Banana Kush Strain

Banana Kush Strain: Ripe Banana Over OG Funk

The Banana Kush strain is a hybrid of Ghost OG — a phenotype of OG Kush — and Skunk Haze. Leafly puts it plainly: it "tastes and smells like a bushel of fresh bananas." Under the fruit sits classic OG earth and spice, and the high follows the same two-part shape: talkative and euphoric first, then a heavy, relaxed body that often ends in sleep. It belongs in the fruit-forward, wind-down corner of our THCA flower collection.

Banana Kush is also older and less documented than its name recognition suggests. Most databases list no breeder at all; SeedFinder credits Crockett Family Farms. Lineage sources mostly agree, but not entirely. Below: what's actually known about its origin, the terpene profile behind the banana, how the high unfolds, how strong it really is, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

Banana Kush Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Hybrid. Leafly lists it simply as a hybrid; AllBud calls it indica-dominant at 60% indica / 40% sativa. The reported effects — relaxed, sleepy by the end — read indica-leaning.
  • Ancestry: Ghost OG × Skunk Haze, per Leafly, SeedFinder and GrowDiaries. AllBud lists the OG parent simply as OG Kush — not a real contradiction, since Ghost OG is a selected OG Kush phenotype.
  • Breeder: SeedFinder credits Crockett Family Farms. Leafly lists no breeder, and other guides describe it only as a West Coast strain with no single credited breeder.
  • THC: Leafly lists 21%; AllBud 18–25%; GrowDiaries growers report an average around 19%.
  • CBD: Negligible — Leafly lists 0%, AllBud about 0.1%, with around 1% CBN.

The origin story — what's known and what isn't

SeedFinder's breeder entry for Crockett Family Farms describes crossing "an OG Kush cut" with "a local Skunk variety" descended from early-1970s Haze genetics, calling the result "a freak of nature." Per that entry, the cross was first named for its "faint banana smell" and later renamed "Private Reserve" because of a naming conflict, and it was never released by them as feminized seeds.

That leaves a gap: Banana Kush the name kept circulating as clone-only cuts and, later, as seed lines from many seed banks — GrowDiaries lists more than a dozen sellers. A Westword profile says it gained prominence in the early 2000s and quotes a home grower who wasn't sure whether his cut was Ghost OG × Skunk Haze or OG Kush × something unknown. In short: the Ghost OG × Skunk Haze story is the consensus, Crockett Family Farms is the only credited breeder we found, and two "Banana Kush" jars from different sources may not be the same plant.

Why the Skunk Haze side matters

Skunk Haze brings together two of the oldest lines in modern cannabis — Skunk #1 and Haze. That's where the "Haze zest" Westword describes comes from, and why Banana Kush starts sociable and heady before the OG side takes over. SeedFinder lists 67 direct descendants, including Banana Blast, Banana Bomb and Banana Cream Cake — most of the "banana" strains on today's menus trace back here.

Banana Kush Terpene Profile

Leafly lists limonene as Banana Kush's dominant terpene, followed by myrcene and caryophyllene. That combination explains the strain well: limonene gives the bright, sweet fruit top note and the upbeat start, myrcene the earthy, heavy body, and caryophyllene the peppery OG spice on the finish.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Limonene — sweet citrus-fruit lift

Myrcene — earthy, heavy body

Caryophyllene — pepper, OG spice

Humulene — woody, earthy dryness

Typical relative profile for Banana Kush — limonene-led per Leafly. Kush-forward cuts read spicier and more sedating; banana-forward cuts sweeter.

  • Limonene: The dominant terpene — the sweet, fruity brightness on top and a driver of the talkative, euphoric first hour.
  • Myrcene: Earthy and musky, and the most likely reason the body gets heavy as the high settles.
  • Caryophyllene: The peppery spice from the OG side, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
  • Humulene: A woody, earthy minor note that matches the "woody" flavor AllBud lists.

The banana itself isn't one terpene. It's the whole chemistry of the plant — fruit-forward terpenes over an OG base — which is why the banana is loud in some cuts and only "faint," as the breeder put it, in others.

Appearance

Banana Kush grows dense, chunky buds in bright lime to yellow-green, threaded with orange pistils and a coat of white trichomes. Westword describes "bright lime green, dense buds"; AllBud's reviewers say "dense, light green and frosted with white hairs." The yellow-green cast in some cuts fits the name. Growers note the plant's big, broad leaves, so a careful trim matters for bag appeal.

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar of good Banana Kush and the first hit is sweet, ripe banana and tropical fruit, then earthy OG funk and a peppery edge behind it. Westword's description is hard to beat: "a smooth, tropical burst of fruity sweetness, OG funk and Haze zest." Breaking a bud makes the banana louder.

On the inhale it's sweet and fruity; on the exhale, earth and soft spice. Leafly's tasters list tree fruit, tropical and sweet; AllBud adds woody. Westword calls the smoke "fruity, spicy and mellow, like a piece of gum," and GrowDiaries growers compare it to "a fruit smoothie and banana bread with a pinch of citrus." Does Banana Kush actually taste like banana? In a well-grown, well-cured batch, yes — though the flavor usually reads as banana candy or banana bread more than fresh fruit, and it fades fast in a stale bag.

Recreational Effects

Banana Kush is a two-stage hybrid. On Leafly, with more than 1,200 reviews, the most-reported effects are:

  • Relaxed: the top effect — a calm, loose body that builds over time.
  • Talkative: the Skunk Haze side makes the first hour social.
  • Euphoric: a steady mood lift rather than a racing head high.
  • Creative and happy: listed by AllBud alongside a pronounced body high.
  • Sleepy: AllBud calls it "highly sleep inducing," especially later in the session.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a light, sociable lift — easy conversation, good mood.
  • Up to 60–90 minutes: per Westword, the indica side arrives about an hour to an hour and a half in, with a heavy body high.
  • 2–3 hours: a slow settle toward the couch or bed. Higher doses get there faster.

That curve is why most people treat Banana Kush as an evening strain: the social first hour fits dinner or a movie, and the finish fits bedtime.

How Strong Is Banana Kush?

Banana Kush is solidly mid-to-high potency by modern standards, not a record-setter. The published numbers:

  • Leafly: 21% THC, 0% CBD.
  • AllBud: 18–25% THC, about 0.1% CBD and 1% CBN.
  • GrowDiaries: about 19% on average, from growers' own reports.
  • Westword: one tested Colorado sample came in over 21%.

So it's strong enough to put a newer user down, but it's the shape of the high — sociable, then heavy — more than raw THC that people remember. Many newer dessert and gas strains now test higher.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Banana Kush batch against the 18–25% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Banana Kush vs Similar Strains

  • vs OG Kush: the OG side of the family. OG Kush is gassier, piney and more lemon-fuel; Banana Kush trades some gas for sweet fruit.
  • vs Strawberry Banana: the other famous banana strain. It's sweeter and more candy-like; Banana Kush is earthier, with more OG spice.
  • vs Bubba Kush: both are evening kush strains, but Bubba is chocolate-coffee and earthy where Banana Kush is fruity, and Bubba is heavier from the start.
  • vs Lemon Skunk: shares the Skunk ancestry and the limonene-led brightness, but it's a daytime, citrus strain without the heavy finish.
  • vs Straw Gua Mintz: our closest in-stock match on flavor — a Kush Mints cross with strawberry, guava and banana up front and a cool mint exhale. It's sativa-leaning, so expect a brighter, more daytime high than Banana Kush's sleepy finish.

Who Banana Kush Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: evening smokers who want flavor first; anyone winding down after work; fans of fruit-forward strains who still want a kush body.

Poor fit: someone who needs to stay sharp and productive for hours, or a first-timer who might mistake the light start for the whole high and keep smoking. For a brighter, daytime fruit profile, Straw Gua Mintz is the better pick on our shelf.

How to Use Banana Kush THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to actually taste the banana. Around 340–370°F keeps the fruit; 390°F and up brings out the earthy OG body and the heavier effect.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait at least 15–30 minutes — the heavy second stage is easy to underestimate. Regular users usually find two or three hits gets the full arc, and a little more turns it into a sleep strain. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 33% of reviewers).
  • Anxiety: about 29% of Leafly reviewers report help — low doses are the usual approach.
  • Pain: about 25% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud's users mention aches and headaches.
  • Sleep: AllBud's reviewers describe it as sleep-inducing and suggest using it about an hour before bed.

Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — Leafly's two most-reported negatives.
  • Headache — third on Leafly's list, usually from overdoing it.
  • Heavy sedation — reviewers note strong couch-lock and a longer-than-expected tail at higher doses.

Don't plan to drive or work after a session. Talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Banana Kush Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • You should smell banana. If the jar smells like generic earthy kush with no fruit, it's a weak cut, a stale bag, or a different plant.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. For Banana Kush, 18–25% is the realistic range; much higher claims without paperwork are marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Dense, lime-to-yellow-green buds with orange pistils and frost that reaches into the bud.
  • A clean trim. The plant is leafy; a lazy trim leaves harsh, grassy smoke.
  • A proper cure. Hay smell means rushed drying — and the banana is the first thing to go.

Growing Banana Kush

The Leafly grow guide rates Banana Kush moderate difficulty and says it does best indoors, where a stable environment produces the best yield.

  • Flowering: about 8–9 weeks indoors (Leafly's grow guide; Westword's grower reported around 8).
  • Yield: moderate to high.
  • Height: medium — manageable in small spaces.
  • Climate: keep it between 68 and 80°F, and humidity around 40% in flower to prevent mold.
  • Feeding: it "can be fed heavily"; watch for powdery mildew.
  • Training: prune for airflow and support the colas. Expect a lot of leaf trimming at harvest.
  • Seeds: many seed banks sell a Banana Kush, including feminized and autoflower versions — the genetics vary by seller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Banana Kush indica or sativa?

Banana Kush is a hybrid. Leafly lists it as a hybrid, while AllBud calls it indica-dominant at 60% indica. Its effects — a sociable start and a heavy, often sleepy finish — lean indica, and most people use it in the evening.

What is Banana Kush a cross of?

Ghost OG × Skunk Haze, according to Leafly, SeedFinder and GrowDiaries. AllBud lists the OG parent as OG Kush; Ghost OG is an OG Kush phenotype.

Who bred Banana Kush?

SeedFinder credits Crockett Family Farms, which describes crossing an OG Kush cut with a local Skunk line descended from early-1970s Haze. Many other databases list no breeder, and seed versions from many seed banks vary.

Does Banana Kush taste like banana?

A good batch does — sweet, ripe banana and tropical fruit on the inhale, earthy OG spice on the exhale. The banana fades quickly in poorly cured or stale flower.

How strong is Banana Kush?

Leafly lists 21% THC and AllBud 18–25%. It's mid-to-high potency, and the heavy second stage can surprise newer users, so start small.

About 29% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, and 33% cite stress. Low doses are the safer approach, since any THC strain can cause anxiety in some people.

Is Banana Kush good for beginners?

It can be, in small amounts. The light start is easy to misjudge, so take one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes before more.

How long does Banana Kush take to flower?

About 8–9 weeks indoors, according to Leafly's grow guide. It does best indoors at 68–80°F with low humidity in flower.

What's the difference between Banana Kush and Strawberry Banana?

Strawberry Banana is sweeter and more candy-like; Banana Kush is earthier, with OG spice and a heavier, sleepier finish.

Where can I buy Banana Kush THCA flower online?
