Zushi Strain: The Cross That Started the Zushi Family
The Zushi strain is Zkittlez — now officially "Original Z" — crossed with Kush Mints by The TENCo, a Los Angeles brand that Weedmaps describes as having roots in the UK. It pairs the candy-fruit of one of the best-tasting strains ever bred with the gas, resin and weight of the modern mints family. Expect a sweet, cheesy, chemical nose, a fast and focused lift, and around 24% THC. It sits in the candy-and-gas lane of our THCA flower collection.
Zushi is also one of the most confused names on any menu. Half of the search results for "Zushi" are actually about Blue Zushi, the family's star cut, and the name now appears on a dozen seed lines that aren't the original clone. Below: what Zushi actually is, how it relates to Blue Zushi and the rest of the family, what the potency numbers mean, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Zushi's frosty buds.

- Type: Hybrid — and the sources genuinely disagree on the lean. Leafly's description calls it indica-dominant but also says its effects are "mostly energizing"; AllBud lists it 70% sativa; SeedFinder calls the seed version a balanced hybrid.
- Ancestry: Zkittlez × Kush Mints. Kush Mints itself is Bubba Kush × Animal Mints; Zkittlez traces to Grape Ape and Grapefruit.
- Breeder: The TENCo, per Leafly and Weedmaps.
- THC: Leafly lists 24%; AllBud 24–25%; SeedFinder gives 15–25% for the S1 seed line.
- CBD: Not listed by any major database — assume negligible.
- Aliases: Zus, Zush. Not to be confused with Blue Zushi, Yellow Zushi or Pink Zushi.
Why "Original Z"?
Zkittlez was renamed "Original Z" after a well-publicized trademark dispute over the candy-adjacent name, which is why Leafly and AllBud list Zushi's parent as Original Z while older sources say Zkittlez. It's the same strain.
Zushi vs Blue Zushi: what's the difference?
This is where most people get lost, because both list the same two parents — Zkittlez × Kush Mints — and both trace to The TENCo. Leafly frames Zushi as the parent name that "has spawned many popular strains like Pink Zushi and Blue Zushi." Blue Zushi is the cut that made the family famous: it won Best Tasting and Best Overall at the first Zalympix in Los Angeles in 2021, according to Marijuana Retail Report. The breeder hasn't published how the original Zushi selection and the Blue Zushi cut relate pheno by pheno, so treat any confident family tree you see online with caution.
The practical differences, based on what reviewers report: Zushi reads gassier, cheesier and more energizing, with Leafly flavor tags of chemical, blue cheese and diesel. Blue Zushi reads fruitier, mintier and more relaxing, with blue-tinted frost. Our Blue Zushi guide covers that cut in detail.
The rest of the Zushi family
- Blue Zushi — the Zalympix-winning flagship.
- Yellow Zushi — another TENCo variant, often compared with Blue on reviews.
- Gas Station Zushi and Zoy Zauce — listed by Leafly as Zushi child strains.
- Pistol Whip — Zushi × Gary Payton, per SeedFinder.
- Pink Zushi — despite the name, Leafly and GrowDiaries both list it as Zkittlez × Mag Landrace, with no Kush Mints, and they disagree on the breeder (Alien Labs vs The TENCo). It's a Zkittlez cousin, not a Zushi child.
Seed banks have also adopted the name: SeedFinder lists a Botafarm California "Zushi S1" made by selfing a Zushi clone, plus Zushi-named lines from other breeders. Those are seed projects, not the original TENCo clone.
Zushi Terpene Profile
No major database publishes a Zushi-specific terpene panel — Leafly doesn't list one at all. What we can say: lab work on the Blue Zushi side of the family points to caryophyllene and limonene as the leaders, with myrcene, humulene and linalool behind them, and Zushi's own reviewers describe the peppery, "hint of cigar" edge typical of caryophyllene. The chart below is a family-based estimate, not a lab result.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — pepper, gas, the Kush Mints backbone
Limonene — candy-citrus lift from the Z side
Myrcene — earthy, relaxed body
Humulene — woody, herbal depth
Estimated from Blue Zushi lab data and parent strains — no Zushi-specific terpene panel has been published. Check the COA on any batch you buy.
- Caryophyllene: The peppery, gassy backbone from Kush Mints — and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Limonene: The bright candy-citrus that Zkittlez is famous for, and part of why Zushi's high reads energizing.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky; it supplies the calm floor once the lift fades.
- Humulene: Woody and herbal — the "fresh herby tinge" reviewers notice under the sweetness.
The blue-cheese note isn't a single terpene. It's the overall chemistry of this cut, and it's the clearest way to tell Zushi apart from its fruitier Blue sibling. For the science, see Ethan Russo's review "Taming THC".
Appearance
Zushi is a bag-appeal strain. AllBud describes "fluffy, heart-shaped and super dense forest green nugs with bright blue undertones" and thick orange hairs; Weedmaps describes deep green and purple buds "glistening with ghostly blue trichomes." SeedFinder notes the blue and purple hues come out most with cooler night temperatures late in flower. Reviewers on Leafly report everything from dark green buds with "very few to zero orange hairs" to "heavy hues of purple with thick layer of trichomes" — so color varies by grower, but heavy frost is consistent.
Aroma and Flavor
Zushi's nose depends on who you ask, and that tells you something about how many different cuts carry the name. Leafly's flavor tags are chemical, blue cheese and diesel, and one reviewer describes "a sweet cheesy aroma with a fresh herby tinge." Others report "straight candy terps," orange rind, lemon and apple. AllBud leans tropical: sweet pineapple, juicy mango and a touch of spice. SeedFinder's seed line adds fresh lemon, cream and a petrol background.
The common thread: candy sweetness from the Z side over a savory, gassy, slightly cheesy base from Kush Mints. The inhale is sweet and fruity; the exhale is gas, pepper and funk. If a jar is pure candy with no gas or funk, it's more likely a Zkittlez-leaning cut than true Zushi.
Recreational Effects
Leafly's users say Zushi's effects are "mostly energizing," with these most-reported effects:
- Focused: a clear, functional head — good for work, music or projects.
- Energetic: AllBud says the high "will hit you almost as soon as you exhale."
- Aroused and social: a talkative, mood-lifting start.
- Happy and euphoric: the mood lift reviewers mention most.
- Relaxed: a calm body that grows as the high winds down.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
Weedmaps describes a high that starts with mild euphoria, turns energized and uplifted, then settles into "comfortable lethargy." Reviewer reports line up with that arc:
- First 5 minutes: a fast head change — one reviewer says "she hits hard right away."
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — focused, chatty, energized, with a light body.
- 1–3 hours: the Kush Mints side takes over and the body gets heavier. Larger doses can tip into "straight stoned."
Because it hits fast, Zushi is easy to dose by feel — as long as you wait between hits.

How Strong Is Zushi? Is Zushi Overhyped?
Zushi is a strong strain, but not a record-breaker on paper:
- Leafly: 24% THC, "higher THC than average."
- AllBud: 24–25% THC.
- SeedFinder (Botafarm S1 seeds): 15–25%.
The reputation comes as much from flavor and bag appeal as from potency. That's also why "is Zushi overhyped?" is one of the most-discussed questions about it on Reddit — growers and rosin makers argue about whether the price matches the smoke. Our honest take: a well-grown, true TENCo-lineage Zushi is a top-shelf candy-gas strain. A random "Zushi" from an unknown seed line is just a name. Judge the jar, not the label.
Which Zushi strain is best? It depends on what you want. Blue Zushi is the award winner and the fruitier, more relaxing cut; original Zushi is gassier and more energizing; Yellow Zushi has its own fans. Taste is personal — but Blue Zushi has the trophies.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Zushi batch against the 15–25% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Zushi vs Similar Strains
- vs Blue Zushi: same listed parents. Blue Zushi is fruitier, mintier and more relaxing with blue-tinted frost; Zushi is gassier, cheesier and more energizing.
- vs Zkittlez: Zkittlez is pure candy-fruit with a gentle, calm high. Zushi keeps the candy and adds gas, funk and more horsepower.
- vs Kush Mints: mintier, earthier and heavier. Zushi is sweeter and more energetic.
- vs Gush Mints: another Kush Mints cross that pairs candy-fruit with mint and gas — a close cousin in style.
- vs Blue Lobster: a fellow Zalympix winner with a similar candy-and-gas reputation.
- vs Straw Gua Mintz: our closest in-stock match — another Kush Mints cross, Strawberry Guava × Kush Mints, sativa-leaning, with bright fruit up front and a cool minty exhale. It's fruitier and less cheesy than Zushi; for more chemical gas, Permanent Marker is closer on the nose.
Who Zushi Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: flavor chasers who like candy with gas underneath; daytime and early-evening use; creative, social or focused sessions.
Poor fit: anyone prone to THC headaches or anxiety (both show up in reviews), beginners who might overdo a fast-hitting strain, or someone looking for a sleep strain. For something gentler, Dayglow Mousse is a lighter place to start on our shelf.
How to Use Zushi THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the candy over the gas. Around 350–380°F keeps the sweet top notes; 390–410°F brings out the Kush Mints weight.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15 minutes — Zushi hits fast. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Low mood: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (about 31%).
- Stress: about 27% of reviewers.
- Pain: about 22% — several reviewers single out body relief.
- Fatigue: AllBud lists fatigue among reported uses, consistent with the energizing start.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints.
- Headache — one of Leafly's top-listed negatives; some reviewers report it after the first hit.
- Anxiety or paranoia — reported occasionally, mostly at higher doses.
Is Zushi good for sleep? Not usually — it's energizing first, and only turns heavy late or at high doses. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Zushi Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask where the genetics came from. A good seller can tell you whether it's a TENCo-lineage clone or a seed line. "Zushi" with no story is a warning sign.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Candy and gas. Real Zushi has both. All sugar, no funk suggests a different cut.
- Frost and density, with trichomes inside the bud, not just on top. Purple or blue hues are a bonus, not a requirement.
- A proper cure — a hay or grass smell means it was rushed, and it will mute the terpenes that make Zushi worth buying.
Growing Zushi
The original Zushi is a clone-only TENCo cut, so home growers are almost always working from seed lines. SeedFinder's data on the Botafarm California Zushi S1:
- Flowering: about 63 days; 8–10 weeks indoors.
- Yield: 350–500 g/m² indoors; 400–1,000 g per plant outdoors.
- Structure: compact and robust, with dense, resin-heavy buds that suit extraction. Responds well to topping and SCROG.
- Color: cooler night temperatures late in flower bring out blue and purple hues.
- Outdoors: harvest around October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Seeds: feminized only for the S1; plenty of other "Zushi" lines exist, so check the breeder before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Zushi indica or sativa?
Zushi is a hybrid, and sources disagree on the lean. Leafly's description calls it indica-dominant but says its effects are mostly energizing, AllBud lists it 70% sativa, and SeedFinder calls the seed version balanced. In practice it starts energizing and focused, then settles into calm.
What is Zushi a cross of?
Zkittlez (now called Original Z) × Kush Mints. Kush Mints is itself Bubba Kush × Animal Mints.
Who bred Zushi?
The TENCo, a Los Angeles brand, per Leafly and Weedmaps. Botafarm California sells a separate Zushi S1 seed line made by selfing a Zushi clone.
What is the difference between Zushi and Blue Zushi?
Both list Zkittlez × Kush Mints as parents and trace to The TENCo. Zushi is the family name and reads gassier, cheesier and more energizing; Blue Zushi is the fruitier, mintier, more relaxing cut that won Best Tasting and Best Overall at the first Zalympix in 2021.
Which Zushi strain is best?
It depends on taste. Blue Zushi has the awards and the fruitiest profile; original Zushi is gassier and more energizing; Yellow Zushi has its own following. A well-grown, properly cured jar of any of them beats a famous name grown badly.
Why is Blue Zushi so popular?
Flavor and bag appeal. It combines Zkittlez candy-fruit with Kush Mints gas and frost, shows blue and purple hues, and won Best Tasting and Best Overall at the first Zalympix in Los Angeles in 2021.
Is Zushi top shelf?
A true TENCo-lineage Zushi, well grown and well cured, is top shelf. Because so many seed lines now use the name, judge the jar — frost, candy-and-gas nose, a current COA — rather than the label.
Is Zushi overhyped?
It's one of the most-debated strains on Reddit for exactly that reason. The hype is mostly about flavor and looks, not record THC — Leafly lists 24%. If you want candy-and-gas flavor, it delivers; if you only want the strongest number, there are stronger strains.
How strong is Zushi?
Leafly lists 24% THC and AllBud 24–25%; the Botafarm S1 seed line is listed at 15–25%. It hits fast, so start with one or two small puffs.
What does Zushi taste like?
Candy sweetness over a savory, gassy base. Leafly's flavor tags are chemical, blue cheese and diesel; other reviewers report citrus and orange rind, and AllBud describes tropical pineapple and mango.
Is Pink Zushi a Zushi strain?
Not genetically. Leafly and GrowDiaries list Pink Zushi as Zkittlez × Mag Landrace, with no Kush Mints, and they disagree on the breeder. It shares Zkittlez with Zushi but isn't a Zushi cross.
Is Zushi good for sleep?
Not usually. It's energizing and focused first; only late in the high or at larger doses does the Kush Mints side turn heavy.
Where can I buy Zushi THCA flower online?
Zushi isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. The closest match is Straw Gua Mintz THCA Flower — like Zushi, a Kush Mints cross, with bright strawberry-guava fruit up front and a cool minty exhale, from $29, third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75. It's fruitier than Zushi; for more chemical gas, try Permanent Marker.
