Purple Diesel Strain: Bubba Kush Color, Sour Diesel Gas
The Purple Diesel strain is The Cali Connection's cross of its Pre-98 Bubba Kush with the Original Sour Diesel clone. The breeder's goal was simple: a purple plant with an extreme diesel flavor. It got close. Purple Diesel grows dense, dark-purple buds that smell like sweet grape over sour fuel, and its high starts giggly and euphoric before settling into a relaxed body. Leafly lists it at 15% THC; AllBud reports 22–28%. It sits in the gassy corner of our THCA flower collection.
It also gets mixed up with two different strains: Purple Sour Diesel and Oregon Purple Diesel. They have different parents. Below: the real lineage and where sources disagree, why it turns purple, the terpenes, how the high unfolds, how strong it really is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

- Type: Hybrid, and sources split on the lean. AllBud calls it "slightly sativa dominant (60% sativa/40% indica)," GrowDiaries lists it as sativa-leaning, and SeedFinder's breeder entry says "mostly indica." Leafly calls it a hybrid with "mostly energizing" effects.
- Ancestry: Pre-98 Bubba Kush × Original Sour Diesel. In the breeder's words on SeedFinder: "Purple Diesel is our Pre-98 Bubba crossed to the Original Sour Diesel clone."
- Breeder: The Cali Connection, credited by SeedFinder, AllBud and GrowDiaries. GrowDiaries also lists a Purple Diesel from Greenpoint Seeds, without details.
- THC: Leafly 15%; AllBud 22–28%; GrowDiaries 25%. That's a wide spread, and it's covered below.
- CBD: Negligible. Leafly lists about 1% CBG; GrowDiaries lists 0.1% CBD.
- Aliases: PD (Leafly's abbreviation), Purple D.
- Children: Leafly lists Electric Kool-Aid and Hoodwreck as Purple Diesel offspring. SeedFinder lists Bear Can × Purple Diesel (Exclusive Seeds) and D98 × Purple Diesel (Petepacks).
The lineage conflict: Bubba Kush or Purple Kush?
Leafly, AllBud, SeedFinder and GrowDiaries all give the same parents: Pre-98 Bubba Kush × Sour Diesel. Some long-form guides instead say Purple Diesel is Sour Diesel × SR71 Purple Kush, or name Granddaddy Purple or NYC Diesel as a parent. The SR71 Purple Kush cross matches what AllBud lists for Purple Sour Diesel, a separate 70/30 sativa strain. So the Purple Kush version probably mixes the two strains up. Oregon Purple Diesel is different again: NYC Diesel × Blackberry, and about 90% indica.
Our read: the breeder's own description is the best evidence. Purple Diesel is Pre-98 Bubba × Sour Diesel. If a menu lists different parents, it may be a different strain under the same name. That happens a lot with a name this simple.
Why does Purple Diesel turn purple?
The purple comes from the Bubba Kush side. That was the point of the cross: the breeder wanted a purple plant with Sour Diesel's flavor. Purple buds get their color from anthocyanins, pigments that some cuts express more strongly, especially when nights are cool late in flower. Color alone says nothing about potency. A purple bud isn't stronger than a green one.
Phenotypes
Like most seed-grown crosses, Purple Diesel varies. Growers describe diesel-leaning plants that are taller, brighter and fuel-forward; purple-leaning plants that are denser, darker and sweeter with more grape; and balanced plants in between. That split explains why some reviewers call it energizing and others call it sleepy.
Purple Diesel Terpene Profile
Leafly lists myrcene as Purple Diesel's dominant terpene, followed by limonene and caryophyllene. Long-form grow guides add smaller amounts of ocimene, linalool and humulene. Caryophyllene is worth a note: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy, musky, the Bubba body
Limonene — sour citrus lift from the Diesel side
Caryophyllene — pepper and fuel
Ocimene — sweet, green, fruity
Typical relative profile for Purple Diesel. Myrcene leads per Leafly. Diesel-leaning cuts read brighter and more limonene-forward; purple-leaning cuts read sweeter and heavier.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky. It comes mainly from the Bubba Kush side and gives the high its relaxed body.
- Limonene: Sour citrus. It's part of the Sour Diesel "sour" and goes with the giggly, upbeat start.
- Caryophyllene: Pepper and spice, part of the fuel edge, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Ocimene: Sweet, green and fruity; a supporting note in the grape-berry middle.
The grape isn't one terpene. It comes from the whole chemistry of the purple-leaning cuts, which is why some jars smell like grape candy and others smell mostly like gas.
Appearance
Leafly's growers describe "dense, dark purple buds," and reviewers mention "a beautiful array of purple and dark green with bright orange" hairs. AllBud describes a different look: "medium-sized fluffy airy dark olive green nugs" with purple undertones in the leaves and a "frosty layer of milky white trichomes." Both are real. The purple-leaning Bubba cuts are tight and dark; the diesel-leaning cuts are greener and airier, like Sour Diesel itself.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar and you get sweet grape and berry first, then pungent sour fuel behind it. Grinding a bud makes the diesel louder. Leafly lists diesel, sweet and grape flavors and says it "tastes sour," and its reviewers describe it as "sweet and pungent with a hint of diesel." AllBud adds berry and kush to the aroma and notes a "pungent sour diesel that intensifies upon exhale." In short, the inhale is sweet grape and the exhale is sour gas with an earthy kush finish.
Recreational Effects
Purple Diesel is a mood strain first. On Leafly, with 544 ratings averaging 4.2, the top-reported effects are:
- Giggly: the headline effect. Expect a silly, laughing start.
- Euphoric: a warm mood lift that builds rather than hits.
- Happy: an easy, sociable buzz. Leafly calls it "mostly energizing."
- Creative and focused: on AllBud's list, mostly from diesel-leaning cuts.
- Relaxed: the Bubba Kush side shows up in the body, more so at higher doses.
One reviewer put it this way: "Energizing and relaxing at the same time." Another said it works "without feeling like the high hit you over the head."
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–15 minutes: a slow build. Reviewers say effects "didn't fully set in until 15 minutes," and AllBud notes a "long onset time." Don't re-dose too soon.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak, with a giggly, euphoric, chatty head and a loosened body.
- 1–3 hours: a calm plateau. Purple-leaning cuts drift toward the couch; diesel-leaning cuts stay upbeat.

How Strong Is Purple Diesel?
The sources disagree a lot on potency:
- Leafly: 15% THC, which it still calls "higher THC than average."
- AllBud: 22–28% on average.
- GrowDiaries: 25% THC, 0.1% CBD.
- Long-form grow guides: 18–22% typical, with standout cuts at 23–25%.
A spread that wide usually means different cuts and different growers, not a different strain. Most well-grown Purple Diesel lands in the high teens to low 20s. Reviewers call the high smooth rather than crushing, so it's moderate-to-strong, not a knockout. What matters is the number on the jar in front of you.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Purple Diesel batch against the 15–28% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Purple Diesel vs Similar Strains
- vs Sour Diesel: the parent. Sour D is racier, brighter and more energetic. Purple Diesel keeps the fuel but adds grape sweetness and a softer, rounder finish.
- vs Bubba Kush: the other parent. Bubba is heavy, earthy and sleepy. Purple Diesel is more upbeat and gassier.
- vs Purple Kush: a pure indica with a grape-earth nose and a heavy body. It's the parent of Purple Sour Diesel, which often gets confused with Purple Diesel.
- vs Sour OG: also Sour Diesel crossed with a kush. Sour OG is more lemon-pine; Purple Diesel is more grape.
- vs Granddaddy Purple: the classic grape indica. GDP is sweeter and much sleepier, with no diesel.
- vs Permanent Marker: a modern (Biscotti × Sherb Bx) × Jealousy hybrid with a loud candy-gas nose. It matches Purple Diesel on gas and a relaxed finish, not on grape. It's the closest match on our shelf. For the purple-fruit side, Blueberry Pancakes has a blueberry and grape-jam nose.
Who Purple Diesel Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: people who like gas but find straight Sour Diesel too racy; afternoon and early-evening social sessions; fans of grape-and-fuel flavor; intermediate users.
Poor fit: anyone who needs reliable, heavy sleep, since it's more euphoric than sedating; people who are very sensitive to THC, given how much potency varies by batch; anyone expecting one consistent experience, since phenotype matters a lot here.
How to Use Purple Diesel THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: a good way to taste the grape before the diesel takes over. Around 350–380°F keeps the sweet fruit; 390–410°F brings out the fuel and the relaxed Bubba body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait a full 15–20 minutes. Purple Diesel builds slowly, and re-dosing too early is the most common mistake. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full effect. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Stress: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (42%).
- Anxiety: 35% of reviewers report it helps. Low doses are the safer approach.
- Low mood: 29%, consistent with its giggly, euphoric headline effects.
- Fatigue and aches: AllBud lists fatigue and chronic pain among commonly reported uses.
For a plain-language primer on how terpenes are thought to shape these effects, see Project CBD on terpenes. Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.
Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes: Leafly's top two negatives.
- Dizziness: third on Leafly's list, usually from overdoing it.
- Anxiety or a racing heart: occasionally reported by sensitive users at high doses.
- Couch-lock: one AllBud reviewer warns it can come on "if you're on your butt," mainly with purple-leaning cuts.
Is Purple Diesel good for sleep? Sometimes. Purple-leaning cuts and bigger doses relax the body, but most reviewers find it more upbeat than sleepy. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Purple Diesel Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Grape and gas. A real Purple Diesel has both. Pure fuel with no sweetness is probably just Sour Diesel; pure grape with no gas suggests a different purple strain.
- Ask about the lineage. If the seller says SR71 Purple Kush or NYC Diesel × Blackberry, it's likely Purple Sour Diesel or Oregon Purple Diesel instead.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. With reports ranging from 15% to 28%, the paperwork matters. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Don't pay extra for color. Purple shows the Bubba side, not quality. Look for frost and trichomes inside the bud.
- A proper cure: sticky but not wet, and no hay or grass smell.
Growing Purple Diesel
The breeder calls it a "very solid yielding plant," and SeedFinder lists it as an indica-structured hybrid, sold as feminized seed. GrowDiaries rates it moderately difficult but forgiving with normal care.
- Flowering: about 63–66 days per the breeder (Leafly says around 8 weeks). Diesel-leaning plants finish first; purple-leaning plants can run to about 70 days. GrowDiaries' 88-day figure is an outlier.
- Yield: medium to large; GrowDiaries lists up to about 400 g/m², and grow guides report 400–550 g/m² indoors with training.
- Height: medium-tall. Expect it to stretch 1.5–2× after the flip, so top or train early.
- Color: cooler nights late in flower help purple-leaning plants show their color.
- Outdoors: harvest around early to mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Purple Diesel indica or sativa?
It's a hybrid, and sources disagree on the lean. AllBud lists it as 60% sativa, GrowDiaries as sativa-leaning, and SeedFinder's breeder entry as mostly indica. Leafly says its effects are mostly energizing. Diesel-leaning cuts feel more sativa; purple-leaning cuts feel more indica.
What is Purple Diesel a cross of?
Pre-98 Bubba Kush × Sour Diesel. The breeder, The Cali Connection, describes it as 'our Pre-98 Bubba crossed to the Original Sour Diesel clone.' Some guides list SR71 Purple Kush instead, but that lineage belongs to Purple Sour Diesel, a separate strain.
Who bred Purple Diesel?
The Cali Connection, per SeedFinder, AllBud and GrowDiaries. The breeder's goal was a purple plant with an extreme diesel flavor.
How strong is Purple Diesel?
Reports range widely. Leafly lists 15% THC, AllBud 22–28%, and GrowDiaries 25%. Most well-grown batches land in the high teens to low 20s, and reviewers describe the high as smooth rather than overwhelming. Check the COA for the batch you're buying.
What does Purple Diesel taste like?
Sweet grape and berry on the inhale, then sour diesel and earthy kush on the exhale. Leafly lists diesel, sweet and grape, and says it tastes sour.
What are the effects of Purple Diesel?
Leafly's top-reported effects are giggly, euphoric and happy. The high builds over about 15 minutes, peaks with an upbeat, social head, and eases into a relaxed body.
Why is Purple Diesel purple?
The color comes from the Bubba Kush parent. Anthocyanin pigments show more in some cuts, especially with cool nights late in flower. The color doesn't affect potency.
Is Purple Diesel the same as Purple Sour Diesel?
No. Purple Diesel is Pre-98 Bubba Kush × Sour Diesel. AllBud lists Purple Sour Diesel as Sour Diesel × SR71 Purple Kush, a 70/30 sativa. Oregon Purple Diesel is different again: NYC Diesel × Blackberry.
Is Purple Diesel good for sleep?
Not reliably. Purple-leaning cuts and bigger doses can relax you toward the couch, but most reviewers find it more upbeat than sedating.
Is Purple Diesel good for anxiety?
About 35% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety and 42% cite stress. Diesel-leaning cuts can feel racy at high doses, so start low.
Is Purple Diesel good for beginners?
It's one of the gentler diesel strains, since the Bubba side rounds it off. But it builds slowly and potency varies, so take one small puff and wait 15–20 minutes.
How long does Purple Diesel take to flower?
About 63–66 days indoors per the breeder, or roughly 8–9 weeks. Purple-leaning plants can run a little longer, and outdoor harvests come around early to mid-October.
Where can I buy Purple Diesel THCA flower online?
Purple Diesel isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. The closest gas-forward match is Permanent Marker THCA Flower: loud candy-gas with a relaxed, heavier finish, from $29, third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75. It isn't grape, though. For the purple-fruit side, try Blueberry Pancakes (from $24), and for straight fuel, Mule Fuel (from $65).
