Lantz Strain: Humboldt's Emerald Cup Candy Hybrid
The Lantz strain — often sold as Ridgeline Lantz — is a cross of Green Lantern and Ridgeline Runtz bred by Jason Gellman of Ridgeline Farms in Southern Humboldt, California, with his father. It took first place in the Mixed Light Flower category at the 2023 Emerald Cup and won the Breeder's Cup the same year. It smells like sweet candy and grape over fuel and pine, starts heady and focused, and settles into a relaxed body. In our THCA flower collection it sits in the candy-fruit corner next to the Runtz family.
Lantz is newer and better documented than most viral strains — the breeder has talked about it on the record — but the databases still disagree on its lean, its potency and even its flavor. Below: the real origin story, where the sources conflict, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how it grows, and how to judge a bag.
A 360° look at Lantz's frosty buds.

- Type: Hybrid. Leafly calls it mostly energizing; AllBud and Weedmaps list it as an even 50/50 split; GrowDiaries tags it indica. Reported effects run heady first, then relaxed.
- Ancestry: Green Lantern × Ridgeline Runtz. Both parents are Ridgeline Farms Emerald Cup winners — Green Lantern in 2018, Ridgeline Runtz in 2019.
- Breeder: Jason Gellman, founder of Ridgeline Farms, a second-generation farm in Southern Humboldt, in California's Emerald Triangle.
- THC: Leafly lists 25%; GrowDiaries 22% (with a 17–25% range); AllBud 30–31%.
- CBD: Negligible — GrowDiaries lists about 0.1%.
- Aliases: Ridgeline Lantz, Lntz. Platinum Lantz is a separately listed strain, not the same plant.
The origin story
In a High Times profile of Ridgeline Farms, Gellman explains that Lantz was a four-year project: he kept crossing his own genetics, carrying the best plants of each generation forward, and took one plant out of a final group of six to the Emerald Cup. "The one I picked out of the six was just a phenomenal plant," he said. He also bred it with his father — the reason he calls the Breeder's Cup win the one that "truly means the most." Gellman estimates that Ice Cream Cake, which he has bred with over the years, accounts for about 10% of Lantz's traits.
The same year it won the Emerald Cup, Lantz placed third for Best Tasting at the 2023 Zalympix. Ridgeline grows in mixed-light greenhouses and light-deprivation houses in the redwood hills above the Lost Coast, and its genetics now reach dispensary shelves in more than 20 states through partners such as Cookies and Heavy Hitters — which is why you'll see "Cookies Ridgeline Lantz" and "Heavy Hitters Ridgeline Lantz" on menus.
Where the lineage gets fuzzy
The cross itself is consistent across the breeder's interviews, Leafly, Cookies and AllBud. The uncertainty is one level up:
- Green Lantern: SeedFinder marks it "probably" Green Lantern and traces that to Green Crack × White Rhino. Leafly says Green Lantern's lineage is undocumented and lists Green Crack × White Rhino only as a rumor; one unverified Leafly reviewer claims the Ridgeline cut is actually an OG cross.
- Ridgeline Runtz: SeedFinder traces it to The Original Z (Zkittlez) × Gelato — the same parents usually given for Runtz. Whether Ridgeline's cut is identical to the Runtz brand's is not documented.
- "Undisclosed": a few strain-guide sites claim Lantz's parents were never made public. That's out of date — the breeder has named them in interviews.
Lantz Terpene Profile
No lab terpene percentages for Lantz have been published. The Cookies strain page lists caryophyllene, humulene and limonene as the major terpenes — the same top three Leafly lists for the Green Lantern parent — and GrowDiaries also names caryophyllene as dominant. Myrcene is a reasonable guess for the relaxed back half, but treat it as likely, not tested.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Caryophyllene — pepper, fuel, the spicy backbone
Humulene — woody, earthy, forest pine
Limonene — sweet candy-citrus lift
Myrcene — relaxed body (likely, untested)
Typical relative profile for Lantz — caryophyllene-led per Cookies and GrowDiaries. No published lab percentages; batches will vary.
- Caryophyllene: Peppery and fuel-edged — the spice and gas under the candy, and the only common terpene known to act directly on CB2 receptors.
- Humulene: Woody and earthy; it's the "forest pine" and herbal note Leafly and Cookies describe.
- Limonene: The bright, sweet-citrus top note and part of the uplifting first half of the high.
- Myrcene: Earthy and musky; likely behind the body relaxation that builds as the session goes on.
The grape and candy aren't one terpene — they come from the Runtz side's overall chemistry, the same way Zkittlez and Gelato crosses smell like sweets.
Appearance
A well-grown Lantz is a bag-appeal strain. Fat Nugs Magazine's Certified Ganjier review describes buds that are predominantly dark purple-brown with flecks of dark green, rusty orange pistils and a coat of icy, glistening trichomes that feel slightly sticky and sandy. Cookies calls them dense, trichome-covered purple buds. Lighter phenotypes show more lime-to-forest green, with purple in the sugar leaves.
Aroma and Flavor
Here's where the sources split — and it's worth knowing before you buy:
- Candy and grape: Fat Nugs gets grape candy and pine when lit, shifting to grape taffy, with a slight spearmint exhale and a clean, sweet finish. On the jar, the reviewer describes creamy lime custard — "a crustless Key Lime Pie" — over grape, pine, earth and strong fuel.
- Tangy candy and pine: Leafly's description reads tangy, sweet candy and forest pine; Cookies says sweet candy kush, then a creamy, earthy middle.
- Fruit, gas and cheese: Leafly's community flavor tags are tree fruit, diesel and blue cheese; AllBud lists sour citrus and candy on the palate with a savory, spicy, herbal-cheese nose and a hint of diesel.
Put together: sweet candy-fruit up front, fuel and pine underneath, and a savory, creamy edge. Gellman's own summary is simpler — it "tastes exceptionally wild." One Leafly reviewer compares the exhale to Ice Cream Cake, which fits the breeder's note about that strain's influence.
Recreational Effects
Lantz starts in the head and finishes in the body. On Leafly, where it holds a 4.6 rating, the most-reported effects are:
- Focused: the first wave — clear and attentive.
- Creative: good for music, art or a project in the first hour.
- Uplifted: a mood lift that reviewers call heady.
- Relaxed: the second half, building with dose.
- Sleepy: listed by AllBud, Weedmaps and GrowDiaries — AllBud describes a fast uplifting rush followed by deep, often strongly sedative relaxation.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First 5–10 minutes: a heady, energetic lift — Fat Nugs' reviewer reports an initial energy boost and better focus.
- 15–60 minutes: the peak — uplifted and creative, with the body loosening up. One Leafly reviewer calls it a "creeper," so the full weight may arrive later than you expect.
- 1–2 hours: a settle into relaxation. At higher doses it can turn couch-locking or sleepy; at light doses Fat Nugs found it faded faster than expected.
That arc is why Cookies recommends it for the afternoon or early evening: enough energy for chores or a night out, with a softer landing before bed.

How Strong Is Lantz?
Lantz is a potent strain, but the published numbers are all over the map:
- Leafly: 25% THC — "higher THC than average."
- GrowDiaries: 22%, with a 17–25% range.
- AllBud: 30–31% on average.
The spread says more about growers and batches than about the strain. Ridgeline's own Emerald Cup flower was judged on appearance, smell, taste and effect, not a single THC number, and licensed brands growing Ridgeline genetics in other states will land at different potencies. Several Leafly reviewers warn it can be strong for lower tolerances. Treat Lantz as a mid-20s-and-up strain and dose accordingly.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a batch of Lantz against the 22–31% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Lantz vs Similar Strains
- vs Runtz: the candy parent line. Runtz is sweeter and more one-note; Lantz adds Green Lantern's pine, spice and focused head high.
- vs Zkittlez and Gelato: the grandparents behind the candy and cream. Lantz is gassier and more savory than either.
- vs Green Crack: a possible grandparent on the Green Lantern side and a pure daytime sativa. Lantz is far more relaxing in the back half.
- vs Ice Cream Cake: heavier, creamier and more sedating. Gellman credits it with about 10% of Lantz's traits — you can taste it on the exhale.
- vs Grape Gas: Ridgeline crossed the two to make Blueberry Caviar, which won first place at the 2025 California State Fair Cannabis Awards. Grape Gas brings more grape and fuel; Lantz brings the candy.
- vs Strawberry Guava and Kush Mints: the parents of Straw Gua Mintz, our closest in-stock match. It shares Lantz's candy-fruit sweetness, cool minty exhale and uplifting start. It leans more tropical than grape, so for the grape-jam side, Blueberry Pancakes is the closer nose.
Who Lantz Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: experienced smokers who want a flavorful afternoon or early-evening strain; fans of candy, grape and fuel; anyone who likes a focused start and a relaxed finish.
Poor fit: beginners, people prone to THC jitters, or anyone who needs to stay sharp for hours — the body side builds, and heavier doses can couch-lock. For a lighter fruit-forward option, Strawberry 2.1 is the gentler pick on our shelf.
How to Use Lantz THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the candy and grape. Around 350–380°F keeps the sweet top notes and the focused head; 390–410°F pulls out the fuel, spice and heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–30 minutes — reviewers call it a creeper. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full head-to-body arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Anxiety: the most-cited reason on Leafly, at about 33% — though dose matters, and some reviewers report jumpiness at higher amounts.
- Low mood: about 25% of Leafly reviewers, consistent with the uplifted first half.
- Trouble sleeping: about 18%; the relaxed, sometimes sleepy back half is why some save it for night.
- Stress and aches: Cookies lists stress, and AllBud and GrowDiaries users mention pain relief.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints.
- Headache and dizziness — Leafly's top reported negatives, usually from overdoing it.
- Paranoia or jumpiness — occasionally reported, mostly at high doses or low tolerance.
- Couch-lock — the body side can take over if you keep going.
Is Lantz good for sleep? At higher doses it can be — the second half is relaxing and some users report sleepiness — but the start is heady, so give it time. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Lantz Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Know the source. True Ridgeline Lantz comes from Ridgeline Farms or its licensed partners (Cookies, Heavy Hitters and others). "Lantz" on a generic menu may be a different cut — or Platinum Lantz, which is a separate strain.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Candy and fuel together. A real Lantz smells sweet and gassy at once; flat hay or pure earth means a weak cut or a bad cure.
- Color and frost: deep purple-brown or forest green with orange pistils and a heavy, sandy trichome coat.
- A clean trim and proper cure — sticky, not wet; springy, not crumbly.
Growing Lantz
Lantz was bred and selected under mixed light in Humboldt, and Ridgeline hasn't published a full grow sheet. What's known:
- Environment: Ridgeline grows it in mixed-light greenhouses and light-deprivation houses, two harvests a year — it won its Emerald Cup in the Mixed Light category.
- Flowering: not published by the breeder or the major strain databases — watch the trichomes rather than the calendar.
- Yield: GrowDiaries estimates about 400 g/m² indoors and about 550 g per plant outdoors — a general estimate, not breeder data.
- Late flower: the buds are dense, so keep airflow up and humidity low in the final weeks to protect them from mold.
- Seeds and clones: Lantz has circulated mostly as Ridgeline-grown flower and partner products. Ridgeline began making feminized pollen and seeds in 2025, per Cannabis Business Times; check that any "Lantz seeds" you see trace back to the farm.

Who bred the Lantz strain?
Jason Gellman and his father at Ridgeline Farms in Southern Humboldt, California. Gellman says it was a four-year breeding project.
Is Ridgeline Lantz the same as Lantz?
Yes. Ridgeline Lantz is the full name; it's usually shortened to Lantz on menus. Platinum Lantz is a separately listed strain.
