Afternoon Delight Strain: Two Strains, One Very Good Name
The Afternoon Delight strain is really two strains. The original, also spelled Afternoon Delite, comes from Colorado Seed Inc. — a Banana × Schrom × Tangie hybrid with a piney, citrusy nose and a tingly, relaxed high. The one you're more likely to see on a dispensary menu today is Afternoon Delight #4 from RYTHM, a GMO × Trophy Wife cross that smells like gas and tests much stronger. Both earn the name: a mood lift that keeps you functional. They sit in the bright, daytime corner of our THCA flower collection.
Below: which Afternoon Delight is which, what the potency and terpene numbers say, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

The original: Colorado Seed Inc.'s Afternoon Delight
- Breeder: Colorado Seed Inc., per Leafly and Leafwell.
- Ancestry: Banana × Schrom × Tangie, per AllBud and Leafwell. Tangie brings the citrus.
- Type: Disputed. AllBud lists it as 70% sativa; Leafwell estimates 70% indica; Leafly's description calls it indica-dominant but its effects data reads balanced. Both AllBud and Leafwell admit the exact ratio is unknown.
- THC: Leafly lists 17% with about 1% CBG; AllBud 18–20%; Leafwell 14–18%, plus small amounts of CBD, THCV, CBC and CBN.
- Availability: Leafly calls it "often hard to track down."
Afternoon Delight #4: RYTHM's GMO × Trophy Wife
- Breeder: RYTHM, the cannabis brand of multistate operator GTI, per Leafly, GrowDiaries and Toker's Guide.
- Ancestry: GMO (Garlic Cookies) × Trophy Wife. GMO brings the garlicky, chemical gas and heavy resin; JointCommerce describes Trophy Wife as a Wedding Cake-line selection, which would explain the creamier sweetness some batches show.
- Type: Balanced hybrid — Leafly and GrowDiaries list it 50/50, and Leafly says its effects are "mostly energizing."
- THC: Leafly lists 21%; GrowDiaries 26% (20–31% range); Blue Oak, a New Jersey dispensary, says lab results regularly land at 25–30% or more.
- Aliases: AD#4, AD4.
Other Afternoon Delights
"Afternoon Delight #7" also appears on menus, but no breeder has published its pedigree. And SeedFinder lists a separate Afternoon Delights (with an s) from Lupos CannaSeed — Apple Fritter × Strawberry Eclaire — unrelated to either strain above. As Blue Oak puts it, the name covers several strains, so check the label.
Where the name comes from
Nobody's breeder notes explain it, but the reference is obvious: "Afternoon Delight" is the 1976 Starland Vocal Band hit written by Bill Danoff. Leafwell notes the strain's reputation as a mood-and-romance strain — and Leafly lists "aroused" among AD#4's top effects.
Afternoon Delight Terpene Profile
The two strains read differently on paper. Leafly's lab-sourced data lists terpinolene as the original's dominant terpene, followed by myrcene and pinene — a bright, piney, fruity profile, and terpinolene-led strains are rare. For Afternoon Delight #4, Leafly lists myrcene as dominant, while GrowDiaries lists caryophyllene first, then limonene and myrcene — the peppery, gassy GMO signature. One Pennsylvania medical patient posted a Rythm AD#4 batch at 2.70% total terpenes on Reddit.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Terpinolene — fresh, piney-fruity lift (original)
Myrcene — earthy, relaxed body
Pinene — pine, clear head
Caryophyllene — pepper and gas (AD#4)
Limonene — citrus, mood
Blended relative profile: terpinolene-myrcene-pinene for the original (Leafly lab data); caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene for Afternoon Delight #4 (Leafly, GrowDiaries). Batches vary.
- Terpinolene: Piney, fruity and herbal — the original's signature, and a big part of why it reads bright and fresh.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky; it carries the relaxed body in both strains.
- Pinene: Fresh pine, and part of why the original keeps a clear head.
- Caryophyllene: The pepper on the exhale and the backbone of AD#4's GMO gas.
- Limonene: The lemon and citrus that brighten AD#4's funk, and a driver of the mood lift.
Appearance
AllBud describes the original as "lumpy popcorn-shaped bright neon green nugs" with thin orange hairs and a sweet, sticky resin; Leafly and Leafwell call the buds small and dense. Afternoon Delight #4 looks heavier: Leafly describes dense, frosty buds in dark green with purple hues, and Toker's Guide called its trichome retention "wildly impressive," with intact heads on nearly every stalk.
Aroma and Flavor
The original smells skunky and fruity with tropical citrus, per AllBud, and turns pungent and diesel-like when burned. Leafly's reviewers taste pine, apple and pepper; AllBud adds sweet citrus, berry and a nutty note.
Afternoon Delight #4 is all funk. Blue Oak says the gas hits "from the moment you open the bag," and the exhale is gassy and earthy with a hint of pepper. Leafly lists diesel, chemical and earthy. Toker's Guide found grassy, floral notes on the first sniff, then cedarwood and pepper — and a sharp, nail-polish-remover astringency on the grind that the reviewer credits to GMO. GrowDiaries adds cheese and lemon.
Recreational Effects
Both versions aim at the same slot: a happy, functional afternoon. On Leafly, the original's top effects are tingly, relaxed and hungry (4.6 stars, 81 ratings); AD#4's are aroused, focused and euphoric (4.8 stars, 49 ratings). Across sources, people report:
- Euphoric and happy: the headline effect for AD#4 — Blue Oak says it can make you "collapse into giggles."
- Tingly: Leafwell describes a tingle at the back of the neck that spreads down the limbs.
- Focused and creative: enough to get through chores or the last hours of the workday.
- Relaxed: a calm body without heavy couch-lock at moderate doses.
- Hungry: one of the original's top three effects on Leafly.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a gentle mood lift — Toker's Guide said AD#4 "came on gently," with nothing racy.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — euphoric, chatty and tingly, with a loose body.
- 1–4 hours: a long, even settle. Blue Oak puts AD#4 at two to four hours; Leafwell says the original's comedown turns sedating.
So is Afternoon Delight indica or sativa? Neither, cleanly: AD#4 is a 50/50 hybrid, and the original's lean is disputed. Both play like balanced hybrids with an uplifting front.

How Strong Is Afternoon Delight?
It depends which one you have:
- Original (Leafly): 17% THC, about 1% CBG — still flagged "higher THC than average."
- Original (AllBud / Leafwell): 18–20% / 14–18%.
- Afternoon Delight #4 (Leafly): 21%.
- Afternoon Delight #4 (GrowDiaries): 26%, with a 20–31% range.
- Afternoon Delight #4 (Blue Oak, NJ): regularly 25–30% or more on lab results.
The original is a moderate strain by modern standards. AD#4 is a heavy hitter — Blue Oak recommends it for experienced consumers and suggests one small hit, then a 10-minute wait.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Afternoon Delight batch against the 14–31% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Afternoon Delight vs Similar Strains
- vs GMO: AD#4's parent. GMO is heavier and sleepier with more garlic; AD#4 is more balanced and functional.
- vs Garlic Breath and GMO Root Beer: other GMO-family funk strains. Both lean heavier and more savory than AD#4.
- vs Wedding Cake: the reported line behind Trophy Wife — sweeter, creamier and more relaxing.
- vs Tangie: the original's citrus parent — brighter and more energetic, with less body.
- vs Orange Malt and Obama Runtz: Blue Oak's comparisons. Orange Malt is sweeter and citrusy; Obama Runtz is a couch-lock, munchies-and-sleep strain.
- vs Dayglow Mousse: our closest in-stock match. It's sativa-leaning and citrus-forward, so it's close to the original's bright, daytime lane. It isn't a GMO gas strain — for that side of AD#4, see Permanent Marker or Super Boof below.
Who Afternoon Delight Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: people who want a mood lift that still lets them function — errands, chores, a walk, the end of the workday, a comedy. Toker's Guide specifically recommended AD#4 for people who get anxious when a strain hits too hard.
Poor fit: beginners on a 30% AD#4 batch, or anyone who needs a knockout sleep strain. For a brighter citrus high, Dayglow Mousse is the daytime option on our shelf; for AD#4-style gas and a heavier body, try Permanent Marker or Super Boof.
How to Use Afternoon Delight THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: a good way to taste the original's pine and citrus, or AD#4's lemon under the gas. Around 340–370°F keeps the terpinolene, pinene and limonene; 390–410°F brings out the caryophyllene and a heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 10–15 minutes — especially with AD#4. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full afternoon arc without the sleepy comedown. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and other strain databases, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason for AD#4 on Leafly (about 36%) — though the original lists "paranoid" among its negatives, so dose matters.
- Low mood: about 28% of AD#4 reviewers and 18% of original reviewers.
- Pain: about 22% (AD#4) and 13% (original).
- Stress: about 14% of original reviewers; Blue Oak calls AD#4 a stress-melter.
- Appetite: "hungry" is one of the original's top effects.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the usual complaints, listed for AD#4.
- Dizziness and headache — on Leafly's negatives for both strains.
- Paranoia — a top-three negative for the original; more likely at high doses.
Is Afternoon Delight good for sleep? Not really at low doses — it's built for afternoons — but the original's comedown can turn sedating. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Afternoon Delight Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask which one. "Afternoon Delight #4" should mean RYTHM's GMO × Trophy Wife. Plain "Afternoon Delight" could be the Colorado original or something else.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- The right nose. The original should smell like pine and citrus; AD#4 should hit you with gas and chemical funk. Hay or grass means a rushed cure.
- Trichomes. Intact, frosty heads — AD#4 especially should be sticky and dense.
Growing Afternoon Delight
- Original: Leafwell calls it finicky and hard to find as seed. Expect 8–10 weeks indoors and a mid-to-late October outdoor finish; plants run 3–6 ft and do best with topping, pruning and a screen of green. Protect it from cold snaps.
- Afternoon Delight #4: a RYTHM clone-only cut as far as we can find. GrowDiaries lists 56–63 days of flower, about 400–500 g/m² indoors and 500–600 g per plant outdoors, compact indoors (under 4 ft) and 5–8 ft outdoors, with a late-September to early-October outdoor harvest.
- Humidity: both make dense buds — keep humidity down in late flower to avoid mold.
Is Afternoon Delight THCA Flower Legal?

Are Afternoon Delight and Afternoon Delight #4 the same?

Afternoon Delight #4 flowers in about 56–63 days. The original takes about 8–10 weeks indoors.
Where can I buy Afternoon Delight THCA flower online?
Afternoon Delight isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. The closest match is Dayglow Mousse THCA Flower — a citrus-forward, sativa-leaning hybrid with a euphoric, functional daytime lift, from $29, third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75. It's closer to the original than to AD#4's gas, so if you want that GMO-style funk and a heavier body, look at Permanent Marker.
