Lemon Kush Strain: Citrus on Top, Kush Underneath
The Lemon Kush strain is a citrus-forward hybrid that does exactly what the name says: bright lemon and lime on the nose, with an earthy, slightly spicy Master Kush-style base underneath. Consumers describe the high as happy, giggly and uplifted, with a calm body that keeps it from getting racy. Leafly lists it at 19% THC and calls it "Cali Lemon Kush"; other databases put well-grown cuts in the mid-20s. It sits in the citrus corner of our THCA flower collection.
It's also one of the messier names in cannabis. "Lemon Kush" is used by at least three unrelated breeding projects — a Master Kush × Lemon Joy cross, Alien Genetics' Lemon G × Afghani Kush, and a Chemdawg-based seed line — which is why one jar can be zingy and uplifting and the next heavy and sleepy. Below: which family tree is which, what the numbers say, how the high unfolds, how to use it, how to grow it, and how to judge a bag.

- Type: Hybrid. AllBud calls it an even 50/50; SeedFinder lists the United Cannabis Seeds and Alien Genetics versions as "mostly indica"; Zambeza sells an indica-dominant seed line. The effects most people report — happy, uplifted, creative — sit in the middle.
- Most-cited ancestry: Master Kush × Lemon Joy. This is the "general consensus" in Leafly's description and the lineage used by Theory Wellness, a licensed grower in Massachusetts and Maine.
- The Alien Genetics version: Lemon G × a landrace Afghani Kush male. AllBud and Weedmaps list these as the parents.
- The Zambeza version: Chemdawg × Lemon Thai × Pakistani Kush — a seed-bank line that shares the name, not the genetics.
- THC: Leafly 19%; Weedmaps about 20%; SeedFinder 17–26% for the United Cannabis Seeds cut; Zambeza 18%. AllBud's header says 17% while its description says 26%.
- CBD and minors: Negligible CBD (0–2% at most). Leafly lists about 1% CBG; AllBud lists about 1% CBN.
- Aliases: Cali Lemon Kush, LK.
- Offspring: Leafly lists Cherry Poppers and Lemon Jack as Lemon Kush descendants.
Three strains, one name
There's no documented originating breeder for the "classic" Lemon Kush, and the sources don't agree on what it is. Even Leafly contradicts itself: its description gives the Master Kush × Lemon Joy consensus, while its genetics module shows Master Kush and Afghani as the parents. Weedmaps puts it plainly — the cultivar's genetic origins are unknown, and Master Kush × Lemon Joy is simply what breeders most often cite.
The one version with a clear, first-hand origin is Alien Genetics'. According to the breeder's notes on SeedFinder, he pollinated a Lemon G clone with a landrace Afghani Kush male and kept the result as a proprietary strain "never let out of the mothership in pure form" — it was never sold as feminized seeds. So most Lemon Kush you'll find on a shelf is the Master Kush × Lemon Joy type or a seed-bank version, not the Alien cut.
In practice, the name tells you more about the flavor than the family tree: expect lemon on top and kush underneath. How heavy it lands depends on which version you have — the Master Kush and Afghani sides pull it toward body relaxation; the Lemon G and Lemon Joy sides keep it bright.
Lemon Kush Terpene Profile
The sources split on the lead terpene. Leafly's lab-certified terpene data lists myrcene first, then pinene and caryophyllene. AllBud and Weedmaps instead credit the lemon flavor to high limonene. Both can be true — different Lemon Kush versions, and different batches of the same version, chart differently. Limonene is the terpene most associated with citrus peel; a 2018 review, "Limonene: Aroma of innovation in health and disease", surveys its biological activity, though that research isn't specific to cannabis.
Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity
Myrcene — earthy, herbal, relaxed body
Limonene — lemon zest, mood lift
Pinene — pine, clear head
Caryophyllene — pepper, spicy kush finish
Typical relative profile for Lemon Kush — myrcene-led per Leafly's lab data; brighter, lemon-heavy cuts often test limonene-forward instead.
- Myrcene: Earthy and herbal — the kush base, and the reason heavier Lemon Kush cuts relax the body.
- Limonene: The lemon-peel brightness on the nose and a driver of the happy, uplifted onset.
- Pinene: A pine edge that keeps the high clearer than most Kushes.
- Caryophyllene: The peppery, spicy finish on the exhale, inherited from the Kush side.
The balance between myrcene and limonene is the best clue to how a jar will feel: limonene-forward reads zippy and social; myrcene-forward reads mellow and couch-friendly.
Appearance
Leafly describes Lemon Kush as "light green buds covered in a white frosting of trichomes," and AllBud says the same. Expect light lime-to-olive green nugs with orange pistils and a good coat of frost. Compared with stocky indica Kushes, the buds are often a touch looser and more open, a sign of the lemon side in the mix. Afghani-heavy cuts run denser and darker.
Aroma and Flavor
Open a jar of Lemon Kush and the first hit is lemon — zest and peel more than lemonade. Behind it sits an earthy, herbal kush base, sometimes with pine or a faint fuel note; growers of the Zambeza seed line describe it as "stinky, lemony, gassy." On Weedmaps, users report lemon (42%), citrus (31%) and earthy (28%) as the top flavors; Leafly's users add lime. AllBud's list adds spicy and sweet, with reviewers mentioning pepper, wood and tea.
The inhale is bright lemon and lime; the exhale turns earthy, spicy and hashy. Low-temperature vaping keeps more of the citrus; combustion brings the kush forward.
Recreational Effects
On Leafly, with more than 1,200 ratings, Lemon Kush's top effects are:
- Happy: the headline effect — an easy mood lift rather than a rush.
- Giggly: social and talkative, a good group-session strain.
- Uplifted: Leafly calls the effects "mostly energizing."
- Creative and euphoric: AllBud's listed effects, alongside relaxing.
- Relaxed: a calm body underneath that grows with dose.
Not every version agrees. The handful of SeedFinder reviews of Female Seeds' Lemon Kush describe it as calming, sleepy and relaxing, and Zambeza's line is sold as indica-dominant. That's the "three strains, one name" problem showing up in the effects.
How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration
- First few minutes: a light, happy head change; Theory Wellness notes the onset can feel slightly delayed, so don't stack hits.
- 20–45 minutes: the peak — upbeat, chatty and clear-headed, with the body loosening up.
- 1–3 hours: a gentle settle. At higher doses, or on Afghani-heavy cuts, the kush side takes over and it turns couch-friendly.
AllBud calls it "quite strong" and suggests saving it for the evening; most Leafly reviewers use it in the afternoon. Start in the middle — late afternoon — until you know your jar.

How Strong Is Lemon Kush?
Lemon Kush is a mid-to-high potency strain — strong enough for regular users, not a record-chaser. The numbers vary with the version and the grower:
- Leafly: 19% THC, about 1% CBG — which Leafly notes is above average.
- Weedmaps: about 20%.
- SeedFinder (United Cannabis Seeds): 17–26% THC, 0–2% CBD.
- Zambeza (breeder claim): 18%.
- AllBud: 17% in its header, 26% in its description.
So a realistic expectation is the high teens to low 20s, with standout batches in the mid-20s. Where it lands on the strength scale also depends on the terpene balance — a myrcene-heavy jar can feel heavier than its THC number suggests.
THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Lemon Kush batch against the 17–26% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.
Lemon Kush vs Similar Strains
- vs Master Kush: the earthy, hashy parent in the most-cited lineage. Lemon Kush keeps the calm body but adds a bright citrus top end and a lighter head.
- vs Afghan Kush and Hindu Kush: the landrace roots behind Master Kush and the Alien Genetics version. Both are heavier, sleepier and more hash-forward.
- vs Lemon OG: a different lemon line (Lemon Skunk × The OG #18), usually gassier and heavier on the body. Lemon Kush is brighter and more upbeat.
- vs Lemon Haze and Super Lemon Haze: sativa lemons — sharper, more energetic and more likely to spark anxiety. Lemon Kush is the calmer, more balanced lemon.
- vs Lemon Skunk: similar zest with a skunkier, sweeter base and a more upbeat lean.
- vs Lemon Cherry Gelato: not related — LCG comes from the Sunset Sherbet × GSC dessert family — but it shares the lemon on top, adds cherry and cream, and lands relaxed and happy. It's the closest lemon-forward flower on our shelf.
Who Lemon Kush Is (and Isn't) For
Good fit: citrus lovers who find Hazes too jittery; afternoon and early-evening sessions; social smoking; anyone who wants a happy, calm buzz without heavy sedation.
Poor fit: people looking for a knockout sleep strain (some cuts get there, most don't), or anyone after an all-day sativa rush. For a lighter, sweeter option on our shelf, Strawberry 2.1 is gentler.
How to Use Lemon Kush THCA Flower — and How Much
THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.
- Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
- Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the lemon. Around 350–375°F keeps the citrus top notes; 390–410°F brings out the earthy kush and a heavier body.
- Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
- Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.
How much? New or occasional users: one or two small puffs, then wait 15–20 minutes — the onset can creep. Regular users usually find two or three hits gives the full happy, relaxed arc. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
Medicinal Benefits
These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud, not established clinical outcomes. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.
- Stress: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 37% of reviewers).
- Anxiety: about 30% report help — though "anxious" also shows up among its negatives, so keep doses low.
- Low mood: about 27%, consistent with the happy, uplifted headline effects.
- Appetite and headaches: listed by AllBud and its reviewers, along with occasional sleep support from heavier cuts.

Side Effects and Cautions
- Dry mouth and dry eyes — the most common complaints on Leafly and AllBud.
- Anxiety or paranoia — among Leafly's top negatives; AllBud flags paranoia with heavy use.
- Headache or dizziness — AllBud notes both with heavy use, and a few reviewers mention a lingering headache.
Is Lemon Kush good for sleep? Sometimes — the myrcene-heavy and Afghani-leaning cuts can get you there, but most jars are more happy-and-calm than sedating. Don't drive after using it, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.
Is Lemon Kush Top Shelf? How to Judge a Good Bag
- Lemon you can smell through the jar. If it just smells earthy or like hay, it's either a different cut or a poor cure.
- Ask which version. A good seller can tell you the lineage or seed source — Master Kush × Lemon Joy, Lemon G × Afghani, or a seed-bank line. The answer tells you whether to expect bright or heavy.
- A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC, plus terpenes if possible. Limonene near the top is a good sign. Ours are on the lab results page.
- Frost and structure: a white trichome coat that goes into the bud, not just the tips.
- A proper cure: slightly springy buds that break cleanly. Citrus terpenes are volatile, so over-dried flower loses the lemon first.
Growing Lemon Kush
Lemon Kush is a manageable grow, and Weedmaps calls it suitable for beginners. Because several breeders sell different genetics under the name, check the specs for the seed you actually buy.
- Flowering: about 55 days for Zambeza's line, about 64 days for United Cannabis Seeds' (SeedFinder), and 9–10 weeks indoors per Weedmaps.
- Yield: Zambeza claims 450–500 g/m² indoors and 400–550 g per plant outdoors; grower diaries on GrowDiaries average far less, about 50 g per plant.
- Height: 100–130 cm indoors and 170–230 cm outdoors (Zambeza); Weedmaps says it can reach about six feet with little effort. Top and train early.
- Climate: Weedmaps notes it thrives in warm, Mediterranean-style conditions. Keep humidity down late in flower.
- Seeds: feminized versions from United Cannabis Seeds, Female Seeds and Zambeza. The Alien Genetics original was never released as seeds.
