E85 Strain

E85 Strain: The Rare Dessert Hybrid Named After Race Fuel

The E85 strain is a rare, high-potency hybrid from Grandiflora Genetics in Oakland, released in partnership with Cookies. Its name borrows from E85 — the high-ethanol fuel blend — but the jar leans dessert more than diesel: apricot, citrus, honey and vanilla, with a light fuel edge behind it. Leafly lists it at 30% THC, and reviewers describe a euphoric, tingly lift that melts into heavy relaxation. It's the kind of top-shelf, dessert-and-gas profile you'll find in our THCA flower collection.

E85 is also one of the hardest strains to pin down. It was never sold as seeds, it circulates as expensive clones, and the databases disagree on its parents: Leafly and SeedFinder list Wedding Cake × Project 4516, while AllBud, Lightshade and Weedmaps point to Lemon Cherry Gelato × Runtz. Below: both lineage stories and what each would mean, what the name means, the terpenes, how the high unfolds, how strong it really is, how to use it, how it grows, and how to judge a bag.

A 360° look at E85's frosty buds.

Quick Facts

In short: Grandiflora Genetics' rare, clone-only hybrid — apricot, citrus and vanilla sweetness with a fuel edge, a euphoric, tingly lift that settles into heavy relaxation, and high-20s-to-30% THC.

E85 Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Hybrid. AllBud lists it 50% sativa / 50% indica; Lightshade says it "perfectly balances effects from both sides." Leafly's reviewers call the effects "mostly calming."
  • Breeder: Grandiflora Genetics of Oakland, California — credited by Leafly, Weedmaps and SeedFinder, which notes it was commercialized under the Cookies brand.
  • Ancestry: disputed — see below. Weedmaps notes the origins "are not confirmed by the breeder."
  • THC: Leafly lists 30%; AllBud 28–29%; SeedFinder cites batches around 26% THC with about 2.5% terpenes.
  • CBD: Negligible.
  • Aliases: E-85 and Ethanol (per Weedmaps).
  • Availability: SeedFinder says E85 "seemingly never" existed in seed form; it moves as clones, reportedly up to $350 per cut. Colorado dispensary chain Lightshade lists it as "not in production."

Lineage theory #1: Wedding Cake × Project 4516

This is the pairing on Leafly and in SeedFinder's lineage tree, where Project 4516 is marked "probably." Wedding Cake is Seed Junky Genetics' Triangle Kush × Animal Mints — a vanilla-dough, peppery, heavy-hitting dessert strain. Project 4516 is listed as probably Gelato #45 × (Platinum OG × Grateful Puff). That combination explains E85's cake-and-vanilla sweetness, its caryophyllene backbone and its heavy body finish.

Lineage theory #2: Lemon Cherry Gelato × Runtz

AllBud lists Super Lemon Cherry Gelato × Runtz; Lightshade says "those in the know" suggest the same; Weedmaps calls it the general assumption; SeedFinder lists Lemon Cherry Gelato × Runtz from "some sources." This version would explain the apricot, citrus and cherry-pie fruit — Lemon Cherry Gelato's Sunset Sherbet and GSC roots, plus Runtz's Gelato and Zkittlez candy.

Our read: both stories describe a modern Gelato-family dessert hybrid with high potency, and the two databases that show a lineage tree side with Wedding Cake × Project 4516. Until Grandiflora confirms it, treat the parents as unverified — and judge any jar by its nose and COA rather than its pedigree claim.

What does E85 mean?

E85 is a fuel blend of up to 85% ethanol. The strain name nods to high-octane potency and the light gas note in its nose; Weedmaps even lists "Ethanol" as an alias. It has nothing to do with the strain's percentages — E85 doesn't mean 85% of anything in the flower.

Offspring

SeedFinder records 18 direct descendants, many from Lit Farms (Baked Alaska, Candi Gas, Formula 1, Gaslight) and Grandiflora's own Grandi Candi and E85 × Doggy Bag. Leafly lists Grand Prix and Yah-y as children.

E85 Terpene Profile

Leafly lists E85's dominant terpene as "unknown," so the best data comes from elsewhere. SeedFinder names caryophyllene, humulene, limonene and pinene; Lightshade lists caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene. Caryophyllene is the common lead. Total terpenes run high — SeedFinder cites batches around 2.5%, and one AllBud reviewer reported a 3.9% batch.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, the dessert-gas backbone

Limonene — citrus, apricot brightness

Humulene — woody, earthy depth

Myrcene — earthy, heavy body

Typical relative profile for E85 — caryophyllene-led per SeedFinder and Lightshade. Leafly lists no dominant terpene, and batches vary.

  • Caryophyllene: Peppery and warm; it anchors the sweetness and adds the faint fuel spice. A 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.
  • Limonene: The lemon and apricot top note and a driver of the euphoric start.
  • Humulene: Woody and earthy, the same terpene that gives hops their bite; it keeps the dessert from turning cloying.
  • Myrcene: Earthy and musky; it deepens the heavy body finish.

The vanilla and cream notes aren't a single terpene — they're the Gelato and cake chemistry that runs through both lineage theories.

Appearance

AllBud describes dense, rounded olive-green nugs with thin red-orange hairs, dark leaves and a frosty coat of small, amber-tinted trichomes. Weedmaps adds dark green buds with heavy trichome coverage, and SeedFinder notes dense, golden-hued buds. Not every cut matches: one Leafly reviewer described spindly, elongated, almost-white buds that looked sativa-like — another sign that more than one "E85" is out there.

Aroma and Flavor

E85 smells sweeter than the name suggests. Leafly's reviewers list apricot, honey and citrus; AllBud adds creamy vanilla, nutty and sour notes and a "vanilla cookie" aroma; Lightshade describes cherry blossoms, ripe peaches and a buttery, sweet-and-sour cherry-pie flavor. The fuel shows up as an undertone: Weedmaps users report lemon (36%), earthy (36%) and diesel (27%), and Leafly reviewers call some batches "super gassy." Expect fruit and dessert first, then a light gas and pepper finish.

Recreational Effects

Leafly's reviewers (73 reviews, averaging 4.6 stars) most often report euphoric, relaxed and tingly, with "happy" close behind. Lightshade sums up the arc: it starts like a sativa — euphoric, blissful, giggly — then settles into a calm, meditative, indica-like state.

  • Euphoric: the headline effect, a fast mood lift.
  • Tingly: AllBud describes a physical tingle that comes on first.
  • Happy and social: Lightshade calls it a strong conversation strain.
  • Relaxed and heavy: the body calm builds steadily and can turn into couch-lock at higher doses.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First few minutes: a quick euphoric lift and a body tingle — Weedmaps notes it acts quickly.
  • 15–60 minutes: the peak — happy, giggly and talkative, with the body getting heavier.
  • 1–3 hours: the slide into deep relaxation. At high doses, plan on staying put.

Because it's potent and fast, the easiest mistake is a third hit before the second one lands.

How Strong Is E85?

E85 is a genuine heavy hitter. Leafly lists it at 30% THC and recommends it for "experienced cannabis consumers." By source:

  • Leafly: 30% THC; product listings on the page range from 18% to 30%.
  • AllBud: 28–29%.
  • SeedFinder: batches around 26% THC with about 2.5% terpenes.
  • Weedmaps: a dispensary listing at 27.7% THC.
  • Lightshade: estimates "as high as 30%."

So expect the high 20s, with standout batches near 30%. Potency still varies more between growers and batches than between strain names — and with several different cuts sold as E85, the COA matters more than the label.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a E85 batch against the 26–30% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

E85 vs Similar Strains

  • vs Permanent Marker: another high-potency, Gelato-family dessert-gas hybrid, bred at Seed Junky — the same program behind Wedding Cake. It's louder and more chemical than E85, with the same euphoric-then-heavy arc. It's the closest match on our shelf.
  • vs Wedding Cake: the possible parent. Wedding Cake is more vanilla-dough and pepper; E85 is fruitier.
  • vs Lemon Cherry Gelato: the other possible parent line, and a Lightshade pick for strains like E85 — the same fruit-forward sweetness and mind-and-body buzz. It's on our shelf too.
  • vs Runtz: candy-sweet and more balanced. E85 is stronger and heavier.
  • vs Gelato Cake: creamy, sweet and relaxing — named as a similar strain by both Weedmaps and Lightshade.
  • vs Grease Monkey: one Leafly reviewer compared E85's gassy batches to it. Grease Monkey is gassier and more sedating.

Who E85 Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: experienced smokers who want a potent, flavorful evening strain; social sessions that end on the couch; fans of fruity dessert profiles with a gas edge.

Poor fit: beginners, anyone prone to THC anxiety, or daytime use when you need to stay sharp. For something lighter and brighter, Straw Gua Mintz is the easier option on our shelf.

How to Use E85 THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the apricot and vanilla. Around 350–380°F keeps the limonene sweetness; 390–410°F brings out the caryophyllene spice and the heavier body.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — this is a 30%-class strain. Regular users usually find two or three hits delivers the full arc. Save bigger sessions for the evening. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Anxiety: the top reason on Leafly — about 31% of reviewers — though "anxious" is also its top negative, so dose matters.
  • Stress: about 25% of Leafly reviewers.
  • Low mood: about 22% of Leafly reviewers cite depression symptoms.
  • Aches and cramps: AllBud lists chronic pain, cramps and muscle spasms among reported uses; Leafly's description mentions pain.

For a plain-language primer on how terpenes are thought to shape these effects, see Project CBD on terpenes. Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Anxiety and paranoia — both among Leafly's top negatives, and SeedFinder lists them too. This is a potent strain; go slowly.
  • Dry mouth — the most common physical complaint.
  • Dizziness — noted by SeedFinder, usually from overdoing it.
  • Couch-lock — the heavy body finish can make the rest of the night a write-off.

Is E85 good for sleep? It isn't a classic sleep strain, but its heavy, relaxed finish makes it an easy evening pick. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is E85 Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask where the cut came from. E85 is clone-only and widely copied. A seller who can trace it to Grandiflora or Cookies is a better bet than a generic "E85."
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC — and ideally total terpenes, since E85's reputation rests on 2.5%+ terps. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Fruit first, gas second. Apricot, citrus and vanilla with a light fuel finish. Pure diesel with no fruit suggests a different cut.
  • Density and frost — rounded, dense nugs heavy with trichomes.
  • A proper cure — hay or grass smell means it was rushed, and the delicate apricot notes go first.

Growing E85

E85 is hard to grow simply because it's hard to get: SeedFinder says it "seemingly never" existed as seeds, and clones reportedly sell for up to $350. What growers report:

  • Vigor: SeedFinder describes vigorous plants that stretch notably in bloom — top or train early.
  • Flowering: not documented by the breeder; SeedFinder lists flowering time and yield as unknown. One guide estimates 8–9 weeks indoors, typical for Gelato-family hybrids.
  • Buds: dense and resinous, so airflow and humidity control in late flower matter.
  • Seeds: no official seeds. Crosses like E85 × Doggy Bag (Grandiflora) and E85 × Zkittlez (Tramuntana Seeds) exist.

Is E85 THCA Flower Legal?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is E85 a sativa or indica?

E85 is a hybrid — AllBud lists it 50/50. It starts sativa-like (euphoric, giggly) and finishes indica-like (heavy, relaxed); Leafly's reviewers call the effects mostly calming.

Is the Ethanol strain a sativa or indica?

Ethanol is an alias for E85 on Weedmaps, so it's the same balanced hybrid: a euphoric start and a heavy, relaxed finish.

What does E85 mean?

E85 is a fuel blend of up to 85% ethanol. The strain name nods to its high-octane potency and light gas note — it doesn't refer to any percentage in the flower.

What is E85 a cross of?

It's disputed. Leafly and SeedFinder list Wedding Cake × Project 4516; AllBud, Lightshade and Weedmaps point to (Super) Lemon Cherry Gelato × Runtz. The breeder, Grandiflora Genetics, hasn't confirmed either.

Who bred E85?

Grandiflora Genetics of Oakland, California, and it was commercialized under the Cookies brand, according to SeedFinder and Weedmaps.

How strong is E85?

Very. Leafly lists 30% THC and AllBud 28–29%; SeedFinder cites batches around 26%. It's best for experienced consumers.

What does E85 taste like?

Apricot, citrus and honey up front, with creamy vanilla and a light gas and pepper finish. Lightshade compares it to buttery cherry pie.

Is E85 good for anxiety?

It's mixed. About 31% of Leafly reviewers say it helps with anxiety, but 'anxious' and 'paranoid' are its top negatives. Low doses are the safer approach.

Is E85 good for beginners?

No — it's a 30%-class strain. If you try it, take one small puff and wait 15–30 minutes.

Why is E85 so hard to find?

It was never released as seeds and circulates as clones, reportedly up to $350 a cut. Weedmaps notes it drops in small batches that sell out fast, and Colorado's Lightshade lists it as not in production.

Where can I buy E85 THCA flower online?
