Ghost OG Strain: The OG Kush Cut That Haunts the Family Tree
The Ghost OG strain is one of the classic clone-only cuts of OG Kush — a single plant kept alive by cuttings for decades and named after the grower who preserved it. It smells like lemon-lime and pine over diesel and earth, starts with a quick, giggly head lift, and finishes in a heavy, calm body. It's also a major parent: Rare Dankness built Ghost Train Haze on it, and Banana Kush is Ghost OG × Skunk Haze. Its lane is the gassy, kush end of our THCA flower collection.
Ghost OG is also one of the most muddled entries in strain databases. Some list it as a pure OG Kush cut, others as OG Kush × Afghani, and at least one seed bank says OG Kush × Kosher Kush. Below: what each source actually says, where the "Ghost" name comes from, real potency numbers, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

Ghost OG Strain Genetics & Lineage
- Type: Hybrid. Leafly lists it as a hybrid; AllBud, Illicit and Verilife call it indica-dominant at roughly 70% indica. Connected Cannabis Co., which grows a premium indoor version, classifies its cut as a sativa hybrid. Most consumers experience it as indica-leaning.
- Ancestry: The consensus — Leafly, Klutch, Proper Cannabis, Legacy and Strainpedia — is that Ghost OG is a selected phenotype (a "cut") of OG Kush, not a new cross. AllBud, Weedmaps and Illicit list it as OG Kush × Afghani, and Verilife credits that cross to Dark Heart Nursery. Blimburn Seeds lists OG Kush × Kosher Kush. None of those cross claims comes with a documented breeding record.
- Breeder: No single breeder. It's a preserved clone, and the people credited with passing it along differ by source (see below).
- THC: Leafly 19%; AllBud 18–24%; Weedmaps 19–29%; Illicit 20–30% on its own batches.
- CBD: Effectively none (Leafly lists 0%). Strainpedia reports 0.5–1.2% CBG.
- Aliases: Ghost OG Kush, OG Ghost and "the Ghost cut."
Who is "Ghost"? The origin story
The name belongs to a grower, not a breeder. Two versions circulate:
- The Josh D version. Per Klutch Cannabis, Ghost OG was "once a cutting of Josh D's original OG Kush" that a grower in the Pacific Northwest kept for about two decades. Klutch says the cut's expression drifted over that time — "commonly believed to be epigenetic changes" — into "slightly larger buds with a sweeter, spicier flavor profile," and that it was named for Josh's friend Ghost, who gave the transformed cutting back to him. A torches.nyc profile tells the same story, placing Ghost in Washington State and noting the two "reportedly met in person for the first time only a few years ago."
- The OrgnKid version. Weedmaps says lore credits the breeder OrgnKid with handing an OG Kush cutting to a grower named Ghost, and Proper Cannabis lists its clone as the "ORGNKID cut."
Strainpedia adds an unsourced claim that the cut traces to the early-1990s Florida scene. We couldn't confirm Ghost's identity or which story is right; the common thread is that Ghost OG is an OG Kush clone a grower named Ghost preserved and spread.
Ghost OG seeds aren't the clone
Because the original is clone-only, seed versions are new crosses. SeedFinder lists Apothecary Genetics' Ghost OG as the Ghost cut crossed with a Joe's OG Kush male — "Male OG X GHOST OG" — and calls it a strong indica. Blimburn sells a feminized Ghost OG it describes as OG Kush × Kosher Kush. That's one reason Ghost OG numbers vary so much from jar to jar.
Ghost OG Terpene Profile
Leafly lists myrcene as Ghost OG's dominant terpene, followed by limonene and caryophyllene. Strainpedia's tested ranges match that order: myrcene 0.6–1.1%, limonene 0.4–0.8%, caryophyllene 0.3–0.6%. Legacy also lists linalool, humulene and pinene. Caryophyllene stands out on its own — a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy kush, the heavy body
Limonene — lemon-lime lift
Caryophyllene — pepper and fuel
Pinene — pine needles, clarity
Typical relative profile for Ghost OG — myrcene-led per Leafly, with Strainpedia's tested ranges in the same order. Seed-grown versions can shift.
- Myrcene: Earthy, musky kush — and the reason the second half of the high feels so heavy.
- Limonene: The lemon-lime top note that sets Ghost OG apart from earthier OG cuts, and part of the giggly first lift.
- Caryophyllene: The peppery, fuel-edged spice on the exhale, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Pinene: The pine-needle freshness, and part of why the head stays fairly clear early on.
That citrus-over-earth balance is the Ghost OG signature. Strainpedia describes it as having "a more pronounced citrus profile" than SFV OG or Tahoe OG.
Appearance
Ghost OG looks like a classic OG: dense, medium-sized nugs in bright to forest green, bright orange pistils, and a heavy, glassy coat of trichomes. AllBud's reviewers note green, yellow and purple tones on some batches, and seed-bank growers describe rock-hard, resin-soaked buds. Strainpedia notes the resin holds up well in solventless extraction.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar of Ghost OG and the first hit is citrus — lemon-lime, some say almost like lemon-lime soda — over damp earth and pine. Break a bud and diesel and pepper come forward. On the inhale it's thick, earthy kush and gassy pine; the exhale is tart fuel and bright lemon-lime with a faintly sweet finish. Weedmaps' users break the flavor down as diesel (38%), earthy (34%) and pine (28%); Leafly lists citrus, pine and earthy. Some indoor cuts add an unusual creamy, cocoa-like exhale, per a torches.nyc review of Connected's version.
Recreational Effects
Almost every Ghost OG review describes the same two-phase high: a mental lift first, then a strong body. Illicit puts it best — "initially giggly, but it will haunt you later with a full-body high." Leafly's most-reported effects, from 700-plus ratings:
- Relaxed: the headline effect — a deep calm that quiets mental chatter.
- Sleepy: especially at higher doses or late in the evening.
- Tingly: the warm body buzz that settles into the limbs.
- Euphoric and happy: the early lift AllBud and Weedmaps highlight.
- Hungry: AllBud and Blimburn both note an appetite boost.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a giggly, uplifted head change. Verilife warns that the potency builds and can catch low-tolerance users off guard.
- 20–60 minutes: the peak — the head softens and a heavy, warm body takes over.
- 1–3 hours: a long, calm tail. Legacy says it "doesn't force sleep," but at higher doses it pulls you toward the couch.
Low doses keep it social; big doses make it a nightcap.

How Strong Is Ghost OG? Which OG Strain Is the Most Powerful?
Ghost OG is potent but not a record-chaser. The numbers depend heavily on the source and whether it's the clone or a seed version:
- Leafly: 19% THC — "higher than average."
- AllBud: 18–24%, with user-reported lab results as high as 27.6% THC.
- Weedmaps: 19–29%.
- Illicit (grower): 20–30% on its own batches.
- Strainpedia: 20–24% delta-9 THC in tested ranges.
So which OG strain is the most powerful? No single OG holds that title — potency varies more by grower and batch than by name. Ghost OG's claim to fame is genetic, not numerical: crossed with Neville's Wreck it became Ghost Train Haze, which Verilife notes was named High Times' most potent strain in 2012. A well-grown Ghost OG is a solid mid-20s OG with a heavier body than most.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Ghost OG batch against the 18–29% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Ghost OG vs Similar Strains
- vs OG Kush: the source plant. Ghost OG is a cut of it, usually described as sweeter and more citrus-forward with a slightly heavier body.
- vs SFV OG and Tahoe OG: sibling OG cuts. Strainpedia says Ghost OG has more citrus and a slightly more grounding effect than either; Tahoe is the sleepiest.
- vs Fire OG and Skywalker OG: other OG Kush descendants. Fire OG is lemon-fuel and stronger-hitting; Skywalker is sweeter and more sedating.
- vs Ghost Train Haze: its sativa-leaning child (Ghost OG × Neville's Wreck) — far more energetic and heady.
- vs Banana Kush: Ghost OG × Skunk Haze — the same relaxing finish with sweet banana on top.
- vs Mule Fuel: not an OG — GMO Cookies × Lurch — but the closest flavor match on our shelf: gassy, earthy diesel with pepper, citrus and pine, and an indica-leaning body.
- vs Permanent Marker: a modern (Biscotti × Sherb Bx) × Jealousy hybrid with a chemical-gas nose instead of lemon-pine. It matches Ghost OG on potency and evening body, not on flavor.
Who Ghost OG Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: OG fans; experienced smokers who want a calm, heavy evening strain that still starts sociable; anyone who likes citrus-and-fuel flavors.
Poor fit: beginners who might mistake the light first minutes for the whole high, and anyone who needs to stay productive. For more daytime energy, look at its child, Ghost Train Haze, or Dayglow Mousse on our shelf.
How to Use Ghost OG THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the lemon-lime over the kush. Around 350–380°F keeps the citrus and pine; 390–410°F brings out the heavier, peppery body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait a full 15–20 minutes — Ghost OG's body arrives after the head. Regular users usually find two or three hits enough for the full arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Stress: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (about 34%).
- Anxiety: about 31% of reviewers — consistent with its calming, relaxed headline effect.
- Pain: about 30%; AllBud's listings add headaches and muscle tension.
- Sleep: "sleepy" is one of its top effects, and many reviewers use it at night.
- Appetite: reported by AllBud and Blimburn.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — Leafly's most common negatives.
- Headache — also among Leafly's reported negatives, usually from overdoing it.
- Couch-lock and grogginess — at high doses, and some AllBud users mention a crash after several hours.
- Getting caught off guard — the slow-building body can overshoot if you redose too fast.
Is Ghost OG good for sleep? For many people, yes — especially in the evening or at higher doses, though Legacy notes it doesn't force sleep at small ones. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is It Real Ghost OG? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask: clone or seed? The original Ghost cut is clone-only. A seed-grown "Ghost OG" is a cross and may taste different.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Citrus and fuel. Real Ghost OG has a lemon-lime top over earthy, gassy kush. All earth and no citrus suggests another OG cut.
- Dense, frosty buds with resin on the sugar leaves, not fluffy or leafy flower.
- A proper cure — sticky but not wet; hay or grass smell means it was rushed.
Growing Ghost OG
Ghost OG grows like the OG it is — lanky, hungry and stretchy. Strainpedia rates it moderate-to-experienced; Blimburn's own FAQ recommends it for intermediate to experienced growers.
- Flowering: about 8–9 weeks indoors per Weedmaps and Strainpedia; Apothecary's seed line about 55–60 days; Blimburn says 8–10 weeks.
- Yield: moderate. SeedFinder lists 150–300 g/m² for the Apothecary line; Blimburn claims 550–650 g/m² indoors and 500–600 g per plant outdoors.
- Height and stretch: medium to tall — it can nearly double in the first three weeks of flower, so trellis and lollipop early.
- Climate: warm and dry. Keep humidity under about 45% in the last three weeks to protect dense buds.
- Outdoors: harvest around early October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Clones vs seeds: the true Ghost cut circulates as clones; seeds from Apothecary Genetics and others are crosses.
