Rainbow Runtz Strain: The Candy Hybrid With Four Family Trees
The Rainbow Runtz strain is a sweet, colorful member of the Runtz family — candy and pear on the nose, a light fuel finish, and a happy, relaxed high that turns sleepy and hungry as you keep going. Most people today mean Wizard Trees' Runtz × RS11, sold as Rainbow RZ. It fits the candy corner of our THCA flower collection.
The catch: "Rainbow Runtz" isn't one plant. Weedmaps counts four different crosses sold under the name, Leafly runs two separate pages that both answer to it, and the potency and flavor you get depend on which one is in the jar. Below: every lineage and who stands behind it, what the high actually feels like, how strong it is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to tell a good bag from a name on a label.
A 360° look at Rainbow Runtz's lime-green, violet-streaked buds.

- Type: Hybrid. Leafly categorizes it as indica but says the modern version's effects are "hybrid"; AllBud and Grower's Choice list it as an even 50/50.
- Most common modern lineage: Runtz × RS11 (Rainbow Sherbet #11), bred by Wizard Trees in Los Angeles — listed on SeedFinder and sold in dispensaries as "Rainbow RZ."
- Most-cited older lineage: a double cross of Zkittlez and Do-Si-Dos, with no confirmed breeder.
- THC: Leafly lists a 25% average; AllBud 21–23%; Grower's Choice claims 27–30% for its seed line.
- CBD: Negligible — no source lists a meaningful amount.
- Aliases: Rainbow Runts, Rainbow RZ, Runtz #69.
Four strains, one name: which Rainbow Runtz is which?
Weedmaps puts it best: Rainbow Runtz is "basically four different strains wearing the same trench coat." Here's each one, with who claims it:
- Wizard Trees — Runtz × RS11 ("Rainbow RZ"). The version Leafly calls the 2024 Rainbow Runtz and the one you're most likely to see on a modern menu. Wizard Trees also popularized RS11, so this is candy crossed with candy-gas. SeedFinder quotes the breeder describing "dark colorful flowers covered in trichomes with contrasting pistils" and a roughly 9-week flower.
- Zkittlez × Do-Si-Dos double cross. Leafly's original description and Weedmaps' "widely cited as the original," but no breeder has ever been confirmed. AllBud lists the same pairing.
- Grower's Choice / Chosen Seeds — Rainbow Candy × Gelato #41. A feminized seed line. Grower's Choice describes Rainbow Candy as Zkittlez × Dosidos × Zkittlez — a Zkittlez/Do-Si-Dos double cross — crossed with Gelato #41. Weedmaps credits the London breeder Chosen Seeds; SeedFinder files it under Grower's Choice.
- Exotic Genetix — Rainbow Chip × Runtz. A feminized line from the Washington breeder, now listed as retired on Exotic Genetix's own site.
Our read: the "Zkittlez × Do-Si-Dos double cross" and Rainbow Candy's Zkittlez × Dosidos × Zkittlez pedigree describe the same combination, so the old claim and the seed line may share a root — but no source confirms that, so treat it as a likely connection, not a fact.
And then there's Rainbow Z
Leafly keeps a second page, Rainbow Z, "aka Rainbow Runtz" — a hybrid it describes as The Original Z × OG Eddy Lepp at around 25% THC, with grape, orange and grapefruit flavors. Leafly notes it was "sold under an infringing candy name," which is why it now goes by Rainbow Z, and that another "Rainbow Z" exists as RS-11 × Z. It's a different plant from Wizard Trees' Rainbow RZ despite the near-identical name. Another page, Leafwell, lists Rainbow Runtz as Original Z × Gelato — which is simply the parentage of Runtz itself; we couldn't confirm it as a separate cultivar.
Rainbow Runtz Terpene Profile
There's no single verified terpene profile for Rainbow Runtz — Leafly lists none, and with four lineages under one name, any single chart is a generalization. What we can say: both Wizard Trees parents are listed on Leafly with caryophyllene as their top terpene, and dispensary write-ups most often name limonene, caryophyllene, linalool and myrcene, with humulene in some descriptions. That fits the floral, lavender-and-candy flavor reviewers report.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — pepper, light fuel, the Runtz/RS11 backbone
Limonene — sweet citrus-candy lift
Linalool — floral, lavender, calm
Myrcene — earthy, relaxed, sleepy body
Estimated relative profile only — built from parent-strain data and dispensary descriptions, not a published Rainbow Runtz lab test. Check the COA for any specific batch.
- Caryophyllene: Peppery and faintly fuel-edged — the "pungent fuel back" Leafly describes — and the one common terpene known to bind CB2 receptors.
- Limonene: The bright citrus-candy top note most sources name first, and a likely driver of the happy onset.
- Linalool: Floral and lavender-like — AllBud reviewers single out a "spicy lavender" note, and linalool is Zkittlez's signature terpene.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky; it fits the heavier, sleepier back half of the high Leafly reviewers report.
The pear and rose aren't one terpene — they're the combined chemistry of a candy-bred plant, and they vary by lineage.
Appearance
Rainbow Runtz earns the name on bag appeal. Expect dense, chunky buds in lime to dark olive green, often streaked with violet and purple, threaded with bright orange pistils and caked in trichomes. AllBud describes "heart-shaped dark olive green nugs with deep purple undertones, vibrant red-orange hairs"; Grower's Choice says some plants throw pink and violet hues late in flower. How purple a batch gets depends on the lineage and on cool night temperatures late in the grow.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar and the first hit is candy — sweet fruit, then a distinct pear, then flowers and rose. Leafly's displayed flavors are pear, rose and flowery, and its most-voted notes add earthy, sweet, berry, citrus, pungent and pine. AllBud reviewers describe pear up front with apricot and "spicy lavender." Weedmaps sums it up as "a floral, fruity aroma with notes of pear and rose layered over an earthy, herbal base." On the exhale, the RS11 side shows up as a light fuel — Leafly calls it "a candy front with a pungent fuel back."
Recreational Effects
Rainbow Runtz opens with a happy, euphoric lift and settles into a relaxed body — and it gets heavier the more you smoke. On Leafly, with about 130 reviews, the most-voted effects are:
- Relaxed: by far the top effect — nearly twice as many votes as anything else.
- Happy and euphoric: the mood lift that arrives first.
- Sleepy: the back half of the high, especially at larger doses.
- Hungry: a strong munchies strain — one of its most-reported effects.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a happy, giggly head change and a loosening in the shoulders.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — relaxed, content, sociable, with a mild tingle. Low doses stay functional enough for hobbies or a movie.
- 1–3 hours: the body gets heavier, the appetite kicks in, and at higher doses you drift toward sleep.
Leafly calls the modern version good for "daytime and afternoon smoking"; dose decides whether it stays there.

Rainbow Runtz's violet-streaked, orange-haired buds break down easily for a joint.

How Strong Is Rainbow Runtz?
Strong, but not a record-setter. Most sources put it in the 20s:
- Leafly: 25% THC average (Rainbow Z: also around 25%).
- AllBud: 21–23%.
- Grower's Choice: 27–30% for its Rainbow Candy × Gelato #41 seed line.
Both Wizard Trees parents are heavy hitters — our RS11 guide covers why RS11 regularly tests in the mid-to-high 20s — so a well-grown Rainbow RZ is a serious strain for low-tolerance users. With four lineages behind the name, batch matters more than label.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Rainbow Runtz batch against the 21–30% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Rainbow Runtz vs Similar Strains
- vs Runtz: the parent. Runtz is the brighter, more balanced candy hybrid; Rainbow Runtz is more floral and pear-forward, with a heavier, sleepier finish.
- vs RS11: the other Wizard Trees parent — guava, sherbet and OG gas. Rainbow Runtz keeps a little of that fuel but leans sweeter and more relaxing.
- vs White Runtz, Pink Runtz and Black Runtz: the rest of the Runtz family. White Runtz is the frostiest and most balanced, Pink Runtz the most candy-sweet, Black Runtz the darkest and heaviest. Rainbow Runtz sits between Pink and Black.
- vs Zkittlez: the grandparent in most lineages — fruit candy with a calm, functional high. Rainbow Runtz is stronger and more sedating.
- vs Rainbow Belts: a different "rainbow" candy strain — Archive's Zkittlez × Moonbow #75. Sour lime and berry, and more social than sleepy.
- vs Cosmic Runtz: another Runtz-family cut with an indica lean — the same sweet-candy, relaxed-body lane. It's the closest match on our shelf.
Who Rainbow Runtz Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: candy and fruit-flavor lovers; afternoon-into-evening sessions; anyone who wants a happy, relaxed high that can tip into sleep; people who need help finding an appetite.
Poor fit: anyone who needs sharp focus for work, or low-tolerance users taking big hits — the sleepy side sneaks up. For a lighter, more daytime-friendly fruit profile, Straw Gua Mintz is the brighter option on our shelf.
How to Use Rainbow Runtz THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the pear and floral notes. Around 350–380°F keeps the candy and flowers up front; 390–410°F brings out the fuel and a heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — this is a 25%-average strain. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full happy-to-relaxed arc; more than that and it turns sleepy. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason in Leafly reviews (about 24%) — though "anxious" also shows up among its negatives, so dose matters.
- Stress: about 19% of reviewers, in line with its top "relaxed" effect.
- Low mood: about 16%, consistent with the happy, euphoric onset.
- Sleep and appetite: "sleepy" and "hungry" are among its most-voted effects, and some reviewers use it for exactly that.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — by far the most common complaints on Leafly.
- Anxiety — reported by a small share of reviewers, usually at high doses.
- Dizziness or paranoia — occasionally reported, typically from overdoing it.
Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Rainbow Runtz Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Ask which Rainbow Runtz. A good seller knows whether it's Wizard Trees' Runtz × RS11, a seed line (Grower's Choice or Exotic Genetix) or something else. "It's just Rainbow Runtz" is a yellow flag.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Candy and flowers. A real Rainbow Runtz smells sweet and floral, with pear or rose; flat, grassy or purely earthy flower is either a different cut or a bad cure.
- Color and frost — dense buds, violet streaks or purple undertones, orange hairs, and trichomes inside the bud, not just on top. Purple alone isn't proof of quality.
- A proper cure — hay or grass smell means it was rushed.
Growing Rainbow Runtz
Rainbow Runtz is a moderate grow with heavy, resinous flowers. Numbers depend on which version you plant:
- Flowering: about 8–10 weeks indoors — SeedFinder lists roughly 9 weeks (63 days) for the Wizard Trees version; Grower's Choice lists about 10 weeks for its seed line.
- Yield: Weedmaps lists 450–650 g/m² indoors and 14–20 oz per plant outdoors; Grower's Choice 550–650 g/m². Exotic Genetix rates its version "heavy."
- Height: 3–5 ft indoors and 5–7 ft outdoors per Weedmaps; Grower's Choice 80–120 cm indoors and 150–220 cm outdoors.
- Outdoors: harvest from October in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Seeds: feminized lines exist from Wizard Trees, Grower's Choice and Exotic Genetix (retired).

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rainbow Runtz indica or sativa?
Rainbow Runtz is a hybrid. Leafly files it under indica but describes the modern version's effects as hybrid; AllBud and Grower's Choice list it as 50/50. Its most-reported effects — relaxed, happy, sleepy, hungry — lean indica, especially at higher doses.
What is Rainbow Runtz a cross of?
It depends on the version. The most common modern cut is Wizard Trees' Runtz × RS11 (sold as Rainbow RZ). Other lineages sold under the name include a Zkittlez × Do-Si-Dos double cross with no confirmed breeder, Grower's Choice's Rainbow Candy × Gelato #41 and Exotic Genetix's Rainbow Chip × Runtz.
Who bred Rainbow Runtz?
No single breeder. Wizard Trees in Los Angeles bred the Runtz × RS11 version; Grower's Choice (credited to Chosen Seeds by Weedmaps) and Exotic Genetix released seed lines. The breeder of the original Zkittlez × Do-Si-Dos version has never been confirmed.
Is Rainbow Runtz the same as Rainbow RZ?
Usually. Rainbow RZ is the name Wizard Trees' Runtz × RS11 is sold under, and Weedmaps treats the two as the same strain. It's the version Leafly calls the 2024 Rainbow Runtz.
Is Rainbow Runtz the same as Rainbow Z?
No. Leafly lists Rainbow Z (aka Rainbow Runtz) as a separate hybrid — The Original Z × OG Eddy Lepp — with grape, orange and grapefruit flavors. It was renamed because it had been sold under an infringing candy name.
How strong is Rainbow Runtz?
Leafly lists a 25% THC average, AllBud 21–23%, and Grower's Choice 27–30% for its seed line. It's potent enough that newer users should start with one small puff.
What does Rainbow Runtz taste like?
Candy first, then pear, rose and flowers, with berry and citrus and a light pungent fuel on the exhale. Leafly sums it up as 'a candy front with a pungent fuel back.'
Is Rainbow Runtz good for sleep?
It can be. 'Sleepy' is one of its most-voted effects on Leafly, and the high gets heavier as the dose goes up. Low doses stay relaxed and social rather than sedating.
Is Rainbow Runtz good for anxiety?
About 24% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety — the most-cited reason — but a small share also report feeling anxious. Keep the dose low.
Is Rainbow Runtz good for beginners?
With care. It's relaxing rather than racy, which helps, but it averages around 25% THC. Take one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes.
How long does Rainbow Runtz take to flower?
About 8–10 weeks indoors — roughly 9 weeks for the Wizard Trees version per SeedFinder, around 10 for the Grower's Choice seed line — with outdoor harvests from October.
Where can I buy Rainbow Runtz THCA flower online?
Rainbow Runtz isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. The closest match is Cosmic Runtz THCA Flower — a Runtz-family, indica-leaning cut with the same candy-sweet profile and relaxed body, ½oz (14g) for $69, third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75.
