White Rhino Strain

White Rhino Strain: The Old-School Amsterdam Heavyweight

The White Rhino strain is a 1990s Amsterdam indica from Green House Seeds, bred by crossing White Widow with Afghan indica genetics. It grows short and bushy, packs on dense, frosty buds, smells of earth, wood and hash, and delivers a calm, heavy body high that Leafly's reviewers mostly save for night. It's the kind of classic that sits next to Afghan Kush and Northern Lights in the old-school indica hall of fame — and in the heavy-evening corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also a strain with a fuzzy family tree. The breeder's side lists White Widow × Afghan, while Leafly and AllBud name the second parent only as a "North American Indica." Below: the lineage and where the confusion comes from, its real Cannabis Cup record, the terpene profile, how the high unfolds, how strong it is, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a good bag.

White Rhino Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Indica-dominant hybrid. AllBud and DNA Genetics list about 80% indica / 20% sativa. Leafly labels it an indica in its header but calls it a hybrid in its description.
  • Ancestry: White Widow × an Afghan indica, per SeedFinder, Weedmaps and Hometown Hero. Leafly and AllBud write the second parent as "North American Indica."
  • Breeder: Green House Seeds of Amsterdam, as part of its "White Family" of White Widow crosses (Weedmaps, SeedFinder, Hometown Hero).
  • THC: AllBud, DNA Genetics and Vivosun list 18–22%; Leafly 21%; Weedmaps 17–24%, noting Green House reported 20.19%.
  • CBD: Usually under 1%. Leafly lists about 1% CBG; AllBud lists about 1% CBN.
  • Aliases: Leafly lists "Wr."

The parents: White Widow and an Afghan indica

White Widow is the 1990s Dutch hybrid famous for its snow-white coat of trichomes. It gives White Rhino its resin, its frost and a touch of head-high euphoria. The other side is a heavy indica — Afghan by most accounts — which brings the short, stout structure, the dense buds, the hashy earth and the sedation. Leafly adds that White Rhino is "said to descend from cultivars sourced from Afghanistan, Brazil, and India," which matches the breeder genetics SeedFinder lists: Afghan, Brazilian and South Indian.

North American indica or Afghani? The lineage question

  • White Widow × Afghan: the breeder-side version, listed by SeedFinder and repeated by Weedmaps, Vivosun and Hometown Hero.
  • White Widow × "North American Indica": the version on Leafly and AllBud. DNA Genetics' blog splits the difference, calling it a North American indica "said to be native or Afghani-derived."
  • White Widow × "Unknown North American Strain": how Theory Wellness labels its White Rhino.

These may all describe the same plant — an Afghan-derived indica that had been kept in North America before it was used in Amsterdam — but no breeder source we found settles it. What every source agrees on is White Widow on one side and a heavy indica on the other.

White Rhino's Cannabis Cup record

White Rhino is often called "award-winning," and it is — but not with a first place. SeedFinder's breeder listing credits it with 2nd place in the Greenhouse/Bio category at the 1996 High Times Cannabis Cup, 2nd place in a hydro category at the 2005 Spannabis Champions Cup, and 2nd place in an organic greenhouse category at the 2007 Spannabis Champions Cup. Weedmaps lists the 1996 and 2005 results. It also became a parent in its own right — Leafly lists Romulan and Green Lantern among its offspring.

White Rhino Terpene Profile

Leafly's lab-tested data lists myrcene as White Rhino's most abundant terpene, followed by pinene and terpinolene. Other guides put caryophyllene second — DNA Genetics lists myrcene, caryophyllene, pinene and limonene, and Hometown Hero lists myrcene, caryophyllene and humulene. Everyone agrees on the lead: myrcene, the earthy, musky terpene most associated with heavy indicas.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Myrcene — earthy, musky, the sedative base

Caryophyllene — black pepper, spice, hash

Pinene — pine, a little clarity

Terpinolene — faint fruity, herbal top note

Typical relative profile for White Rhino — myrcene-led per Leafly; Leafly lists pinene and terpinolene next, other guides caryophyllene. Batches vary.

  • Myrcene: Earthy, musky and herbal — the Afghan-indica backbone and the main reason White Rhino reads heavy and sleepy.
  • Caryophyllene: The black-pepper and hashy spice. It's the only common terpene known to bind directly to CB2 receptors, per a 2008 PNAS study.
  • Pinene: Fresh pine, and part of the woody, forest-floor smell.
  • Terpinolene and humulene: Minor terpenes that add a faint fruity-herbal edge and dry, woody spice.

White Rhino isn't a candy or dessert strain. DNA Genetics calls its profile "kushy" rather than fruity — earth, hash and spice first, with only a soft sweetness underneath.

Appearance

White Rhino earns the "white." AllBud describes "small rounded, super dense minty green nugs" with thin orange hairs and a coating of frosty white trichomes; DNA Genetics describes dense, rounded colas so heavily frosted they look sugar-coated, and says the name comes from that chunky shape and white look. Weedmaps calls the flowers "dense and chunky." One Leafly reviewer says the buds are so dense they're "kinda hard to break up" — use a grinder.

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar and you get earth and wood first, then hash, pine and a peppery spice. Leafly's top flavor tags are woody, earthy and pungent; Weedmaps' reviewers lean earthy (38%), sweet (33%) and woody (29%). AllBud lists hash, peppery, spicy and sweet, with reviewers adding dank, gas and tobacco. On the exhale, DNA Genetics notes pine, black pepper and herbs with a creamy or oaky finish. Some cuts surprise people — one Leafly reviewer described a taste of "white grapes and almost a pickle vinegary" sourness. If yours smells like hay or grass, it was cured badly, not bred that way.

Recreational Effects

White Rhino is a body strain with a gentle start. On Leafly, from 1,265 ratings averaging 4.1 out of 5, the top-reported effects are:

  • Sleepy: the headline effect — reviewers call it a nighttime-only strain.
  • Relaxed: deep muscle calm that builds toward couch-lock with more hits.
  • Tingly: a warm body buzz in the first half hour.
  • Euphoric and happy: a short mood lift up front, per AllBud and Weedmaps reviewers.
  • Hungry: Hometown Hero and AllBud's reviewers both flag the munchies.

Dose changes the character more than with most indicas. Theory Wellness describes "an uplifting buzz" in small amounts, with "the more sedative effects" arriving at larger doses.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a quick wave of calm and mild euphoria.
  • 30–60 minutes: the peak — heavy limbs, a quieter mind, and the sleepy pull.
  • 2–4 hours: a slow fade, per Vivosun — often straight into sleep at higher doses.

How Strong Is White Rhino?

White Rhino is strong for a classic indica, and modern batches test a lot higher than the breeder's original numbers. What the sources list:

  • SeedFinder (breeder data): 11% THC, 1.6% CBD and 0.5% CBN — an old listing from the 1990s/2000s era.
  • AllBud, DNA Genetics and Vivosun: 18–22%.
  • Leafly: 21%, "higher THC than average."
  • Weedmaps: 17–24%, with Green House reporting 20.19%; DNA Genetics says some batches reach about 25%.

So how strong is a White Rhino? Expect a solid low-20s THC strain that feels heavier than its number, because the myrcene-led profile pushes it toward sedation. Leafly says its high THC makes it "a popular choice among consumers looking for heavy-handed relaxation." It isn't one of today's 30%+ headline strains — potency varies more by grower and batch than by name — but rookies should still go slow.

What gets you high the longest? Edibles, not flower — they last several hours longer than smoking. Smoked or vaped, White Rhino's 2–4 hour arc is on the longer side for flower.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a White Rhino batch against the 18–24% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

White Rhino vs Similar Strains

  • vs White Widow: the frosty parent. White Widow is more balanced and heady; White Rhino is denser, earthier and much sleepier.
  • vs Afghan Kush and Hindu Kush: the landrace-style indica side of the family. Same hashy, earthy core; White Rhino adds White Widow's resin and a little more head.
  • vs Northern Lights: another 1990s Dutch-era indica. Northern Lights is sweeter and softer; White Rhino is spicier and more hashy.
  • vs Black Ice: also a White Widow × heavy-indica cross (Black Domina). Black Ice reads cooler and more peppery; both are knockout night strains.
  • vs Master Kush and Bubba Kush: fellow earthy, sedating classics. Bubba is sweeter and more coffee-and-chocolate; White Rhino is woodier.
  • vs Permanent Marker: a modern indica-leaning hybrid with the same heavy evening body — but a very different nose: loud, sweet, chemical "marker" candy instead of White Rhino's earth and hash. It's the closest match on our shelf for the effect, not the flavor.

Who White Rhino Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: evening and bedtime use; fans of old-school, hashy, earthy indicas; people who want their body to switch off after a long day.

Poor fit: daytime, work or anything that needs focus; people who want a fruity or dessert flavor; and beginners at anything more than a small dose. If you want something lighter and more social, Super Boof is the more balanced option on our shelf.

How to Use White Rhino THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the pine and pepper before the hashy earth takes over. Around 350–370°F keeps the flavor and a lighter body; 390–410°F brings out the full sedative weight.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15 minutes — White Rhino lands heavier than its THC number suggests. Regular users usually find two or three hits is plenty, ideally an hour or so before bed. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Stress: about 37% of Leafly reviewers — the top-cited reason.
  • Pain: about 31%. The breeder describes White Rhino as "very famous for its medicinal properties."
  • Anxiety: about 28% — though a minority of reviewers report the opposite, so dose matters.
  • Insomnia: listed by AllBud and Vivosun, and the most common theme in written reviews.
  • Low appetite: AllBud reviewers list appetite loss, and "hungry" is a common effect.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly.
  • Headache — Leafly's second most-reported negative.
  • Heavy sedation and couch-lock — ideal at bedtime, a problem if you have plans.
  • Anxiety or low mood — uncommon, but some reviewers report feeling anxious or "in my head" after repeated use.
  • Dizziness or paranoia — possible at high doses or low tolerance, per DNA Genetics and Vivosun.

Is White Rhino good for sleep? That's its main job. Don't drive after using it, don't mix it with alcohol or sleep medication, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is White Rhino Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask about the source. A seller who knows it's a Green House Seeds cut — or can name the grower — is a good sign.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Earth, wood and hash. A real White Rhino is pungent and spicy, not candy-sweet.
  • Dense, rounded, frosty buds with trichomes all the way through when you break one open.
  • A proper cure — AllBud's growers mention a "grassy, hay-like" smell on rushed batches. That's a red flag.

Growing White Rhino

White Rhino built its reputation as much on yield as on potency. DNA Genetics rates it moderately easy and forgiving, resistant to mold and temperature swings; one AllBud grower disagrees and says it's not for beginners.

  • Flowering: about 63 days (9 weeks). The breeder says "9 weeks will guarantee rock-hard tops and extra sweet taste"; some phenotypes run to 10.
  • Yield: the breeder claims up to 900 g/m² indoors and up to 1,200 g per plant outdoors; DNA Genetics and Vivosun quote a more typical 400–500 g/m² indoors.
  • Height: short and bushy — about 3–4 ft indoors, 5–6 ft outdoors per DNA Genetics. Leafly notes it stretches during the first 3 weeks of flower.
  • Method: good for sea of green (SOG) and screen of green (SCROG). Leafly cites Reservoir Seeds' soil pH of 5.8–6.0 and warm, slightly dry conditions.
  • Outdoors: harvest in early to mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is White Rhino indica or sativa?

White Rhino is an indica-dominant hybrid — about 80% indica per AllBud and DNA Genetics. Leafly labels it an indica. Its effects are clearly indica: sleepy, relaxed and heavy-bodied.

How strong is a White Rhino?

Most sources list 18–22% THC, Leafly 21%, and some batches reach about 24–25%. It feels heavier than that number suggests because of its myrcene-led, sedating profile, so start small.

What is White Rhino a cross of?

White Widow crossed with an Afghan indica, per SeedFinder and Weedmaps. Leafly and AllBud describe the second parent as a 'North American Indica,' and Leafly says its ancestry traces to Afghanistan, Brazil and India.

Who bred White Rhino?

Green House Seeds in Amsterdam, in the 1990s, as part of its White Family of White Widow crosses.

Did White Rhino win the Cannabis Cup?

It placed, but didn't win outright. SeedFinder's breeder listing credits it with 2nd place in a Greenhouse/Bio category at the 1996 High Times Cannabis Cup, plus 2nd places at the 2005 and 2007 Spannabis Champions Cups.

What does White Rhino taste like?

Earthy, woody and pungent per Leafly, with hash, pine, black pepper and a soft sweetness. Some cuts have an unusual sour, grape-like note.

Leafly's top-reported effects are sleepy, relaxed and tingly, with a short euphoric, happy lift up front. Small doses can feel uplifting; larger doses turn sedating.

Is White Rhino good for sleep?

That's its most common use. Reviewers describe it as a nighttime-only strain, and AllBud and Vivosun list insomnia among its reported uses.

Is White Rhino good for pain or anxiety?

About 31% of Leafly reviewers report using it for pain and 28% for anxiety, with stress the top reason at 37%. These are consumer reports, not medical outcomes — and a few reviewers say it made them anxious, so keep the dose low.

How long does a White Rhino high last?

Smoked or vaped, about 2–4 hours per Vivosun, peaking 30–60 minutes in. What gets you high the longest? Edibles — they last much longer than any flower.

Is White Rhino good for beginners?

Use caution. It's heavy and sedating, so beginners should take one small puff, wait 15 minutes, and use it only when they have nowhere to be.

How long does White Rhino take to flower?

About 63 days (9 weeks) indoors, with some phenotypes running to 10 weeks. Outdoors, harvest lands in early to mid-October.
