Gelato 33 Strain

Gelato 33 Strain: The Larry Bird Cut of Gelato

The Gelato 33 strain — better known in California as Larry Bird — is the most famous selection from the original Gelato seed line: Sunset Sherbet crossed with Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies by Mario Guzman of Sherbinskis and the Cookie Fam circle in the San Francisco Bay Area. It smells like sweet citrus and cream with a peppery edge, and delivers a happy, euphoric head high over a relaxed body. It sits squarely in the dessert corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also the most confused name in the Gelato family. "33" isn't a THC number, Gelato 33 isn't a different strain from Gelato, and it isn't the same plant as Gelato 41. Below: where the number comes from, how 33 differs from its sisters, what the potency figures actually mean, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

A 360° look at Gelato 33's dark green, purple-flecked, orange-haired buds.

In short: The Larry Bird cut of Gelato — Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC. Sweet citrus, cream and pepper on the nose; a happy, euphoric head with a relaxed body; and one of the most influential parents of the last decade.

Gelato 33 Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Hybrid. Leafly calls it balanced; AllBud lists the Gelato line at 55% indica / 45% sativa; some seed versions are sold as 60/40 indica.
  • Ancestry: Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC — the same cross as every original Gelato. Gelato 33 is one plant (a phenotype) selected from that seed run, kept alive as a clone.
  • Breeder: Mario Guzman, better known as Mr. Sherbinski, working with the Cookie Fam crew. Conception Nurseries credits Cookie Fam, Sherbinskis and Guzman together; some seed banks credit "Cookie Fam Genetics" alone.
  • THC: Leafly lists 20%; Weedmaps 18–26%; Conception Nurseries reports 29–32% on its clone runs.
  • CBD: Negligible — Leafly lists 0%.
  • Aliases: Larry Bird, Larry Bird Kush, G33, Gelato #33, Gelato Kush, Gelato Cookies.

Why is it called Gelato 33 — and why "Larry Bird"?

The number is a plant tag, not a potency rating. When Sherbinski popped the original Gelato seeds, he numbered the pots to keep track of each plant; the keepers kept their numbers. Later the best cuts got athlete nicknames matched to jersey numbers — Larry Bird wore 33 for the Boston Celtics, so #33 became "Larry Bird." By the same logic, #25 is linked to Barry Bonds, while #41 goes by "Bacio." Seeds Here Now's history of the line lists the officially recognized selections as #25, #33, #41, #43, #47 and #49 — so a menu offering "Gelato 42" deserves a raised eyebrow.

Gelato vs Gelato 33: what's the difference?

"Gelato" is the whole seed line — every plant from Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC. Gelato 33 is one specific plant from it. In practice, when a dispensary sells plain "Gelato," it's very often the 33 cut, because it's the most widely distributed. Weedmaps even lists Gelato 33 and Larry Bird as aliases on its main Gelato page.

Gelato 33 vs Gelato 41 (and 45, 47)

  • Gelato 33 (Larry Bird): the classic — sweeter, creamier and more balanced, the cut most people mean by "Gelato."
  • Gelato 41 (Bacio): the sister cut known for gassier, heavier, more sedating results and big potency numbers.
  • Gelato 47 (Mochi): creamier and sleepier than the 33.
  • Gelato 45: another numbered cut, best known today as a breeding parent (it sits behind Compound Genetics' The Menthol).

One caution on seeds: elite cuts like Larry Bird are clone-only. A plant grown from a pack labeled "Gelato 33" is a new phenotype from that breeder's line, not the original Larry Bird cut. Barney's Farm, for example, sells a Gelato built from Blue Sunset Sherbert × Thin Mint GSC — related, but not the same plant.

Gelato 33 Terpene Profile

Leafly lists caryophyllene as Gelato 33's most abundant terpene, followed by limonene and myrcene; Conception Nurseries also names humulene among the dominant three, and other sources add linalool. Caryophyllene matters beyond flavor — a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, the cookie backbone

Limonene — sweet citrus, mood lift

Myrcene — earthy, relaxed body

Humulene — woody, earthy dryness

Typical relative profile for Gelato 33 — caryophyllene-led per Leafly. Batches vary by grower; some read more citrus-forward.

  • Caryophyllene: the peppery, spicy base inherited from the Cookies side, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
  • Limonene: the bright citrus and sherbet sweetness up top, and a driver of the happy, upbeat onset.
  • Myrcene: earthy and musky; it gives the body its relaxed floor and deepens with dose.
  • Humulene: woody and dry, part of the earthy finish under the cream.

The "gelato" itself — that creamy, dessert-like sweetness — isn't one terpene. It's the combined chemistry of the Sunset Sherbet side, and it's why the whole family reads like ice cream rather than fruit candy.

Appearance

Gelato 33 is a looker. Leafly describes compact buds that run dark green to purple, threaded with fiery orange hairs; growers report the purple deepens when night temperatures drop late in flower. A thick, glassy coat of trichomes gives well-grown buds an almost frosted look. Conception Nurseries notes dense, elongated colas — heavy enough that the plants need support in flower.

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar and you get sweet citrus and sherbet first, then cream, berry and a peppery cookie spice behind it. Break a bud and some cuts show a light fuel note — Conception describes "sweet and fruity" with complexity from "fuel, vanilla, and cream." Leafly's top flavor tags are pepper, citrus and flowery; Weedmaps' users lean berry, diesel and earthy. The inhale is sweet and smooth; the exhale is creamy with a lingering pepper bite. Leafly reviewers describe everything from "sweet gassy fruity with a little note of creme" to cookie dough and vanilla ice cream undertones.

Recreational Effects

Gelato 33 opens with an upbeat, happy head change, then settles into a relaxed, comfortable body. On Leafly, where it has more than 400 ratings, the most-reported effects are:

  • Relaxed: the headline effect — a calm body that never quite turns to couch-lock at moderate doses.
  • Happy: a warm, easygoing mood lift.
  • Aroused: one of its most-tagged effects.
  • Euphoric, giggly and talkative: common in reviews, especially in social settings.
  • Creative: ideas flow during the early peak.

There's genuine disagreement on energy. Leafly's data calls Gelato 33 "mostly energizing" and describes an uplifting post-work high, while Conception Nurseries calls it "deeply relaxing" and an end-of-day strain. Both are true depending on dose: a hit or two reads bright and social; a full session brings the body down.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a happy, giggly head change with a tingle behind the eyes.
  • 15–60 minutes: the peak — euphoric and talkative, with the body loosening up.
  • 1–3 hours: a smooth fade into relaxation; at higher doses, real heaviness and the munchies.

How Strong Is Gelato 33? What Is the Strongest Gelato?

Gelato 33 is potent, but the numbers swing widely by source and grower:

  • Leafly: 20% THC, 0% CBD — "higher THC than average."
  • Weedmaps: 18–26% for the Gelato line.
  • Seed and grow guides: commonly 20–25%.
  • Conception Nurseries: 29–32% on its clone runs.

What is the strongest strain of Gelato? No cut is reliably the strongest — growing, curing and testing move the numbers more than the phenotype does. Gelato 41 carries the reputation for the biggest numbers and the heaviest effect; Gelato 33 is the more balanced, sweeter cut. If potency matters to you, read the lab report, not the name.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Gelato 33 batch against the 18–30% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Gelato 33 vs Similar Strains

  • vs Gelato: not a rival — Gelato 33 is the most common cut sold under the Gelato name.
  • vs Gelato 41: its sister. 41 is gassier and heavier; 33 is sweeter, creamier and more balanced.
  • vs Sunset Sherbet: the fruitier, more relaxing parent. Gelato 33 adds the Cookies spice and structure.
  • vs GSC: the earthier, mintier, heavier-hitting Cookies parent. Gelato 33 is sweeter and more social.
  • vs Ice Cream Cake and Gelato Cake: both are Gelato 33 crossed with Wedding Cake — creamier, doughier and noticeably more sedating.
  • vs Lemon Cherry Gelato: also from the Sunset Sherbet × GSC family, with tart lemon and cherry on top of the cream and a gassier backbone. It's the closest match on our shelf.
  • vs Runtz: Zkittlez × Gelato — candier and fruitier, with a similarly happy, balanced high.

Who Gelato 33 Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: dessert-flavor fans; late-afternoon and evening sessions; social smokers who want a happy high that doesn't race; anyone who likes a body buzz without full couch-lock.

Poor fit: beginners who aren't ready for 20%+ THC, or anyone who wants a clear-headed work strain. For a lighter, daytime option on our shelf, Dayglow Mousse is the brighter pick.

How to Use Gelato 33 THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: a great way to taste the citrus and cream. Around 350–380°F keeps the sweet top notes; 390–410°F brings out the pepper and the heavier body.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full happy-to-relaxed arc; more than that and it turns sleepy. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Anxiety: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (about 28%) — though "anxious" also shows up among its negatives, so dose matters.
  • Stress: about 23% of reviewers.
  • Low mood: about 19%, consistent with its happy, euphoric reputation.
  • Unwinding and sleep: at higher evening doses, many users report the relaxed body helps them wind down.

For a plain-language primer on how terpenes are thought to shape these effects, see Project CBD on terpenes. Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the usual suspects.
  • Dizziness — the top negative on Leafly, usually from taking too much too fast.
  • Anxiety or headache — less common, more likely at high doses or low tolerance.

Is Gelato 33 good for sleep? At low doses it's more happy and social than sleepy; at higher evening doses, the relaxed body makes it a reasonable wind-down strain. If sleep is the goal, its Wedding Cake crosses are heavier. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Gelato 33 Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask where the cut came from. Real Larry Bird is clone-only. "Gelato 33" grown from seed is a different plant — not necessarily worse, but not the original.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Sweet and peppery. A real Gelato 33 has cream and citrus over cookie spice. Flat, grassy or purely earthy flower is a red flag.
  • Color and frost: dark green with purple flecks, orange hairs and trichomes that look glassy, not dull.
  • Density: compact, firm buds — airy, larfy Gelato is usually a poor grow or a mislabeled cut.

Growing Gelato 33

Gelato 33 is a moderate-difficulty grow that rewards attention. The original cut is clone-only; seed versions from various breeders vary in structure.

  • Flowering: about 8–9 weeks indoors (Conception Nurseries lists 60 days); outdoors, harvest in early-to-mid October in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Structure: Conception describes tall plants with long internodes and little side branching, with dense, elongated colas that need trellising.
  • Yield: grow guides report 400–500 g/m² indoors and 500–700 g per plant outdoors.
  • Feeding: prefers a heavy feeding regimen, per Conception.
  • Color: dropping night temperatures to around 70°F from week 6–7 helps bring out the purple.
  • Seeds: several seed banks sell "Gelato 33," and Barney's Farm sells a Gelato line from Blue Sunset Sherbert × Thin Mint GSC — none is the clone-only Larry Bird cut.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gelato 33 indica or sativa?

Gelato 33 is a hybrid. Leafly calls it balanced, AllBud lists the Gelato line at 55% indica, and some seed versions are sold as 60/40 indica. In practice it starts happy and social and finishes relaxed.

What is the difference between Gelato and Gelato 33?

Gelato is the whole seed line from Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC. Gelato 33 is one specific plant selected from it — the Larry Bird cut — and it's the one most often sold as plain 'Gelato.'

Why is Gelato 33 called Larry Bird?

The original Gelato plants were numbered by pot. The keepers were later nicknamed after athletes with matching jersey numbers, and Larry Bird wore 33 for the Boston Celtics.

What is the difference between Gelato 33 and Gelato 41?

They're sister phenotypes from the same cross. Gelato 33 (Larry Bird) is sweeter, creamier and more balanced; Gelato 41 (Bacio) is gassier, heavier and known for bigger potency numbers.

How strong is Gelato 33?

Leafly lists 20% THC; Weedmaps gives 18–26%; some clone growers report 29–32%. It's above average, so start with a small hit.

What is the strongest strain of Gelato?

No cut is reliably the strongest — growing and testing move the numbers more than the phenotype. Gelato 41 carries the reputation for the biggest numbers; check the COA rather than the name.

Is Gelato 33 good for sleep?

At low doses it's more happy than sleepy. At higher evening doses its relaxed body helps many people wind down. For sleep, its Wedding Cake crosses like Ice Cream Cake are heavier.

What does Gelato 33 taste like?

Sweet citrus and sherbet up front, then cream, berry and a peppery cookie spice, sometimes with a light fuel note on the exhale.

Who bred Gelato 33?

Mario Guzman (Mr. Sherbinski) of Sherbinskis, working with the Cookie Fam circle in the San Francisco Bay Area. Some seed banks credit Cookie Fam alone.

What strains come from Gelato 33?

Its best-known children are Ice Cream Cake and Gelato Cake (both crossed with Wedding Cake). Leafly also lists Purple Runtz among its offspring.

Can you buy Gelato 33 seeds?

You can buy seeds labeled Gelato 33, but the original Larry Bird cut is clone-only. Seed-grown plants are new phenotypes from that breeder's line.

Is Gelato 33 good for beginners?

It's friendlier than many 25%+ strains because the high is happy rather than racy, but it's still potent. Take one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes.

Where can I buy Gelato 33 THCA flower online?

Gelato 33 isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. The closest match is Lemon Cherry Gelato THCA Flower — from the same Sunset Sherbet × GSC dessert family, with sweet citrus and cream over gas and a happy-to-relaxed high, ½oz for $69, third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75.
