Truffle Butter Strain

Truffle Butter Strain: Gelato Meets Chocolate Kush

The Truffle Butter strain is an indica-leaning dessert hybrid that crosses Gelato with Chocolate Kush — and the name tells you exactly how it smells. Think chocolate truffle, browned butter, caramel and roasted chestnut, with a tart berry edge from the Gelato side. The high starts giggly and euphoric, then sinks into a heavy, sleepy body. It's the kind of strain you save for after dinner. For relaxing, dessert-leaning flower, start with our THCA flower collection.

It's also a strain with two family trees online. Leafly, AllBud and SeedFinder agree on Gelato × Chocolate Kush, but Weedmaps' strain page shows White Truffle × Jealousy as the parents — and at least one Leafly reviewer says their jar was labeled that way too. Below: what each database actually says, how the high unfolds, what the potency numbers mean, how it compares to the other "truffle" strains, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

A 360° look at Truffle Butter's frosty buds.

Truffle Butter Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. AllBud puts it at 70% indica / 30% sativa, SeedFinder calls it "mostly indica," and Leafly files it under indica with effects that are "mostly calming." Weedmaps just says hybrid.
  • Breeder: Leafly and Weedmaps credit THClones. SeedFinder lists a seed version from Purple Caper Seeds. AllBud names no breeder, though the video embedded on its page is titled as a Humboldt Exotics drop.
  • Parents: Leafly and AllBud list Gelato × Chocolate Kush. SeedFinder narrows the Gelato side to Gelato #45.
  • THC: about 21% on Leafly; 20–21% on AllBud; Weedmaps gives a wider 10–21%.
  • CBD: negligible. Leafly lists none; individual product listings on Weedmaps show well under 1%.
  • Aliases: Leafly lists "Truffle Budder" and "TFB."

The Gelato side

Gelato is the Bay Area dessert strain built from Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint GSC. SeedFinder traces Truffle Butter's Gelato parent through that same line, via Gelato #45. That's where the sweet, creamy top note and the berry tartness come from — and the euphoric, giggly start to the high.

The Chocolate Kush side

Chocolate Kush brings the cocoa and the weight. "Chocolate Kush" is a name more than one breeder has used, so the exact cut is hard to pin down. SeedFinder's genealogy for Truffle Butter traces it back through a Moroccan hash plant and a Chocolope-related line; one grow site says Chocolate Kush was bred in Spain, but cites no source. Either way, it's the most likely reason Truffle Butter reads roasted and chocolatey instead of fruity, and why the body effect is heavier than most Gelato crosses.

The White Truffle × Jealousy conflict

Weedmaps' strain page lists the parents as White Truffle and Jealousy, even though its own description says Gelato and Chocolate Kush. A Leafly reviewer reported the same White Truffle × Jealousy label on their batch. The likeliest explanation is that a second, different cross is being sold under the same name — White Truffle is itself a buttery, nutty, caryophyllene-led strain, so the name would fit. We couldn't find a breeder documenting that version, so we treat Gelato × Chocolate Kush as the main Truffle Butter and the White Truffle × Jealousy cut as a separate plant sharing the name. If the cross matters to you, ask the seller.

History and offspring

No source we found gives a reliable release year. One long strain guide places it in the post-2017 wave of Gelato crosses and says it started as a West Coast clone-only before spreading to other legal markets, but it cites nothing. Leafly lists one child strain, Truffaloha; SeedFinder lists no descendants yet.

Truffle Butter Terpene Profile

Leafly names caryophyllene as Truffle Butter's dominant terpene — the peppery, woody one that fits the roasted, nutty nose. Strain guides add myrcene, limonene, linalool and humulene, but without lab data behind them, and one grow site's terpene table (carene, camphene, caryophyllene, linalool) doesn't match its own text. Caryophyllene is the one with real research interest: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Caryophyllene — pepper, wood, roasted spice

Myrcene — earthy, musky, heavy body

Limonene — faint citrus lift

Humulene — woody, earthy depth

Linalool — floral, soft calm

Estimated relative profile for Truffle Butter — caryophyllene as dominant per Leafly; myrcene, limonene, humulene and linalool from strain guides without published lab data.

  • Caryophyllene: The pepper and roasted-wood note under the chocolate, and Leafly's listed dominant terpene.
  • Myrcene: The earthy, musky terpene most often linked with heavy, sleepy strains. Guides credit it to the Kush side; it fits the couch-lock reports.
  • Limonene: A faint citrus brightness, probably from the Gelato side, and part of the giggly start.
  • Humulene and linalool: Woody depth and a soft floral calm. Treat both as plausible, not proven.

No single terpene is the "truffle." The chocolate and butter come from the whole blend — spice, earth, a little citrus and the sweet compounds that survive a good cure — which is why a slow, careful cure matters so much with this strain.

Appearance

AllBud describes fluffy, rounded, dark olive-green nugs with dark amber undertones, furry bright hairs and "super thick vivid amber crystal trichomes." One AllBud reviewer calls the buds medium, sectioned and Christmas-tree shaped. Purple Caper Seeds' description on SeedFinder says its version develops dark purple hues, and one long strain guide mentions purple marbling when late-flower nights run cool. A grow site adds deep forest green with vivid orange pistils. Put together: dark green to purple-marbled, orange-haired and very frosty.

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar and you get chocolate and caramel first, then roasted chestnut, butter and a sweet, fruity edge. Leafly lists the flavors as butter and chestnut, with berry and nutty notes in its description; one Leafly reviewer called it earthy, peppery and chocolatey. AllBud's tags read caramel, fruity, nutty and sweet, with reviewers adding chocolate, kush, woody and tropical. Weedmaps describes "sugar, chocolate and tart berries," and Purple Caper Seeds compares its cut to an artisanal chocolate truffle.

Leafly reviewers often call the smoke smooth. The sweetness is delicate, though — overdried or rushed Truffle Butter loses the chocolate fast and just tastes earthy.

Recreational Effects

Truffle Butter is an evening strain. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.6 rating from 54 reviews, the most-reported effects are:

  • Relaxed: the headline effect — Leafly sums the strain up as "mostly calming," and relaxed tops Weedmaps' reviews too.
  • Giggly and euphoric: the Gelato-side lift at the start.
  • Aroused: a top-three effect on Leafly and the second most-reported on Weedmaps.
  • Sleepy and hungry: AllBud lists body high, hungry, relaxing and sleepy, and describes "building couch-lock" — expect the munchies.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First few minutes: an uplifting, euphoric head change. Several Leafly reviewers call it a creeper, so don't judge it too early.
  • 20–60 minutes: the peak — happy, giggly and loose, with the body getting heavier.
  • 1–3 hours: a slide into sedation and couch-lock. One strain guide puts the total at 2–4 hours.

Because it ends sleepy, plan around it. Use it at night, not before anything you need to be sharp for.

How Strong Is Truffle Butter?

Truffle Butter is solidly above average but not a record-breaker. The published numbers:

  • Leafly: 21% THC.
  • AllBud: 20–21% THC.
  • Weedmaps: 10–21% THC on the strain page, a wide range that reflects different growers.
  • Strain guides: 20–26% (VIVOSUN) and 18–28% (JointCommerce) — neither cites a lab.

Individual dispensary menus sometimes advertise much higher numbers; one Los Angeles delivery listing on Weedmaps names a 35.98% batch. Treat a single headline number like that as one batch, not the strain. Realistically, a well-grown cut lands around 20–24%, and the heavy body feel comes as much from the terpene mix as from raw THC.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Truffle Butter against the 10–28% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Truffle Butter vs the Other "Truffle" Strains

"Truffle" has become a whole family name, and the strains are easy to mix up:

  • White Truffle: a Gorilla Butter descendant (Leafly credits Fresh Coast Genetics) with butter, nutty and chestnut flavors and caryophyllene in the lead. It's the closest flavor cousin — and, per Weedmaps, possibly a parent of a second Truffle Butter cut.
  • Black Truffle: a separate strain with its own lineage. Same naming theme, different plant.
  • Truffle Cake: another dessert-named cross in the same flavor lane.

The name alone won't tell you which one you're holding. Look for the cross on the label or COA.

Truffle Butter vs Similar Strains

  • vs Gelato: the parent. Gelato is sweeter, fruitier and more balanced; Truffle Butter adds chocolate and weight and lands much sleepier.
  • vs Gelato #45: the specific Gelato cut SeedFinder lists. Similar creamy sweetness without the cocoa.
  • vs Mint Chocolate Chip and Cookies and Cream: other chocolate-adjacent dessert strains, though both lean more minty or vanilla.
  • vs Peanut Butter Breath: the nutty, savory, sedating option if the "butter" half is what you're after.
  • vs Ice Cream Cake: another creamy, Gelato-descended nightcap with a heavier vanilla-dough profile.
  • vs Lemon Cherry Gelato: our featured in-stock pick, and honestly not a twin. Both share the Gelato-family sweetness and a smooth, relaxing finish, but Lemon Cherry Gelato runs cherry and citrus instead of chocolate and nut, and it's lighter in the body. Want a heavier night? Mule Fuel is our gas-forward heavy hitter.

Who Truffle Butter Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: evening and weekend smokers, people winding down after work, dessert-flavor fans, anyone who likes a giggly start and a heavy finish, and people who want a nightcap strain.

Poor fit: daytime or work use, anyone who needs to stay sharp, and people prone to THC anxiety — "anxious" and "dizzy" are among Leafly's reported negatives. For a Gelato-family dessert flower on our shelf, Lemon Cherry Gelato is the pick, from $69.

How to Use Truffle Butter THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the chocolate and caramel. Lower temperatures, around 350–380°F, keep the sweet notes intact; 390–410°F brings out the pepper and wood and a heavier body effect.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — it's a creeper. Regular users usually find two or three hits is plenty before bed. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: about 30% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud also lists stress and chronic stress.
  • Anxiety: about 30% of Leafly reviewers — though "anxious" is also a reported negative, so keep the dose low.
  • Low mood: about 24% of Leafly reviewers mention depression, and AllBud lists it as well.
  • Pain and sleep: Leafly says users choose it for chronic pain and insomnia; AllBud adds headaches, migraines and fatigue, and its reviewers mention muscle spasms and menstrual cramps.

If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth — the most common complaint on Leafly.
  • Anxiety and dizziness — Leafly's other reported negatives, more likely at high doses or low tolerance.
  • Couch-lock and heavy sleepiness — AllBud notes "building couch-lock," and one reviewer says it "makes me yawn."
  • Munchies — "hungry" is one of AllBud's listed effects.

Is Truffle Butter good for sleep? For many people, yes — that's how it ends. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Truffle Butter Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask for the cross. Gelato × Chocolate Kush is the documented Truffle Butter; a White Truffle × Jealousy jar is a different plant with the same name.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Chocolate and caramel. A real Truffle Butter smells sweet and roasted, with pepper underneath. Flat, hay-like or purely earthy flower is old or mislabeled.
  • Frost you can see — thick, sticky trichomes over dark green or purple-marbled buds with orange hairs.
  • A proper cure — the dessert notes are the first thing a rushed dry destroys.

Growing Truffle Butter

Truffle Butter is a moderate grow with a fast finish. Seeds are hard to find; most growers start from clones, and Purple Caper Seeds' version is the documented seed line.

  • Flowering: about 53 days per SeedFinder, or 7–8 weeks in Purple Caper's description. Other guides say 8–10 weeks, and one lists 62 days.
  • Setting: Purple Caper calls it a "greenhouse and indoor king" that performs well in light-dep and mixed-light setups.
  • Yield: strain guides list about 400–500 g/m² indoors and up to roughly 550–600 g per plant outdoors. None of those numbers are breeder-verified.
  • Training: top early and use low-stress training or a screen. Dense buds need good airflow and defoliation to keep powdery mildew and bud rot away.
  • Color: cooler late-flower nights bring out the purple — and, growers say, deepen the chocolate on the nose.

Is Truffle Butter THCA Flower Legal?

State laws differ and are changing, so check your state before you order. And whatever the label says, THCA flower will show up on a drug test — heated, it is THC.
