Black Truffle Strain: Dark, Funky and Built for the Evening
The Black Truffle strain is the darker sibling in the Truffle family — dense, near-black-purple buds, a nose of spicy rubber, gas, coffee and earth, and a high that starts in the head and settles hard into the body. The best-documented version comes from Michigan's 3rd Coast Genetics, where breeder Max Yields crossed White Truffle with Pure Michigan. But Leafly lists a different Black Truffle entirely: a California cut from Big Chief, bred from Gelato 33 and an unknown partner.
So the honest answer to "what is Black Truffle?" is: it depends on whose jar you're holding. Below we untangle the two lineages, how Black Truffle differs from White Truffle, the terpene profile, how the high unfolds, how strong it really is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag — plus the closest heavy hitters in our THCA flower collection.
A 360° look at Black Truffle's frosty buds.

- Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. AllBud lists 60% indica / 40% sativa; Secret Nature says roughly 70/30; 3rd Coast Genetics simply calls it an indica.
- Lineage #1 (3rd Coast Genetics): White Truffle × Pure Michigan, bred by Max Yields. This is the cross on the 3rd Coast Genetics cultivar page, on Weedmaps, and in SeedFinder's family tree.
- Lineage #2 (Big Chief): Gelato 33 × an unknown strain, per Leafly. SeedFinder says Big Chief never confirmed which Gelato was used; Gelato 33 is the rumor.
- Lineage #3 (single-source): Secret Nature, a THCA seller, lists Gelato 33 × Chocolate Kush. We found no breeder source backing the Chocolate Kush half.
- THC: Leafly lists 18% (Big Chief's figure, per SeedFinder); AllBud 26–27%; 3rd Coast and Weedmaps 26–31%. CBD is trace; Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
- Terpene content: 3rd Coast advertises 3–4.5% total terpenes — very high if a batch actually tests there.
Two strains, one name
Weedmaps puts it best: Black Truffle "digs into different family trees, each serving its own helping of funk." The two versions really do differ. The 3rd Coast Black Truffle is the savory one — "spicy rubber and gas" per the breeder, with Weedmaps reviewers adding earth, musk, garlic and caramel, and flavor votes led by chestnut, nutty and diesel. That's exactly what you'd expect from a White Truffle (garlic-gas) × Pure Michigan (mocha-chestnut-diesel) cross. The Big Chief Black Truffle is the Gelato side: Leafly reviewers report tea, apricot, lavender and menthol, AllBud describes "spicy coffee with fresh grapes and blueberries," and the effects skew more talkative and energetic.
JointCommerce goes as far as calling Black Truffle "a market label rather than a single breeder-locked variety." Our read: the 3rd Coast White Truffle × Pure Michigan cross is the best-documented breeder release, but ask the seller which one you're buying.
Black Truffle vs White Truffle: what's the difference?
This is the question most people searching the name actually have. White Truffle is a phenotype selection of Gorilla Butter (Peanut Butter Breath × GG4) found by Fresh Coast Seed Co with BeLeaf Cannabis — a garlic, mushroom and kerosene bomb, caked white in trichomes. On the 3rd Coast side, Black Truffle is White Truffle's offspring: it keeps the savory funk and the frost, but the Pure Michigan side shifts it toward coffee, chestnut and rubber instead of straight garlic, and the buds run darker. Big Chief's Gelato Black Truffle isn't related to White Truffle at all — it just shares the name.
- White Truffle: garlic-first, kerosene, white frost, caryophyllene-led.
- Black Truffle (3rd Coast): rubber, gas, coffee and chestnut, darker buds, a heavier body.
- Black Truffle (Big Chief): sweeter and fruitier — tea, apricot, berry — with a chattier start.
Black Truffle Terpene Profile
Leafly lists caryophyllene as Black Truffle's dominant terpene, followed by terpinolene and limonene. 3rd Coast Genetics lists limonene, caryophyllene and humulene for its cut; Secret Nature adds myrcene and a trace of linalool. The common thread is caryophyllene — the peppery terpene a 2008 PNAS study identified as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, the savory backbone
Limonene — citrus lift over the funk
Humulene — earthy, woody, hoppy
Terpinolene — fruity-herbal edge, more in Gelato cuts
Typical relative profile for Black Truffle — caryophyllene-led per Leafly. 3rd Coast cuts can read limonene-forward; Big Chief's Gelato cut shows more terpinolene.
- Caryophyllene: Black pepper and clove — the warm, spicy base under the gas, and the terpene White Truffle is known for.
- Limonene: A citrus lift that keeps the funk from going flat, and part of the quick mood boost at the start.
- Humulene: Woody, earthy and hoppy — the forest-floor note that makes the "truffle" name land.
- Terpinolene: Fruity and herbal; Leafly's second-ranked terpene and likely behind the tea, apricot and menthol notes in the Gelato-line cut.
The coffee, chestnut and rubber notes aren't one terpene — they're the Pure Michigan side's mocha-and-diesel chemistry layered on White Truffle's savory caryophyllene base.
Appearance
The "black" is earned. SeedFinder describes dark buds with deep purple hues; JointCommerce, dark olive to deep purple calyxes threaded with copper-to-amber pistils, and near-black purples when late flower runs cool. AllBud describes large, dense, diamond-shaped, dark olive-green buds with thin orange hairs under a frosty coat of dark crystal trichomes. Expect compact, golf-ball to egg-shaped nugs that feel heavy for their size — the White Truffle frost carries through on the 3rd Coast side.
Aroma and Flavor
Break a 3rd Coast Black Truffle bud and you get what the breeder calls "spicy rubber and gas," with earth, musk, a hint of garlic from the White Truffle side and a caramel-chestnut sweetness from Pure Michigan. On the inhale it's earthy coffee and peppered diesel; the exhale is long, oily and spicy, with a pepper tickle. Weedmaps' flavor votes come out chestnut, nutty and diesel.
The Gelato-line cut reads differently: Leafly's reviewers list tea, apricot and menthol (its description says tea, lavender and menthol), and AllBud describes spicy coffee with fresh grapes and blueberries. If your jar smells like berries and cream more than rubber and gas, you're likely holding the Big Chief version.
Recreational Effects
Black Truffle's high has two phases: a quick, cerebral lift, then a heavy body. 3rd Coast describes "a strong cerebral effect and a relaxing body buzz"; SeedFinder calls it a long-lasting "creeping" high that moves from head to body. Reported effects across sources:
- Euphoric and happy: the mood lift comes first — Secret Nature puts it at about the first 15–20 minutes.
- Talkative and aroused: Leafly's top-reported effects, mostly from the Gelato-line cut; Leafly even calls its effects "mostly energizing."
- Creative and focused: AllBud reports a fast mental onset with focus and creativity.
- Relaxed, then sleepy: the body calm takes over and deepens with dose; JointCommerce and Secret Nature both describe couch-lock at higher doses.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First few minutes: a fast head change and mood lift.
- 15–45 minutes: the peak — happy and relaxed, still functional at moderate doses.
- 45 minutes on: the body settles in; heavier doses pull you toward the couch.
- 2–3 hours: total duration when inhaled, with a gentle taper (Secret Nature). Edibles can run 6–8 hours.

How Strong Is Black Truffle? Is It the Strongest Strain?
It depends heavily on which Black Truffle. The published numbers:
- Leafly: 18% THC, about 1% CBG — Big Chief's own average, per SeedFinder.
- Secret Nature: 22–28%.
- AllBud: 26–27%.
- 3rd Coast Genetics and Weedmaps: 26–31% for the White Truffle × Pure Michigan cross.
Is it the strongest strain ever? No single strain holds that title — potency varies more between growers and batches than between names, and plenty of modern cultivars test in the 30s. But a well-grown 3rd Coast Black Truffle sits firmly in the heavyweight class, and its dense, high-terpene, caryophyllene-led profile tends to feel even stronger than the number. As one Leafly reviewer put it: "Black Truffle is POWERFUL."
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Black Truffle batch against the 18–31% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Why Is Black Truffle So Special?
Three reasons it stands out on a menu crowded with candy strains. It's savory — rubber, gas, coffee and chestnut instead of another fruit or dessert profile. It comes from two of the most-talked-about modern parents, White Truffle and Pure Michigan. And it's genuinely potent and frosty, with the breeder advertising terpene totals of 3–4.5%. It's also hard to find authentically, which adds to the mystique.
Black Truffle vs Similar Strains
- vs White Truffle: the parent. White Truffle is more garlic and kerosene with whiter frost; Black Truffle is darker, with more rubber, coffee and chestnut.
- vs Pure Michigan: the other parent — mocha, chestnut, diesel and that ammonia edge. Black Truffle adds White Truffle's savory caryophyllene funk.
- vs Gelato 33 and Gelato 41: the Big Chief side. The Gelatos are sweeter and creamier with a lighter body.
- vs Wedding Cake: similar potency and relaxing body, but brighter, with more citrus from limonene (per Secret Nature's comparison).
- vs Permanent Marker: a loud, peppery, gassy indica-leaning hybrid with the same heavy evening finish — our closest match in stock.
Who Black Truffle Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced smokers who want a heavy evening strain; terpene chasers tired of dessert profiles; fans of White Truffle or Pure Michigan.
Poor fit: beginners, daytime productivity, or anyone sensitive to dizziness (one of Leafly's top negatives). For something sweeter with a similarly relaxed finish, Super Boof is the dessert-leaning option on our shelf.
How to Use Black Truffle THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to separate the layers. Around 350–380°F shows the citrus and the coffee; 390–410°F brings out the pepper, gas and the heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — the body side creeps in after the head high. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full arc; more than that tends toward couch-lock. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 25% of reviewers).
- Low mood: about 21% of Leafly reviewers.
- Stress: about 18% on Leafly; AllBud also lists chronic stress.
- Aches and evening tension: AllBud lists chronic pain; Secret Nature points to the caryophyllene-heavy, indica-leaning profile.
- Sleep: reported mainly at higher doses, when the body effect turns sedating.
- Fatigue and focus: AllBud and Leafly list fatigue and attention, mostly tied to the more energetic Gelato-line cut.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly.
- Dizziness — among Leafly's top negatives, especially if you stand up fast after a heavy session.
- Couch-lock and heavy sleepiness at higher doses.
Don't drive after using it, and be careful mixing it with alcohol or sedatives. Talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
How to Judge a Good Bag of Black Truffle
- Ask which Black Truffle. A good seller knows if it's the 3rd Coast White Truffle × Pure Michigan or a Gelato cut. "Black Truffle" with no lineage is a yellow flag.
- Smell it. The 3rd Coast version should hit rubber, gas and coffee with a peppery edge; berries and cream suggest the Gelato cut; nothing at all suggests a bad cure.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Dense, dark, frosty buds with trichomes inside the nug, not just on top.
- A proper cure. JointCommerce notes many connoisseurs prefer a 4–6 week cure to bring the savory and sweet layers together.
Growing Black Truffle
Black Truffle grows compact and bushy, with dense flowers that reward a dialed-in room. Secret Nature calls it "not the easiest grow."
- Flowering: about 8–9 weeks indoors (Weedmaps, SeedFinder, Secret Nature); some phenotypes run 63–70 days.
- Yield: about 400–500 g/m² under good conditions, per Secret Nature. Breeders don't publish a figure.
- Outdoors: late September to early October in the Northern Hemisphere (Weedmaps, 3rd Coast version).
- Watch for: powdery mildew and bud rot in those dense colas — strong airflow, and humidity under 45% in the last two weeks. A SCROG helps even out the canopy.
- Color: cooler late-flower nights push the deep purples.
- Smell: loud — run carbon filtration.
- Seeds: Weedmaps lists the 3rd Coast version as regular seeds, so sex your plants or start from a verified clone.
