Sherbanger Strain

Sherbanger Strain: Sherbet Sweetness Meets Headbanger Gas

The Sherbanger strain is a hybrid of Sunset Sherbet and Headbanger, Karma Genetics' Sour Diesel × Biker Kush. Most sources credit it to Boston Roots Seed Co in Massachusetts, and one phenotype, Sherbanger #22, became one of the most-copied cuts of the last few years. Leafly sums it up as "fuel-drenched Sherbert". Growers describe it as blueberry muffin mixed with raw fuel. The high opens happy and talkative, then lands heavy in the body. It belongs in the sweet-and-gassy corner of our THCA flower collection.

It's also a strain where the databases don't agree. Breeder credit, indica-or-sativa lean, the dominant terpene and THC all vary from source to source. Below we cover what each source says, how the #22 cut got its number, what the potency numbers mean, how the high plays out, how to use it, how to grow it and how to judge a bag.

A 360° look at Sherbanger's dense, purple-marbled, frost-heavy buds.

Sherbanger Strain Genetics & Lineage

  • Type: Hybrid. AllBud lists it as an even 50/50, and Leafly simply calls it a hybrid. Retailers selling the #22 cut usually label it indica or indica-leaning because the finish is heavy.
  • Ancestry: Sunset Sherbet (Girl Scout Cookies × Pink Panties) × Headbanger (Sour Diesel × Biker Kush), per SeedFinder and Leafly.
  • Breeder: Usually credited to Boston Roots Seed Co. Weedmaps notes it is "sometimes attributed to Bloom Seed Co," and SeedFinder lists the breeder as "Unknown or Legendary" and describes the strain as a cooperation between the two. Leafly names only Karma Genetics, which bred the Headbanger parent.
  • THC: Leafly 22% with about 1% CBG. AllBud 20–22%. Retailers report 21–24% for the #22.
  • CBD: Trace amounts only.
  • Aliases: Sherbanger #22, Sherbanger 22, Sherbanger OG, and sometimes just "22".

The Headbanger side

Headbanger is the gas. Leafly lists it as a Karma Genetics sativa-dominant cross of Sour Diesel and Biker Kush, around 22% THC, and calls it "the winner of the 2013 Amsterdam Cannabis Cup." It contributes the sour diesel, chemical and skunk notes, the dense conical OG-style structure, and a head-focused lift. Sunset Sherbet brings creamy berry-and-citrus sweetness, purple color and heavier body effects from the cookie family.

Why it's called #22

According to Rugged Roots Trading Post's write-up, Boston Roots made the seeds in Massachusetts around 2019 and sent them to California. There, NorCal's Garden ran the pack and kept plant #22 as the standout. The number is a phenotype number, the 22nd plant in that hunt, and it stuck to the name once clones spread. Proper Cannabis sells it as the "NorCalGenetics cut." So "Sherbanger" is the cross, and "Sherbanger #22" is one clone-only expression of it. Seeds of the same cross can come out sweeter or gassier.

The Sherbanger family

Sherbanger turned into a parent strain fast. SeedFinder lists about 30 direct descendants, including Bangerang, Fritter Banger, Candy Fumez, EDOG and Black Maple, which is Bloom Seed Co's Dulce de Uva × Sherbanger. Boston Roots followed with 33 Sherbanger (a Gelato 33 cross) and Sherbanger F2. The success of the sweet-plus-gas formula led to a wave of "banger"-named crosses from other breeders.

Sherbanger Terpene Profile

The sources disagree on which terpene leads. Leafly's lab-sourced data lists limonene first, then pinene and caryophyllene. Proper Cannabis, Rugged Roots and Weedmaps all put caryophyllene first, followed by limonene, humulene or linalool. The most likely explanation is phenotype: sweeter, Sherb-leaning cuts test more limonene-forward, while gassier, Banger-leaning cuts test peppery. Caryophyllene is worth knowing about. A 2008 PNAS study identified beta-caryophyllene as a "dietary cannabinoid" that binds CB2 receptors.

Terpene Profile — Relative Intensity

Caryophyllene — pepper, fuel, the Headbanger backbone

Limonene — creamy citrus, the sherbet lift

Humulene — earthy, hoppy grounding

Pinene — pine, a clearer head

Typical relative profile for Sherbanger #22. Leafly's lab data puts limonene first; Sherb-leaning cuts usually run sweeter and more citrus-forward.

  • Caryophyllene: The black pepper and fuel on the exhale, mostly from the Sour Diesel and Biker Kush side. It's the one common terpene that acts directly on CB2 receptors.
  • Limonene: The creamy orange and citrus from Sunset Sherbet, and much of the upbeat, chatty start.
  • Humulene: Earthy and woody like hops, and part of why the berry doesn't taste like candy.
  • Pinene: Fresh pine, and number two on Leafly's list. It helps the first hour feel clear instead of foggy.

The blueberry note doesn't come from a single terpene. It comes from how these compounds combine with Sunset Sherbet's fruit esters, and it's strongest in the Sherb-leaning phenotypes.

Appearance

Sherbanger buds are dense and good-looking. AllBud describes "oversized conical dark olive green nugs with deep purple undertones, yellow-orange hairs and sticky bright white crystal trichomes." Rugged Roots describes the #22 as "dense, stocky" and deep green with purple running through it, with resin that comes in "early and heavy." The hard, dense structure comes from Headbanger's Kush side, and the purple comes from the Sherbet side. One home grower's journal called the finished buds "rock hard dense."

Aroma and Flavor

Open a jar of good Sherbanger and the first thing you notice is sweet fruit and cream: blueberry, orange sherbet and something like baked dough. Behind it is sour, sharp fuel. Proper Cannabis describes "sweet, fresh blueberries with gassy, sour OG fumes." AllBud describes a "fruity gelato overtone accented by spicy diesel and a punch of sour citrusy herbs." The inhale is smooth and berry-sweet. The exhale gets gassy and peppery and leaves an earthy aftertaste. Leafly's reviewers tag it apricot, diesel and flowery, and some describe a sour, "very diesely and loud" note. Sherb-leaning cuts lean toward candy and cream. Banger-leaning cuts lean toward sour fuel and skunk.

Recreational Effects

Sherbanger usually works in two stages: an upbeat start, then a heavy finish. Leafly describes "hybrid effects that pair well with afternoon and evening activities." The most-reported effects there are:

  • Relaxed: the effect reviewers mention most, building from the shoulders down.
  • Talkative: a chatty, social first hour.
  • Happy: a solid mood lift. Proper Cannabis calls it "giggly euphoria."
  • Creative and uplifted: AllBud also lists creative, tingly, sociable and uplifting.

How the high unfolds: onset, peak and duration

  • First 5–10 minutes: a quick head change with a warm, giggly mood.
  • 20–60 minutes: the peak. You're talkative and creative, and the body starts to feel heavy.
  • 1–3 hours: the body takes over. At higher doses, especially with the #22, it turns couch-heavy and sleepy.

One Leafly reviewer warned "you only need a few hits for this thing to catch up with you." Wait between hits.

How Strong Is Sherbanger? Is It a Good Strain?

Sherbanger is above average in strength, but it isn't record-setting on paper. Reported numbers:

  • Leafly: 22% THC, about 1% CBG.
  • AllBud: 20–22%.
  • Rugged Roots (the #22): 21–24%. Seed-grown Sherbanger is around 20–22%.
  • JointCommerce: public COAs mostly 22–28%, with outliers from 18% to 30%.
  • New York retail: one Runtz-branded batch was advertised at "over 30%."

Is it a good strain? Its reputation is mostly about flavor and quality. Leafly reviewers give it 4.4 stars across 66 ratings, and breeders keep using it as a parent because it adds density, frost and loud terps to whatever it's crossed with. If you like both dessert strains and gas, Sherbanger gives you both.

THCA flower is labeled differently from dispensary flower: the lab reports THCA, which converts to THC when heated, plus a small amount of delta-9 THC. When you compare a Sherbanger batch against the 20–28% range above, compare total THC on the COA, not the headline number — our guide on how to read a THCA flower COA walks through the math.

Sherbanger vs Similar Strains

  • vs Sunset Sherbet: the sweet parent. Sherbet is creamier and more indica-calm. Sherbanger adds sour fuel and a stronger head start.
  • vs Sour Diesel and Headband: both gas-forward, heady diesel strains. Sherbanger has the same fuel but with fruit in front of it and a heavier landing.
  • vs Permanent Marker: also from Sherb stock ((Biscotti × Sherb Bx) × Jealousy), with the same sweet-over-gas character and euphoric-then-heavy arc. Permanent Marker is more chemical and floral. It's the closest match we have in stock.
  • vs Black Maple: Sherbanger's offspring. Grape and vanilla syrup over the same pepper and gas, and darker in the jar.
  • vs Lemon Cherry Gelato and Gelato: other Sunset Sherbet descendants with fruitier, less fuel-heavy profiles.

Who Sherbanger Is (and Isn't) For

Good fit: people who want flavor and gas in one jar, afternoon-to-evening social sessions, and experienced smokers who like a happy start and a heavy finish.

Poor fit: anyone who needs to stay sharp for hours, and newer consumers who take big hits. Leafly lists "anxious" and "headache" among its negatives. If you want the sherbet sweetness without as much gas, Lemon Cherry Gelato is the softer option on our shelf.

How to Use Sherbanger THCA Flower — and How Much

THCA has to be heated to do anything. Raw, it isn't intoxicating; heat converts it to THC (decarboxylation), which is why the method matters as much as the strain.

  • Smoking (joint, pipe, bong): the fastest onset. Take one or two small hits, then wait 10–15 minutes before deciding on more.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer: the best way to taste the blueberry before the fuel. Around 350–375°F keeps the sweet limonene side; 390–410°F brings out the pepper and the body weight.
  • Pre-rolls: the no-prep option — see our THCA pre-rolls.
  • Homemade edibles: decarb the flower first. Edibles take 30–120 minutes to kick in and last far longer, so start low and wait the full two hours.

How much? New or occasional users: one small puff, then wait 15 minutes. It catches up with you. Regular users usually find two or three hits gets the full arc, and more than that pushes it toward sleep. You can always add more; you can't take it back.

Medicinal Benefits

These are uses consumers report on Leafly and AllBud. They are not established clinical outcomes, and no controlled trials have studied Sherbanger specifically. Individual response varies with dose, tolerance and chemotype.

  • Anxiety: the most-cited reason on Leafly (about 32% of reviewers), though "anxious" is also one of its top negatives, so dose matters.
  • Stress: about 27% of Leafly reviewers.
  • Low mood: about 21%, consistent with the happy, talkative start.
  • Aches and appetite: AllBud lists chronic pain, headaches, nausea and mood swings among reported uses.

Side Effects and Cautions

  • Dry eyes and dry mouth: the usual complaints, and dry eyes is in Leafly's top three negatives.
  • Headache: Leafly's most-reported negative for this strain.
  • Anxiety: possible when the fast start meets a big dose or low tolerance.
  • Heavy sedation: at higher doses the body side can knock you out, so don't plan a busy evening.

Is Sherbanger good for sleep? At higher doses, often yes. The #22 is sold as a nighttime strain for that reason. Don't drive after using it. Talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a heart condition.

Is It Real Sherbanger? How to Judge a Good Bag

  • Ask if it's the #22. The clone-only #22 is the version the reputation is built on. Seed-grown "Sherbanger" can vary a lot.
  • A current third-party COA naming the lab, with THCA, delta-9 and total THC. Be skeptical of claims over 30% without paperwork. Ours are on the lab results page.
  • Both fruit and fuel. Real Sherbanger has blueberry or creamy citrus on top and sour gas underneath. Earthy and flat means old or mislabeled.
  • Density and purple. Hard, conical buds with purple marbling and heavy frost. Airy, larfy buds are a red flag for a strain known for density.
  • A proper cure: the terps should hit when you open the bag. A hay smell means it was rushed.

Growing Sherbanger

Breeders have built so many crosses on Sherbanger because it grows well. JointCommerce notes strong lateral branching, a moderate-to-heavy stretch of 1.3–1.8× after the flip, and the dense, stacking structure Bloom and Boston Roots have used to tighten up airy lines.

  • Flowering: no official breeder figure is published. One documented home grow finished in 9–10 weeks of flower. The Headbanger parent runs 10–12 weeks per Leafly, so plan on at least 9.
  • Height: medium. That grower's plant finished around 127 cm (50 in). Top early to manage the stretch.
  • Climate: the dense colas need low humidity late in flower, so dehumidify in weeks 6–9 to avoid bud rot.
  • Seeds and clones: the #22 is clone-only. SeedFinder notes the original was never released as feminized seed. F2s and other breeders' versions exist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sherbanger a sativa or indica strain?

Sherbanger is a hybrid. AllBud lists it as 50% indica / 50% sativa, and Leafly calls it a hybrid. The popular #22 cut is usually sold as indica-leaning because the body effect gets heavy, especially at higher doses.

Is Sherbanger a good strain?

For flavor, yes. It has blueberry and creamy citrus over sour fuel, dense frosty buds, and a 4.4-star average across 66 Leafly ratings. It's also used heavily in breeding. Whether it's right for you depends on whether you want a heavy evening finish.

What is Sherbanger a cross of?

Sunset Sherbet × Headbanger. Sunset Sherbet is Girl Scout Cookies × Pink Panties. Headbanger is Karma Genetics' Sour Diesel × Biker Kush.

Who bred Sherbanger?

It's usually credited to Boston Roots Seed Co in Massachusetts. Weedmaps notes it is sometimes attributed to Bloom Seed Co, and SeedFinder describes it as a cooperation between the two. The #22 phenotype was selected by NorCal's Garden in California.

What does the 22 in Sherbanger #22 mean?

It's a phenotype number. Plant #22 was the standout from a seed hunt of Boston Roots' Sherbanger, kept as a clone, and that number became part of the name.

Is Sherbert indica or sativa?

Sunset Sherbet (also spelled Sherbert) is an indica-dominant hybrid of Girl Scout Cookies × Pink Panties. It's the sweeter, more relaxing parent of Sherbanger.

How strong is Sherbanger?

Leafly lists 22% THC, AllBud 20–22%, and the #22 cut commonly tests 21–24%. Some batches are advertised higher. It hits faster than those numbers suggest, so start small.

What does Sherbanger taste like?

Sweet blueberry, creamy orange sherbet and citrus on the inhale, then sour fuel, black pepper and earth on the exhale. People often describe it as blueberry muffin mixed with gas.

What are the effects of Sherbanger?

Leafly reviewers most often report relaxed, talkative and happy. It starts with a giggly, social head high and turns heavy and calm in the body after the first hour.

Is Sherbanger good for sleep?

At higher doses it can be. The body effect turns sedating, which is why the #22 is often sold as a nighttime strain. At small doses it's more social than sleepy.

What strains come from Sherbanger?

SeedFinder lists about 30 descendants, including Black Maple, Candy Fumez, Bangerang, Fritter Banger and EDOG. Boston Roots also released 33 Sherbanger and Sherbanger F2.

How long does Sherbanger take to flower?

There's no official breeder figure. One documented grow finished in 9–10 weeks of flower, and the Headbanger parent runs 10–12 weeks, so plan on roughly 9–10 weeks.

Where can I buy Sherbanger THCA flower online?

Sherbanger isn't in the Diesel Hemp shop right now. The closest match is Permanent Marker THCA Flower, also bred from Sherb stock, with the same sweet-over-gas profile and a euphoric-then-heavy high. It's ½oz for $59, third-party lab tested, with free shipping over $75.
