Blue Gelato Strain: Blueberry Meets the Gelato Family
The Blue Gelato strain is what happens when the 1970s-era Blueberry line meets modern Bay Area dessert genetics. Barney's Farm sells it as Blue Gelato 41 — Blueberry crossed with Thin Mint GSC and Sunset Sherbet, the same two strains behind Gelato. The result smells like blueberry, mint and citrus, opens with a clear, uplifted head and settles into a relaxed body. Many phenotypes turn blue or purple late in flower. It sits in the dessert-fruit corner of our THCA flower collection.
It's also a strain where the databases don't agree. Some list two parents, some list three; one seed company calls it 60% indica, another 80%; listed THC runs from 17% to 25%. Below: what each source actually says, how the high unfolds, what the potency numbers mean, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

- Type: Indica-leaning hybrid. Barney's Farm and AllBud list 60% indica / 40% sativa; Royal Queen Seeds lists its Blue Gelato at 80% indica. Leafly simply calls it a hybrid.
- Ancestry (three-way version): Blueberry × Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies × Sunset Sherbet — the cross listed for Barney's Farm on SeedFinder and for Royal Queen Seeds' version.
- Ancestry (two-parent version): AllBud lists Thin Mint GSC × Blueberry, and Leafly's genetics box shows GSC × Blueberry — although Leafly's own description mentions "DJ Short's old school Blueberry with GSC and Sherbert."
- Breeder: Leafly credits Barney's Farm. Royal Queen Seeds sells a separate Blue Gelato with the same listed parents.
- THC: Leafly 17%; Royal Queen Seeds 23%; AllBud 25% (with a quoted 25–29% average); GrowDiaries 25%.
- CBD: Negligible — Leafly lists 0%, GrowDiaries 0.1%.
- Aliases: Blue Gelato 41, Blue Gelato #41, Blue 41.
- Offspring: Leafly lists Blue Lotus and C-Note as Blue Gelato descendants.
Why the lineage looks different depending on where you read it
The two versions aren't really in conflict. Gelato is itself Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC, so "Blueberry × Thin Mint GSC × Sunset Sherbet" is effectively Blueberry crossed onto Gelato genetics. The "41" in Barney's name points to Gelato 41, one of the best-known Gelato phenotypes — but the breeder lists parent strains, not a specific Gelato cut, so treat the #41 link as likely rather than documented. Databases that list only GSC × Blueberry have simply dropped the Sherbet side.
Is Blue Gelato the same as Blueberry Gelato?
Not necessarily. A PAX guide to "Blueberry Gelato" uses the two names interchangeably but credits that strain to Emerald Family Farms as Blueberry × Thin Mint GSC at around 15% THC — a different breeder from Barney's Farm. If a menu says "Blueberry Gelato," ask who bred it.
Blue Gelato Terpene Profile
Leafly's lab data lists pinene as Blue Gelato's dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and limonene. The seed companies tell a slightly different story: both Barney's Farm's and Royal Queen Seeds' listings name ocimene and limonene. That spread is normal for a three-way cross with several phenotypes — the blueberry-leaning plants and the Gelato-leaning plants won't test the same.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Pinene — pine, fresh, a clear head
Limonene — citrus and tangerine lift
Caryophyllene — pepper and spice from the GSC side
Ocimene — sweet, herbal, fruity top notes
Typical relative profile for Blue Gelato — pinene-led per Leafly; seed-company sheets put ocimene and limonene up front. Expect variation by phenotype.
- Pinene: Fresh pine and herbs — and a likely reason Blue Gelato's start reads clear rather than foggy.
- Limonene: The citrus and tangerine side of the nose, from the Sunset Sherbet half of the family.
- Caryophyllene: Peppery spice, inherited through the GSC line; the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Ocimene: Sweet, herbal and fruity — named by both seed companies as a lead terpene.
The blueberry isn't one terpene. It's the Blueberry parent's overall chemistry, and it's loudest on blueberry-leaning phenotypes.
Appearance
Blue Gelato earns the "blue." Barney's Farm says "many phenotypes display blue/purple flowers, all are smeared in thick resin." AllBud describes conical, neon-green buds with blue undertones, long tapered orange hairs and white trichomes with a bluish tint. The colour is partly genetic and partly grow-dependent — cooler nights late in flower bring the blues and purples out. Growers on GrowDiaries consistently describe dense, crystal-covered buds.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar and blueberry comes first, followed by citrus and a cool, minty edge — Leafly's top flavors are blueberry, berry and mint, and SeedFinder's aroma tags are blueberry, tangerine and mint. Underneath sits an earthy, herbal base. On the inhale it's sweet berry and orange; the exhale is lighter and slightly sour, with pepper and earth from the GSC side. AllBud's reviewers call it "super sweet and citrusy," and at least one notes the sweetness "becomes a little too much after a few hits." A minority of Leafly reviewers say their batch tasted more of fuel than fruit — a sign of phenotype variation or a different cut under the same name. Growers agree on one thing: it's loud. One GrowDiaries reviewer called it the "stinkiest plant" they'd grown.
Recreational Effects
Blue Gelato is a two-stage strain: a clear, uplifted head first, then a calm body. On Leafly, with 70 ratings averaging 4.4 out of 5, the most-reported effects are:
- Uplifted: a mood lift that keeps it social and friendly.
- Relaxed: the body calm that takes over as the session goes on.
- Aroused: Leafly's third-ranked effect for this strain.
The seed sheets lean the same way — Barney's calls it "clear-headed" and "energetic," Royal Queen Seeds "relaxing" and "clear-headed" — while AllBud lists focus, motivation and uplift. Leafly reviewers split: some find it euphoric and creative, others describe "heavily sedating and calming effects." Dose decides which one you get.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a light, clear head change and a mood lift.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — happy and talkative, with the body starting to loosen.
- 1–3 hours: a slow slide into relaxation. At higher doses the indica side takes over and it can get sleepy.
Small doses keep it functional; bigger ones make it an evening strain.

How Strong Is Blue Gelato?
Blue Gelato is a mid-to-high potency strain, but how strong depends heavily on whose number you trust:
- Leafly: 17% THC, 0% CBD.
- Royal Queen Seeds: 23% THC for its Blue Gelato.
- AllBud: 25%, quoting a 25–29% average.
- GrowDiaries: 25% THC, 0.1% CBD.
- Barney's Farm: lists THC as "high" without a figure on reseller pages.
Leafly reviewers reflect that spread. Some call it strong and hard-hitting; others call it mild — one experienced user said it was too weak for their tolerance. That's the clearest sign that potency here depends on the grower and phenotype more than the name. Is Blue Gelato stronger than Gelato? Not reliably — Blue Gelato's selling point is flavor and colour, not record-breaking THC.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Blue Gelato batch against the 17–25% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Blue Gelato vs Similar Strains
- vs Gelato: the base — Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC. Gelato is creamier and more citrus-sherbet; Blue Gelato adds blueberry, mint and more blue-purple colour.
- vs Gelato 41: the phenotype Barney's name points to. Gelato 41 is a single selected Gelato cut with no blueberry in it; Blue Gelato adds the berry, the mint and the colour.
- vs Blueberry: the classic parent — sweeter, simpler, more sedating. Blue Gelato keeps the berry and adds Gelato's frost and modern potency.
- vs Blueberry Cookies and Blueberry Muffin: other blueberry-forward dessert strains. Blueberry Cookies shares the GSC side of the family; Blueberry Muffin is a separate blueberry line without the Gelato genetics.
- vs Blue Dream: also Blueberry-descended, but sativa-leaning and more energetic. Pick Blue Dream for daytime, Blue Gelato for the evening.
- vs Lemon Cherry Gelato: from the same Gelato family, with lemon and cherry in place of blueberry. It has no blueberry, but it has a similar sweet-fruit-over-cream profile and the same happy-then-relaxed arc. It's the closest match on our shelf.
Who Blue Gelato Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: fans of fruit-forward dessert strains, late-afternoon and evening sessions, social smoking, and anyone who likes a clear start before the body settles.
Poor fit: people who need a sharp daytime focus strain — at higher doses it gets heavy — or heavy-tolerance smokers chasing maximum potency, since some batches read mild. For a stronger Gelato-family pick, Lemon Cherry Gelato is the one on our shelf.
How to Use Blue Gelato THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the blueberry and mint before the pepper takes over. Around 350–375°F keeps the fruit and pinene; 390–410°F brings out the heavier body side.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes. Regular users usually find two or three hits enough for the full uplift-then-relax arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 30% of reviewers). One reviewer wrote "you see your anxiety melt away" — but high doses can have the opposite effect.
- Stress: about 22% of Leafly reviewers.
- Low mood: about 16% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud also lists depression.
- Fatigue and focus: AllBud lists fatigue and ADD/ADHD, in line with its "focus, motivation" effect tags.
- Sleep: some reviewers find it sedating at higher doses.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — Leafly's most-reported negatives.
- Dizziness — also on Leafly's list, usually from too much too fast.
- Paranoia — reported occasionally on AllBud, mostly at high doses.
- Unexpected sleepiness — the indica side can take over, so don't plan anything demanding after a big session.
Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Blue Gelato Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask who bred it. Barney's Farm Blue Gelato 41, Royal Queen Seeds Blue Gelato and "Blueberry Gelato" from other breeders aren't guaranteed to be the same plant.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. With listings ranging from 17% to 25%, the paperwork matters. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Blueberry on the nose. A real Blue Gelato smells like berry and citrus with a cool edge. If it smells only of fuel, it's likely a different cut.
- Colour isn't proof. Blue-purple hues are common but grow-dependent; frost, density and smell tell you more.
- A proper cure — hay or grass smell means it was rushed, and the delicate berry notes are the first thing to go.
Growing Blue Gelato
Blue Gelato is a moderate grow. Most GrowDiaries reviewers (11 of 14 who rated it) call it "normal" difficulty, and Royal Queen Seeds says it suits sea-of-green and ScrOG setups. AllBud's lone grower review was less kind — "not a big crop, difficult to grow" and prone to mildew — so keep humidity in check during late flower.
- Flowering: 9–10 weeks indoors (63–70 days per SeedFinder for Barney's Farm); one GrowDiaries grower finished in 58 days.
- Yield: Barney's lists 600–700 g/m² indoors and up to 2.5–3 kg per plant outdoors; Royal Queen Seeds lists up to 600 g/m² indoors and 500–600 g per plant outdoors.
- Height: Barney's version runs tall — 150–200 cm; Royal Queen Seeds' version is more compact at 80–130 cm indoors, up to 200 cm outdoors.
- Colour: cooler night temperatures in the last weeks of flower bring out the blue and purple.
- Smell: very loud in flower — plan for carbon filtration.
- Seeds: feminized photoperiod seeds from Barney's Farm (Blue Gelato 41) and Royal Queen Seeds (Blue Gelato). GrowDiaries has close to 300 grow diaries to learn from.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Blue Gelato indica or sativa?
Blue Gelato is an indica-leaning hybrid. Barney's Farm and AllBud list it as 60% indica / 40% sativa; Royal Queen Seeds lists its version at 80% indica. Effects start clear and uplifted, then turn relaxed.
What is Blue Gelato a cross of?
Most seed companies list Blueberry × Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies × Sunset Sherbet. Since Gelato is Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC, that's effectively Blueberry crossed with Gelato genetics. Some databases list only GSC × Blueberry.
Is Blue Gelato the same as Blue Gelato 41?
Yes — Leafly lists Blue Gelato 41, Blue Gelato #41 and Blue 41 as aliases, and Barney's Farm sells it as Blue Gelato 41. Royal Queen Seeds also sells a Blue Gelato with the same listed parents.
Who bred Blue Gelato?
Leafly credits Barney's Farm, which sells it as Blue Gelato 41. Royal Queen Seeds sells its own version. A strain sold as Blueberry Gelato has been credited to Emerald Family Farms, so ask who bred the cut you're buying.
How strong is Blue Gelato?
Listings range from 17% THC (Leafly) to 23% (Royal Queen Seeds) and 25% (AllBud, GrowDiaries). Reviewers split between strong and mild, so check the COA for total THC.
What does Blue Gelato taste like?
Blueberry and citrus up front, with a cool minty edge, an earthy base and a slightly sour, peppery exhale. Leafly's top flavors are blueberry, berry and mint.
Why is it called Blue Gelato?
Blue for the Blueberry parent and the blue-purple hues many phenotypes show; Gelato for the Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC side. The 41 in Barney's name points to Gelato 41.
Is Blue Gelato good for sleep?
It can be at higher doses — some reviewers describe heavy sedation — but small doses feel clear and uplifted. Use it in the evening if sleep is the goal.
Is Blue Gelato good for anxiety?
About 30% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, the most-cited reason on its page. As with any THC strain, high doses can make anxiety worse, so start low.
Is Blue Gelato good for beginners?
It can be, especially from a batch at the lower end of its 17–25% range. Take one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes.
How long does Blue Gelato take to flower?
About 9–10 weeks indoors (63–70 days per SeedFinder for Barney's Farm). Cooler nights late in flower bring out the blue and purple colour.
Where can I buy Blue Gelato THCA flower online?
Blue Gelato isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. The closest match is Lemon Cherry Gelato THCA Flower — from the same Gelato family, with sweet fruit over cream and a happy-then-relaxed high. It doesn't have the blueberry, but it's the nearest profile on our shelf, from $69, third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75.
