Apple Tartz Strain

Apple Tartz Strain: Runtz Candy Meets Apple Fritter Dough

The Apple Tartz strain is a hybrid of Runtz and Apple Fritter, bred by Clearwater Genetics and named one of Leafly's Strains of Summer 2022. It smells like tart sour apple and creamy berry candy with gas underneath, it tests strong — batches commonly land between 26% and 32% THCA — and the high runs euphoric and tingly before it settles into a relaxed, unhurried body. It sits in the candy-and-dessert corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also a strain where the jar can vary. The breeder's own notes describe phenotypes ranging from "candy gas to sour apple," and reviewers argue about whether it tastes more like Runtz or more like Fritter. Below: the genetics and the people behind them, how the phenotypes differ, what the potency numbers actually mean, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

Quick Facts

In short: A Runtz × Apple Fritter hybrid from Clearwater Genetics — tart sour apple, cream and candy gas on the nose, a euphoric, tingly head change and a relaxed body, with batches testing 26–32% THCA.

Apple Tartz Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Hybrid. Leafly and SeedFinder both call it balanced, and nobody credible lists it as a pure indica or sativa.
  • Ancestry: Runtz (Zkittlez × Gelato) × Apple Fritter (Sour Apple × Animal Cookies). Some sources list the parents the other way round — Apple Fritter × Runtz — but every source we checked names the same two parents.
  • Breeder: Clearwater Genetics, which SeedFinder describes as a collective of growers and breeders based in Colorado Springs. Leafly and Cannabis Business Times credit the same breeder.
  • THC: Leafly lists 26%; the Cannabis Business Times grow profile says it "consistently tests between 26% and 32% THCA."
  • CBD / CBG: CBD is negligible. Leafly lists about 1% CBG; the grow profile reports 0.7%.
  • Aliases: Apple Tarts, Apple Tart, and Leafly's shorthand "ApT." Don't confuse it with dispensary products simply labeled "Apple Tart" from other growers — ask for the lineage.
  • Offspring: Leafly lists GT Guava Tartz.

Where Apple Tartz came from

Clearwater Genetics doesn't publish much of an origin story, and SeedFinder notes the breeder shares little about it. What's on the record comes from a 2023 Cannabis Business Times "Breeder's Insights" profile, written by Sjoerd Broeks and Eva Erickson of Haze Valley Nursery in Santa Cruz and credited "Bred by Clearwater Genetics." In it, breeder Alex Wullbrandt calls Apple Tartz "one of the heavy hitters out of the Apple Fritter feminized line" — Clearwater's run of crosses built on the Apple Fritter cut. He adds that a later Apple Tartz line using a selection from Jollygreenthumb "took it up a notch," and that a cross with Dantes Inferno "is producing some incredible plants."

SeedFinder lists Apple Tartz as available only in feminized seeds and notes it's no longer listed on the breeder's website, so seed availability is uncertain. A few auto-generated strain-guide sites credit other breeders; we found no primary source for those claims.

Phenotypes: candy gas vs sour apple

Apple Tartz doesn't have numbered cuts like some famous strains, but the breeder-credited profile is clear that phenotypes split two ways:

  • Candy-gas leaning: the Runtz side — sweet berry candy over fuel. One Leafly reviewer summed it up as "Runtz more than Fritter."
  • Sour-apple leaning: the Fritter side — tart green apple, dough and cream, a nod to Sour Apple two generations back.

Structurally, the profile says the plant "leans more toward its Fritter lineage" — squat, bushy and sturdy. Which nose you get depends on the cut your grower is running.

Apple Tartz Terpene Profile

Sources don't agree on the exact order. Leafly lists myrcene first, then pinene and limonene. The Cannabis Business Times grow profile calls it "high in linalool, limonene, caryophyllene and myrcene." Both make sense for a Runtz × Fritter cross: limonene and caryophyllene run through the Gelato and Cookies families, and linalool adds a soft floral edge. Caryophyllene is worth knowing about in its own right — a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Myrcene — earthy, relaxed body

Limonene — tart fruit, mood lift

Caryophyllene — pepper, gas, cinnamon spice

Linalool — floral, calming finish

Pinene — pine, clear head

Typical relative profile for Apple Tartz, blending Leafly's listing with the breeder-credited grow profile. Sour-apple cuts read more limonene-forward; candy-gas cuts lean heavier on caryophyllene.

  • Myrcene: Earthy and musky; Leafly's top terpene for Apple Tartz and a big part of the relaxed body.
  • Limonene: Bright and tart — it's behind much of the sour-apple snap and the euphoric onset.
  • Caryophyllene: Peppery and warm; it gives the gas its edge and may be where that "hint of cinnamon spice" comes from.
  • Linalool: Floral and soft, flagged as prominent in the grow profile, and associated with the calmer side of the high.
  • Pinene: A pine note in Leafly's listing that keeps the head from going completely foggy.

The "apple" isn't one terpene. It's the combined chemistry of the Fritter side — and it's much louder in sour-apple phenotypes than in candy-gas ones.

Appearance

Apple Tartz is a looker — Leafly calls it "a gorgeous strain that's sure to draw your attention." Expect dense, tight, rock-hard buds (one reviewer's words: "Tight flowers, rock hard"), lime to forest green with orange pistils and a thick coat of trichomes. Reviewers mention visible kief and colorful flecks. The resin isn't just for show: the grow profile reports 4–5% finished rosin from fresh-frozen material, which is why the strain also shows up as live rosin and cartridges.

Aroma and Flavor

Leafly's description sums it up: Apple Tartz "tastes like tart sour apple and creamy berry gas," with some people noticing cookie dough or Apple Jacks cereal and "a hint of cinnamon spice." Leafly's flavor tags are apple, ammonia and butter. Break a bud and the sour apple jumps first, then cream and candy, then fuel. On the inhale it's sweet and tart; the exhale is buttery with a gassy, peppery finish. One reviewer called it "a buttery sweet flavor with just a hint of diesel"; another described "a mix of old school sour diesel and new school candy." Not everyone loves it — at least one Leafly reviewer found the ammonia note off-putting — so if you're picky about smell, ask to see the jar.

Recreational Effects

Leafly describes the effects as "relaxing but balanced" and lists the top positives as:

  • Euphoric: an early mood lift that reviewers describe as happy and calming.
  • Tingly: a body buzz that shows up early and spreads.
  • Relaxed: the effect that takes over as the session goes on.

The grow profile describes it as "fairly potent but soothing," blending "the calming potency of Apple Fritter with the lively high and sweet taste of Runtz." A Maine dispensary that carries it, Theory Wellness, describes an uplifting, focused effect with a gentle body buzz. Leafly itself says it works "for both chill evenings and morning wake and bakes," but reviewers lean evening — "I feel this strain is best for evening/nighttime" — and several say it turns to couch-lock at higher doses.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a happy, tingly head change — the Runtz side showing up.
  • 15–60 minutes: the peak — euphoric and social, with the body getting heavier and calmer.
  • 1–3 hours: a slow settle into relaxation. At higher doses the Fritter side takes over and the couch starts to look good.

Small doses stay balanced. Big ones get sleepy. That's the most useful thing to know about Apple Tartz.

How Strong Is Apple Tartz?

Strong. Leafly lists 26% THC and calls it higher than average, and the breeder-credited Cannabis Business Times profile says it "consistently tests between 26% and 32% THCA." Leafly reviewers who post their numbers cite batches at 25.7% and 26.8%. That puts Apple Tartz firmly in the top tier for potency, but it isn't a "highest THC strain" record holder — and potency varies more between growers and batches than between names.

Here's what the numbers mean in practice: it's potent enough that experienced smokers call it strong, and the sedation scales with dose. One or two hits read balanced; four or five read like a nightcap.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Apple Tartz against the 26–32% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Apple Tartz vs Similar Strains

  • vs Apple Fritter: the doughy, heavier parent. Apple Fritter is more pastry and earth; Apple Tartz adds candy sweetness and a livelier front end from Runtz.
  • vs Runtz: the candy parent. Runtz is sweeter and more purely fruity; Apple Tartz adds tart apple, cream and more body weight.
  • vs Sour Apple: the green-apple grandparent. Sour Apple is more diesel and more energetic; Apple Tartz is creamier and calmer.
  • vs Fritter Mintz: a fellow Apple Fritter cross, with a cool mint exhale in place of Apple Tartz's candy.
  • vs Apples and Bananas: another apple-dessert hybrid in the same conversation — more tropical banana, less tart.
  • vs Strawberry 2.1: our closest in-stock match. It's candy-sweet fruit with a happy, social lift — but it's strawberry rather than apple, it leans sativa, and it's lighter. If you want the Runtz candy and a more relaxed finish, Cosmic Runtz is the closer feel.

Who Apple Tartz Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: experienced smokers who want a flavorful evening strain; fans of the Runtz and Apple Fritter families; anyone who likes sour candy and gas in the same jar; extract fans.

Poor fit: beginners, anyone sensitive to THC anxiety, and anyone who needs to be sharp for the next few hours — the body weight builds. For a lighter fruit-forward option, Strawberry 2.1 is the easier daytime pick on our shelf.

How to Use Apple Tartz THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the tart apple and cream before the gas takes over. Around 350–375°F keeps the fruit bright; 390–410°F brings out the heavier, relaxing side.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — this one tests high. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full euphoric-to-relaxed arc without sliding into couch-lock. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Low mood: the most-cited reason — about 26% of Leafly reviewers mention depression, consistent with the euphoric onset.
  • Anxiety: about 20% report help, though "anxious" is also one of its listed negatives, so dose matters.
  • Pain: about 19%, mostly tied to the relaxed, tingly body.
  • Sleep: not a Leafly tag, but several reviewers use it at night for exactly that reason.

Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth — Leafly's most common complaint, along with dry eyes.
  • Anxiety — listed among the top negatives, mostly at high doses or low tolerance.
  • Dizziness — also on Leafly's list, usually from overdoing it.
  • Couch-lock — not a side effect so much as the strain doing its job at higher doses. Plan accordingly.

Is Apple Tartz good for sleep? At higher doses, often yes; at low doses it's more balanced and social. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Apple Tartz Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask for the lineage. Real Apple Tartz is Runtz × Apple Fritter from Clearwater Genetics stock. "Apple Tart" with no lineage could be anything.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. A 26–32% claim should come with paperwork. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Apple and candy gas. Depending on phenotype, one side will lead — but you should get tart fruit and fuel both. Pure hay or grass means a rushed cure.
  • Density and frost. Apple Tartz should be tight, heavy buds with trichomes inside the bud, not just on top.
  • A sharp ammonia smell is a known part of the Leafly profile for some cuts, but sour or musty is a storage problem.

Growing Apple Tartz

The best grow data comes from the Cannabis Business Times profile, written by a commercial nursery that grows it. The short version: it flowers fast, stays compact and rewards heavy feeding.

  • Flowering: 52–60 days indoors and in light-dep greenhouses; SeedFinder says about eight weeks. It triggers into flower quickly.
  • Outdoors: full-term harvests from late September to early October — early enough to dodge many rainy-season problems.
  • Yield: 45 g per square foot or more indoors and in greenhouses — average for a commercial cultivar — plus 4–5% rosin from fresh frozen.
  • Structure: squat and bushy with wide, dark leaves, sturdy enough to need little trellising. SeedFinder disagrees and says it stretches in flower, so train it early either way.
  • Feeding: a medium-to-heavy feeder. Push it hard in veg; because it finishes early, the profile notes that by day 35 of flower the feed should match day 42 of a typical 63-day crop.
  • Watch for: mild botrytis (bud rot) susceptibility in damp coastal climates — space plants well and harvest on time.
  • Seeds: feminized only, per SeedFinder, and not currently listed on the breeder's site.
