God's Gift Strain

God's Gift Strain: Grape, Hash and a Heavy Night

The God's Gift strain is a classic California indica made by crossing Granddaddy Purple with OG Kush. It took the purple, grape-scented body of its mother and the earthy, hash-and-citrus backbone of its father, and the result is a strain people reach for at the end of the day. Leafly sums up the effects as "dreamy, blissful," and its reviewers mostly agree — sleepy, relaxed and tingly is the consensus. For heavy, evening-lane flower right now, start with our THCA flower collection.

It's also a strain with more questions than answers. Nobody we found can name who made it. Potency figures range from 16% to 27% depending on which database you trust. And the flavor seems to change between the jar and the exhale. Below: what the sources actually say about the genetics, the terpenes, how the high unfolds, how strong it really is, its offspring, how it compares to its parents, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

A 360° look at God's Gift's frosty buds.

God's Gift Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica. Leafly and NuggMD both list it as an indica; AllBud calls it an indica-dominant hybrid at 90% indica / 10% sativa. One seed version on SeedFinder, from B.C. Bud Depot, lists 80/20.
  • Parents: Granddaddy Purple × OG Kush. Leafly, AllBud, NuggMD and Culture Magazine all agree. SeedFinder lists the Virgin Seeds version as OG Kush × Granddaddy Purple, with the GDP side marked "probably."
  • Breeder: unknown. None of the major databases name one. A JointCommerce guide says growers in the San Fernando Valley and Bay Area are "often credited" with stabilizing the cut, but it cites nothing.
  • THC: 16% on Leafly, 18% on NuggMD (which says it can reach 22%), and 27% on AllBud.
  • CBD: 0% on Leafly; AllBud lists 1%.
  • Aliases: Leafly lists "God" as another name. You'll also see it written as "Gods Gift" or "God Gift" on menus.

Where the parents come from

  • Granddaddy Purple — the Bay Area purple indica popularized by Ken Estes, and a descendant of Purple Urkle. It's where God's Gift gets its grape and berry nose, its purple potential and much of its sleepy body weight.
  • OG Kush — the Southern California backbone of half the modern menu. OG brings the earth, pine, hash and lemon-fuel notes, plus a sharper, faster head change than a pure grape indica.

Put together, it's a very West Coast pairing: the Bay's favorite purple meets LA's favorite kush.

Who made God's Gift? The honest answer

Leafly and NuggMD say only that God's Gift became popular in California dispensaries around 2005 — the medical-market era, when many cuts traveled clone-to-clone with no breeder attached. SeedFinder muddies things further: it lists more than one "God's Gift." The Virgin Seeds version is described as "Granddaddy purple x Og very sweet tasting." B.C. Bud Depot's version lists its parents as unknown, with a "Deep Grape Taste," an 80/20 indica ratio and a 56–63 day flower. Whether that's the same plant, a selection from it or a different cross under the same name, no source says. If you buy seeds, know that "God's Gift" on a seed pack doesn't guarantee the dispensary cut.

God's Gift offspring

Leafly lists two children: Bubba's Gift and Maui Bubble Gift. SeedFinder's Bubba's Gift entry describes the Humboldt Seed Organisation version: Pre-98 Bubba Kush crossed into God's Gift in 2007, finishing in about 45–50 days with deep purple hues by week six and a piña colada, tropical-fruit flavor — and, interestingly, effects HSO calls "mild for an indica" and functional enough for daytime. We couldn't find the other parent of Maui Bubble Gift.

God's Gift Terpene Profile

Leafly lists limonene as the most abundant terpene in God's Gift, followed by caryophyllene and myrcene. NuggMD names a slightly different trio — myrcene, caryophyllene and pinene. Neither publishes percentages. The JointCommerce guides give ranges (myrcene up to about 0.8%, caryophyllene up to 0.5%) attributed to unnamed "dispensary COAs," so treat those numbers as illustrative, not measured. Caryophyllene is the one with real research interest: a 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Limonene — citrus, lemon peel, the bright top note

Caryophyllene — pepper, spice, hash

Myrcene — earthy, herbal, heavy body

Pinene — pine, fresh forest

Estimated relative profile for God's Gift — order from Leafly (limonene, caryophyllene, myrcene) with pinene from NuggMD. No source publishes measured percentages, so bar lengths are estimates.

  • Limonene: The lemon and fresh-citrus note AllBud describes on top of the grape — most likely an inheritance from OG Kush.
  • Caryophyllene: Pepper, spice and the hashy depth on the exhale. It's the "spicy" in AllBud's aroma tags.
  • Myrcene: Earthy, herbal and musky — the terpene most often associated with heavy, couch-lock indicas, and a good fit for God's Gift's sleepy reputation.
  • Pinene: A fresh pine edge listed by NuggMD, again pointing back to the OG side.

Notice what's missing: no terpene is "grape." The grape and berry character people describe in Granddaddy Purple descendants comes from the whole blend — sweet esters and terpenes together — which is why it reads loudest when the flower is fresh and the cure is slow.

Appearance

God's Gift grows dense, chunky indica buds. AllBud describes them as thickly covered in white crystals. Culture Magazine adds lime-green leaves with dark orange hairs and faint purple, and JointCommerce describes deep purple and violet tones that come out when nights run cool, with orange-to-copper pistils. The purple isn't guaranteed — it depends on the phenotype and on the temperature late in flower — but when it shows, God's Gift looks like what it is: a Granddaddy Purple kid with a heavy OG frost.

Aroma and Flavor

Open the jar and grape comes first — sweet, berry-like and a little candied — with a lemony citrus lift and an earthy, spicy base. AllBud's aroma tags read earthy, grape, spicy and sweet, and it describes the flavor as Granddaddy Purple with lemon and fresh citrus notes. Leafly's description says grape, citrus and hash; its flavor tags read earthy, grape and woody.

Here's the twist. Culture Magazine notes that the smell is mostly sweet grape with some musty earth, but the taste flips it: earth dominates on the exhale and the grape sits behind. That matches the reviews — one Leafly reviewer admits it "didn't taste amazing," adding that "we're not reviewing for taste on this one." If flavor is your priority, a vaporizer at low temperature gives the grape its best shot.

Recreational Effects

God's Gift is a nighttime strain for most people. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.4 rating from 1,386 ratings, the most-reported effects are:

  • Sleepy: the headline effect. One reviewer calls it "a true in-da-couch indica," and another said they could nap after it — "which was the intended result."
  • Relaxed: a heavy, full-body calm that settles in fast.
  • Tingly: reviewers describe "a really nice tingling sensation through the limbs."
  • Euphoric and happy: AllBud and NuggMD both list euphoria, and Leafly calls the overall feel "dreamy, blissful."
  • Head pressure: one reviewer says the high "hit's you right behind the eyes" and calls it "fairly incapacitating."

Not everyone gets the couch. One Leafly reviewer found it "surprisingly functional and not sleepy," and others mention being talkative and giggly at low doses. Dose seems to decide which God's Gift you get.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First few minutes: pressure behind the eyes and a quick mood lift.
  • 15–60 minutes: the peak — tingly limbs, a heavy body and a dreamy, quiet head.
  • 1–3 hours: a long slide into drowsiness. Culture Magazine's advice is simple: don't smoke it if you plan to go out.

How Strong Is God's Gift?

God's Gift is potent in feel more than in record-setting numbers — and the published figures are all over the place:

  • Leafly: 16% THC, 0% CBD, which it still calls "higher THC than average."
  • NuggMD: 18% THC, and up to 22%.
  • AllBud: 27% THC, 1% CBD.
  • JointCommerce: 18–24%, with no lab or batch named.

Realistically, a good modern cut lands somewhere in the high teens to low 20s. The reason people call it strong is the effect profile — the myrcene-heavy, sedating body — not a headline number. NuggMD suggests one to three puffs and says beginners may want to steer clear.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of God's Gift against the 16–27% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Is God's Gift Purple?

Sometimes. Granddaddy Purple carries strong anthocyanin genetics, and God's Gift can express them — JointCommerce describes deep purple and violet tones under cool nights, and its own child Bubba's Gift is described as turning deep purple by week six. But AllBud's write-up describes white-crystal-covered buds and Culture Magazine mentions only faint purple. Color depends on the phenotype and the grow room, not the potency. A green God's Gift isn't a fake, and a purple one isn't automatically better.

God's Gift vs Similar Strains

  • vs Granddaddy Purple: the mother. GDP is the sweeter, grapier and more reliably purple of the two; God's Gift adds citrus, hash and a sharper head change from the OG side.
  • vs OG Kush: the father. OG Kush is lemon, pine and fuel with a more cerebral push; God's Gift trades much of that for grape and a heavier, sleepier body.
  • vs Grape Ape: the other famous grape indica. Both are sweet, purple-leaning and relaxing; Grape Ape is the more candy-grape of the two, God's Gift the earthier.
  • vs Purple Kush: an all-indica kush with earthy grape notes. Similar evening lane, but God's Gift brings more citrus on top.
  • vs Bubba Kush: the hashy couch classic used to make Bubba's Gift. Bubba is heavier on earth and dark hash; God's Gift is fruitier.
  • vs Mule Fuel: our featured in-stock pick, and honestly not a twin. Both are heavy, indica-leaning, end-of-day flowers, but Mule Fuel runs earthy gas and pepper instead of grape and citrus. Want a concentrate? Our HBIC live rosin is the solventless option on our shelf.

Who God's Gift Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: evening smokers, people who want help winding down after work, fans of grape and purple indicas, and anyone who likes a strong body high with a dreamy head.

Poor fit: daytime users, anyone who needs to drive or go out afterward, and brand-new smokers — NuggMD flags it as one beginners may want to skip. For a heavy, end-of-day flower on our shelf, Mule Fuel is the pick, from $59.

How to Use God's Gift THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the grape before the earth takes over. Around 350–380°F keeps the fruit and citrus bright; 390–410°F brings out the pepper and hash and hits heavier.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15–30 minutes — this one sneaks up. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full sleepy arc, in line with NuggMD's one-to-three-puff suggestion. Take it an hour or so before bed, not right before an errand. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly, AllBud and NuggMD, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: the top reason on Leafly, cited by about 39% of reviewers.
  • Anxiety: about 34% of Leafly reviewers. Culture Magazine says patients report feeling calmer — though NuggMD lists paranoia as a possible negative, so dose matters.
  • Pain: about 29% of Leafly reviewers; AllBud lists chronic pain, headaches and migraines.
  • Sleep: AllBud and Culture Magazine both list insomnia, which fits the sleepy headline effect.
  • Appetite: AllBud says it may help with appetite, and Leafly reviewers report getting hungry.

If you take prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor before using any cannabis product.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly.
  • Dizziness — Leafly's third-most-reported negative, more likely at high doses or when standing up fast.
  • Paranoia — listed by NuggMD, though one Leafly reviewer specifically noted "Not paranoid, which is nice."
  • Heavy sedation — the point for some, a problem for others. Plan your evening around it.

Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication — especially anything sedating — are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is God's Gift Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask about the cut. With no known breeder and more than one seed line using the name, a seller who can tell you where their God's Gift came from is worth more than a pretty label.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Treat 30%+ claims without paperwork as marketing. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Grape and earth. Real God's Gift should smell like sweet grape and berry with citrus and a spicy, earthy base. Flat hay or pure earth with no fruit means old or mislabeled flower.
  • Dense, frosty buds. This is a chunky indica — airy, larfy nugs are a red flag. Purple is a bonus, not a requirement.
  • A proper cure — slightly springy, never crunchy-dry or damp.

Growing God's Gift

God's Gift grows like the indica it is — compact, bushy and hungry.

  • Flowering: 8–9 weeks per Leafly's description (its grow section says 7–9); SeedFinder lists 56–63 days for the B.C. Bud Depot seed version.
  • Yield: about 450–550 g/m² indoors, per Leafly.
  • Training: Leafly says it responds well to topping. Top early and spread the canopy so the dense colas get light and airflow.
  • Feeding: a medium-to-heavy feeder, per Leafly.
  • For purple: growers chasing color drop night temperatures in the last weeks of flower — JointCommerce suggests nights in the 15–18°C (59–64°F) range.
  • Watch for mold: dense indica buds hold moisture, so keep humidity down late in flower.
