Tropicana Cherry Strain: Tangerine, Tart Cherry and a Daytime Lift
The Tropicana Cherry strain is a sativa-leaning hybrid from Colorado's Relentless Genetics, made by crossing Tropicana Cookies with Cherry Cookies. Leafly sums it up: it "smells like a dank tangerines and cherry, with a functional daytime high." The buds turn purple to maroon, the flavor is sweet-and-sour citrus with ripe cherry, and the high is focused, uplifted and energetic rather than sleepy. It sits on the fruity, uplifting side of our THCA flower collection.
It goes by several names. You'll see it as Trop Cherry, Tropicanna Cherries, Cherry Trop and, very often, the tropical cherry strain. That last name is also used for a different strain, so it helps to know which one you're buying. Below we cover the lineage, the naming confusion, what the potency numbers mean, how the high plays out, how to use it, how to grow it and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Tropicana Cherry's purple-streaked, frosty buds.

- Type: Sativa-leaning hybrid. AllBud lists it as 60% sativa / 40% indica, and Leafly's Tropical Cherry entry gives the same split.
- Ancestry: Tropicana Cookies (Girl Scout Cookies × Tangie) × Cherry Cookies F3, per Leafly and SeedFinder.
- Breeder: Relentless Genetics, Colorado. SeedFinder calls it one of the breeder's "flagship" strains.
- THC: AllBud 16–21%. Leafly 25% (24% on its Tropical Cherry page), with about 1% CBG.
- CBD: Trace amounts only.
- Aliases: Trop Cherry, Tropical Cherry, Tropic Cherry, Tropicanna Cherries, Tropicana Cherries, Cherry Trop, Cherry Tropicana.
What each parent brings
Tropicana Cookies, from Oni Seed Co, is Girl Scout Cookies × Tangie. It contributes the tangerine and orange-peel nose, the purple color and the energetic, sativa-style head high. Cherry Cookies is listed by Leafly as Cherry Pie (aka Cherry Kush) × Cookies F2, bred by Cyc. It contributes tart cherry, tight purple buds and deep orange pistils. Relentless used an F3 of Cherry Cookies, meaning a third generation bred to make its traits more consistent. Both parents trace back to GSC, which accounts for the dense, frosty Cookies structure under the fruit. Through Cherry Pie, the cherry side also links to Cherry Pie and Cherry Kush.
Awards
Weedmaps credits Tropicana Cherry with first place at the 2022 High Times Cannabis Cup in Michigan (People's Choice) and second place in the hybrid category at Rooster Magazine's 2020 THC Classic in Colorado. Leafly also mentions the 2022 Michigan Cup win. We could not find the official results pages to confirm the exact categories, so treat those details as reported.
Trop Cherry vs Tropical Cherry vs Tropicana Cherry: are they the same?
Usually, yes. Trop Cherry, Tropicana Cherry and Tropicana Cherries all refer to Relentless Genetics' Tropicana Cookies × Cherry Cookies. Leafly's "Tropical Cherry aka Tropic Cherry" page lists the same Relentless cross, so most of the time the tropical cherry strain is this strain too. But Weedmaps warns that Tropical Cherry "has two genetic identities in circulation." The other is a Trichome Jungle Seeds cross of Cherry Cookies with a strain listed as "Lillt," which leans toward strawberry and tropical cherry. Barney's Farm also sells a "Tropicana Cherry" seed with a different stated cross (Tropicana Cookies × Tropicanna Cherry). If the lineage matters to you, ask the seller which breeder it came from.
Tropicana Cherry Terpene Profile
Leafly's lab data lists caryophyllene as the dominant terpene, followed by limonene and pinene. Its Tropical Cherry entry swaps pinene for linalool. Some dispensary menus lead with limonene and myrcene, and JointCommerce argues the orange-forward phenotypes run terpinolene-heavy like their Tangie ancestor. As with most modern hybrids, the cut and the grower make a big difference. Caryophyllene is worth knowing about: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — pepper, warmth, the Cookies backbone
Limonene — tangerine and sour citrus
Pinene — pine, alertness
Terpinolene — bright, fruity-floral lift in orange-leaning cuts
Typical relative profile for Tropicana Cherry, caryophyllene-led per Leafly. Orange-forward cuts can read more limonene- or terpinolene-heavy.
- Caryophyllene: The peppery warmth under the fruit, from the Cookies side of both parents. It's the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Limonene: The tangerine and sour citrus from Tangie, and a big part of the upbeat mood.
- Pinene: Fresh pine, and part of why the high feels clear and focused.
- Terpinolene: Fruity, floral and a little piney. It shows up in some orange-leaning phenotypes and adds energy.
The cherry isn't a single terpene. It comes from the Cherry Pie side's fruit esters combined with these terpenes, and it's loudest right after you grind.
Appearance
Tropicana Cherry looks great in the jar. Leafly calls it "a stunner in the grow room with an electric purple look." AllBud describes "oversized rounded forest green nugs with deep purple undertones, light amber hairs and tiny frosty white crystal trichomes." SeedFinder's breeder notes mention "maroon-coloured buds and purple-tinted leaves." Weedmaps describes larger-than-average buds in deep green and purple with yellow-orange pistils. The purple comes from both parents, and cooler night temperatures late in flower bring out more of it.
Aroma and Flavor
Open the jar and you get tangerine first, then ripe, slightly sour cherry. AllBud describes the nose as "heavier and sourer in nature with a sharp citrus overtone," with cherry and an earthy note that grows as you break the bud. The flavor is "sweet and sour citrus wrapped up with overly ripe cherries and earthy nuttiness, intensifying in fruitiness the more that you toke." Leafly's reviewers tag it tree fruit, tropical and berry. Barney's Farm's version leans more tropical, with pineapple, mango and passion fruit. The exhale is smooth, with a light peppery, cookie-dough finish.
Recreational Effects
This is a daytime strain. On Leafly, where it holds 4.6 stars across about 160 ratings, the most-reported effects are:
- Focused: the top effect. A clear, on-task head that works for chores, errands or creative work.
- Uplifted: a quick mood lift with a lot of fruit flavor.
- Energetic: it wakes you up instead of slowing you down.
- Talkative: listed on Leafly's Tropical Cherry page, so it's a good social strain.
- Calm, creative and euphoric: AllBud's list. The Cookies side keeps the body loose without heavy sedation.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5 minutes: a bright, quick head change. Colors and music feel sharper.
- 15–45 minutes: the peak. You're focused, chatty and motivated, with a light, easy body.
- 1–3 hours: a gentle comedown with little couch-lock unless you smoke a lot.
Because it's energizing, the main risk is overdoing it. Racy thoughts are more likely than sleepiness.

How Strong Is Tropicana Cherry? Is It a Good Strain?
Tropicana Cherry is moderate to strong. Reported numbers vary widely by source:
- AllBud: 16–21% THC.
- Leafly: 25% (24% on its Tropical Cherry page), with about 1% CBG.
- JointCommerce: 18–26% across legal markets, occasionally higher.
- Barney's Farm (its seed version): up to 28%.
Is it a good strain? Users rate it highly: 4.6 stars on Leafly across about 160 ratings, and 4.7 on its Tropical Cherry page. Breeders like it too. SeedFinder lists 58 direct hybrids, including crosses with Donny Burger and GMO Cookies. It isn't built for record potency. People pick it for flavor, color and a clear head.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Tropicana Cherry batch against the 16–26% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Tropicana Cherry vs Similar Strains
- vs Tropicana Cookies: the orange parent. Tropicana Cookies is sharper, more citrus-only and a bit more energetic. Tropicana Cherry adds ripe cherry and rounds out the high.
- vs Tangie: the tangerine grandparent and a classic energetic sativa, with more orange and no cherry.
- vs Cherry Pie: the cherry ancestor through Cherry Cookies. It's sweeter, heavier and more relaxing.
- vs Lemon Cherry Gelato: the same lemon-or-orange-plus-cherry idea with GSC in both family trees, but LCG is indica-dominant and gassier, with a happy start that turns calm. It's the closest fruit match we have in stock. Expect more body and less energy.
- vs Black Cherry Gelato and Mimosa: other cherry or citrus hybrids people compare it with. Mimosa is the brighter citrus daytime option.
Leafly's similarity tool also points to G13 Haze, LSD and Blueberry Haze for comparable terpene profiles, per Green Choice's strain page.
Who Tropicana Cherry Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: daytime smokers, people who want flavor and focus, social plans, creative work, and fans of orange and cherry flavors.
Poor fit: anyone looking for a sleep strain, and people who get racy or anxious on energetic sativas. Leafly lists "anxious" among its top negatives. If you want the cherry with a calmer finish, Lemon Cherry Gelato is our relaxing option.
How to Use Tropicana Cherry THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the tangerine and cherry before the pepper. Around 350–370°F keeps the bright citrus; 380–400°F brings out more body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 10–15 minutes. It's energizing, and too much can feel racy. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full focused lift. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud. They are not established clinical outcomes, and no trials have studied this strain specifically. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: about 26% of Leafly reviewers. "Anxious" is also one of its top negatives, so keep the dose small.
- Low mood: about 22%, consistent with the uplifted headline effect.
- Stress: about 19%.
- Fatigue: AllBud lists it, and the energetic profile is why many people use it during the day.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes: the most common complaints.
- Headache: Leafly's most-reported negative for this strain.
- Anxiety or racy thoughts: more likely with big doses, low tolerance or lots of caffeine.
Is Tropicana Cherry good for sleep? Not really. It's energizing, so save it for daytime. Don't drive after using it. Talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is It Real Tropicana Cherry? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask about the breeder. Relentless Genetics' Tropicana Cookies × Cherry Cookies is the original. "Tropical Cherry" from another breeder may be a different plant.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Tangerine and cherry. A good jar has both. Flat, earthy flower usually means it's old or was dried too fast.
- Purple and frost. Purple-to-maroon color and good trichome coverage are typical, but color alone doesn't indicate potency.
- A proper cure: terpenes this bright fade fast. A hay smell means it was rushed.
Growing Tropicana Cherry
Tropicana Cherry grows vigorously, takes training well and colors up in cool nights. The original Relentless cut is mostly passed around as clones, and SeedFinder notes it was never released as feminized seed.
- Flowering: about 60 days per SeedFinder, 60–65 days for Barney's Farm's version, and 8–10 weeks per JointCommerce.
- Yield: Barney's Farm lists 550–650 g/m² indoors and up to 1,000 g per plant outdoors.
- Height: medium, about 100–140 cm indoors and 120–180 cm outdoors (Barney's Farm). Expect a solid stretch after the flip.
- Outdoors: best in warm, dry climates. One AllBud reviewer found it hard to finish in a cool, short season.
- Color: a modest day/night temperature drop in the last two weeks brings out the purple.
