weight

Humulene — woody, herbal dryness

Relative profile from ONE batch's published lab listing (Roll One brand: caryophyllene 0.67%, limonene 0.35%, linalool 0.30%, myrcene 0.26%, humulene 0.20%) — measured, but a single batch, not a strain average.

  • Caryophyllene: The spicy, peppery backbone — it's a big part of the "diesel bite" producers describe on the exhale, and it's typical of the Gelato and Cookies families.
  • Limonene: Sweet citrus that lifts the grape and keeps the first few minutes of the high in a good mood.
  • Linalool: Lavender and floral notes — uncommon Cannabis Co. mentions "hints of lavender" — and the terpene most associated with calm. A high linalool share fits Purple Octane's sleepy reputation.
  • Myrcene and humulene: Earthy fruit and woody dryness that round out the base.

No single terpene makes "grape." That note comes from the whole blend — linalool's floral sweetness, myrcene's ripe fruit and a set of minor compounds — sitting on top of caryophyllene's pepper and the sulfur-style gas that Jealousy-line plants are known for.

Appearance

This is the strain's calling card. AllBud describes small, rounded forest-green nugs with deep purple undertones, thin light-orange hairs and "a frosty thick coating" of purple-tinted white trichomes "dripping with sweet sticky resin." Leafly just calls the look "deep purple," and its reviewers keep coming back to dense, chunky, glistening buds and strong bag appeal. Unit 15's Canadian batch is described as dark green with purple hues. Expect anything from mostly purple to green-with-purple-patches depending on the cut and how cool the grow ran late in flower.

Aroma and Flavor

Open the jar and grape hits first — sweet, almost like grape soda — then a sharp layer of diesel and petrol underneath. Leafly lists the flavors as chemical, grape and diesel, and one reviewer compares the taste to a strong grape drink. AllBud's flavor tags read berry, diesel, fruity, grape, spicy and sweet, with blueberry, earthy and gas in the aroma. Producers fill in the rest: Unit 15 describes a "pungent scent of petrol" with grape and strawberry, and a creamy, nutty smoke; uncommon Cannabis Co. calls it sweet grape and earth with lavender and pine, finishing thick and creamy with spice and "a diesel bite."

That grape-over-gas balance is the whole appeal. If you've had Grape Gas or a classic like Granddaddy Purple, Purple Octane sits somewhere between — sweeter than pure gas, gassier than old-school purple.

Recreational Effects

Purple Octane is an evening strain. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.7 rating from 82 reviews, the top-reported effects are:

  • Relaxed: the headline. Reviewers describe a warm, body-wrapping calm and a "zen" feeling.
  • Sleepy: several reviewers use it for sleep — though one notes it's sleepy without being overly sedating.
  • Tingly: a light body buzz that AllBud also lists.
  • Euphoric and happy: AllBud adds euphoria, happiness and an uplifted start, and one Leafly reviewer calls it a "very strong head high, very relaxing."
  • Creeper: AllBud's reviewers tag it as one — the full weight builds after the first few minutes.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First few minutes: a happy, euphoric lift in the head — strong enough that some reviewers mention it first.
  • 15–60 minutes: the peak, as the tingly, relaxed body high settles in. This is the "sit on the couch and veg" stretch one reviewer describes.
  • 1–3 hours: a long, calm fade that tends toward sleep, especially at higher doses.

No source we found gives measured onset or duration times — those ranges are typical for smoked flower, not Purple Octane-specific data. One Leafly reviewer found their batch weak and "more like CBN" than THC, a reminder that grower and freshness matter as much as the name.

How Strong Is Purple Octane?

Strong. The published numbers:

  • AllBud and GrowDiaries: 23–24% THC.
  • SeedFinder's description: typically around 25% THC.
  • uncommon cannabis co. (Canada): sold as "THC27" — 27% THC.
  • Roll One batch listing: 27.93% THCA and 0.14% delta-9 THC.
  • Unit 15 (Ontario OCS listing): a labeled range of 26–32% THC.

JointCommerce's 18–25% range doesn't cite a source. Realistically, a well-grown cut lands in the mid-to-high 20s, which puts Purple Octane well above average. Leafly's "maximum-THC" wording fits — and Leafly gives no number of its own.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Purple Octane against the 23–32% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Seed Junky Genetics and the Purple Octane Story

Seed Junky Genetics is the breeder behind some of the most copied cuts of the last decade — Jealousy, Permanent Marker and a long list of Gelato and Sherbet crosses. Leafly describes the outfit as a top breeder that became a licensed grower, and SeedFinder credits Purple Octane specifically to JBeezy. The Purple Octane idea, per Leafly, was to push purple color and gas from the GSC and Gelato families into one plant. We couldn't find a verified release year.

The strain has traveled. In California, BRITE sells Purple Octane pre-rolls through Weedmaps delivery menus, and Daze Off has listed it in eighths. In Canada, Unit 15, uncommon cannabis co., Roll One and Pura Vida (as live resin) have all carried it. SeedFinder says feminized seeds have run low, while clones are still offered by Kaprikorn in Lowell, Oregon.

Purple Octane vs Similar Strains

  • vs Permanent Marker: the closest relative and our featured in-stock pick. Same Biscotti, Sherb BX and Jealousy parents, the same dense, frosty buds and heavy gas. The difference: Permanent Marker smells like floral candy and marker ink, Purple Octane like grape and diesel, and Permanent Marker is a touch more balanced where Purple Octane slides toward sleep.
  • vs Jealousy: the gas parent. Jealousy is more balanced and social; Purple Octane adds grape and a heavier, sleepier finish.
  • vs High Octane: a different strain entirely, despite AllBud's phenotype claim. Hi-Octane is Cookies Fam's Sunset Sherbert × Octane, with lemon-diesel and butter flavors.
  • vs Granddaddy Purple: the old-school grape indica. GDP is sweeter and more berry; Purple Octane adds fuel and modern potency.
  • vs Grape Gas: the same grape-meets-fuel lane from a different family. Try both if that combination is your thing.
  • vs Purple Punch: dessert-sweet grape and blueberry with a sleepy body, but without Purple Octane's diesel edge.

Who Purple Octane Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: evening smokers, people winding down after work, anyone who wants a heavy body high to help with sleep, and gas fans who like a sweet fruit top note.

Poor fit: daytime productivity sessions, low-tolerance beginners (the potency is real), and people prone to THC anxiety — "anxious" is one of Leafly's listed negatives. For the closest gas-forward Seed Junky flower on our shelf, Permanent Marker is the pick, from $65 for a half ounce. Want it even heavier? Mule Fuel is our straight-gas option.

How to Use Purple Octane THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the grape before the gas takes over. Around 350–380°F keeps the fruit and linalool bright; 390–410°F brings out caryophyllene's pepper and a heavier body feel.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — this one creeps. Regular users usually find two or three hits enough to get the full relaxed, sleepy arc. With rosin, start with a rice-grain-sized dab. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Anxiety: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 38% of reviewers) — though "anxious" is also a listed negative, so keep the dose low.
  • Pain: about 28% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud lists chronic pain, cramps and muscle spasms.
  • Stress: about 26% of Leafly reviewers.
  • Sleep: AllBud lists insomnia, and several Leafly reviewers use it at bedtime.
  • Low mood: AllBud lists depression, PTSD and mood swings; one Leafly reviewer reports help with PTSD and depression.

Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the usual pair, both listed on Leafly.
  • Anxiety — a listed negative, most likely at high doses or low tolerance.
  • Dizziness and couch-lock — reported by individual reviewers.
  • Drowsiness — the point for most people, but it means no driving and no big plans afterward.

Is Purple Octane good for sleep? For most people, yes — it's one of its main uses. Talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Purple Octane Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask for the breeder. A Seed Junky Genetics cut — (Biscotti × Sherb BX1) × Jealousy F2 — is the documented one. If the seller says "Hi-Octane pheno," ask more questions.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Mid-to-high 20s is believable; 35%+ without paperwork is marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Grape and gas. Real Purple Octane has both. Grape with no fuel, or fuel with no fruit, may be a different cut or old stock.
  • Purple you can see, frost you can feel — dense, chunky buds with heavy, sticky trichomes. Purple color alone doesn't mean quality, but thin, wispy buds are a red flag.
  • A clean trim and proper cure — one AllBud reviewer flagged leafy trim; hay or grass smell means it was rushed.

Growing Purple Octane

Purple Octane is a grower's strain more than a beginner's one. Here's what the sources report:

  • Flowering: about 8–9 weeks, per GrowDiaries.
  • Feeding: SeedFinder notes growers report a heavy feeding requirement.
  • Yield: modest, with high-quality flowers, per SeedFinder. JointCommerce's 450–500 g/m² figure is unsourced.
  • Stretch: SeedFinder reports notable stretch — top early and use low-stress training or a screen to keep the canopy even.
  • Smell: the aroma shows up about two weeks into bloom, so plan carbon filtration early.
  • Color: like most purple cultivars, cooler night temperatures late in flower tend to bring out the color.
  • Getting it: SeedFinder says Seed Junky's feminized seeds have run low; clones are available from Kaprikorn in Oregon.

Purple Octane is an indica-leaning hybrid. Leafly lists it as indica, and AllBud and Canadian producers describe it as about 70% indica, 30% sativa. Most people use it in the evening.

What is Purple Octane a cross of?

Seed Junky Genetics bred it from (Biscotti × Sherb BX1) × Jealousy F2, per Leafly, SeedFinder and GrowDiaries.

Who bred Purple Octane?

Seed Junky Genetics. SeedFinder credits JBeezy at Seed Junky with the cross.

Is Purple Octane the same as Permanent Marker?

Is Purple Octane a phenotype of Hi-Octane?

AllBud says so, but the breeder-linked sources disagree. Hi-Octane is Cookies Fam's Sunset Sherbert × Octane; Leafly, SeedFinder and GrowDiaries list Purple Octane as Seed Junky's Biscotti × Sherb BX1 × Jealousy F2.

How strong is Purple Octane?

AllBud and GrowDiaries list 23–24% THC; Canadian batches have been sold at 27% THC and 27.93% THCA, and one producer's label range runs 26–32%. That's well above average.

What does Purple Octane taste like?

Sweet grape first, then diesel and petrol. Reviewers and producers add berry, cream, spice, lavender and pine.

What are the effects of Purple Octane?

Leafly reviewers report relaxed, sleepy and tingly effects; AllBud adds euphoric, happy and a creeping body high.

What terpenes are in Purple Octane?

One batch's lab listing showed beta-caryophyllene 0.67%, limonene 0.35%, linalool 0.30%, myrcene 0.26% and humulene 0.20%. Other producers list pinene and ocimene.

Is Purple Octane good for sleep?

For most people, yes. Leafly lists sleepy as a top effect and several reviewers use it at bedtime, though one says it isn't overly sedating.

Why is Purple Octane purple?

The color likely comes through the Sherbert and Gelato side of the family, and cool late-flower temperatures bring it out. AllBud describes deep purple undertones and purple-tinted trichomes.

How long does Purple Octane take to flower?

About 8–9 weeks, per GrowDiaries. SeedFinder notes heavy feeding, notable stretch and modest yields.

Where can I buy Purple Octane THCA flower online?

Purple Octane isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. Our closest pick is Permanent Marker THCA Flower — Seed Junky genetics from the same Biscotti, Sherb BX and Jealousy parents, from $65, third-party lab tested. It runs floral-candy gas rather than grape. Add a pre-roll to ship free over $75.
