Scented Marker Strain: The Fruit-Forward Child of Permanent Marker
The Scented Marker strain is Seed Junky Genetics' cross of Pineapple Fruz and Permanent Marker — the gassy, candy-floral strain Leafly named its 2023 Strain of the Year. Think of it as Permanent Marker with the windows rolled down: the same diesel-and-marker-fume backbone, now wrapped in syrupy pineapple, tropical citrus and, oddly, a blueberry exhale that several sources mention. The high is euphoric, happy and creative first, then warm and calm in the body. Leafly made it its September 2026 top strain pick. If that candy-gas lane is your thing, start with our THCA flower collection.
It's also a strain with a lot of noise around it. THC numbers run from 19% to 34% depending on who's selling it, sources disagree on whether it's calming or energizing, and the flavor descriptions split between "diesel and chemical" and "blueberry and tropical." Below: what the breeder-linked listings actually say, how the high unfolds, what the potency numbers mean, how it compares with its famous parent, how to grow it and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Scented Marker's frosty buds.

- Type: Hybrid. Leafly lists it as a hybrid with "mostly calming" effects; AllBud calls it an even 50/50; a Weedmaps listing from Vivid describes it as "evenly balanced"; Canadian producer EastCann labels its batch indica-dominant.
- Breeder: Seed Junky Genetics, credited by Leafly and on brand listings from Vivid and Seed Junky itself. Seed Junky also bred Permanent Marker and Pineapple Fruz, so this is an in-house cross of two of its own hits.
- Parents: Pineapple Fruz × Permanent Marker. Every source we checked — Leafly, AllBud, Weedmaps brand pages, Ontario's OCS and a clone nursery — agrees on the cross. That's rarer than you'd think for a newer strain.
- THC: AllBud lists 19–23%, Leafly 25%; individual batches run higher — Grown Rogue's listing shows 30.29% THC and EastCann's pre-roll 28–34%.
- CBD: negligible — Grown Rogue's batch shows 0.08%.
- Released: a clone nursery, Mass Hydro, says Seed Junky released it in 2025, and Leafly's earliest reviews date to September 2025. We couldn't find the breeder confirming the date.
Parent one: Permanent Marker
Permanent Marker is the famous side. Leafly lists it as (Biscotti × Sherb BX) × Jealousy — a "Gelato times 1,000" cross, in Leafly's words — and named it 2023 Strain of the Year. Its nose is the reason for the name: Leafly's write-up describes marker fumes, ammonia, tobacco and chemical notes over sherbet. Lab tests Leafly cites averaged high in myrcene, limonene and beta-caryophyllene. That backbone of gas, floral candy and a euphoric, tingly, chatty high is what Scented Marker inherits.
Parent two: Pineapple Fruz
Leafly's Pineapple Fruz page credits Seed Junky with Pineapple Fruz, an Animal Mints Bx1 × Z Bx1 cross (the "Z" being Zkittlez, and "Bx" meaning backcross). SeedFinder lists the same pedigree. Leafly says it has won "multiple awards" — it doesn't name them — for its looks and its "strong, syrupy pineapple flavor," with an energetic, creative, focused effect and pineapple, citrus and apple flavors. It's been on California shelves since 2022. Through Animal Mints it also carries Wedding Cake and GSC ancestry.
Why it's called Scented Marker
The name riffs on the parent. Permanent Marker smells like a Sharpie; Scented Marker is the fruit-scented marker from grade school. Leafly says it directly: Permanent Marker's floral, fruity and diesel notes are "like the markers we used to sniff as kids," and Pineapple Fruz adds the fruit. It's a joke, but an accurate one — the gas is still there, just sweetened.
Scented Marker's siblings
SeedFinder doesn't list Scented Marker yet, but its Pineapple Fruz page shows close relatives. Pink Pina, from Grounded Genetics, is the same two parents — Permanent Marker × Pineapple Fruz — from a different breeder. Seed Junky's own Caribbean Breeze crosses Pineapple Fruz with Biscotti × Sherb BX, two of Permanent Marker's own building blocks, and Pineapple Burst crosses it with Kush Mints. If you can't find Scented Marker, those are the nearest genetic cousins.
Scented Marker Terpene Profile
Leafly doesn't list a dominant terpene for Scented Marker. Producer listings fill the gap: EastCann's Canadian pre-roll and the Mass Hydro clone listing both name myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene — the same three Leafly reports as Permanent Marker's lab averages. A New York grower, Rolling Green Cannabis, lists caryophyllene, linalool and myrcene for its batch. None of them publishes percentages. Caryophyllene is the one with real research interest: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy, ripe fruit, body calm
Limonene — citrus, tropical lift
Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, the gas edge
Linalool — floral, soft calm
Estimated relative profile for Scented Marker — myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene named by two producer listings, linalool by one grower. No published percentages; bar lengths are estimates.
- Myrcene: Earthy, musky ripe fruit — likely a big part of the warm, calm body that follows the head high, and of the "strong stone" some reviewers report.
- Limonene: The tropical-citrus brightness that Pineapple Fruz is known for, and part of why the onset feels happy and euphoric.
- Caryophyllene: Pepper and spice — the "spicy diesel" AllBud and Vivid describe under the fruit.
- Linalool: Floral and soft; listed by one grower. It fits the floral notes Leafly credits to the Permanent Marker side.
The blueberry note is the puzzle. AllBud, Vivid and the clone nursery all describe blueberry on the exhale, yet neither parent is a blueberry strain. No terpene list explains it — it's most likely the blend of fruity esters and terpenes reading as berry, the same way no single compound makes a "peach" strain taste like peach.
Appearance
Leafly describes clustered green buds with deep purple accents and a heavy coat of pale yellow trichomes. AllBud goes further: oversized, fluffy, heart-shaped minty-green nugs with purple undertones, thin orange hairs and frosty, almost blue-tinted trichomes. EastCann calls its buds dense and frosty, and a Leafly reviewer of Pineapple Fruz mentions crystal-coated purple and white nugs, so the purple likely comes from that side. Expect a jar that looks loud before you even open it.
Aroma and Flavor
Open the jar and you get sweet tropical fruit and pineapple first, then a spicy diesel and gas edge that tells you Permanent Marker is in the family. AllBud's aroma tags read blueberry, diesel, earthy, flowery, gas, spicy and tropical; its flavor tags read blueberry, citrus, fruity, sweet and tropical. Vivid's listing describes sweet tropical citrus with "fresh blueberry on the exhale." Seed Junky's own copy calls it "loud, funky" with fruity candy and gas.
Leafly leans the other way: its flavor tags are diesel, chemical and pineapple, and one reviewer said it tastes much like Permanent Marker's diesel with "smooth, sweet berry or floral hints." EastCann's summary is probably the fairest — "sweet, fruity, and just the right amount of gas." Phenotype and grower clearly matter here. If you want the fruit, lower-temperature vaping keeps it front and center.
Recreational Effects
Scented Marker is a mood strain. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.8 rating from 13 reviews, the top-reported effects are euphoric, happy and creative. Across sources, the pattern looks like this:
- Euphoric and happy: the headline. One Leafly reviewer calls it "a MASSIVE mood booster"; Leafly says it keeps Permanent Marker's "intensely euphoric effects."
- Creative: credited to the Pineapple Fruz side, with "a bit more creativity thrown in," per Leafly.
- Energetic up front: Weedmaps brand listings tag creative, energetic, euphoric, relaxed and uplifted; Vivid describes an energetic start that turns heady and stoney.
- Warm, calm body: one reviewer found it more "mentally sativa-like" than Permanent Marker but with a chill, warm body high; another called it a "strong stone."
- Hungry: AllBud lists it, and a Leafly reviewer said it made them binge for the first time in a long while.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First few minutes: a fast, lifted, euphoric onset — AllBud and Vivid both describe it coming on quickly.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — happy, talkative and creative, with a heady edge.
- 1–3 hours: it gets heavier. Several sources describe a turn from energetic to heady and stony, and reviewers report relaxation, appetite and, at higher doses, sleepiness.
That arc is why the "calming vs energizing" labels conflict — it's both, in that order. Late afternoon and evening suit it best; one reviewer calls it "great for nighttime and sleep."

How Strong Is Scented Marker?
Strong, and the published numbers drift upward the closer you get to an actual batch:
- AllBud: 19–23% THC.
- Leafly: 25% THC, "higher THC than average."
- Grown Rogue (one batch, Weedmaps): 30.29% THC, 0.08% CBD.
- EastCann (Ontario pre-roll): 28–34% THC, labeled "Very Strong."
- Rolling Green Cannabis (NY grower): claims about 30%.
Dispensary-reported numbers in the 30s are common for modern Seed Junky crosses, but treat any single number as a batch, not a strain property. Realistically, expect mid-20s or higher from a good cut — and because the high builds from euphoric to stony, it can feel stronger an hour in than it did on the first hit.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Scented Marker against the 19–34% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Scented Marker vs Permanent Marker: Same Strain?
No — and it's a fair question, since the names and the gas overlap. Scented Marker is a child of Permanent Marker, not another name for it. Here's what changes:
- Flavor: Permanent Marker is the sherbet-and-marker-fume original — chemical, floral, gassy. Scented Marker keeps the gas but adds pineapple, tropical citrus and that blueberry exhale.
- Effect: both are euphoric. A Leafly reviewer who knew both found Scented Marker more "mentally sativa-like," with Pineapple Fruz adding creativity, while keeping a warm body.
- Availability: Permanent Marker is everywhere, including our shelf. Scented Marker is newer and mostly sold as dispensary flower and clones.
If you love Permanent Marker's gas but want more fruit, Scented Marker is the upgrade. If you want the original, our Permanent Marker THCA flower is in stock.
Who Grows Scented Marker
Because Seed Junky has spread the clone, you'll see Scented Marker from a range of growers: Seed Junky's own pre-rolls, Grown Rogue, Vivid, Leafology, Freddy's Fuego, Robust in Missouri, Rolling Green Cannabis in New York and EastCann in Canada. Some menus list a numbered cut — "Scented Marker #1," for instance — which usually means a selected phenotype, though we couldn't confirm what distinguishes it. That spread is why flavor descriptions vary so much: the same cross, many growers, different phenos.
Scented Marker vs Similar Strains
- vs Permanent Marker: the parent, covered above — more chemical gas, less fruit.
- vs Zkittlez: the grandparent through Pineapple Fruz. Zkittlez is pure candy-fruit and mellow; Scented Marker adds gas and a stronger head.
- vs Jealousy: one of Permanent Marker's parents — creamy, gassy and balanced, with less tropical fruit.
- vs Pineapple Express: the classic pineapple strain. Pineapple Express is a breezier, more daytime sativa-leaning high; Scented Marker is sweeter, gassier and ends heavier.
- vs Runtz: both candy-sweet, euphoric modern hybrids. Runtz runs smoother and fruitier; Scented Marker has more diesel bite.
- vs Super Boof: another sweet-fruit gas strain on our shelf. If you want fruit and fuel with serious potency, Super Boof THCA flower is a close lane match.
Who Scented Marker Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: Permanent Marker fans who want more fruit, people chasing a big mood lift, creative or social evenings, and anyone who likes candy-and-gas flavor.
Poor fit: brand-new users (batches often test near or above 30%), anyone needing to stay sharp all day — it gets heavier as it goes — and people who dislike gassy, chemical notes. For the closest thing on our shelf, Permanent Marker is the pick, from $65 for a half ounce.
How to Use Scented Marker THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the pineapple and blueberry. Around 350–380°F keeps the fruit up front; 390–410°F brings out the diesel and spice.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — this one builds. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full euphoric-to-calm arc. With rosin, start with a rice-grain-sized dab. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Low mood: about 33% of Leafly reviewers cite depression, consistent with the "mood booster" reviews.
- Pain: another 33% on Leafly; reviewers mention back, neck and hip pain, and AllBud lists chronic pain, headaches and migraines.
- Stress: about 25% of Leafly reviewers. One said it "chills out my anxiety" in social settings.
- Appetite and nausea: AllBud lists appetite loss and nausea, and the "hungry" reports back that up.
- Sleep: some reviewers use it at night for the heavier back half.
For a plain-language primer on how terpenes are thought to shape these effects, see Project CBD on terpenes. Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.
Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the usual for high-THC flower. Leafly lists dry mouth, dry eyes and paranoia as negatives for the Pineapple Fruz parent.
- Overstimulation or racing thoughts — one reviewer felt more "critical and questioning" after a few puffs.
- Munchies and couch-lock — the heavier back half can derail plans.
Is Scented Marker good for sleep? It can be later in the arc, but the onset is lively, so give it time. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Scented Marker Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask for the source. A Seed Junky cut, or a grower who names it, is the documented version. With "Marker" crosses multiplying, provenance matters.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 35%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Fruit and gas. Real Scented Marker has tropical fruit or berry over diesel. All-gas with no fruit might just be Permanent Marker; flat and earthy means old or mislabeled.
- Purple accents and heavy frost — green buds with purple, coated in pale trichomes.
- A proper cure — hay or grass smell means it was rushed.
Growing Scented Marker
Scented Marker is sold mainly as clones; we found no seed release from Seed Junky. Mass Hydro's clone listing calls it easy to grow, high-yielding and adaptable.
- Flowering: about 8–9 weeks, per Mass Hydro.
- Yield: up to about 500 g/m² in ideal conditions, per the same listing.
- Height: tall. Top it early and use low-stress training to keep the canopy even.
- Color: the purple accents Leafly describes vary by grower and phenotype; we found no grower data on what brings them out.
- Clones: buy from a nursery that tests for pests and hop latent viroid (HLVd); Mass Hydro says its cuts are tested.
