The accident that made it

GG4 was not bred. It happened.

In 2011 Joesy Whales was growing a Chem's Sister plant in Nevada when it hermaphrodited — it threw male pollen sacs, which is normally the moment you pull a plant and cut your losses. He left it. That rogue pollen reached the Sour Dubb and Chocolate Diesel plants nearby, and the seeds that resulted were an unplanned three-way cross that nobody had designed.

The keeper phenotype out of that batch produced so much resin that when Joesy and Lone Watie were trimming it, the scissors stuck shut. The name came out of that room, that day: this stuff is like gorilla glue. Three Cannabis Cup wins followed in 2014, and the accident became one of the most-cloned cuts of the decade.

It is worth sitting with how unlikely that is. A hermaphrodite is a failure state. The strain that defined an entire era of resin-chasing genetics is downstream of a grower deciding not to throw out a plant that had gone wrong.

Why It Is Called GG4 and Not Gorilla Glue Anymore

This is the part almost nobody explains properly, and it is the reason the strain has three names on three different menus.

The Gorilla Glue Company — the adhesive manufacturer — sued GG Strains LLC for trademark infringement. The case settled on 4 October 2017, and the terms are more interesting than a straight loss:

• No damages were paid. The settlement involved no monetary penalty or transaction between the parties.
• GG Strains had to drop the name and the imagery. Everything referencing "Gorilla Glue" or using gorilla imagery had to be gone by 19 September 2018 — a roughly one-year transition window.
• The strains were renumbered, not renamed. Gorilla Glue #1, #4 and #5 became simply GG1, GG4 and GG5. The #4 kept a second identity as Original Glue.
• Licensed producers got 90 days from that September date to strip the word "gorilla" and the associated artwork from their own packaging.
• The domain went across. gorillaglue4.com transferred to the Gorilla Glue Company by 1 January 2020, with the company agreeing not to activate it.
• Historical references stayed legal — the old name can be used on a history page or when preceded by "formerly known as," which is why you still see it everywhere.
• It cost GG Strains about $250,000 to rebrand.

Is GG4 the Strongest Strain? An Honest Answer

No. And the fact that this is one of the most-asked questions about GG4 says more about how the strain was marketed than about the flower.

GG4 commonly tests somewhere between 18% and 28% THC, with most retail batches landing in the mid-20s. That is strong. It is not exceptional in 2026 — there are plenty of modern cultivars testing in the high 20s and low 30s, and a well-grown batch of almost anything on the exotic shelf will get into the same territory.

Where GG4 does lead is resin production, and that is a different thing from potency. Trichome density is what made the strain famous, what makes it a favourite for extraction, and what makes a jar of it look more impressive than a jar of something that actually tests higher. Those two facts get conflated constantly, including by people selling it.

The honest verdict: GG4 is a legitimately excellent strain that has been carrying an inflated potency reputation for a decade. Buy it for the flavour — the diesel-and-chocolate combination is genuinely distinctive and very few modern crosses replicate it — and for the resin. Do not buy it expecting the hardest hit on the shelf, because it is not, and a 2014 Cannabis Cup does not tell you anything about the jar in front of you today.

The thing that should decide your purchase is the lab panel, not the name. GG1 vs GG4 vs GG5: Which Glue Is Which

• GG1 — the first selection from the original accidental batch. Rarely seen commercially; GG4 overtook it almost immediately.
