Magic Marker Strain

Magic Marker Strain: Permanent Marker With a Fruit Sherbet Twist

The Magic Marker strain is a Seed Junky Genetics hybrid that crosses Permanent Marker — Leafly's 2023 Strain of the Year — with RS11, the peachy, citrusy Rainbow Sherbet #11 cut. You get the inky, chemical, "just uncapped a Sharpie" nose that made its parent famous, softened with candy, citrus and tropical fruit. The high is mostly calming: relaxed, happy and talkative, and heavy enough at a bigger dose that some reviewers say it put them to sleep. For flower in this lane, start with our THCA flower collection.

It's also one of the most crowded names in the "marker" family. Seed Junky alone has Permanent Marker, Scented Marker and Magic Marker, and other breeders sell Magnetic Marker and Rainbow Marker. Below: what the breeder-linked sources actually say about Magic Marker, how it differs from its relatives, how the high unfolds, what the potency numbers mean, how to grow it and how to judge a bag.

A 360° look at Magic Marker's frosty buds.

Magic Marker Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Hybrid. Leafly lists it as a hybrid whose effects are "mostly calming." A New Jersey dispensary menu on Weedmaps calls its batch a "perfectly balanced" 50/50, while Seed Junky's own infused-joint listing describes it as "a strong Indica."
  • Breeder: Seed Junky Genetics, distributed by Doja Pak, per Leafly. Weedmaps credits the breeder JBeezy — the same Seed Junky breeder behind Permanent Marker.
  • Parents: Permanent Marker × RS11, per Leafly, Weedmaps and Nasha, the Canadian hash brand that pressed an outdoor Magic Marker grown by Pacific Roots Farm in Humboldt.
  • THC: Leafly doesn't publish a number. The one flower batch we found with a figure — a Weedmaps dispensary menu in Princeton, New Jersey — listed 25.41%.
  • Aliases: MGM, per Leafly.
  • Offspring: Leafly lists Pop Rocks and Magic Gum Drops as children.

The Permanent Marker side

Leafly lists Permanent Marker as (Biscotti × Sherb BX) × Jealousy, bred by Seed Junky's JBeezy, selected by Doja Pak and released in 2022. It's the source of the strain's signature: ammonia, chemical and tobacco flavors, a soapy-candy-floral nose, and a tingly, relaxed, euphoric high. Leafly names myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene as its top terpenes and lists it at 25% THC.

The RS11 side

Leafly's RS11 page lists RS11 — Rainbow Sherbert #11 — as Pink Guava × Sunset Sherbert, bred by Deo Farms in Oakland and selected by Wizard Trees in Los Angeles. It brings apricot, peach and citrus, a 24% THC listing and a focused, giggly, relaxed high, with caryophyllene, limonene and humulene on top. That's where Magic Marker's fruit — and its chattier edge — most plausibly comes from.

Magic Marker vs Rainbow Marker: same parents, different breeder

Magic Marker isn't the only Permanent Marker × RS-11 cross. SeedFinder lists Rainbow Marker from Lit Farms (sold in Canada by Victoria Cannabis Company with a 28–34% THC label) with the same two parents and about a 60-day flower. Same recipe, different breeder and different selection — so don't assume a Rainbow Marker jar is Seed Junky's Magic Marker, or vice versa.

Magic Marker's offspring

Seed Junky has already bred from it. Leafly lists Magic Pop Rocks — Magic Marker × LA Pop Rocks, released by JBeezy on March 27, 2024 — which tells you Magic Marker was in Seed Junky's hands by early 2024 (our Pop Rocks guide covers that family). Magic Gum Drops crosses Bubblegum Sherb with Magic Marker, and JointCommerce also mentions a Magic Shotz. We couldn't find an official release date for Magic Marker itself.

Magic Marker Terpene Profile

Leafly doesn't list terpenes for Magic Marker, and we found no full lab breakdown for flower. The one published data point comes from Nasha's hash made from Pacific Roots Farm's outdoor crop: about 2% total terpenes, led by limonene, pinene and myrcene. Both parents add caryophyllene — Permanent Marker leads with myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene on Leafly; RS11 with caryophyllene, limonene and humulene. JointCommerce's guide adds linalool with percentage ranges, but no source. Caryophyllene is the one with real research interest: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Limonene — citrus, candy brightness, mood lift

Myrcene — earthy, musky, the heavy body

Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, gassy depth

Pinene — pine, woody, clear head

Estimated relative profile for Magic Marker — limonene, myrcene and pinene from one hash-maker listing (no percentages); caryophyllene inferred from both parents' Leafly profiles. Not lab-measured flower data.

  • Limonene: The citrus and candy brightness — present in both parents and likely the reason the first few minutes feel happy and chatty.
  • Myrcene: Permanent Marker's lead terpene, often linked to the heavier body feel that shows up at bigger doses.
  • Caryophyllene: RS11's top terpene and a Permanent Marker staple — the pepper and spice behind the gas.
  • Pinene: The piney, woody note that both the Nasha listing and a New Jersey menu ("a gassy, slightly piney aftertone") pick up on.

The marker smell itself isn't one terpene. Nobody has published what exactly produces Magic Marker's ink-and-ammonia note, and terpene charts alone don't explain it — which is why two jars with similar terpene numbers can smell completely different.

Appearance

Expect dense, medium-sized buds in lime-to-olive green with violet and plum streaks, thin orange pistils and a heavy white frost. One Leafly reviewer describes "purple, green and orange buds"; another says "excellent bag appeal dripping in trichomes." JointCommerce describes the pistils as apricot-to-tangerine over a "diamond dust" resin coat. Nasha's outdoor Magic Marker was resinous enough to press into hash, listed at a 55% melt.

Aroma and Flavor

Open the jar and the marker hits first — sharp, inky, chemical. Leafly calls it a "stinker" with "astringent, minty chemical notes," sherbet sweetness and a tropical, fruity twist, and lists the top flavors as ammonia, chemical and diesel. Reviewers add gassy, fruity, candy, berry and papaya.

Other listings lean sweeter. Seed Junky's own joint listing on Weedmaps describes a sweet, gassy aroma with a subtle hint of lime and creaminess. A New Jersey dispensary describes sweet candy, zesty citrus and bright tropical fruit over "chemical funk and creamy gas," with an "inky" artificial sweetness and a piney exhale. Nasha's outdoor hash ran sweet, pine and earth with citrus and fruit. One Leafly reviewer says it tastes "very similar" to Permanent Marker; another says the fruity aftertaste reminds them of Zoap. Translation: more fruit than its parent, but the marker is still the headline.

Quality varies, and reviewers notice. One Leafly reviewer says a well-grown batch is far better than a "very muted" one — if the jar smells flat, the cure or the cut is off.

Recreational Effects

Magic Marker is a calming strain with a social front end. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.6 rating from 36 reviews, the most-reported effects are:

  • Relaxed: the headline effect. Reviewers describe a "nice hybrid buzz with relaxing head high."
  • Talkative: unusual for a calming strain, and likely the RS11 side showing up.
  • Happy: a warm mood lift. Weedmaps listings add euphoric, creative and uplifted.
  • Focused: one reviewer calls it "calming, relaxed, focused," and a New Jersey menu says it clears "mental static."
  • Heavy at higher doses: one reviewer slept nine and a half hours; another says it was "3 hrs before i could move again." It's strong — one calls it "not recommended for beginners."

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a quick lift behind the eyes — happy, chatty and a little buzzy.
  • 15–60 minutes: the peak — relaxed, euphoric and social, with the body settling.
  • 1–3 hours: a long, calm taper. At bigger doses, that taper can become couch-lock or sleep.

Those timings follow JointCommerce's estimates and reviewer reports, not a clinical study. A small dose can work in the afternoon — one reviewer calls it a "good anytime strain without sedation" — but most people will find it best in the evening.

How Strong Is Magic Marker?

Strong — but the published numbers are thin. Here's what we found:

  • Leafly: no THC figure listed for Magic Marker.
  • Weedmaps dispensary menu (Princeton, NJ): 25.41% THC on one batch.
  • The parents on Leafly: Permanent Marker 25% THC, RS11 24% THC with 1% CBG.
  • Rainbow Marker (same parents, Lit Farms): labeled 28–34% THC by its Canadian producer.

JointCommerce's mid-20s estimate is based on comparable Seed Junky hybrids, not Magic Marker test results. Realistically, a well-grown Magic Marker sits in the mid-20s — and reviewers ("knocked my socks off," "strong stuff") back up the reputation. Treat 30%+ claims without a COA as marketing.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Magic Marker against the 24–28% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Why It's Called Magic Marker

Seed Junky's marker names point to Permanent Marker, the parent whose nose smells like an uncapped Sharpie — Leafly's Permanent Marker coverage describes marker fumes, ammonia and tobacco. "Magic Marker" swaps in a nostalgic brand-name marker, which fits a cross that keeps the ink and adds sweeter, more colorful fruit from RS11. We couldn't find Seed Junky or JBeezy explaining the name directly, so take that as the most plausible reading, not the official story.

Magic Marker vs Permanent Marker vs Scented Marker

  • vs Permanent Marker: the parent. Permanent Marker is the purer ink-and-ammonia nose, with tobacco and a tingly, calming high. Magic Marker keeps that funk but adds candy, citrus and tropical fruit, and reviewers find it more talkative.
  • vs Scented Marker: a half-sibling — Seed Junky's Pineapple Fruz × Permanent Marker. Scented Marker leans pineapple, blueberry and diesel; Magic Marker leans sherbet, citrus and papaya.
  • vs RS11: the other parent, all apricot, peach and citrus with a focused, giggly high. Magic Marker is gassier and heavier.
  • vs Magnetic Marker: a different cross — Permanent Marker × Dosidos per AllBud, sold as G13 Labs seeds. Similar name, different second parent.
  • vs Jealousy and Sherbanger: sherbet-family gas strains in the same flavor neighborhood, with less of the marker ink.
  • vs Super Boof: if you want sweet fruit plus loud gas and real potency, Super Boof is the other in-stock lane on our shelf.

Who Magic Marker Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: Permanent Marker fans who want a little more fruit, evening smokers, social sessions with friends, and anyone who likes loud, chemical "exotic" noses.

Poor fit: beginners — reviewers call it very potent — and anyone who needs to stay sharp for hours. If ammonia and ink sound unpleasant, skip the whole marker family. For the closest thing on our shelf, Permanent Marker is the pick, from $65 for a half ounce.

How to Use Magic Marker THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to separate the candy and citrus from the gas. Around 350–380°F the fruit and limonene come through; 390–410°F brings out the pepper, pine and heavier body.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15 minutes — this one can sneak up. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full relaxed, talkative arc without tipping into couch-lock. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 24% of reviewers), and Seed Junky pitches it as relief "for a stressful day."
  • Anxiety: about 18% of Leafly reviewers. Keep the dose low — potent strains can push the other way.
  • Low mood: about 15% of Leafly reviewers report help with depression.
  • Pain and sleep: one reviewer reports help with inflammation, pain and PTSD; another slept nine and a half hours.

For a plain-language primer on how terpenes are thought to shape these effects, see Project CBD on terpenes. Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the only negatives Leafly lists.
  • Heaviness and sleepiness — at higher doses, reviewers describe being unable to move for hours.
  • Anxiety — not a top-reported negative for Magic Marker, but both parents list it on Leafly, so start low.

Is Magic Marker good for sleep? At a larger evening dose, often yes. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is Magic Marker Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask for the breeder. Seed Junky Genetics is the documented source; Rainbow Marker and Magnetic Marker are different selections or crosses.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Ink and fruit. A real Magic Marker smells like marker fumes plus candy and citrus. Flat, hay-like or "very muted" flower is old or badly cured.
  • Dense, frosty buds with violet streaks and orange hairs. Thin trichome coverage is a red flag for a cut bred for bag appeal.
  • Sticky, not crispy. Overdried flower loses the volatile funk first — and the funk is the point.

Growing Magic Marker

Magic Marker is mostly sold as clone-only flower and pre-rolls; we didn't find official Seed Junky seed listings or grow specs, and GrowDiaries' strain page wouldn't load for us. What we can say:

  • Flowering: no published figure for Magic Marker. Rainbow Marker, the same cross from Lit Farms, is listed at about 60 days on SeedFinder; JointCommerce says 8–9 weeks.
  • Outdoor: it can be grown outside — Pacific Roots Farm grew the Nasha hash crop sun-grown in Humboldt soil.
  • Training: JointCommerce suggests topping and a screen, expecting a 1.5–2× stretch after the flip.
  • Harvest: watch the trichomes — mostly cloudy with a few amber for a heavier finish.
  • Smell control: this is a marker strain. Plan on carbon filtration.
