Purple Kush Strain

Purple Kush Strain: Oakland's Pure Indica Classic

The Purple Kush strain is a pure indica that came out of the Oakland, California area as a cross of Hindu Kush and Purple Afghani. It's one of the strains that made "purple" a category: compact, deep-violet buds, an earthy, sweet grape nose, and an effect that starts as calm euphoria and ends with your body sinking into the couch. Consumers reach for it in the evening, and for good reason — "sleepy" is Leafly's top-reported effect. It sits in the heavy, wind-down corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also a name with more than one plant behind it. The classic Northern California cut is Hindu Kush × Purple Afghani, but at least two seed companies sell a "Purple Kush" with different parents, and nobody has a confirmed name for the original breeder. Below: what the sources actually say about the lineage, why it turns purple (and why that doesn't make it stronger), the real potency numbers, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it and how to judge a bag.

A 360° look at Purple Kush's compact, deep-violet buds.

Purple Kush Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Pure indica. Leafly, AllBud and Cannigma all list it as 100% indica.
  • Ancestry: Hindu Kush × Purple Afghani — the cross named by Leafly, Cannigma, AllBud and Weedmaps. Hindu Kush is the mountain landrace behind Afghan Kush and much of the Kush family; Purple Afghani is the color donor.
  • Origin: Oakland, California. Weedmaps ties it to Oakland's Oaksterdam scene and says the cut was circulated by Dark Heart Nursery, but notes the original breeder is uncertain.
  • THC: Leafly lists 19%, Cannigma 20.8%, AllBud an average of 22%, and Weedmaps a range of 18–26%.
  • CBD and minor cannabinoids: Negligible CBD (0–0.1%); Cannigma lists about 0.3% CBG.
  • Known offspring: Cannigma names Purple Aurora and Purple Killer as descendants.

Which Purple Kush are you getting? The seed-bank versions

Because the original breeder was never documented, "Purple Kush" on a seed pack doesn't always mean the Oakland cut:

  • Classic Northern California cut: Hindu Kush × Purple Afghani, pure indica. This is the strain the databases describe.
  • Tastebudz Genetics: per Weedmaps, a Purple Kush built from Blackberry Kush × Granddaddy Purple, advertised up to 25% THC.
  • Crop King Seeds: per SeedFinder, Cali Purple Kush (itself Hindu Kush × Purple Afghani) crossed with OG Kush — listed at 75% indica, 18–21% THC.

All three land in the same place — grape, earth, Kush hash and a heavy indica body — but they're different genetics. If lineage matters to you, ask the seller which one it is.

Why Purple Kush turns purple — and why that doesn't mean stronger

The color comes from anthocyanins, the same pigments that color blueberries and red cabbage. Genetics come first: Purple Afghani gives Purple Kush the ability to produce them, and cooler temperatures late in flower bring the color out. A study in PMC found that anthocyanin accumulation, flower dry weight and cannabinoid content have different temperature optima — color and potency are driven by different processes. As Weedmaps' purple-strain explainer puts it, purple cannabis "isn't inherently stronger than green cannabis." A deep-violet bag tells you about genetics and growing conditions, not THC.

Purple Kush Terpene Profile

Leafly lists myrcene as Purple Kush's dominant terpene, followed by pinene and caryophyllene. Cannigma's lab-style breakdown puts humulene (0.49%) and pinene (0.47%) slightly ahead of caryophyllene (0.32%) and myrcene (0.31%). The disagreement is normal — terpene ratios shift by cut, grow and cure — but every source agrees on the same four: an earthy, herbal, woody, peppery profile with the grape riding on top.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Myrcene — earthy, herbal, the heavy body

Pinene — pine and wood

Caryophyllene — pepper and spice

Humulene — earthy, hoppy, woody

Typical relative profile for Purple Kush — myrcene-led per Leafly. Cannigma's test data runs humulene- and pinene-forward, so individual batches vary.

  • Myrcene: Earthy, musky and herbal — the terpene most associated with heavy-bodied, sleepy indicas, and Leafly's top terpene for Purple Kush.
  • Pinene: Fresh pine and wood. It's part of why the first stage of Purple Kush can feel clear and euphoric before the body takes over.
  • Caryophyllene: The peppery, spicy finish on the exhale, and the only common terpene known to bind CB2 receptors directly.
  • Humulene: Earthy and hoppy — it also shows up in hops — and it reinforces the woody Kush base.

The grape isn't a single terpene. It's the overall chemistry of the purple side of the family, and it's louder in a fresh, well-cured jar than in old flower.

Appearance

Purple Kush is one of the best-looking indicas in a jar. Leafly describes buds that bloom "in shades of deep lavender" under a frosty coat of trichomes; Cannigma notes average-sized, tightly packed buds with sticky resin. Expect compact, dense nugs in deep purple to dark violet, sometimes mixed with forest or neon green depending on the grow, threaded with amber-orange pistils and dusted white with trichomes. How purple it gets depends on the cut and on how cool the grow room ran late in flower — some batches are almost black-violet, others mostly green with purple flashes.

Aroma and Flavor

Leafly calls the aroma "subtle and earthy with sweet overtones typical of Kush varieties," and lists grape, violet and earthy as its flavors. On Weedmaps, grape is the most-reported flavor (46% of reports), followed by earthy (32%) and berry (23%). AllBud's description is the most evocative: "earthy sweet grapes" on the nose and "a taste of earthy red wine."

In practice: crack the jar and you get sweet grape over damp earth. Break a bud and the Kush hash and spice come forward. The inhale is smooth and sweet; the exhale is earthy, woody and peppery. It's sweet, but not candy — the earth keeps it grounded. One Oklahoma Gazette reviewer noted the taste was "much sweeter than the scent."

Recreational Effects

Leafly sums it up: "Blissful, long-lasting euphoria blankets the mind while physical relaxation rids the body of pain, sleeplessness, and stress." Its most-reported effects, from more than 2,300 Leafly reviews:

  • Sleepy: the headline effect. This is a nighttime strain.
  • Hungry: a strong appetite kick — plan for the munchies.
  • Relaxed: a full-body, muscle-loosening calm.
  • Happy and euphoric: the mood lift that opens the session, per Cannigma and AllBud.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: what AllBud calls "an immediately uplifting euphoric head high" — a calm, happy mood change.
  • 15–60 minutes: the body takes over — a "warming numbing body high," heavy limbs, a quiet mind.
  • 1–3 hours: a long, sedated tail that often ends in sleep. Weedmaps describes it as "settling into the session until getting up starts to feel negotiable."

The early plateau is short. If you want the euphoric part without the sleep, keep the dose small.

How Strong Is Purple Kush?

Purple Kush is a mid-to-high potency indica — strong, but not a record-chaser. The numbers by source:

  • Leafly: 19% THC, 0% CBD.
  • Cannigma: 20.8% THC, 0.1% CBD, 0.3% CBG.
  • AllBud: about 22% on average. AllBud also says it was named to a High Times Top 10 Most Powerful Strains list — we couldn't locate that list to confirm it.
  • Weedmaps: 18–26%, with the Tastebudz seed version advertised up to 25%.

What makes Purple Kush feel strong isn't a giant THC number — it's the myrcene-heavy, sedating profile. Twenty percent in a sleepy indica can feel heavier than 28% in a bright sativa. Plenty of modern strains test higher, but few hit the body as squarely.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Purple Kush batch against the 18–26% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Purple Kush vs Similar Strains

  • vs Granddaddy Purple: the other California purple benchmark. GDP is sweeter and more candy-grape; Purple Kush is earthier and more hashy. Both are serious sleep strains.
  • vs Purple Urkle: an Emerald Triangle purple indica with a similar grape-and-berry nose and the same couch-lock.
  • vs Purple Punch: Larry OG × Granddaddy Purple — the dessert version, more grape candy and blueberry, with a quicker euphoric lift.
  • vs Afghan Kush, Master Kush and Bubba Kush: the Kush family. Purple Kush shares their hashy, earthy weight, adding grape and color.
  • vs Purple Haze: same color, opposite effect — Purple Haze is an energetic sativa-leaning hybrid. Don't mix them up at bedtime.
  • vs Permanent Marker: a modern indica-leaning hybrid with purple-flashed buds and a heavy body finish, but a sharper chemical-gas nose. It's the closest match on our shelf.

Who Purple Kush Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: evening and nighttime users; anyone winding down after work or physical activity; people who want appetite; fans of earthy grape and classic Kush flavor.

Poor fit: daytime use, anything that requires focus or driving, and anyone who wants energy — this strain is built to slow you down. Beginners can enjoy it at a low dose, but should plan on staying in.

How to Use Purple Kush THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the grape before the earth. Around 350–375°F keeps it sweeter and lighter; 390–410°F brings out the full sedating body.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — the body effect builds after the first lift. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full evening arc. Take it about an hour before bed if sleep is the goal. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and in strain databases, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 42% of reviewers).
  • Anxiety: about 36% report help — mostly at moderate doses in calm settings.
  • Pain: about 36% of Leafly reviewers cite it; AllBud users describe strong body relief.
  • Sleeplessness: Cannigma calls insomnia the use it's most often cited for, consistent with "sleepy" as its top effect.
  • Appetite: "hungry" is one of its top three effects on Leafly.

Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — Leafly's most common complaints.
  • Dizziness — Leafly's third most-reported negative, usually from standing up fast after a heavy dose.
  • Lethargy and next-morning grogginess — Cannigma lists lethargy; it's the flip side of a strong sleep strain.
  • Paranoia — less common than with sativas, but possible at high doses or low tolerance.

Don't drive or operate anything after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication — especially sedatives or sleep aids — are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Purple Kush Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Purple is not proof of quality. Color comes from anthocyanins and cool nights, not potency. Judge frost, smell and paperwork, not hue.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Grape and earth. A real Purple Kush has both. Purple flower that smells like nothing, or like hay, was cured badly or is something else.
  • Ask which version. Hindu Kush × Purple Afghani is the classic; seed-bank versions with GDP or OG Kush parents exist.
  • Dense, resinous buds with trichomes inside the bud, not just on the surface.

Growing Purple Kush

Purple Kush is a short, bushy indica. Leafly rates it moderate difficulty and notes it grows "wide rather than tall" and does best outdoors in dry climates; Crop King Seeds rates its version easy to moderate.

  • Flowering: about 7–9 weeks per Leafly; 8–9 weeks per Cannigma and Weedmaps.
  • Height: compact — Cannigma lists 50–75 cm (20–30 inches). Good for small indoor spaces.
  • Yield: Cannigma reports about 1.4 oz per square foot indoors and around 9 oz per plant outdoors.
  • Outdoors: harvest around late September in the Northern Hemisphere. It prefers dry climates.
  • Airflow: Weedmaps notes the dense, bushy frame needs good airflow to avoid mold — thin the interior and keep humidity down late in flower.
  • Color: cooler night temperatures late in flower deepen the purple. It won't change potency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Purple Kush indica or sativa?

Purple Kush is a pure indica. Leafly, AllBud and Cannigma all list it as 100% indica, and its top-reported effects — sleepy, hungry, relaxed — fit that.

What is Purple Kush a cross of?

The classic Oakland cut is Hindu Kush × Purple Afghani. Some seed-bank versions differ: Weedmaps lists a Tastebudz Genetics Purple Kush from Blackberry Kush × Granddaddy Purple, and SeedFinder lists a Crop King Seeds version from Cali Purple Kush × OG Kush.

How strong is Purple Kush?

Leafly lists 19% THC, Cannigma 20.8%, AllBud about 22% and Weedmaps 18–26%. It's mid-to-high potency, but its sedating, myrcene-heavy profile makes it feel heavier than the number suggests.

Is Purple Kush good for sleep?

It's one of the classic nighttime strains — 'sleepy' is its top-reported effect on Leafly, and Cannigma says it's most often cited for insomnia. Most people take it about an hour before bed.

What does Purple Kush taste like?

Earthy, sweet grape on the inhale, with berry and a hashy, peppery Kush finish. AllBud describes it as 'a taste of earthy red wine.'

What does Purple Kush feel like?

A calm, happy head lift in the first few minutes, then a warm, heavy body relaxation that builds over the next hour and often ends in sleep. Expect the munchies.

Why is Purple Kush purple?

Anthocyanins — the pigments that color blueberries. Its Purple Afghani genetics make them possible, and cooler temperatures late in flower bring the color out.

Is purple weed stronger?

No. Color and potency are driven by different processes; purple flower isn't inherently stronger than green. Check the COA, not the color.

Is Purple Kush good for anxiety?

About 36% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, and about 42% cite stress. It's calmer than most sativas, but high doses can still cause paranoia in some people.

What's the difference between Purple Kush and Granddaddy Purple?

Both are California purple indicas built for nighttime. Granddaddy Purple is sweeter and more candy-grape; Purple Kush is earthier and more hashy, from Hindu Kush × Purple Afghani.

Is Purple Kush good for beginners?

At a low dose, yes — it's mellow rather than racy. Start with one small puff, wait 15–30 minutes, and plan to stay in.

How long does Purple Kush take to flower?

About 7–9 weeks indoors, with outdoor harvests around late September. It stays short and bushy, around 50–75 cm.
