Clementine Strain: Crockett Family Farms' Citrus Wake-Up Call
The Clementine strain is a sativa-dominant cross of Tangie and Lemon Skunk, bred by Crockett Family Farms on California's Central Coast. It smells like a freshly peeled clementine with a squeeze of lemon, hits clean and fast, and is one of the most reliable "wake-and-bake" strains around — focused, energetic and upbeat rather than foggy. It's also the mother line behind Mimosa, one of the biggest citrus strains of the last decade. It fits the bright, daytime corner of our THCA flower collection.
Below: where Clementine comes from, what the conflicting THC numbers really mean, why terpinolene (not limonene) is the terpene doing most of the work, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, how it compares with Tangie, Mimosa and other citrus strains, and how to judge a good bag.
A 360° look at Clementine's frosty buds.

- Type: Sativa-dominant hybrid. Cannigma quotes the growers' own description — "a 70% sativa / 30% indica cross." Leafly files it simply as a sativa; AllBud lists it 50/50 but notes the sativa lean. Every source agrees on the effects: uplifting and energetic.
- Ancestry: Tangie × Lemon Skunk. Tangie is a California Orange × Skunk cross; Lemon Skunk descends from two Skunk lines selected for lemon. That makes Clementine heavily Skunk #1-rooted on both sides.
- Breeder: Crockett Family Farms, California — credited by Weedmaps, Cannigma, Daybreak and E10 Labs. Leafly and AllBud don't list a breeder.
- THC: Leafly 18%; AllBud 17–19%; STRNG Seeds 17–20%; Blimburn Seeds 18–22%; Weedmaps 20–27%; Hytiva lists a lab range of 24–27%.
- Other cannabinoids: CBD is negligible (about 0.2%). Leafly lists about 1% CBG; Cannigma's lab averages show 0.88%.
- Not the same as: Clementine Kush, which is a separate strain with its own Leafly entry.
The Crockett connection — and the award question
Crockett Family Farms is one of California's best-known citrus breeders. According to Cannigma, the Lemon Skunk used in Clementine was a phenotype that won first place at the 2014 Emerald Cup out of 257 entries, and the same growers are credited with Tangie (which many sources also co-credit to DNA Genetics). Clementine took the bright orange of Tangie and sharpened it with Lemon Skunk's tart, zesty edge.
Its award history is told several ways. AllBud and STRNG Seeds list 2nd place, Best Sativa Concentrate at the 2015 High Times Cannabis Cup in Michigan; Leafly says simply that it won "best sativa concentrate in 2015"; at least one retailer claims first place; and Cannigma names a separate first-place Best Sativa win at the 2015 Blazers Cup. The consistent thread: Clementine made its name as a concentrate strain, because its terpene-rich resin presses and extracts beautifully.
Clementine's famous children
- Mimosa: Clementine × Purple Punch, bred by Symbiotic Genetics according to GreenState. It keeps the orange nose and adds a sweeter, fruitier, slightly calmer finish.
- Strawberry Mimosa: listed by Leafly as a further Clementine descendant through Mimosa.
- Blueberry Clementine: Clementine × Blueberry, per Cannigma — a SERP favorite question is whether it's indica or sativa; it inherits a calmer Blueberry side, so it typically runs more balanced than Clementine.
Clementine Terpene Profile
You'd expect a strain named after an orange to be limonene-led — and some retailers say it is. But the lab-based sources point elsewhere. Leafly lists terpinolene as dominant, followed by myrcene and pinene; Hytiva's lab data shows terpinolene (0.98 mg/g) ahead of beta-caryophyllene and myrcene; Cannigma's averages put myrcene (0.31%) and terpinolene (0.30%) neck and neck, then caryophyllene. Limonene is present, but the citrus "pop" is mostly terpinolene — the same terpene behind Jack Herer and Durban Poison.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Terpinolene — bright, fresh citrus-pine, the energetic lift
Myrcene — herbal, earthy sweetness, softens the edge
Pinene — pine, alertness
Caryophyllene — peppery, spicy finish
Limonene — orange-peel zest
Typical relative profile for Clementine — terpinolene-led per Leafly and Hytiva lab data. Batches vary; some read more limonene-forward.
- Terpinolene: Fresh, piney-floral citrus. It's uncommon as a lead terpene and is strongly associated with clear, energetic sativas.
- Myrcene: Earthy, herbal sweetness. It keeps the high from feeling jittery and supplies the light body calm.
- Pinene: A pine note and part of why the high reads alert and focused.
- Caryophyllene: The faint spicy, peppery edge on the exhale.
- Limonene: The orange-peel zest on top — present, but rarely the lead in lab data.
The "clementine" smell is the blend: terpinolene's sharp brightness plus limonene's peel, rounded by myrcene's sweetness. A batch that smells flat or hay-like has lost the terpenes that make this strain worth buying.
Appearance
Clementine grows dense, spade-shaped buds in bright yellow-green, threaded with fiery orange pistils — AllBud describes "sparse orange hairs" under a frosty coat of trichomes, and Daybreak calls them "bright green, resin-coated buds and fiery orange pistils." Some cuts show deep-green calyxes with purple hues and golden pistils, per Hytiva. Grow guides describe rock-hard, resin-soaked colas with a crystalline sheen — the resin output that made it a concentrate favorite.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar and the room smells like someone just peeled a bag of clementines. Sweet orange hits first, then tart lemon zest, then a faint earthy, spicy skunk underneath. On Weedmaps, reported flavors break down to citrus (44%), orange (30%) and lemon (26%). The inhale is sweet orange and lemon; the exhale is lighter — herbal, a little piney and earthy, with a peppery edge. Reviewers compare it to fresh orange juice or a citrus-infused herbal tea. AllBud sums it up as "sweet citrusy orange with an earthy aftertaste."
Recreational Effects
Clementine is a doer's strain. Leafly's most-reported effects are focused, energetic and uplifted, and users there call it "perfect for a wake and bake." Expect:
- Energetic: a quick lift in energy and motivation — the reason it's a morning favorite.
- Focused: Hytiva's reviewers note it doesn't produce a spacey, heady fog; it sharpens attention instead.
- Uplifted and happy: a clean mood boost; talkative and social in groups.
- Creative: good for music, writing, painting and problem-solving.
- Lightly relaxed: the ~30% indica side adds a mild body ease, never couch-lock.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5 minutes: a fast, bright head change — pressure behind the eyes, a lift in mood.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — focused, chatty, motivated. This is when chores, workouts and creative projects go fastest.
- 1–3 hours: a gentle taper with a light body calm. STRNG Seeds puts typical duration at 2–3 hours; AllBud notes some users feel a mild crash afterward.
Activities reviewers pair it with: hiking, exercise, yoga, housework, social events and walks through the city.

How Strong Is Clementine?
Clementine's potency numbers are all over the place, and that's normal for a strain that's been grown by many producers for a decade:
- Leafly: 18% THC, about 1% CBG.
- AllBud: 17–19%, which it calls "average."
- Blimburn Seeds: 18–22%.
- Weedmaps: 20–27%.
- Hytiva: a lab range of 24–27% THC, with one listing at 30.53% THCA.
So how strong is it? Mid-range on paper, but it feels stronger than the number because the terpinolene-led high comes on fast and racy. Grown well, modern Clementine cuts land in the low-to-mid 20s. Leafly still describes its potency as "higher THC than average." For a citrus sativa, what matters more than the THC is the terpene content — a 20% batch with loud orange terpenes beats a 27% batch that smells like nothing.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Clementine batch against the 17–27% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Clementine vs Similar Strains
- vs Tangie: the orange parent. Tangie is sweeter and more tangerine; Clementine adds Lemon Skunk's tartness and a slightly more focused, less racy high.
- vs Lemon Skunk: the lemon parent — sharper, skunkier and more lemon than orange.
- vs Mimosa: Clementine's child with Purple Punch. Mimosa is fruitier and a touch calmer; Clementine is cleaner and more energetic.
- vs Tangerine Dream and Super Lemon Haze: fellow citrus sativas. Super Lemon Haze is more lemon and haze-heady; Tangerine Dream is sweeter.
- vs Lemon Cherry Gelato: our assigned in-stock match shares the lemon-citrus top notes, but it's an indica-leaning Gelato-family hybrid — creamier, gassier and heavier in the body. Honest take: if you want Clementine's energy, Dayglow Mousse, a sativa-leaning citrus hybrid from the Agent Orange line, is the closer match on our shelf.
- vs Green Crack and Jack Herer: other terpinolene-forward daytime strains with the same alert, motivated feel.
Who Clementine Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: morning and daytime smokers, people who want to stay productive, creative types, anyone who exercises or hikes high, and citrus-flavor fans.
Poor fit: anyone prone to racing thoughts or THC anxiety at higher doses, and anyone looking for sleep — Clementine is the opposite of a nightcap. For the evening, the heavier Lemon Cherry Gelato keeps the citrus but brings the body.
How to Use Clementine THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the orange. Start around 340–370°F, where terpinolene and limonene shine; above 390°F the flavor flattens and the body effect grows.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15 minutes — the racy edge shows up fast. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full focused, energetic arc without tipping into jitters. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Stress: the top reason on Leafly (about 28% of reviewers).
- Anxiety: about 27% report help — but "anxious" and "paranoid" are also among its top negatives, so low doses matter.
- Low mood: about 26%, consistent with its uplifting, energetic headline effect.
- Fatigue and focus: AllBud and Hytiva reviewers cite chronic fatigue, brain fog and attention issues — the "morning espresso" use case.
- Appetite and nausea: occasionally mentioned by reviewers and retailers.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints.
- Anxiety or paranoia — listed by Leafly among the top negatives; more likely with big doses, low tolerance or coffee on top.
- Jitteriness or a crash — some AllBud reviewers call it "too much of an upper" or report a dip as it wears off.
Is Clementine good for sleep? No — save it for the daytime. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Clementine Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- The orange should hit you. Real Clementine smells like fresh citrus peel the second you open the jar. Faint or grassy means old or badly cured.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC — and ideally terpenes. Look for terpinolene near the top. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Bright color and frost: yellow-green to deep-green buds, orange pistils, and trichomes inside the bud, not just on top.
- Ask about the breeder. Crockett genetics or a known Clementine cut — not a random "orange" relabel.
- Fresh, airtight storage. Citrus terpenes are volatile. Keep it in a sealed glass jar, cool and dark.
Growing Clementine
Clementine is a vigorous, sativa-leaning plant that grows tall and smells loud. Cannigma rates it easy; STRNG Seeds calls it moderate — the main challenges are height and odor control.
- Flowering: about 8–9 weeks indoors per the growers (Weedmaps lists 55–65 days; some seed banks say 8–10 weeks).
- Yield: high — STRNG Seeds reports about 18 oz/m² indoors and 11–15 oz per plant outdoors; E10 Labs reports outdoor plants up to 22 oz.
- Height: stretches tall; top, prune or train early.
- Climate: warm, mildly humid conditions; E10 Labs notes good resistance to pests and mold.
- Outdoors: harvest around mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Odor: very pungent in flower — plan for carbon filtration.

What is Clementine a cross of?
Tangie × Lemon Skunk, bred by Crockett Family Farms in California. Both parents trace back to Skunk genetics, and both are citrus-forward.
What are the effects of Clementine?
Focused, energetic and uplifted are Leafly's top effects. Expect a fast, clear-headed lift with a light body calm — no couch-lock. It's widely called a wake-and-bake strain.
How strong is Clementine?
Leafly lists 18% THC and AllBud 17–19%, while Weedmaps lists 20–27% and Hytiva cites lab results of 24–27%. It feels stronger than its number because the onset is quick and racy.
What does Clementine taste like?
Sweet orange and tart lemon on the inhale, with an earthy, herbal, slightly peppery exhale — often compared to fresh orange juice.
What terpenes are in Clementine?
Terpinolene usually leads, followed by myrcene, pinene and caryophyllene, with limonene adding orange-peel zest.
Is Clementine good for anxiety?
It's mixed. About 27% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but 'anxious' and 'paranoid' are also among its top negatives. Low doses are the safer approach.
Is Clementine good for sleep?
No. It's an energizing daytime strain; most people find it keeps them up rather than puts them down.
Is Mimosa related to Clementine?
Yes — Mimosa is Clementine × Purple Punch, bred by Symbiotic Genetics. It keeps the orange nose with a sweeter, slightly calmer finish.
Is Blueberry Clementine an indica or sativa?
Blueberry Clementine is Clementine crossed with Blueberry. The Blueberry side typically makes it more balanced than Clementine, which is clearly sativa-leaning.
Did Clementine win a Cannabis Cup?
Clementine is best known for concentrate awards: AllBud and STRNG Seeds list 2nd place for Best Sativa Concentrate at the 2015 High Times Cannabis Cup in Michigan, though some sources describe it as a win.
How long does Clementine take to flower?
About 8–9 weeks indoors, with outdoor harvests around mid-October. It grows tall and smells strong, so train it early and filter the air.
Where can I buy Clementine THCA flower online?
Clementine isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. Our assigned citrus match is Lemon Cherry Gelato THCA Flower (½oz $69), which shares the lemon top notes but runs heavier.
