Purple Churro Strain: Cinnamon, Cream and Purple Frost
The Purple Churro strain is a modern dessert hybrid from Compound Genetics, the Portland breeder behind Apples & Bananas and Grape Gas. It crosses a cinnamon-forward cut of Compound's Horchata with Apples & Bananas, and it smells the way the name promises: cinnamon sugar, creamy vanilla and baked apple, with dark purple sugar leaves and a heavy coat of frost. Expect a happy, uplifted onset that settles into a weighty body high, at potency most labels put in the high 20s to low 30s. It fits the dessert corner of our THCA flower collection.
It's also a strain the databases can't agree on. Canadian producers sell it as a sativa, SeedFinder calls it indica-leaning, and reviewers say it hits heavier than the sativa label suggests. Below: the real family tree, what the #88 on Canadian jars means, how the high unfolds, what the potency numbers actually say, how to use it, how to grow it and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Purple Churro's frosty buds.

- Type: Hybrid, with no agreement on the lean. Leafly lists a hybrid and calls the effects "mostly energizing"; AllBud lists 50/50; SeedFinder says "indica-leaning hybrid"; Redecan, Tilray, the Ontario Cannabis Store and BC Cannabis Stores all sell it as sativa or sativa-dominant.
- Ancestry: Cinnamon Horchata × Apples & Bananas. Every primary source we checked agrees on this cross; SeedFinder writes it as "'Cinnamon' Horchata," meaning a cinnamon-leaning phenotype of Horchata.
- Breeder: Compound Genetics, credited by Leafly, SeedFinder and GrowDiaries. SeedFinder lists the seeds as feminized only.
- THC: labels range from 27% to 35% (details below). CBD is negligible.
- Aliases: PCh (Leafly); Purple Churro #88 on Redecan and Tilray packaging in Canada.
- Offspring: Leafly lists Blacklight #1 as a child strain.
The family tree: Horchata meets Apples & Bananas
Both parents are Compound Genetics strains, which is why Purple Churro reads as a coherent dessert plant rather than a random cross.
- Horchata is Jet Fuel Gelato × Mochi Gelato (#47), per SeedFinder's genealogy — the same Gelato #47 cut covered on our Mochi page. Named after the cinnamon rice-milk drink, it brings the cream and spice. Compound also used Horchata in Purple Milk.
- Apples & Bananas is usually listed as ((Platinum Cookies × Granddaddy Purple) × Blue Power) × Gelatti. It brings the fruit, the purple, and — per SeedFinder's breeder note — the potency.
That stack is heavy on Gelato and GSC, which is what Leafly means when it calls Purple Churro "a dessert family strain with roots in GSC."
What is Purple Churro #88?
In June 2024, Tilray's Redecan brand launched Purple Churro in Canada as a top-shelf "sativa" with "sweet vanilla and cinnamon tasting notes." Canadian store listings and Tilray Medical sell it as Purple Churro #88. The #88 is a phenotype or cut number, the way breeders tag selections from a seed hunt; the lineage on those listings is the same Cinnamon Horchata × Apples & Bananas. Neither Redecan nor Compound has published how #88 differs from other cuts.
Is Purple Churro the same as Churro?
No. Leafly also lists a strain called just "Churro" with unknown parents and a blueberry, blue-cheese profile. The shared name is the only link. If a menu says "Churro" with no "Purple" and no breeder, it may be a different plant.
Purple Churro Terpene Profile
No breeder or database has published lab percentages for Purple Churro, so the best data comes from producer labels. Redecan, Tilray Medical and BC Cannabis Stores list limonene, nerolidol and caryophyllene as the dominant three; the Ontario Cannabis Store adds myrcene and linalool. Caryophyllene is the one that fits the churro name: Tilray describes it as cracked pepper, cinnamon and clove. A 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Limonene — sweet citrus-apple lift
Caryophyllene — cinnamon, clove, pepper
Myrcene — ripe fruit, heavy body
Linalool — floral, lilac, calm
Illustrative order only, from producer labels (Redecan, Tilray, OCS) — no lab percentages are published. Nerolidol, a woody, apple-and-rose terpene Redecan lists in the top three, isn't shown. Check the batch COA.
- Limonene: The bright, sweet top note — the apple and citrus over the cream — and part of the uplifted onset.
- Caryophyllene: The warm cinnamon-and-clove spice that sells the churro, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Nerolidol: A woody, fruity terpene Tilray describes as apple, citrus and rose. It's less common as a top-three terpene, and it's one reason Purple Churro smells different from most Gelato-family strains.
- Myrcene and linalool: Earthy fruit and floral lilac; consumers often link these two with the relaxed, heavier body that shows up later in the high.
The "churro" isn't a single terpene. It's the combination: Horchata's cream and spice, Apples & Bananas' fruit, and enough caryophyllene to read as cinnamon.
Appearance
Purple Churro is a looker. AllBud describes dense, heart-shaped buds with a green base, golden tones, orange hairs and a thick coat of white trichomes with a slight purple tint. In a review of FloraCal's Illinois batch, Illinois News Joint found bright green cores almost hidden under deep-purple sugar leaves, with amber-tinged frost packed into the creases. The Ontario Cannabis Store calls the buds dense and sticky. How purple you get depends on the cut and how cool the grow runs late in flower.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar and the dessert comes first: cinnamon sugar and creamy vanilla — AllBud likens it to "a vanilla churro" — then baked apple and a little banana. Break a bud and a spicier, earthier layer comes up. On the smoke, the inhale is sweet cream and fruit; the exhale turns spicier, with a faint gas or pine edge some reviewers pick up.
Not every cut smells like a bakery. FloraCal's Illinois batch skipped the cinnamon and went candied berry, cherry, lilac and dried fig, finishing on musk and "hot asphalt." Leafly's reviewers list apple, berry and diesel. That spread is typical for a young strain grown by many producers from seed: the cinnamon-vanilla version is the one Redecan built its launch around, and the berry-purple version is what you'll often find in U.S. jars.
Recreational Effects
Purple Churro opens bright and finishes heavy. Leafly's users report it mostly as uplifting, and the most-reported effects across the databases are:
- Uplifted and happy: Leafly's top two — a quick mood lift and an easy, giggly first half hour.
- Creative: Leafly's third most-reported effect; AllBud reviewers mention motivation and focus.
- Tingly body high: AllBud lists a tingly, physical onset that spreads out from the chest.
- Relaxed and hungry: the second act — a weighted body and a serious case of the munchies.
- Sleepy, later: several AllBud reviewers say it turns sedating with repeated hits.
That arc is why the sativa labels confuse people. FloraCal labels it sativa, but the Illinois News Joint reviewer found it "much more indica-leaning," with heavy eyelids, a weighted feeling in the chest and arms, playful focus and a long, calm window. A separate review of Cresco's Purple Churro live resin cart called it "more hybrid than sativa."
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a head lift and mood change, with a tingle in the body. Some reviewers describe a slower build — a "creeper."
- 20–60 minutes: the peak — happy, chatty and creative up top, heavier and calmer below.
- 1–3 hours: the body takes over. At higher doses it leans toward the couch and the snack drawer.
Because it can creep, wait between hits before you judge the dose.

How Strong Is Purple Churro?
Purple Churro is sold as a high-potency strain, but the numbers depend heavily on who's selling it:
- Tilray Medical (Purple Churro #88): 27–30% THC.
- BC Cannabis Stores (Redecan): 27–33%.
- Ontario Cannabis Store (Redecan #88): 28–35%, rated "very strong."
- AllBud and GrowDiaries: 30–32%.
- SeedFinder: a 30–40% potency category rather than a lab figure.
- One published batch: FloraCal's Illinois flower tested 28.77% THCA and 0.55% delta-9 THC. Run the standard conversion (THCA × 0.877 + delta-9) and that's about 26% total THC, which is still strong.
So is Purple Churro strong? Yes — it belongs in the high-potency bracket, and reviewers repeatedly warn beginners to go slow. But treat 35% as the top of a label range, not the norm. Batch, grower and phenotype matter more than the name, and the only public COA we found landed in the mid-20s for total THC.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Purple Churro against the 27–35% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Purple Churro vs Similar Strains
- vs Apples & Bananas: the fruit-forward parent. Purple Churro keeps the apple and the purple but adds Horchata's cinnamon cream and a heavier finish.
- vs Purple Milk: a Horchata sibling (Horchata × Grape Gas, in Compound's version). Purple Milk goes grape and gas; Purple Churro goes apple and spice.
- vs Vanilla Frosting and Cake Batter: other vanilla-dessert hybrids. Both lean buttercream over OG fuel; Purple Churro is spicier and fruitier.
- vs Jet Fuel Gelato: the grandparent with the gas. Purple Churro trades most of that fuel for sweetness.
- vs Blueberry Pancakes: our closest in-stock match. It's another breakfast-dessert strain — blueberry, grape jam, maple and vanilla batter — and indica-dominant, so it skips Purple Churro's bright opening and goes straight to the relaxed, happy finish. Cinnamon fans won't find an exact copy; dessert-strain fans will feel at home.
Who Purple Churro Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced consumers who want a potent, flavorful afternoon-to-evening strain; dessert-strain fans; anyone who likes a happy, social start and a calm landing.
Poor fit: beginners, anyone prone to THC anxiety, or someone who wants a clear-headed daytime sativa all the way through — the body side shows up. For a lighter, fruitier option on our shelf, Strawberry 2.1 starts from $22.
How to Use Purple Churro THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the cinnamon and cream. Around 350–375°F keeps the sweet top notes; 390–410°F brings out the spice and the heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — reviewers call this one potent and a bit of a creeper. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Pain: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 32% of reviewers), with arthritis at about 24%. AllBud reviewers also mention cramps and muscle spasms.
- Stress: about 24% of Leafly reviewers.
- Appetite and nausea: AllBud lists appetite loss and nausea, consistent with the "hungry" effect.
- Sleep: AllBud lists insomnia, and reviewers say higher doses turn sedating.

Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.
Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — Leafly's two most-reported negatives.
- Dizziness — listed by GrowDiaries, usually from too much too fast.
- Over-sedation — AllBud reviewers say repeated hits can flatten you.
- Headache — one AllBud reviewer reported it, alongside inconsistent flavor they blamed on a bad batch.
Is Purple Churro good for sleep? At higher doses, often yes; at one or two hits it's more mellow and happy than sleepy. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Purple Churro Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask who grew it and which cut. Compound Genetics genetics, a named grower and a cut number like #88 are good signs. A bare "Churro" with no breeder may be a different strain.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 35% claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- The nose should be dessert. Cinnamon, vanilla cream, apple or candied berry. Flat, grassy or hay-like means a weak cut or a rushed cure.
- Purple and frost, with trichomes packed into the creases, not just dusted on top.
- A proper cure — sticky but not wet, with a springy snap when you break it.
Growing Purple Churro
Purple Churro is a newer release, and Compound Genetics hasn't published grow specs for it; SeedFinder and GrowDiaries list no flowering time, yield or height data. Here's what's known:
- Seeds: feminized only, per SeedFinder; suitable for indoor and outdoor grows.
- Flowering: no breeder figure. One online guide estimates 8–9 weeks indoors, which lines up with its parents — our Apples & Bananas page lists 7–8 weeks per SeedFinder.
- Color: cooler night temperatures late in flower can help bring out the purple.
- Resin: frosty enough that U.S. producers also sell it as live resin carts and cold-cure rosin badder, not just flower.
- Commercial runs: Redecan grows the #88 in a Niagara hybrid greenhouse, hang-dried and hand-trimmed.
Is Purple Churro THCA Flower Legal?
