Blueberry Diesel Strain

Blueberry Diesel Strain: Berry Up Front, Fuel Behind It

The Blueberry Diesel strain is what the name promises: DJ Short's Blueberry crossed with Sour Diesel. Crack a jar and you get ripe blueberry first, then sour fuel and skunk underneath. The high is happy and euphoric, with a relaxed body that most reviewers say doesn't tip into couch-lock. Leafly lists it at 19% THC and AllBud at about 15%, but modern cuts and one newer seed line test far higher. It sits in the fruit-and-gas corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also a messy name. No breeder has ever claimed the original cross, some accounts swap in NYC Diesel for Sour Diesel, and at least two unrelated modern lines are sold as "Blueberry Diesel." Below: what each source actually says about the lineage, the terpenes, how the high unfolds, how strong it really is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

A 360° look at Blueberry Diesel's frosty buds.

Blueberry Diesel Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Hybrid. Sources split on the lean: AllBud lists it as indica-dominant (60% indica / 40% sativa), while Leafly describes its effects as "mostly energizing."
  • Ancestry: Blueberry × Sour Diesel, per Leafly and AllBud.
  • Breeder: Unknown. Neither Leafly nor AllBud names one, and Weedmaps notes that no breeder has confirmed the cross.
  • THC: AllBud about 15%; Leafly 19%; Joint Commerce's guide 18–23%, with top phenotypes at 24–26%.
  • CBD and minors: CBD is typically under 1%. Leafly lists about 1% CBG.
  • Aliases: Blueberry Sour Diesel, BBD.

The parents

Blueberry is the fruit side. DJ Short built it in the 1970s from Afghani, Thai and Purple Thai landrace genetics, and it took Best Indica at the 2000 High Times Cannabis Cup. It brings the true-to-fruit blueberry nose, the indica body and, in cool conditions, the blue-purple color. Sour Diesel is the gas side: the sour, skunky fuel aroma and a fast, energetic head high. Blueberry Diesel aims to keep both, and in a good cut you can smell each parent clearly.

Three lines, one name

Weedmaps calls Blueberry Diesel a "name collision." It lists three separate genetic lines:

  • The classic market version: Blueberry × Sour Diesel. Some accounts substitute NYC Diesel for the Sour Diesel parent, and one unconfirmed account pairs Blueberry Cheese with Purple Diesel. This is the version Leafly and AllBud describe, and the one this page is about.
  • A Michigan-grown version: (Blue Dream × Cookie) × Chemchee × Planet Purple F2. Same fruit-and-fuel idea, entirely different parents.
  • Phylos' seed line: Phylos Bioscience sells a feminized "Blueberry Diesel" bred from Banana Punch GMO #2 × Lemonade GMO AF. It's listed as sativa-dominant at 28% ±2% total THC and described as "classic blueberry with the gas turned up."

Joint Commerce dates the classic version to dispensaries and private gardens by the mid-to-late 2000s. Because no one owns it, regional cuts vary, and growers describe three broad phenotypes: a compact, berry-forward one; a balanced one; and a lankier, fuel-dominant one. Don't confuse it with Blue City Diesel, a separate Breeder's Choice cross of Blueberry and NYC Diesel.

Blueberry Diesel Terpene Profile

Leafly lists myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by limonene and caryophyllene. Joint Commerce adds pinene, humulene, ocimene and linalool as supporting terpenes, and puts total terpenes in well-grown samples at roughly 1.0–2.5% by weight. Phylos' seed line lists 2.9%. That myrcene-limonene-caryophyllene trio is a common pattern in fruit-and-gas hybrids: earthy depth, a citrus lift and a peppery bite.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Myrcene — earthy, ripe-fruit depth, relaxed body

Limonene — sweet citrus-berry lift, mood

Caryophyllene — pepper and fuel bite

Pinene — pine, a clearer head

Typical relative profile for Blueberry Diesel — myrcene-led per Leafly. Fuel-dominant phenotypes often read more caryophyllene-forward.

  • Myrcene: Earthy and musky, with a ripe-fruit edge. It's the Blueberry side's signature and gives the relaxed body its floor.
  • Limonene: The sweet citrus note that brightens the berry. Weedmaps users report citrus in about a quarter of flavor notes.
  • Caryophyllene: Peppery and fuel-edged, part of the diesel bite on the exhale. A 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
  • Pinene: A fresh pine note in the background, and part of why many reviewers call the high focused rather than foggy.

The sour fuel smell isn't one terpene. Sour Diesel's gas comes from its whole chemistry, including sulfur compounds that terpene panels don't capture, which is why two jars with similar terpene numbers can smell very different.

Appearance

Blueberry Diesel grows medium-sized, sticky buds in forest to lime green, covered in trichomes and threaded with long orange pistils, per Leafly. AllBud reviewers describe the buds as "tight" and "frosty." Berry-forward cuts can pick up blue and purple hues from the Blueberry side, especially when night temperatures drop late in flower. The fuel-dominant phenotype tends to grow airier, more elongated buds.

Aroma and Flavor

The jar smells like ripe blueberry and dark berry first, then sour skunk and hot fuel underneath. AllBud lists the aromas as blueberry, diesel, pungent, skunky, sour and sweet. Break a bud and the gas gets louder. On the inhale it's sweet blueberry; on the exhale, diesel and a citrus edge. Weedmaps users split their flavor reports almost evenly — blueberry 38%, diesel 38%, citrus 25% — which is a good sign that both parents are really there. If a jar sold as Blueberry Diesel smells only of berry or only of gas, you probably have one of the extreme phenotypes.

Recreational Effects

Blueberry Diesel is a balanced hybrid. The Sour Diesel side lifts the mood quickly, and the Blueberry side relaxes the body. Leafly's most-reported effects, from 384 reviews, are:

  • Euphoric: the headline effect — a quick, cheerful lift.
  • Relaxed: a calm body that reviewers say doesn't turn lethargic at moderate doses.
  • Happy: a light, sociable mood; Weedmaps users mention frequent giggling.

Reviewers on Leafly also report feeling focused, creative and productive — one said it "helps me relax without making me lethargic." AllBud calls the high "peppy but soothing" and "deeply relaxing, with a healthy boost of euphoria." The phenotype matters: the fuel-dominant cut reads more energetic, while the berry-forward one is heavier.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a quick mood lift and a light head change from the diesel side.
  • 15–60 minutes: the peak — happy, social and euphoric, with the body starting to unwind.
  • 1–3 hours: the Blueberry side takes over, settling into calm. Larger doses pull toward the couch.

Most people use it in the afternoon or early evening, when they want to relax without switching off completely.

How Strong Is Blueberry Diesel?

It depends on which Blueberry Diesel you have. The numbers vary more than for most strains:

  • AllBud: about 15% THC.
  • Leafly: 19% THC, which it calls higher than average, plus about 1% CBG.
  • Joint Commerce: 18–23% for most cuts, with top phenotypes at 24–26%.
  • Phylos seed line: 28% ±2% total THC — but that's the separate Banana Punch GMO × Lemonade GMO line.

So the classic Blueberry × Sour Diesel is a mid-to-high potency strain, strong but manageable for regular consumers. Leafly reviewers mostly describe it the same way. A jar labeled near 30% is probably either the Phylos line or a strong grower's cut, and a COA is the only way to know which.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Blueberry Diesel against the 15–28% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Blueberry Diesel vs Similar Strains

  • vs Blueberry: the sweeter, heavier parent. Blueberry Diesel adds sour fuel and a brighter, more social head high.
  • vs Sour Diesel: the gassier, more energetic parent. Blueberry Diesel is fruitier and more relaxing in the body.
  • vs Blue City Diesel: Blueberry × NYC Diesel from Breeder's Choice. It smells softer — sweet berry with hints of diesel and cotton candy — where Blueberry Diesel is sourer and skunkier.
  • vs Blue Dream: also Blueberry-backed, but crossed with Haze. Blue Dream is sweeter and more sativa-like, with no real fuel.
  • vs Purple Diesel: another fruit-over-fuel cross, with grape instead of blueberry and a heavier Bubba Kush body.
  • vs Blueberry Pancakes: our closest match on the shelf. It's an indica-dominant Slurricane × Purple Panty Dropper with blueberry–grape jam, maple and vanilla batter on the nose, from $24. Same blueberry fruit and relaxed body, but dessert-sweet instead of gassy.

Who Blueberry Diesel Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: people who like both fruit and gas; afternoon and early-evening sessions; social time; anyone who wants relaxation without heavy sedation.

Poor fit: anyone who wants a pure daytime energy strain (go to Sour Diesel) or a knock-out sleep strain (go to Blueberry). If the fuel side is what you're after, Permanent Marker (from $29) is the gassier option on our shelf.

How to Use Blueberry Diesel THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the blueberry before the fuel. Around 365–385°F keeps the fruit and citrus; go higher for the heavier body.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15 minutes. Regular users usually find two or three hits brings the full happy-then-relaxed arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: the most-cited reason, at about 34% of Leafly reviewers.
  • Anxiety: about 30% report help, though a few reviewers mention a brief anxious moment on onset.
  • Pain: about 28%, consistent with the relaxed body from the Blueberry side.
  • Low mood: the euphoric, happy headline effects make it a common pick for lifting a flat day.

For a plain-language primer on how terpenes are thought to shape these effects, see Project CBD on terpenes. Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly and AllBud.
  • Dizziness — Leafly's third most-reported negative, usually at higher doses.
  • Brief anxiety — occasionally reported on onset, especially from the fuel-dominant phenotype or at low tolerance.

Is Blueberry Diesel good for sleep? At moderate doses, not really — it's relaxing but cheerful. Larger evening doses lean sleepier. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Blueberry Diesel Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Both parents on the nose. Real blueberry and real fuel. Only one of them suggests an extreme phenotype or a different strain.
  • Ask which line. A good seller knows whether it's the classic Blueberry × Sour Diesel or a newer line like Phylos'.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Stickiness and frost, with long orange pistils and trichomes inside the bud, not just on top.
  • A proper cure — Joint Commerce recommends 58–62% relative humidity. Hay or grass smell means it was rushed.

Growing Blueberry Diesel

Blueberry Diesel grows indoors and outdoors, but sources disagree on difficulty, from easy to tough for beginners. Because clones and seed lines vary, a pheno hunt makes a big difference.

  • Flowering: 63–72 days (about 9–10 weeks) per Leafly; Phylos lists 8–9 weeks for its line.
  • Yield: no major database publishes a firm number. Weedmaps cites secondary reports of about 300 g/m² indoors and 400 g/m² outdoors; Phylos lists 67–87 g per square foot for its line.
  • Height: tends to grow tall, with reports near 6 feet. The fuel-dominant phenotype stretches the most, so top or train early.
  • Climate: a warm, steady climate suits it. Cooler nights late in flower can bring out blue-purple color.
  • Seeds: the classic cross circulates mostly as clones and regional seed lines. Phylos' feminized "Blueberry Diesel" is a different genetic line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Blueberry Diesel indica or sativa?

Blueberry Diesel is a hybrid. AllBud lists it as indica-dominant (60% indica), while Leafly describes its effects as mostly energizing. In practice it's balanced: a quick, happy head lift from Sour Diesel and a relaxed body from Blueberry.

What is Blueberry Diesel a cross of?

Leafly and AllBud list Blueberry × Sour Diesel. Some accounts say NYC Diesel instead of Sour Diesel, and no breeder has confirmed the original cross. Two newer lines also use the name, including Phylos' Banana Punch GMO #2 × Lemonade GMO AF.

How strong is Blueberry Diesel?

AllBud lists about 15% THC and Leafly 19%; most retail cuts land around 18–23%, with top phenotypes higher. Phylos' separate seed line is listed at 28% ±2%. Start with a small hit and check the COA.

What does Blueberry Diesel taste like?

Sweet, ripe blueberry on the inhale and sour diesel with a citrus edge on the exhale. Weedmaps users split their flavor notes almost evenly between blueberry and diesel.

What are the effects of Blueberry Diesel?

Leafly's top reported effects are euphoric, relaxed and happy. Reviewers also mention feeling focused, creative and social, with a calm body that doesn't turn lethargic at moderate doses.

Is Blueberry Diesel good for anxiety?

About 30% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but a few report a brief anxious moment on onset. Low doses are the safer approach.

Is Blueberry Diesel good for sleep?

Not usually at moderate doses — it's relaxing but cheerful. Larger evening doses lean sleepier. For a heavier sleep strain, look at the Blueberry parent.

Is Blueberry Diesel good for beginners?

It's manageable for most people at a low dose, since the classic cut is mid-to-high potency rather than extreme. Take one small puff and wait 15 minutes.

Blue City Diesel is a separate Breeder's Choice cross of Blueberry and NYC Diesel, with a softer, sweeter berry aroma. Blueberry Diesel is usually listed as Blueberry × Sour Diesel and smells sourer and skunkier.

Is Blueberry Diesel the same as Blue Dream?

No. Blue Dream is Blueberry × Haze — sweeter and more sativa-like, with no real fuel note. Both share the Blueberry parent.

How long does Blueberry Diesel take to flower?

About 63–72 days per Leafly, or 8–9 weeks for Phylos' seed line. It tends to grow tall, so top or train it early.

Where can I buy Blueberry Diesel THCA flower online?
