Dark Rainbow Strain: Archive's GMO × Rainbow Belts
The Dark Rainbow strain is a hybrid bred by Archive Seed Bank by crossing GMO — the garlic-and-gas heavyweight also called GMO Cookies or Garlic Cookies — with Rainbow Belts F1, Archive's own sour-candy cultivar. The name says it: the "dark" is GMO's savory funk and heavy body, the "rainbow" is Rainbow Belts' candy and citrus. Expect pepper, garlic and fuel on the nose with lemon-lime candy and tropical fruit underneath, and a giggly, euphoric high that sinks into deep relaxation. It sits at the funky, heavy end of the THCA flower world.
It also gets mixed up a lot. There's a newer Dark Rainbow 2.0 with a different parent, a few strain blogs list the wrong second parent entirely, and potency numbers run from the high teens to the low 30s. Below: the real lineage and where sources disagree, the terpene profile, what the potency numbers mean, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Dark Rainbow's frosty buds.

- Type: Indica-leaning hybrid. AllBud lists it 80% indica / 20% sativa and Weedmaps calls it indica-dominant; Leafly simply says hybrid.
- Ancestry: GMO × Rainbow Belts F1. GMO is Chemdawg × Girl Scout Cookies; Rainbow Belts is Archive's Zkittlez × Moonbow #75.
- Breeder: Archive Seed Bank — credited by Leafly, AllBud's lineage, Weedmaps, GrowDiaries, and the licensed growers who sell it (Canada's Woody Nelson, Ohio's Klutch).
- THC: Leafly 25%; AllBud 24–25%; licensed-grower batches from about 18% to 32%.
- Minor cannabinoids: Leafly lists about 1% CBG; CBD is negligible (GrowDiaries lists 0.1%).
- Aliases: Drw (Leafly's abbreviation), sometimes written "Dark Rainbows."
Why Archive made it: a hash plant
Archive is best known for Do-Si-Dos, Moonbow and Rainbow Belts, and it built Dark Rainbow with water-hash makers in mind — Weedmaps' description says exactly that, noting the nugs are heavily coated in trichomes and that phenotypes vary, some leaning hard toward GMO's terpenes. That's the logic of the cross: GMO brings resin, funk and weight; Rainbow Belts brings the candy terpenes and bag appeal.
Dark Rainbow vs Dark Rainbow 2.0
They're not the same strain. SeedFinder lists Archive's Dark Rainbows 2.0 as GMO × Planet Purple — Planet Purple being Sherbadough × Moonbow #75 — and quotes the breeder calling it a "winning formula for hash makers and chem/gas heavy smokers," with multiple 6%+ hash-yield plants in a 30-plant test run. Mood's write-up notes the 2.0 lacks the original's candy notes. Same GMO father, different candy mother, so if a menu just says "Dark Rainbow," ask which one.
Where the lineage gets confused
The consensus — Leafly, AllBud, Weedmaps, GrowDiaries and growers' own listings — is GMO × Rainbow Belts F1 from Archive. Two outliers disagree: one long-form strain guide on JointCommerce gives GMO × Rainbow Chip and credits Exotic Genetix based on "breeder chatter," and HighThere lists GMO × Rainbow Sherbet. Neither cites the breeder, and both conflict with the people actually selling the seeds and flower. Archive has also used it as a parent: SeedFinder lists a White Runtz × Dark Rainbow #11 cross, which tells you numbered Dark Rainbow cuts exist.
Dark Rainbow Terpene Profile
Every source agrees caryophyllene leads. Leafly and Woody Nelson both list caryophyllene, terpinolene and myrcene, and Woody Nelson reports about 4% total terpenes on its batch — a very loud number. Ohio grower Klutch lists caryophyllene first, then linalool, limonene, humulene, eudesmol and guaiol. Caryophyllene is worth knowing about on its own — a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — pepper, garlic-gas spice, the GMO backbone
Terpinolene — tropical fruit, grapefruit brightness
Myrcene — earthy, heavy body
Limonene — lemon-lime candy lift
Typical relative profile for Dark Rainbow — caryophyllene-led per Leafly and licensed-grower labels. GMO-leaning phenos read funkier; Rainbow Belts-leaning phenos read sweeter and more citrus.
- Caryophyllene: The peppery, spicy core — the part of the GMO funk you taste on the exhale, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Terpinolene: Fruity and tropical; behind Leafly's grapefruit note and the "candied fruit" on top of the funk.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky, and part of why the body effect gets heavy as the session goes on.
- Limonene: The lemon-lime candy brightness from the Rainbow Belts side, and a driver of the giggly, euphoric start.
The garlic isn't one of these terpenes. GMO's savory note comes from volatile sulfur compounds, which is also why Mood warns the garlic can fade with shipping and poor storage — a fresh, well-sealed jar smells far more like Dark Rainbow than an old one.
Appearance
Dark Rainbow lives up to the "dark" half of its name. AllBud describes dense, heart-shaped olive-green nugs with thin amber hairs and milky trichomes; sellers like Beard Bros and Mood describe deep forest green with purple shading and thick orange pistils. Either way, the defining feature is resin — Weedmaps notes the buds are heavily coated in trichomes, which is exactly what Archive bred it for. Expect chunky, compact, sticky flower that needs a grinder.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar and the GMO side hits first: garlic, pepper, fuel and earthy funk — Klutch calls it "heavy GMO funk meets candied fruit and musky sweetness." Mood's description of a fresh batch is the most vivid: "garlic bread mixed with citrus candy." Break a bud and the sweeter Rainbow Belts layer comes forward. Leafly's top flavors are pepper, grapefruit and butter, with chemical, tropical and sweet notes; AllBud describes a sweet-and-sour lemon-lime inhale with a spicy, peppery exhale and hints of sage. Woody Nelson sums it up in two words: citrus and funk. GMO-leaning phenotypes are savory and gassy; Rainbow Belts-leaning phenotypes are noticeably more candy.
Recreational Effects
Dark Rainbow runs in two acts. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.8 rating from 50 reviewers, the top effects are:
- Relaxed: the headline effect — Leafly calls Dark Rainbow mostly calming.
- Euphoric: a fast, happy mood lift up front.
- Giggly: the signature of the first phase — AllBud describes a happy, carefree, laughing onset.
- Sleepy: on AllBud's list, and where higher doses end up.
- Hungry: reviewers and growers both note the munchies.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5 minutes: a quick cerebral lift — giggly, chatty, almost sativa-like.
- 10–30 minutes: the body arrives. Mood describes body effects around 10 minutes and full couch-lock by about 15 at higher doses.
- 1–3 hours: a long, heavy, relaxed plateau, with lingering calm afterward. Most sources put inhaled duration at two to three hours.
Not every batch reads the same. One Leafly reviewer found it heavy and indica-leaning; another described a balanced, sativa-like high, and an AllBud reviewer on concentrate called it energizing and sociable. That spread is the GMO-vs-Rainbow Belts phenotype split showing up in real life. It's best saved for the evening.

How Strong Is the Dark Rainbow Strain?
Dark Rainbow is a high-THC strain, but the published numbers span a wide range:
- Leafly: 25% THC (the description says "more than 25%"), about 1% CBG.
- AllBud: 24–25%.
- Woody Nelson (Canada): 27–32% on its batches.
- Ohio menus: about 22.6–27% per Weedmaps listings; Klutch's averaged lab results ran 18.1–18.7%.
- Mood: its own COA showed 19.97% total THC.
That spread — 18% to 32% for the same name — is why the label matters more than the strain name. The strength people describe is also about the shape of the high: a fast giggly start and a heavy body that keeps building. Is Dark Rainbow the strongest strain? No single strain holds that title; potency varies more by grower and batch than by name. A well-grown Dark Rainbow sits near the top of today's range.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Dark Rainbow batch against the 18–32% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Dark Rainbow vs Similar Strains
- vs GMO: the funky father. GMO is heavier, more savory and more sedating; Dark Rainbow adds candy, citrus and a giggly front end.
- vs Rainbow Belts: the candy mother — sour lime candy, balanced and social. Dark Rainbow trades some of that sweetness for garlic, pepper and a much heavier body.
- vs Garlic Breath: another GMO-family strain; Garlic Breath leans further into savory garlic with less fruit.
- vs Moonbow and Zkittlez: the candy grandparents on the Rainbow Belts side — sweeter, softer and without the gas.
- vs Northern Lights: Mood's comparison — Northern Lights sedates right away; Dark Rainbow gives you a giggly phase first.
- vs Mule Fuel: a GMO Cookies × Lurch cross on our shelf — earthy, gassy and indica-leaning, without the candy. It's our closest match on the GMO funk and evening body.
Who Dark Rainbow Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced consumers who like savory, gassy strains with some fruit; evening sessions, movies and a big meal; hash and rosin fans.
Poor fit: beginners, anyone who needs to be productive afterward, and people who only want sweet fruit — the garlic funk is the point. If you want the candy side without the funk, Straw Gua Mintz is the fruit-forward option on our shelf; if you want the funk and the body, Mule Fuel is the better pick.
How to Use Dark Rainbow THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: a good way to find the candy under the funk. Around 350–380°F brings out the citrus and tropical fruit; 390–410°F brings out the pepper, gas and heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — the body effect keeps building after the giggly start. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (about 33%).
- Pain: about 20% of Leafly reviewers.
- Stress: about 18%, and on AllBud's list alongside low mood.
- Sleep and appetite: the heavy back half and the munchies make it an evening pick for many.
Leafly and AllBud also mention people choosing it for eye pressure and hypertension. Those are reviewer reports, not evidence — talk to a doctor about either.
For a plain-language primer on how terpenes are thought to shape these effects, see Project CBD on terpenes. Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.
Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — Leafly's most-reported negatives.
- Dizziness — also on Leafly's list, usually from taking too much too fast.
- Couch-lock and grogginess — an AllBud reviewer reported strong couch-lock from a small amount.
- Anxiety or racing thoughts — possible at high doses or low tolerance, mostly in the fast first phase.
Is Dark Rainbow good for sleep? For most people, at a normal dose, yes — the second act is heavy. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Dark Rainbow Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask which Dark Rainbow it is. The original GMO × Rainbow Belts and the 2.0 (GMO × Planet Purple) are different plants. A good seller knows.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. With batches ranging from 18% to 32%, the paperwork tells you which one you're getting. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Funk and fruit. Real Dark Rainbow has both garlic-pepper funk and citrus candy. All candy suggests a different strain; all garlic may just be a GMO-leaning pheno.
- Heavy resin. This was bred as a hash plant — the buds should be sticky and frosted inside, not just on top.
- Freshness. The garlic notes are volatile; a flat or hay-like smell means old or poorly cured flower.
Growing Dark Rainbow
Dark Rainbow is a resin-first plant from a breeder that selects for hash. Grow data is thinner than for older classics, but what's published lines up:
- Flowering: about 69 days (roughly 10 weeks) per GrowDiaries; Beard Bros gives 8–10 weeks. GMO-leaning phenos tend to run longer.
- Yield: about 400 g/m² indoors and up to 500 g per plant outdoors, per GrowDiaries.
- Height: medium indoors. Expect a real stretch in the first two weeks of flower and train early.
- Bud rot risk: dense, resin-heavy colas trap moisture — keep airflow and humidity under control in late flower.
- Stress: keep light, water and temperature consistent. A grower thread on THCFarmer about a stressed Dark Rainbow run is a reminder that stressed plants can herm.
- Cure: slow-dry and cure for at least a few weeks to keep the candy and garlic intact; Woody Nelson cures its batches for a minimum of three weeks.
- Seeds: Archive Seed Bank releases; the 2.0 is a separate GMO × Planet Purple line.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dark Rainbow a sativa or indica?
Dark Rainbow is an indica-leaning hybrid. AllBud lists it 80% indica and Weedmaps calls it indica-dominant, while Leafly simply lists it as a hybrid. The start is giggly and almost sativa-like; the finish is heavy and relaxing.
What is Dark Rainbow a cross of?
GMO × Rainbow Belts F1, bred by Archive Seed Bank. GMO is Chemdawg × Girl Scout Cookies; Rainbow Belts is Archive's Zkittlez × Moonbow #75. A few blogs list Rainbow Chip or Rainbow Sherbet instead, but Leafly, AllBud, Weedmaps and licensed growers all list Rainbow Belts.
Who bred Dark Rainbow?
Archive Seed Bank, the Portland, Oregon breeder behind Do-Si-Dos, Moonbow and Rainbow Belts. Weedmaps says it was bred with water-hash makers in mind.
What is the difference between Dark Rainbow and Dark Rainbow 2.0?
The original is GMO × Rainbow Belts F1. Dark Rainbow 2.0 is GMO × Planet Purple (Sherbadough × Moonbow #75), which SeedFinder quotes Archive calling a formula for hash makers and chem/gas smokers. Mood notes the 2.0 lacks the original's candy notes.
How strong is Dark Rainbow?
Leafly lists 25% THC and AllBud 24–25%; licensed-grower batches range from about 18% to 32%. It hits fast and the body keeps building, so start small.
What does Dark Rainbow taste like?
Pepper, garlic funk and fuel over sweet-and-sour lemon-lime candy, grapefruit and tropical fruit. Leafly's top flavors are pepper, grapefruit and butter; Mood describes fresh batches as 'garlic bread mixed with citrus candy.'
What are the effects of Dark Rainbow?
A fast, giggly, euphoric start followed by heavy body relaxation, munchies and, at higher doses, sleep. Leafly's top-reported effects are relaxed, euphoric and giggly.

Caryophyllene leads. Leafly and Woody Nelson add terpinolene and myrcene; Klutch's labels list linalool, limonene, humulene, eudesmol and guaiol as secondary terpenes.
Is Dark Rainbow good for sleep?
Usually, yes. The second half of the high is heavy and sedating, and 'sleepy' is a commonly reported effect. Expect a giggly half hour first.
Is Dark Rainbow good for anxiety?
About 33% of Leafly reviewers say they use it for anxiety, making it the top reported reason. High doses can still cause racing thoughts, so keep the dose low.
Is Rainbow Belts strain strong?
Rainbow Belts — Dark Rainbow's candy parent — is a balanced Zkittlez × Moonbow #75 hybrid known for its sour-candy flavor and its showings in hash and flower competitions. It's more social and less sedating than Dark Rainbow, which gets its heavier body from GMO.
How long does Dark Rainbow take to flower?
About 69 days (roughly 10 weeks) per GrowDiaries, with Beard Bros giving 8–10 weeks. It yields around 400 g/m² indoors.
Where can I buy Dark Rainbow THCA flower online?
