Sour Apple Strain: Green Apple Candy Over Diesel
The Sour Apple strain — also sold as Sour Apple Diesel — is a hybrid of Sour Diesel and Cinderella 99. It does what the name says: tart green apple and sweet fruit up front, diesel fuel underneath. The high builds slowly — giggly, uplifted, tingly — then sinks into a heavy, relaxed body that can leave you on the couch. It's also the parent of Apple Fritter, one of the most popular strains of the last decade. It sits in the fruit-and-gas corner of our THCA flower collection.
For a strain with two sativa-leaning parents, Sour Apple confuses a lot of people: databases call it anything from 60% sativa to 80% indica, its THC numbers range from the mid-teens to the mid-20s, and several unrelated seed lines share the name. Below: the real lineage, why it smells like green apple, how the high unfolds, how strong it is, how to use and grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Sour Apple's frosty buds.

- Type: Hybrid. Leafly just says hybrid; AllBud lists 60% indica; Cann Cure Cultivation lists 80% indica; Mango Cannabis says about 60% sativa.
- Ancestry: Sour Diesel × Cinderella 99 — agreed by Leafly, AllBud and nearly every grower page.
- Breeder: Top Shelf Seeds, per SeedFinder and Cann Cure Cultivation. Leafly and AllBud don't name a breeder.
- THC: Leafly lists 18%; AllBud 14–17%; Cann Cure and Mango Cannabis 17–24%.
- CBD: Low — 0% to about 1% depending on the source.
- Aliases: Sour Apple Diesel.
- Offspring: Apple Fritter (Sour Apple × Animal Cookies), Apple Gelato, Sour Apple IBL and Zephyr, per Leafly and SeedFinder.
The parents
Sour Diesel brings the fuel, the pungency and the fast, heady energy. SeedFinder traces the Diesel side of Sour Apple to "Original Diesel," a line descended from Chemdawg crossed with Mass Super Skunk and Sensi Northern Lights genetics. Cinderella 99 — "Cindy 99" — is a fruity, sugary, uplifting strain from the Princess and P94 line, and it's where the sweet fruit comes from. Put a fuel bomb and a fruit-candy sativa together and you get the green apple-over-gas that gives Sour Apple its name.
Lineage conflicts and name-sharers
One grower, Cann Cure Cultivation, lists Sour Diesel × Pure Kush as an alternative cross — which would help explain why some cuts hit so much heavier than either sativa-leaning parent. Most sources stick with Cinderella 99. Watch for name-sharers, too: Humboldt Seed Company's Sour Apple Autoflower is a different plant entirely (Magic Melon Auto × Humboldt Sour Diesel), and other seed banks sell their own "Sour Apple" lines. A jar labeled Sour Apple could be any of them.
Sour Apple and Apple Fritter
Sour Apple's biggest claim to fame is its child. Apple Fritter — Sour Apple × Animal Cookies, popularized by Lumpy's Flowers in California — took the green-apple top note and added a doughy, cookie-family sweetness and much higher potency. Apple Fritter's own offspring include Fritter Mintz. If you like Apple Fritter's fruit, Sour Apple is where it came from.
Sour Apple Terpene Profile
Leafly lists myrcene as the most abundant terpene in Sour Apple, followed by caryophyllene and pinene. AskGrowers' lab-style breakdown also puts myrcene on top, with caryophyllene, humulene, pinene and a little limonene. One terpene-blend company credits farnesene for the green-apple-skin note, but doesn't cite testing for it. Caryophyllene is worth knowing on its own — a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy, fruity, the heavy body finish
Caryophyllene — pepper, diesel bite
Pinene — pine, crisp green edge
Limonene — tart citrus-apple sourness
Typical relative profile for Sour Apple — myrcene-led per Leafly and AskGrowers. Cuts and growers vary; check the batch COA if terpenes are listed.
- Myrcene: Earthy and ripe; it rounds out the fruit and drives the heavy, sofa-bound finish.
- Caryophyllene: Peppery and fuel-edged — the Sour Diesel bite under the apple.
- Pinene: Fresh pine that sharpens the "green" in green apple and helps keep the first hour clear.
- Limonene: A smaller citrus note that adds the sour pucker and the mood lift.
The apple itself isn't a single terpene. It's the combination — Cinderella 99's sugary fruit, pinene's green edge and a sour citrus note — over Sour Diesel's fuel.
Appearance
AllBud describes Sour Apple as "narrow, pepper-shaped, fluffy neon-green nugs" with dark olive leaves, amber hairs and milky trichomes that make the buds sticky. A Leafly reviewer describes bright emerald buds ranging from finger-shaped to spade-like. Expect long, sativa-shaped colas from the Sour Diesel side, bright green rather than purple, with a good coat of resin.
Aroma and Flavor
The nose is sharp and pungent: sour green apple — some reviewers say almost spoiled or fermented apple — over diesel, with sweet fruit and a little pine. Grind it and the fuel gets louder; one Leafly reviewer said freshly ground Sour Apple "smells just like concentrate/hash." Leafly's flavor tags are apple, pear and tree fruit; AllBud adds citrus, lemon and lime.
The inhale is tart green apple, like apple candy. The exhale turns sweeter, with diesel and earth behind it — one reviewer summed it up as "tart apple up front with a very diesel fuel backbone." Some users find the smoke harsh in a joint but very flavorful in a vaporizer, where the apple comes through cleanly on the exhale.
Recreational Effects
Sour Apple is a two-stage high. On Leafly, with nearly 300 reviews and a 4.3 rating, it's described as "extremely potent" and "mostly calming," with these top effects:
- Tingly: Leafly says it "may make your tastebuds tingle," and many users report a warm, tingly body buzz.
- Relaxed: the second half of the ride — heavy, and in Leafly's words, it "may leave you stuck on the sofa."
- Giggly: a playful, social first hour.
- Uplifted and focused: AllBud and Theory Wellness describe a "slowly building uplifting head high" with motivation, focus and euphoria before the body takes over.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–15 minutes: a slow-building head buzz — some describe light pressure behind the eyes. It creeps rather than slams.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — euphoric, giggly, social and creative, with a tingly body.
- 1–3 hours: the body takes over. Cann Cure describes the buzz as "much stronger than that of Sour Diesel," fading into couchlock at higher doses.
Because it builds slowly, the most common mistake is taking more before the first hits land.

Sour Apple's tart green-apple nose comes through cleanest in a clear glass hand pipe.

How Strong Is Sour Apple?
Sour Apple is moderately strong on paper and stronger in practice than its numbers suggest. The published figures:
- Leafly: 18% THC, described as "higher THC than average." One Leafly reviewer posted a batch at 25.22% THC.
- AllBud: 14–17%.
- AskGrowers: about 17–19%, with small amounts of CBG, CBC and THCV.
- Cann Cure Cultivation and Mango Cannabis: 17–24%.
Next to modern 25–30% strains — including its own child, Apple Fritter — Sour Apple is middle of the pack. But reviewers consistently call it potent, and the slow build makes it easy to overdo. As always, potency varies more between growers and batches than between strain names.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Sour Apple batch against the 14–25% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Sour Apple vs Similar Strains
- vs Sour Diesel: the fuel parent. Sour Diesel is gassier, faster and more energetic; Sour Apple is fruitier and ends much heavier.
- vs Cinderella 99: the fruit parent — sweeter, lighter and more purely uplifting.
- vs Apple Fritter: its child with Animal Cookies. Apple Fritter is doughier, sweeter and considerably more potent; Sour Apple is tarter and gassier.
- vs Super Sour Diesel and East Coast Sour Diesel: other Sour D relatives — more fuel, less fruit, more daytime drive.
- vs Sour Space Candy: a high-CBD descendant of the Sour Diesel line with a sour candy-fruit nose — far lower in THC.
- vs Dayglow Mousse: our in-stock fruit-forward pick. It shares the bright, tart nose and the uplifting head, but it's citrus rather than apple, lighter on the diesel and doesn't have Sour Apple's heavy finish — choose it for daytime flavor.
Who Sour Apple Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: fans of sour, fruity and gassy flavors; after-work or lazy-afternoon sessions; people who want a creative, social first hour and a relaxed second; anyone curious where Apple Fritter's apple comes from.
Poor fit: people who need to stay productive for hours — the late body can turn to couchlock — and anyone prone to THC anxiety at the onset. For more diesel on our shelf, Strawberry Glue is a Strawberry Diesel cross; for a heavier finish, try Cosmic Runtz.
How to Use Sour Apple THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the green apple. Around 350–380°F keeps the fruit bright; 390–410°F brings out the diesel and the heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait a full 15–30 minutes — Sour Apple builds slowly. Regular users usually find two or three hits deliver both stages. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Stress: by far the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 41% of reviewers).
- Anxiety: about 30% report help — though some reviewers mention mild anxiety on the come-up, so dose matters.
- Low mood: about 26%, in line with the giggly, euphoric first hour.
- Pain and sleep: Leafly notes patients use it for pain, and the heavy late body makes it an evening pick for some.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry eyes and dry mouth — the most common complaints on Leafly.
- Headache — among Leafly's top-reported negatives.
- Anxiety on the come-up and couchlock later — both reported, especially at high doses.
- Harsh smoke — some users find the inhale rough in joints.
Is Sour Apple good for sleep? Not right away — the first hour is uplifting — but the second stage turns heavy and many people find it relaxing enough for the evening. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Sour Apple Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Smell for apple and gas. Real Sour Apple has a tart green-apple top note over diesel. Gas with no fruit is probably a plain Diesel cut; fruit with no gas may be a different "Sour Apple" line.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Bright green, frosty buds with milky trichomes inside the bud, not just on the surface.
- A proper cure. The apple fades first in old or rushed flower — hay or grass smell means it was rushed.
- Ask about genetics. Sour Diesel × Cinderella 99 is the classic; an autoflower or seed-bank line will smell and hit differently.
Growing Sour Apple
Sour Apple grows tall and stretchy like its Diesel parent. AskGrowers rates it moderate difficulty.
- Flowering: about 61–68 days indoors (roughly 9–10 weeks), per AskGrowers.
- Yield: about 1–2 oz per square foot indoors (roughly 400 g/m²) and 15–20 oz per plant outdoors.
- Height: tall — AskGrowers lists 60–80 inches. Top early and use a trellis or SCROG to control the stretch.
- Smell: very pungent in late flower; plan for carbon filtration.
- Autoflower option: Humboldt Seed Company's Sour Apple Autoflower runs about 75–85 days seed to harvest — but it's different genetics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sour Apple indica or sativa?
Sour Apple is a hybrid. Sources disagree wildly — Mango Cannabis says about 60% sativa, AllBud 60% indica and Cann Cure Cultivation 80% indica. Both parents lean sativa, but the effects end heavy: an uplifting first hour, then a relaxed, couch-friendly body.
Is sour an indica or sativa?
"Sour" strains usually trace back to Sour Diesel, a sativa-dominant strain. Most Sour Diesel crosses lean energetic, but Sour Apple is an exception that finishes heavy.
What is Sour Apple a cross of?
Sour Diesel × Cinderella 99. SeedFinder credits Top Shelf Seeds and traces the Diesel side to the Original Diesel line. One grower lists Sour Diesel × Pure Kush as an alternative.
Is Sour Apple the same as Sour Apple Diesel?
Yes. Leafly lists Sour Apple Diesel as an alias for the same Sour Diesel × Cinderella 99 strain.
How strong is Sour Apple?
Leafly lists 18% THC, AllBud 14–17%, and growers 17–24%, with some batches reported around 25%. It builds slowly and hits harder than the numbers suggest, so wait between hits.
What does Sour Apple taste like?
Tart green apple on the inhale, sweeter fruit and diesel on the exhale, with hints of pear, citrus and pine.
What are the effects of Sour Apple?
Leafly's top-reported effects are tingly, relaxed and giggly. Expect a slow-building, uplifting head high that turns into heavy body relaxation.
Is Sour Apple the parent of Apple Fritter?
Yes. Apple Fritter is Sour Apple × Animal Cookies, according to Leafly and SeedFinder.
Is Sour Apple good for anxiety?
It's mixed. About 30% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but some report anxiety on the come-up. Low doses are the safer approach.
Is Sour Apple good for sleep?
Not right away — the first hour is uplifting. The second stage turns heavy and relaxing, so many people use it in the evening.
How long does Sour Apple take to flower?
About 61–68 days indoors per AskGrowers. It stretches tall, so top and train it early.
