High Octane Strain: One Name, Two Gas-Heavy Strains
The High Octane strain is really two strains. The older one is High Octane OG, a clone-only cut of OG Kush with sour lemon, pine and fuel on the nose and a heavy, couch-friendly body high. The newer one is Hi-Octane from Cookies Fam — Sunset Sherbet crossed with a gassy OG called Octane — which trades some of that weight for a creamy, lemon-diesel finish. Both get sold simply as "High Octane," both lean relaxing, and both show up in the family trees of modern gas strains like Jet Fuel Gelato. They sit in the gassy, evening corner of our THCA flower collection.
Even the big strain databases split on this. AllBud's top-ranking "High Octane" page is High Octane OG; Leafly's is Cookies' Hi-Octane; Weedmaps explicitly warns that its High Octane "is not High Octane OG." Below: which is which, where each lineage claim comes from, what each smells and feels like, how strong they are, the crosses they've produced, and how to judge a bag.

Quick Facts
In short: Two strains share the name: High Octane OG, a clone-only OG Kush cut (sour lemon, pine, gas, heavy body), and Cookies Fam's Hi-Octane, Sunset Sherbet × Octane (diesel, lemon, creamy finish, mellow and sleepy). Both read relaxing and evening-friendly, and both are popular breeding parents.
- Type: Hybrid — AllBud lists both as 50/50; SeedFinder calls High Octane OG mostly indica. See indica vs sativa
- High Octane OG: Clone-only OG Kush cut (SeedFinder) — AllBud instead lists Chemdawg × Lemon Thai × Hindu Kush
- Hi-Octane (Cookies): Sunset Sherbet × Octane, from Cookies Fam
- THC: High Octane OG 19–26% (AllBud); Hi-Octane 22% (Leafly), 18–25% (Weedmaps)
- Dominant terpene: Limonene for Hi-Octane (Leafly), with caryophyllene and myrcene
- Flavor: Gas · sour lemon · pine · spicy herbs (OG) — diesel · lemon · butter-cream (Hi-Octane)
- Best for: Evening, winding down, appetite, sleep
- Aliases: High Octane Kush, Heirloom OG (OG); Hi-Octane, High-Octane, Hio (Cookies)

Start by figuring out which High Octane is in the jar. Here's what the sources say about each.
High Octane OG — the clone-only OG cut
- Type: AllBud lists it as a 50/50 hybrid (one of its reviewers calls it "100% indica"); SeedFinder calls it mostly indica. The reported effects — sedating, couch-lock — read indica.
- Lineage, version 1 (SeedFinder): an OG Kush clone, listed under "Clone Only Strains." The breeder notes call it "Nigel's OG" and an "unknown OG Kush clone," and SeedFinder traces it through the Heirloom OG Kush cut back to an Emerald Triangle plant crossed with Hindu Kush.
- Lineage, version 2 (AllBud): a three-way cross of Chemdawg, Lemon Thai and Hindu Kush. That is the classic OG Kush origin theory, which may be why the two databases look different on paper while describing the same OG-family plant.
- Breeder: none confirmed. SeedFinder files it as a clone-only strain with no named breeder.
- Aliases: High Octane, High Octane Kush (AllBud); Heirloom OG, Heirloom Kush (SeedFinder).
- Seeds: the original is clone-only. Dankmatter Genetics sells a High Octane OG BX1 — High Octane OG backcrossed onto a Florida Crippy line, per SeedFinder.
Hi-Octane — the Cookies Fam hybrid
- Lineage: Leafly lists Sunset Sherbet × Octane, bred by Cookies Fam. SeedFinder agrees, marking it "probably," and lists Octane itself as probably Nepali OG Kush (a Fire OG cut) × Frisco OG — so the "gas" side is OG-family too, close to Fire OG.
- The Sherbet side: Sunset Sherbet is Girl Scout Cookies × Pink Panties — the source of Hi-Octane's creamy, fruity finish.
- A listing conflict: Weedmaps's description agrees with Sunset Sherbet × Octane, but its parents box lists Sherbet × OG Kush Breath. We go with the breeder-credited Sunset Sherbet × Octane.
- Aliases: High Octane, High-Octane, Hio.
- Seeds: SeedFinder says it has never been released as feminized seeds — it circulates as clones.
Other strains with "High Octane" in the name
- Gelato High Octane: Mohave Cannabis Co.'s Gelato × High Octane OG, about 25% THC on Leafly.
- Triangle Octane: Seed Junky Genetics' High Octane × Triangle Kush.
- Emerald Smoke "High Octane": a Canadian brand's flower that names no parents. It's a product name, not a defined strain.
- Sunset Sherbet × High Octane: sold by Theory Wellness in Massachusetts and Maine. That's the same recipe as Cookies' Hi-Octane, sold under its parents' names.
High Octane Terpene Profile
Leafly lists limonene as Hi-Octane's dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and myrcene. No source publishes a lab-backed terpene breakdown for High Octane OG, but its sour-lemon, pine and peppery-herb notes point to the same trio plus pinene — the four terpenes Emerald Smoke lists for its High Octane flower. Caryophyllene is worth knowing on its own: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Limonene — lemon, sour citrus lift
Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, the gas edge
Myrcene — earthy, heavy body
Pinene — pine, wet wood
Typical relative profile — limonene-led per Leafly's Hi-Octane listing. High Octane OG cuts often read gassier and more myrcene-heavy; check the batch COA.
- Limonene: The sour-lemon top note both High Octanes share, and part of the brief mood lift at onset.
- Caryophyllene: Pepper and spice — the "heavy spicy herbal exhale" AllBud describes on the OG — and the one common terpene that acts directly on CB2 receptors.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky, and the terpene most associated with the heavy, sleepy body both strains are known for.
- Pinene: Pine and wet wood, more noticeable on High Octane OG.
The "gas" itself isn't a single terpene. It's the OG family's mix of sulfur compounds and spice terpenes — the same chemistry behind SFV OG and Fire OG.
Appearance
High Octane OG looks like an OG: AllBud describes popcorn-shaped, minty green nugs with dark undertones, sparse orange hairs and a thick coat of chunky white trichomes, and its reviewers mention how dense the buds are. Cookies' Hi-Octane is rounder — AllBud describes dense olive-green nugs with forest-green undertones, long thin orange hairs and sticky resin — and Weedmaps notes heavy resin production, one reason it gets used so often in breeding.
Aroma and Flavor
The name is about the gas, and both deliver it, just differently.
- High Octane OG: pungent and sour. AllBud describes a "classic pungent sour lemon flavor with a heavy spicy herbal exhale," over spicy herbs, pine and damp earth. It's the old-school OG nose: lemon-pledge, fuel and forest floor.
- Hi-Octane (Cookies): gas up front with a softer landing. Leafly's flavor tags are butter, diesel and lemon, and it describes a "smooth, creamy, and floral finish on the exhale." AllBud adds berry and sweet fruit from the Sherbet side. Weedmaps puts it best: "Sherbert brings the sugar. Octane brings the fumes."
If your jar smells only of lemon and pine, it's probably the OG. If there's cream or berry under the diesel, it's probably the Cookies cut. One Leafly reviewer noted their Hi-Octane wasn't especially gassy, so the gas level varies by grower.
Recreational Effects
Both High Octanes are evening strains. Here's how they compare:
- High Octane OG — heavy and sedating. AllBud says the high starts a few minutes after use with a mild, happy, tingly lift, then turns into strong physical sedation and couch-lock that "can keep you glued in place for hours." Its tags: body high, relaxing, sleepy, tingly, uplifting.
- Hi-Octane — mellow and sleepy. Leafly's most-reported effects are hungry, happy and relaxed; reviewers call it mellow, say it sneaks up on them, and use it right before bed. Weedmaps describes a creative, euphoric opening that shifts into a long, relaxing body high.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a quick, happy head change, sometimes with a tingle. The OG hits faster; the Cookies cut can creep.
- 15–60 minutes: the body takes over — heavy limbs, a calm mind and, for many people, the munchies.
- 1–3 hours: a long, slow settle. At higher doses, especially with the OG, plan on staying put.
Either way, don't plan anything physical. One AllBud reviewer warns against it outright.

High Octane's dense, resinous buds break up easily in a brushed-steel grinder.

How Strong Is High Octane?
Strong, but not record-setting. The published numbers:
- High Octane OG: AllBud lists 19–26% THC; one reviewer reports their phenotype testing 23–26% THC, usually with 20–22% THCA.
- Hi-Octane (Cookies): Leafly lists 22% THC and 1% CBG; Weedmaps 18–25%; AllBud 19–24%. One Leafly reviewer reported a purchase labeled 25.98%.
- Gelato High Octane: about 25% on Leafly.
The name oversells the head high. One Leafly reviewer said Hi-Octane felt more mellow than they expected at 22%, and High Octane OG's strength is in the body, not the mind. If you want potency you can feel, the OG is the heavier of the two. Neither is a good first-time strain at a full dose.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of High Octane against the 18–26% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
High Octane OG vs Hi-Octane: Which One Do You Want?
- Pick High Octane OG for a classic OG: sour lemon, pine and fuel, with heavy sedation for the end of the night.
- Pick Hi-Octane for gas with a dessert finish: diesel and lemon over cream, and a mellower, sleepy, hungry high.
Both are relaxing, gassy and evening-only. Menus often won't tell you which one they have, so ask, or go by the nose.
High Octane vs Similar Strains
- vs OG Kush: High Octane OG is an OG Kush cut, so expect the same lemon-pine-fuel profile with more weight. Hi-Octane is OG Kush filtered through Sherbet.
- vs Sunset Sherbet: Hi-Octane's sweet parent. Sherbet is fruitier and more social; Hi-Octane adds gas and a sleepier finish.
- vs Fire OG: the OG family behind the Octane parent, per SeedFinder. Fire OG is the sharper, more potent-feeling relative.
- vs Jet Fuel Gelato: High Octane's best-known grandchild — Compound Genetics' Gelato 45 × (High Octane × Jet Fuel). It keeps the diesel and adds Gelato cream and more energy. The same High Octane × Jet Fuel line runs through Pink Certz and Compound's Gelato 45 work.
- vs Mule Fuel: GMO Cookies × Lurch — loud, earthy gas and a heavy, indica-leaning body, like High Octane OG with a savory GMO twist instead of lemon. It's the closest match on our shelf.
Which High Octane is in the famous crosses?
This is where the name causes the most confusion. Leafly lists Cookies' Hi-Octane as a parent of Jet Fuel Gelato and Gas Cake. SeedFinder lists Gas Cake as a descendant of High Octane OG, and Canada's Pure Sunfarms describes Jet Fuel Gelato's other parent as "High Octane OG x Jet Fuel G6." Gelato High Octane is credited to High Octane OG. Unless a breeder says otherwise, treat "High Octane" in a lineage as unconfirmed. SeedFinder alone lists 16 direct High Octane OG descendants, including Octane Fire, MindFuel OG, Intimidator OG and Kool Grapes.
Who High Octane Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced smokers who love gas; evening and pre-bed sessions; anyone chasing appetite or a heavy body high.
Poor fit: daytime use, beginners at a full dose, or anyone who needs to stay productive. For an uplifting option on our shelf, try Strawberry 2.1, from $22.
How to Use High Octane THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: a good way to taste the lemon before the gas takes over. Around 350–370°F keeps the citrus bright; 390–410°F brings out the heavy OG body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small hit, then wait 15–30 minutes — the body side can creep. Regular users usually find two or three hits gets the full wind-down. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: about 30% of Leafly's Hi-Octane reviewers.
- Stress: about 25%.
- Pain: about 15% on Leafly; AllBud lists chronic pain, muscle spasms and cramps for High Octane OG.
- Insomnia: listed for both on AllBud, which fits their sleepy reputation.
- Nausea and appetite loss: listed for High Octane OG; "hungry" is a top Hi-Octane effect on Leafly.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth — Leafly's top negative for Hi-Octane. Dry eyes are common too.
- Heavy sedation and couch-lock — especially with High Octane OG, which AllBud says can keep you in place for hours.
- Anxiety or paranoia — reported for the Gelato High Octane cross and possible with any high-THC strain at large doses.
- Grogginess the next morning if you take a lot late at night.
Is High Octane good for sleep? Many users say yes — it's one of the more sedating gas strains. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
How to Judge a Good Bag of High Octane
- Ask which High Octane it is. OG or Cookies Hi-Octane? A good seller knows. A seller who doesn't know is a warning sign.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Real gas. Break a bud. It should smell like fuel and sour lemon, with cream on the Cookies cut. Faint or grassy means old or rushed.
- Density and frost: tight, heavy nugs with trichomes all the way through.
- A proper cure — the buds should snap a little at the stem, not crumble or bend wet.
Growing High Octane
Neither breeder publishes official flowering time, yield or height numbers, so be skeptical of any source that gives exact figures. What's documented:
- Availability: High Octane OG is clone-only; SeedFinder says Cookies' Hi-Octane has never been released as feminized seeds either. Seeds sold as "High Octane" are usually crosses or backcrosses, such as Dankmatter Genetics' High Octane OG BX1.
- Structure: Weedmaps describes Hi-Octane as a vigorous hybrid with moderate stretch. Some phenotypes stay compact while others stretch more.
- Resin and density: heavy resin and dense flowers; Weedmaps notes branch support may help late in bloom.
- OG habits: High Octane OG grows like the OG Kush family — expect the stretch and the finicky reputation OG cuts are known for.
- Indoors or out: SeedFinder lists both as suitable for indoor and outdoor growing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is High Octane indica or sativa?
It's a hybrid either way. AllBud lists both High Octane OG and Cookies' Hi-Octane as 50/50, while SeedFinder calls High Octane OG mostly indica. Both are relaxing, sleepy, evening-leaning strains in practice.
What is High Octane a cross of?
It depends which one. High Octane OG is a clone-only OG Kush cut per SeedFinder (AllBud lists it as Chemdawg × Lemon Thai × Hindu Kush). Cookies Fam's Hi-Octane is Sunset Sherbet × Octane, a gassy OG-family cut.
Is High Octane the same as High Octane OG?
No. Weedmaps says outright that its High Octane is not High Octane OG. High Octane OG is the older OG Kush clone; Hi-Octane (also sold as High Octane) is Cookies Fam's Sunset Sherbet × Octane.
Who bred the High Octane strain?
Cookies Fam bred Hi-Octane, per Leafly. High Octane OG has no confirmed breeder — SeedFinder lists it as a clone-only strain, with breeder notes calling it Nigel's OG.
How strong is High Octane?
High Octane OG lists at 19–26% THC on AllBud. Cookies' Hi-Octane lists at 22% on Leafly and 18–25% on Weedmaps. Both hit hardest in the body.
What does High Octane taste like?
High Octane OG tastes like sour lemon, pine and fuel with a spicy, herbal exhale. Hi-Octane is diesel and lemon with a buttery, creamy, floral finish from the Sherbet side.
What are the effects of High Octane?
Mostly relaxing and sleepy. High Octane OG brings heavy couch-lock after a brief happy lift; Hi-Octane's top Leafly effects are hungry, happy and relaxed.
Is High Octane good for sleep?
Many users say yes. Both versions are evening strains, and Leafly describes Hi-Octane as a good fit for winding down at bedtime.
Is High Octane good for anxiety?
About 30% of Leafly's Hi-Octane reviewers say it helps with anxiety. Any high-THC strain can cause anxiety at high doses, so start low.
What strains come from High Octane?
Jet Fuel Gelato, Gas Cake, Gelato High Octane, Triangle Octane and Octane Fire all list High Octane as a parent or ancestor. Sources disagree on whether that's the OG or the Cookies cut.
Is High Octane good for beginners?
Not at a full dose — it's heavy. Beginners should take one small hit and wait 15–30 minutes.
Can you buy High Octane seeds?
The originals circulate as clones. High Octane OG is clone-only and SeedFinder says Hi-Octane was never released as feminized seeds. Backcrosses like Dankmatter Genetics' High Octane OG BX1 exist.
Where can I buy High Octane THCA flower online?
