• Gelato — Leafly's 2018 Strain of the Year, a cross of Thin Mint GSC and Sunset Sherbet. It adds the creamy exhale, the purple color, the resin and, per Nick Corwin, extra potency. Ray says the Zkittlez exhale "wasn't quite as candy, as creamy" until the Gelato went in.

Who actually made Runtz?

The people are the same in every account; the credit shifts. High Times tells the fullest version: Nick discovered Runtz when he crossed Zkittlez with Gelato 33, producing "a dark purple flower with a distinct candy terp profile." His friend Ray Bama and Ray's roommate Yung LB — an up-and-coming rapper and one of the informal "Cookie Boys" — handled the marketing. Leafly's 2020 Strain of the Year report quotes Cookies saying Runtz came from "Ray, Nick, and Yung LB" by 2017, and quotes Cookies co-founder Berner: "I knew Runtz would work."

Cookies' role came after the launch. The original crew couldn't grow enough to meet demand, so Cookies added Runtz to its lineup in 2018 — starting with White Runtz — and, per High Times, eventually became Runtz's exclusive distributor. That's why you'll see "Cookies" on so many Runtz listings, and why Leafly's strain page credits Cookies Fam. High Times describes the Runtz brand as "newly independent" in its later profile.

The 2017 Emerald Cup debut

The crew showed up at the December 2017 Emerald Cup in Santa Rosa with a little over 300 jars, 2,500 Runtz T-shirts and a group of models in Runtz gear, camped in front of the Cookies booth, and sold out in minutes — so much attention that Cookies asked them to leave, according to High Times. The California trademark was filed in early 2018, the same year adult-use sales opened in the state, and by mid-2018 search interest was climbing. Leafly counted more than 100 rap songs mentioning "Runtz" on Genius by 2020, and Yung LB's catchphrase "Runtz up yo life!" went with it.

Runtz Strain Terpene Profile

Leafly's lab-sourced data lists caryophyllene as the most abundant terpene, followed by limonene and myrcene. Leafly's 2020 Strain of the Year report reported a slightly different top three in its lab samples — caryophyllene, limonene and linalool — and called caryophyllene the "chassis" the other two ride on. Caryophyllene is also the one with real research behind it: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

• Caryophyllene: The pepper and dank under the candy — the reason Runtz smells like more than sugar. It's the same lead terpene as in Gelato and GSC, which is why Leafly calls the caryophyllene-limonene pairing the "1-2 killer combo" of the Cookies family.
• Limonene: Bright citrus-candy sweetness, and part of the giggly, talkative lift. Leafly notes it can also read sharp and gassy.
• Myrcene: Earthy, fruity and musky — often credited with the relaxed body that follows the head high.

Some grow sites also list phellandrene and pinene, but without lab data behind them. And there's a known knock on Runtz: the caryophyllene-limonene profile is so common in Gelato descendants that critics say "everything is Gelato nowadays." The Zkittlez fruit is what sets real Runtz apart.

Appearance

Runtz is one of the most photogenic strains on any shelf. Leafly's growers describe "resin-drenched buds that range in color from rich purple to lime green," and Ridgeline Farms' Jason Gellman told Leafly the flowers run purple and pink in summer and as deep as black-purple in the fall. AllBud describes dense, grape-shaped olive-green nugs with thin orange hairs, dark purple undertones and a frosty coat of purple-tinted white trichomes. The nugs are small and chunky — Gellman says it grows "in nice little chunks," and Leafly says the name is partly a nod to that nug size. A thick, sugar-dusted frost blankets everything.

Aroma and Flavor

Crack a jar of Runtz and it's exactly what the name promises: fruit candy. Gellman calls the smell "a syrupy berry cream with plenty of gassy notes" — "it smells like candy, grapes, and gas, and you smoke it and it tastes just like it smells." AllBud hears tropical citrus and sour berries, with a sharp, spicy pineapple note that turns pungent when the nugs are broken up. Leafly's reviewers list tree fruit, apricot and sweet; Barney's Farm adds skunky diesel; PAX describes a smooth, creamy exhale with a little earth underneath.

The smoke is the other selling point. Leafly calls it "creamy" and "smooth and welcoming," and that Gelato cream on the exhale is what separates Runtz from straight Zkittlez. If your bag smells of hay, plain earth or nothing much, it's either old or not Runtz.

How Strong Is Runtz?

Runtz is above average, but the "29% every time" reputation is marketing more than data. The published numbers:

Realistically, a well-grown authentic cut lands in the low-to-mid 20s. Leafly's own team says Runtz's punch comes as much from its terpenes as its THC, and its long-term fans keep smoking it because the high doesn't fade with tolerance. If a "Runtz" bag claims 35%, ask for the paperwork.

Awards: Strain of the Year and an Emerald Cup Win

Runtz's trophy case is real, not just hype. Leafly's Emerald Cup 2019 report says judges "awarded the Cup to Ridgeline Farms of Humboldt County for their version of the cannabis variety Runtz," out of 700 entrants in 14 categories. That same year a White Runtz took 3rd and a Kalya Extracts Runtz rosin placed 7th in rosins. Emerald Cup judge Nikki Lastreto called the winning Ridgeline Runtz "the most beautiful bud I saw in the entire competition."

A year later, Leafly named Runtz its 2020 Strain of the Year, based on search trends, product availability, awards and expert review. Leafly later noted it also dominated the 2022 Michigan People's Choice Cannabis Cup. Both parents had already won big: Zkittlez at the Emerald Cup, Gelato as Leafly's 2018 Strain of the Year.

Why Is It Called Runtz — and Is Your Runtz Real?

The name is candy-aisle wordplay. High Times says the crew picked "Runtz" to capture the candy terps; Leafly adds it nods to the strain's small yield and nug size and to its Zkittlez roots.

That name became a problem. "Runtz is the most renamed strain, the most bootlegged," Ray Bama told High Times — "if you go buy ten eighths from any dispensary or ten eighths from the street, nine of them are going to be Runtz." Leafly reported that anyone can buy counterfeit Runtz mylar bags from overseas and fill them with ordinary Gelato. Growers who got the genetics, which the crew spread widely, often renamed them. Even the "official" phenotypes blur together: Gellman told Leafly he grew White Runtz and Pink Runtz side by side for Cookies and "could not tell the difference."
