Sour Tangie Strain

Sour Tangie Strain: Tangerine Peel Meets Diesel Fuel

The Sour Tangie strain is a sativa-dominant cross of East Coast Sour Diesel and Tangie from DNA Genetics, the Amsterdam seed company behind some of the most famous Californian genetics of the last two decades. It smells like fuel poured over fresh tangerine peel, hits within minutes, and delivers an energetic, focused, talkative high that most people save for the morning or the middle of the day. It sits in the bright, daytime corner of our THCA flower collection conversation.

It's also one of the more inconsistent strains on the market. Sour Tangie was never fully stabilized, so jars lean either toward the Sour Diesel side or the Tangie side — and the published data on its type, potency and dominant terpene disagrees from source to source. Below: where it comes from, what the two phenotypes look like, what the numbers really say, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

A 360° look at Sour Tangie's frosty buds.

Quick Facts

In short: An East Coast Sour Diesel × Tangie cross from DNA Genetics — tangerine peel and diesel on the nose, a fast, energetic, focused head high, and a reputation as a true morning strain.

Sour Tangie Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Sativa-dominant. Leafly, AllBud and SeedFinder all list it around 80% sativa / 20% indica; at least one retailer guide says 70/30, and Weedmaps simply calls it a hybrid. Its effects read clearly sativa either way.
  • Ancestry: East Coast Sour Diesel × Tangie. Weedmaps describes the cross as a Sour Diesel female pollinated with Tangie pollen.
  • Breeder: DNA Genetics, founded in Amsterdam in 2004 by Don Morris and Aaron Yarkoni, per Leafly and Weedmaps. SeedFinder and CannaConnection list the seeds under Reserva Privada — the seed line the same founders run alongside DNA — so you'll see both names. They point to the same source.
  • THC: Leafly lists 18%; RedBilly 19–24%; AllBud 21–22%, with user-reported batches from 18% to 26.5%.
  • CBD: Negligible — 0% per Leafly, under 1% elsewhere.
  • Offspring: Leafly lists Citrus Punch and Bittersweet as Sour Tangie descendants.
  • Aliases: Leafly's page carries the alias "Sunva" — but Leafly uses the same nickname for Tangie itself, so treat it with caution. On menus it's almost always just "Sour Tangie."

The parents: why this cross works

Sour Diesel — and its East Coast cut — is the benchmark for loud fuel and a racy, energetic head high. Tangie is the orange-scented sativa that revived the old Tangerine Dream-style citrus profile; Wikipedia notes it came out of Crockett Family Farms, which DNA Genetics acquired in 2019. Put them together and you get two of the loudest smells in cannabis in one jar, with neither backing down — RedBilly sums it up as "fuel over tangerine peel."

Two phenotypes: Sour-leaning vs Tangie-leaning

Leafly and Weedmaps both note that Sour Tangie expresses two distinct phenotypes:

  • Sour Diesel-leaning: gassier and more pungent, with the long, spear-like Sour D bud structure and a sharper, racier head.
  • Tangie-leaning: brighter, sweeter orange on the nose, often with the purple fade and orange hairs Tangie is known for, and a slightly friendlier, more euphoric feel.

That split explains why reviews of the "same" strain read so differently. If you like fuel, ask for the Sour pheno; if you want the orange, ask which way the cut leans before you buy.

Sour Tangie Terpene Profile

This is where the sources disagree most. Leafly's lab-tested data lists myrcene as the most abundant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and limonene. RedBilly puts limonene first with myrcene underneath. One retailer guide claims terpinolene dominates — the terpene behind the bright, almost floral citrus of Jack Herer and many Tangie descendants — but cites no lab. The honest answer: myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene are the consistent trio, and terpinolene shows up on some Tangie-leaning cuts. Check the COA on your batch.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Myrcene — earthy, herbal base

Limonene — tangerine and orange-peel brightness

Caryophyllene — pepper and diesel bite

Terpinolene — floral, fresh citrus on some cuts

Typical relative profile for Sour Tangie based on Leafly's lab data. Tangie-leaning phenotypes often read more limonene- and terpinolene-forward; Sour-leaning cuts more caryophyllene.

  • Myrcene: The most common terpene in cannabis — earthy and herbal. In Sour Tangie it sits under the citrus rather than dominating the nose.
  • Limonene: The tangerine and orange-peel note from the Tangie side, and a big part of the cheerful, upbeat onset.
  • Caryophyllene: Peppery and fuel-edged — the Sour Diesel bite on the exhale.
  • Terpinolene: Fresh, floral, piney citrus. It isn't always present in large amounts, but when it is, the jar smells closer to pure Tangie.

The "sour" isn't a single terpene — it's the diesel side's sulfur-and-fuel chemistry sitting on top of the citrus. That's why the Sour pheno smells so different from the Tangie pheno even with similar terpene numbers.

Appearance

Sour Tangie's look depends on the phenotype. AllBud describes medium, grape-shaped, dark olive-green nugs with pinkish undertones, purple hairs and a frosty, lavender-tinged trichome coat. Westword's Colorado review found the opposite end: large, fluffy, light-green buds shaped like footballs and fists, with the open calyxes of both parents. Weedmaps notes long, dense buds with wiry orange hairs, and growers describe a purple Tangie fade late in flower. Either way, a good batch is heavily frosted.

Aroma and Flavor

Crack a jar and the tangerine hits first — sweet, tart, sharp citrus — with diesel, rubber and skunk right behind it. Westword called the nose "more citrus than gas," with honeysuckle and sweet tangerine over a rubbery Diesel finish. Break a bud and the fuel gets louder.

The flavor follows: orange candy on the inhale, then a sour, tangy diesel bite on the exhale and a citrus aftertaste that lingers for minutes. Weedmaps' users tag the flavor as citrus (49%), orange (32%) and diesel (19%); SeedFinder lists tangerine, grapefruit and "acidic." Leafly reviewers describe it as "citrus, earthy, and diesel, in that order." Tangie-leaning cuts taste sweeter; Sour-leaning cuts are gassier and harsher.

Recreational Effects

Sour Tangie is a wake-up strain. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.5-star rating from more than 770 ratings, the most-reported effects are:

  • Energetic: the headline effect — a fast, clean jolt of motivation.
  • Focused: sharp and present, good for tasks and to-do lists.
  • Uplifted: a bright, optimistic mood rather than a heavy euphoria.
  • Creative and talkative: reviewers repeatedly mention social settings and projects.
  • Light body: AllBud notes a relaxing body feel that stops short of sedation.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First few minutes: a quick lift in the head — clearer, more alert, more motivated.
  • 15–60 minutes: the peak — upbeat, chatty and focused, with very little body weight.
  • Around 2–3 hours: a taper. Westword's reviewer noticed a distinct energy drop about two hours in, so plan your session around it.

Compared with its parents, Westword found Sour Tangie less intense than Tangie and less focusing than Sour Diesel, but more euphoric and relaxed than either. That balance is a big part of its appeal.

How Strong Is Sour Tangie?

Sour Tangie is solidly above average but not a record-setter. The published numbers:

  • Leafly: 18% THC, 0% CBD.
  • Secret Nature: 19–22% THC.
  • RedBilly: 19–24% THC, under 1% CBD.
  • AllBud: 21–22% on average, with user-reported batches from 18% to 26.5%.

What makes it feel strong isn't the number — it's the speed. Sour Tangie comes on in minutes and goes straight to the head, which can tip low-tolerance users into a racy, jittery place. Leafly reviewers who love it still describe it as "jittery and electrifying." Is Sour Tangie a good strain? By the numbers, yes: a 4.5-star Leafly rating over hundreds of reviews puts it among the better-liked daytime sativas.

Competition results are thinner than some marketing suggests. SeedFinder lists a 5th-place finish at the 2017 Emerald Cup (outdoor, Grownwell Farms) and 7th at the 2018 Karma Cup (hybrid, Seaway Valley Extracts). We could not verify claims of High Times Cannabis Cup wins for Sour Tangie itself.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Sour Tangie batch against the 18–24% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Sour Tangie vs Similar Strains

  • vs Tangie: the sweeter, more purely orange parent. Sour Tangie adds fuel and a little more body.
  • vs Sour Diesel and East Coast Sour Diesel: gassier, racier and more focused. Sour Tangie is friendlier and more euphoric.
  • vs Super Sour Diesel: a Sour Diesel relative that keeps the fuel front and center; Sour Tangie is the citrus take on that diesel energy.
  • vs Super Lemon Haze: lemon instead of tangerine, with Haze genetics behind it. Both are classic citrus morning strains.
  • vs Durban Poison: a pure sativa with similar clarity and drive, but earthier and less citrus-driven.
  • vs Permanent Marker: honestly, not a flavor match. Permanent Marker is a modern (Biscotti × Sherb Bx) × Jealousy hybrid with a loud chemical-gas nose and a heavier, indica-leaning body. We list it as our closest in-stock match for its potency and loud gas. If you want Sour Tangie's citrus and daytime lift, Dayglow Mousse is the better pick on our shelf; for the diesel side, try Mule Fuel.

Who Sour Tangie Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: daytime and morning smokers; anyone who wants motivation for chores, errands or creative work; social sessions; fans of citrus and fuel.

Poor fit: people prone to THC anxiety or a racing heart, and anyone looking for a sleep or pain-and-couch strain — Leafly reviewers who praise it for nearly everything still single out sleep as the exception. For an evening wind-down, Permanent Marker is the heavier option on our shelf.

How to Use Sour Tangie THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the tangerine. Around 340–360°F keeps the orange and floral notes; 375–395°F brings out the diesel and spice.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 10–15 minutes — Sour Tangie's fast, racy onset is easy to overshoot. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full energetic arc without the jitters. Use it before mid-afternoon if you want to sleep that night. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Low mood: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 34% of reviewers), in line with its uplifting effect.
  • Stress: about 32% of Leafly reviewers.
  • Anxiety: about 25% report help — but "anxious" is also one of its top negatives, so this is a strongly dose-dependent one.
  • Fatigue and focus: AllBud lists fatigue and ADD/ADHD among reported uses; the energetic, focused profile is why.
  • Appetite: some reviewers report a modest appetite bump.

Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth — the most common complaint.
  • Anxiety or jitteriness — Leafly's top negative, especially at high doses, on an empty stomach or with caffeine.
  • Headache — also among Leafly's reported negatives.
  • An afternoon dip — some users feel the energy fall off after about two hours.

Is Sour Tangie good for sleep? No — it's one of the more stimulating strains you can pick. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

How to Judge a Good Bag of Sour Tangie

  • Tangerine and fuel. A real Sour Tangie has both. Pure orange with no gas, or pure diesel with no citrus, suggests a mislabeled jar — or at least tells you which phenotype you've got.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC — and ideally a terpene panel, since that's where Sour Tangie cuts differ most. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Frost. Both phenotypes are heavy resin producers; dull, bare buds are a red flag.
  • Bright, sharp aroma when you break a bud. Citrus terpenes fade fast with age and heat, so a flat smell means old or badly stored flower.
  • A proper cure — a hay or grass smell means it was rushed.

Growing Sour Tangie

Sour Tangie vegetates fast and stretches hard — a classic sativa grow. CannaConnection rates it medium difficulty; a Colorado commercial grower told Westword it's "fast in veg but pretty slow to bloom" and "not for the inexperienced or lazy."

  • Flowering: about 9–10 weeks indoors (Leafly and CannaConnection); SeedFinder lists around 67 days and Weedmaps 63–70.
  • Yield: the breeder claims 500–600 g/m² indoors; outdoor yields are large. Westword's grower reported higher yields than either parent.
  • Height: tall — the breeder notes it keeps stretching into the fourth week of flower. Top early and use low-stress training or a screen.
  • Outdoors: harvest around October in the Northern Hemisphere; it likes a long, warm season.
  • Stability: not fully stable — expect both Sour-leaning and Tangie-leaning plants from seed, and keep the cut you like as a mother.
  • Seeds: SeedFinder lists feminized seeds under DNA Genetics' Reserva Privada line; Weedmaps says DNA has offered both regular and feminized.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sour Tangie sativa or indica?

Sour Tangie is a sativa-dominant hybrid — about 80% sativa according to Leafly, AllBud and SeedFinder. Both parents, East Coast Sour Diesel and Tangie, lean sativa, and its effects (energetic, focused, uplifted) follow.

Is Sour Tangie a good strain?

By user ratings, yes — it holds a 4.5-star average on Leafly from more than 770 ratings and is widely considered one of the best citrus daytime strains. It's a poor pick for sleep or for anyone prone to THC anxiety.

How strong is Sour Tangie?

Leafly lists 18% THC; most other sources put it at 19–24%, with some user-reported batches up to 26.5%. It hits fast and goes straight to the head, so start with one small puff.

What is Sour Tangie a cross of?

East Coast Sour Diesel × Tangie, bred by DNA Genetics. Seed databases also list it under Reserva Privada, the seed line run by DNA Genetics' founders.

What does Sour Tangie taste like?

Sweet tangerine and orange peel on the inhale, then a sour, tangy diesel bite on the exhale and a citrus aftertaste that lingers. Tangie-leaning cuts taste sweeter; Sour-leaning cuts are gassier.

What are the effects of Sour Tangie?

Leafly users most often report energetic, focused and uplifted effects, with a creative, talkative streak and very little body weight. The peak arrives within the first hour and tapers after about two to three hours.

What is the dominant terpene in Sour Tangie?

Leafly's lab data lists myrcene first, followed by caryophyllene and limonene. Other sources put limonene or terpinolene on top — it varies by phenotype, so check the terpene panel on your batch's COA.

Is Sour Tangie good for anxiety?

It's mixed. About 25% of Leafly reviewers say it helps, but 'anxious' is also its top-reported negative. Low doses, ideally not on top of coffee, are the safer approach.

Is Sour Tangie good for sleep?

No. It's one of the more stimulating strains available and is best used in the morning or early afternoon.

Is Sour Tangie good for beginners?

With care. Its THC is moderate, but the onset is fast and racy. Take one small puff and wait 10–15 minutes before taking more.

What's the difference between Sour Tangie and Tangie?

Tangie is the sweeter, more purely orange parent. Sour Tangie adds East Coast Sour Diesel's fuel, a sharper exhale and slightly more body.

How long does Sour Tangie take to flower?

About 9–10 weeks indoors (roughly 63–70 days), with outdoor harvests around October. It stretches hard into the fourth week of flower, so top or train it early.

Where can I buy Sour Tangie THCA flower online?

Sour Tangie isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. Our listed closest match is Permanent Marker THCA Flower — not a citrus sativa, but a potent, loud-nosed hybrid, ½oz for $65, third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75. If you want the tangerine-bright daytime lift instead, Dayglow Mousse is the closer flavor and effect match, from $29.
