Sour OG Strain: Where Sour Diesel Meets OG Kush
The Sour OG strain is exactly what the name promises: Sour Diesel crossed with OG Kush. The best-documented version comes from The Cali Connection, which paired its Sour Diesel cut with an SFV OG Kush F4 male. The result smells like sour lemon and fuel over a kushy, piney base, hits quickly with a happy, talkative head high, then settles into a relaxed body. Leafly lists it at 22% THC and notes its "one-hit-quit" reputation. It sits in the gassy corner of our THCA flower collection.
It also gets confused with its own relatives. Sour OG is not Sour Diesel, and it's not OG Sour Diesel (a later Cali Connection cross that bred Sour OG back to East Coast Sour Diesel). Below: the lineage and where sources disagree, the two phenotypes, the terpenes, what the high feels like, how strong it really is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Sour OG's frosty buds.

Sour OG Strain Genetics & Lineage
- Type: Hybrid. The breeder describes its Sour OG as "60/40 Sativa/Indica"; AllBud lists it as an even 50/50; Leafly simply calls it a balanced hybrid. Effects reports split the same way — an energetic start and a relaxed finish.
- Ancestry: Sour Diesel × OG Kush. On SeedFinder, The Cali Connection describes it as its "original sour d cut" crossed with its SFV OG Kush F4 male — so the OG side is the SFV OG branch of the Kush family.
- Breeder: The Cali Connection is the breeder of record for the feminized seed line. Other seed companies sell their own versions under the same name, which is one reason descriptions vary.
- THC: Leafly lists 22%; SeedFinder about 20.5%; strain guides cite 18–24%, with exceptional batches above 25%. AllBud's 13–17% is the outlier.
- CBD: Negligible — Leafly lists 0%, SeedFinder about 0.2%.
- Aliases: Sour OG Kush, "Sog."
Where the sources disagree
Most databases agree on Sour Diesel × OG Kush. AllBud is the exception: it lists Sour OG as a three-way cross of OG Kush, Blueberry and Sour Diesel — the same three-way it gives for a separate entry called "OG Sour," which it says is also sold as Sour OG. That looks like two different strains sharing a name, so a jar labeled "Sour OG" with a sweet, berry-forward nose may be the Blueberry version rather than the classic fuel-and-lemon cut. The breeder's own description — Sour D × SFV OG Kush — is the one we follow here.
Sour OG is not OG Sour Diesel
Leafly lists OG Sour Diesel (also called GSD) as its own Cali Connection strain: Sour OG × East Coast Sour Diesel. It's a child of Sour OG, pushed back toward the East Coast Sour Diesel side, with a caryophyllene-led profile and a cheesier, lemon-diesel flavor. Leafly also lists Rebel Sour as another Sour OG offspring.
The two phenotypes
SeedFinder records two known Sour OG phenotypes from The Cali Connection's seeds:
- Pheno #1: short, compact and indica-leaning — the OG side showing through, with denser buds and a heavier finish.
- Pheno #2: tall, stretchy and sativa-leaning — closer to Sour Diesel in structure and in its racier, sour-fuel high.
Growers often hunt through several seeds to find a keeper, and that split explains why one jar of Sour OG reads energetic and another puts reviewers on the couch.
Sour OG Terpene Profile
Leafly lists limonene as Sour OG's dominant terpene, followed by myrcene and caryophyllene. Strain guides add pinene, humulene and a trace of linalool, with total terpenes typically around 1.5–2.5%. Caryophyllene deserves a note: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Limonene — sour lemon, the bright lift
Myrcene — earthy, the relaxed body
Caryophyllene — pepper and fuel, the OG bite
Pinene — pine, clear head
Typical relative profile for Sour OG — limonene-led per Leafly. OG-leaning cuts often push caryophyllene and myrcene higher.
- Limonene: The sour lemon and citrus-rind top note from the Sour Diesel side, and part of why the first half of the high feels happy and chatty.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky; it builds the relaxed floor that takes over as the head high fades.
- Caryophyllene: The peppery, fuel-edged bite from the OG side, and the one common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Pinene: Fresh pine, and part of why Sour OG keeps a clear head rather than going foggy at normal doses.
The "sour" isn't one terpene. It's the Sour Diesel family's overall chemistry — citrus terpenes stacked on a sharp, fuel-like funk — and it's loudest in the sativa-leaning phenotype.
Appearance
Sour OG grows dense, resinous buds — Leafly's description and AllBud's reviewers both stress how frosty they are, with one reviewer calling the buds "sugared" up close. Expect lime to forest-green calyxes threaded with peach-to-rust-orange pistils under a thick coat of trichomes. Cooler nights can bring out a faint purple blush on the calyx tips. OG-leaning cuts form tighter, chunkier nugs; the Sour Diesel-leaning pheno makes longer, more spear-shaped buds.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar and the first hit is sour: lemon, citrus rind and sharp fuel. Behind it sit pine, earth and the "kushy" undertone Leafly describes from the OG side. The breeder sums it up as a "fuel sour kerosine funk." Grind it and the gas gets louder, with a grapefruit-peel bitterness and black pepper. Leafly's flavor tags are diesel, pungent and earthy; AllBud's are diesel, lemon and pine. Leafly also notes some versions run fruitier than others — and if yours tastes like berries, you may have the Blueberry-line "OG Sour" instead.
Recreational Effects
Sour OG starts like its Sour Diesel parent and finishes like its OG parent. On Leafly, with nearly 800 reviews, the most-reported effects are:
- Relaxed: the top effect — a calm body that builds as the session goes on.
- Happy: a quick, easy mood lift.
- Talkative: the Sour Diesel side makes it a social strain.
- Uplifted and creative: AllBud's reviewers add euphoric, giggly and creative.
Leafly calls the effects "mostly energizing," but SeedFinder's grow reviewers report relaxing, even couch-locking effects. Both are true depending on the phenotype and how much you take.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First few minutes: a fast head change — upbeat, talkative, sharp.
- 20–60 minutes: the OG side arrives. The body loosens while the mood stays up.
- 1–3 hours: a gradual settle into calm. At higher doses it turns heavy.
That "one-hit-quit" reputation is the practical takeaway: one or two hits is often the whole session.

Sour OG's dense, frosty buds burn slow and gassy in a short clear glass bong.

How Strong Is Sour OG?
Sour OG is a strong strain, though not a record-setter. The numbers by source:
- Leafly: 22% THC, flagged as "higher THC than average."
- SeedFinder: about 20.5% THC, with roughly 0.6% THCV and 0.25% CBG.
- Strain guides: 18–24% is typical; exceptional batches go above 25%.
- AllBud: 13–17% — well below everyone else, and possibly the Blueberry-line version.
So expect low-20s THC from a good batch. What makes it feel stronger than the number is the speed: the head high lands within minutes, which is where the "one-hit-quit" label comes from. SeedFinder's grow reviewers also describe it as long-lasting.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Sour OG batch against the 18–24% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Sour OG vs Similar Strains
- vs Sour Diesel: the most common mix-up. Sour Diesel is the sativa parent — racier, more energetic, longer in the head, and leaner in the body. Sour OG keeps the sour fuel nose but adds OG Kush's earth, pine and a relaxed body. If Sour Diesel makes you edgy, Sour OG is the gentler version.
- vs OG Kush: the other parent — earthier, piney and heavier. Sour OG is brighter, more citrus-forward and more social.
- vs SFV OG: the specific OG line in the Cali Connection cross — lemony, piney and more relaxing.
- vs Headband: often listed as another OG Kush × Sour Diesel cross, so it's the closest sibling. Headband is known for a pressure-around-the-temples head feel and a creamier lemon-diesel flavor.
- vs Super Sour Diesel and East Coast Sour Diesel: sourer and more energetic, without the OG weight.
- vs Mule Fuel: GMO Cookies × Lurch. It shares Sour OG's loud gas and heavy finish but leans indica and earthier, without the bright sour-lemon lift. It's the closest gas-forward option on our shelf.
Who Sour OG Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: fans of fuel and citrus flavors; afternoon and evening sessions with friends; anyone who likes Sour Diesel's nose but not its edge.
Poor fit: beginners who don't wait between hits, anyone prone to THC anxiety at high doses, or someone who needs a pure wake-and-bake strain — the OG half will slow you down. For something more energetic on our shelf, try Dayglow Mousse.
How to Use Sour OG THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the sour lemon under the fuel. Around 350–380°F keeps the citrus and pine; 390–410°F brings out the peppery OG side.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small hit, then wait 15 minutes — this is a one-hit-quit strain for many people. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Stress: the most-cited reason, at about 38% of Leafly reviewers.
- Anxiety: about 34% report help — at low doses. The fast head rush can do the opposite if you overdo it.
- Low mood: about 29%, consistent with the happy, talkative effects.
- Appetite and aches: AllBud also tags appetite loss, headaches and pain.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry eyes and dry mouth — Leafly's top two negatives.
- Dizziness — the third most-reported, usually from taking too much too fast.
- Racing heart or anxiety — possible at high doses, as with any potent THC strain.
- Vivid dreams — one AllBud reviewer reported vivid, odd dreams.
Is Sour OG good for sleep? Not at a small dose — it's happy and social first. A larger evening dose can turn heavy enough to help some people wind down. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Sour OG Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Sour and OG on the nose. A real Sour OG has sharp lemon-fuel up top and earthy pine underneath. All sweetness and berry suggests the Blueberry-line "OG Sour."
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Dense, frosty buds with trichomes inside the bud, not just on top.
- Ask about the source. A seller who knows it's the Cali Connection line (or which seed line it is) is a good sign.
- A proper cure — hay or grass smell means it was rushed, and it kills the sour top note first.
Growing Sour OG
Sour OG is a productive plant. The challenge is managing the Sour Diesel stretch and figuring out which phenotype you have.
- Flowering: 65–75 days per the breeder (SeedFinder averages about 70); AllBud says 8–9 weeks.
- Yield: 600+ g/m² indoors per the breeder; AllBud rates it medium.
- Height: depends on phenotype — pheno #2 stretches tall like Sour Diesel; pheno #1 stays short and compact. Top or train early.
- Outdoors: harvest from late September to mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Seeds: The Cali Connection sells feminized Sour OG; other seed companies sell their own Sour OG and Sour OG Kush lines.

No. Sour Diesel is one of Sour OG's parents. Sour Diesel is racier and more energetic; Sour OG keeps the sour fuel aroma but adds OG Kush's earthy, piney flavor and a relaxed body.
Is Sour OG the same as OG Sour Diesel?
No. OG Sour Diesel (GSD) is a Cali Connection cross of Sour OG with East Coast Sour Diesel — a child of Sour OG, not another name for it.
How strong is Sour OG?
